In August, AFC Bournemouth will be embarking on their SIXTH season in the Premier League, much to the delight of Cherries fans across the globe. It’s the richest league in football, yet Bournemouth have the smallest capacity and do not seemingly have the appetite to expand. We find out why.

It’s nice to hear the old ex players on Talksport often recalling their visits to “Dean Court” and still using it when reporting on a game in progression but I have a suspicion that John Williams & Dave Merrington would now have been stopped from incorrectly naming the Fitness First or whatever it’s supposed to be known as by the generic BBC Radio Solent - the Southampton Subdivision of “ local radio in the south “ of which the football show has authentic presenters even when the rest of its output sounds like polished cheese….

I think there should be stadium like dean court in the premier league……. Not only is it a change of scenery from all the big, new fancy stadiums, its also an amazing away game experience (I am a man city fan). Watching a game at dean court is more fun than watching a game at the new spurs ground.

Can’t agree with that, I’m Bournemouth all my life, apart from the odd game at DC the atmosphere is crap, I’d rather be with three thousand bmth fans at Spurs, it is an amazing ground, not many of our fans know what other teams say about us because they never travel, give me a great day out anytime, like you, unfortunately the majority of our fans are clueless when it comes to away days, they just don’t get it, seven thousand season ticket holders, but only sixteen hundred of them wanted to watch Wycombe at home, the majority have never been to an away game, the ST were sold to the wrong fans, as was our club. Also a large part of our away following don’t bother with home games.

Bournemouth born Hampshire lad (yep that old) who somehow chose West Ham as his team at five years old but always attended Bournemouth matches from the early seventies onwards chanting ‘Come on Boscombe’ and hammering my feet on the wooden boards of the main grandstand when we played well. Seeing George Best and Charlie George playing for us albeit briefly. Watching the 2-0 win against Man U and having get get on the pitch after the gates were opened onto the terracing five mins before the end. Having bits of terracing thrown at us at Swindon, travelling to Exeter with my old man silently in the car the day after Karen Carpenter died and then watching us lose after leading. The wonderful promotion seasons. The Cherries gave me some unforgettable memories until I moved from the South in 92. Throughout all this the crowds were never massive, it felt like there was more at the Speedway then Dean Court at times. Hopefully, if the Cherries can establish themselves as a top twelve club in the Premiership year on year this could justify the outlay of a larger stadium.

We barely averaged 17,500 during the best season under John Bond our best ever average. Only sold just over 20,000 a couple of times during the famous season where we were just not quite good enough for promotion. Prior to that, it was the FA Cup in 57 where we sold out 20,000 + 7 times. Biggest crowd since the 70's was against Middlesbrough in 1987 when we squeezed in just under 15,000.

Thanks for a great video Sam. Well thought out and well argued. Personally, I agree that an academy rates over a new stadium (much as I would love to lay my hands on a season ticket after quite a few years relying on points to get tickets). We have seen this last season what the fruits of the academy can bring - potentially there’s a good return on investment there. Let’s face it, in the tv era the size of the ground is far from the biggest determinant of revenue. BUT I don’t think this question can be ducked forever. The size of our ground does denote our “temporary” status in the PL. Only a bigger ground will spell out our ambition, the time may not be right now but it can’t be postponed forever. The size - surely we’re only talking about 20k, 25h max. Hope I get to see it. Up the Cherries!

@User789-34

That was a great insight. I totally understand thinking about new training ground before relocation, and reliance of being in premier league. But I would have thought expansion would lead to 4K extra attendance in prem, and 2k extra in championship, considering Bournemouth averaged around 10k in championship in the past, 9k last season. So as relocation is not feasible until Bournemouth are established as a premier league club for like a decade, surely, even if it’s limited benefit, expansion will benefit as it would likely take minimum 15-20 years to relocate so you would pay back 9-10m expenditure in that period with room to spare and the cash leftover can be reinvested.

We’ve seen a lot of clubs run into financial hardship rushing to expand their ground or build a new one once they get an influx of premier league cash. Good video, lots of issues there. Sounds like the club needs to be confident in it's playing abilities or it will keep saying 'dare we go for it?' season after season and not get anywhere. My club Huddersfield spent a large proportion of our Premier League money on training ground improvements. We have the stadium and the training facilities, now for the playing side to go one step further and give the PL another bash. Hey at least your stadium isn't like Lutons. I worked there in the eighties and they were 'making plans' for a new stadium then, look how that turned out!

Great video and an excellent explanation of the situation. I am a Norwich City fan living in Dorset and it seems that the 2 clubs have had very different approaches to using their Premier League earnings. As you rightly point out AFCB have spent a lot of money on transfer fees and wages to attract players who can keep you in the PL. Norwich have tried (twice) without success to survive in the Premier League with a very strict policy on transfers and with a strict salary cap of sorts (i think the only exception being Pukki who we signed on a free). Where Norwich have spent money is on their academy and training facilities which used to be a joke but are now world class. As a club without any billionaires backing us we have relied heavily on developing our own talent and selling them on i.e. Jamal Lewis, Nathan Redmond, Ben Godfrey, The Murphy Twins, James Maddison etc. I hope that if AFCB do get another prolonged spell in the PL that they invest in a bigger ground. Not least because getting tickets as an away supporter when my team are playing just down the road is a flippin' nightmare!!

Very interesting video, one good thing about having a 12k capacity stadium in the prem is that it’s really unique and stands out a lot more compared to other premier league stadiums, but I do actually know why people are complaining about how small our stadium is because new AFCB fans will find it hard to get to their first AFCB game especially if your like me who lives a 4 hour drive (and a 7/8 hour train journey) away from Bournemouth and only gets to visit the seaside town once a year due to train tickets being expensive (even with my 16-17 saver railcard) and accommodation being just as expensive as I tend to stay at a hostel in Swanage and the prices are £60-80/night and it quickly gets fully booked. However, I do know that sometimes, tickets go on general sale if customers refund their tickets but this is usually done on very short notice hence why I focus on going to away games as I find it a lot easy to get a ticket for away games and I was lucky enough to attend the Coventry away game on Easter Monday and I’m hoping to attend more games in the 22/23 season. I also want to say that the idea of a new training ground will impact our club for the better and I feel having a bigger stadium would be recommended once we become more successful than ever such as when we compete in the champions league or any other European competition, I actually remembered when I starting watching Bournemouth when I was 13 we were in the top 6 of the premier league and I wonder how things would’ve been if it stayed like that.

It is a sad affair that somewhat mirrors our plight in the north east in as much as some councils seem less than useless in trying to help their local professional team find a new home! I'm not talking cash investments here but, just the desire to find some useful pocket of land to develop! Our non journey has raged on for 30+ years and no closer to anything thus far! Points well made I am always pleased to see relativley small clubs pushing above their weight I was dissapointed to see the pheonyx Wimbledon be relegated. I have never been a fan of the 'Premier '. Though I follow an under achieving 'big club' Aston Villa this is due to they being my original local club. Sometimes I wish Iived in in Walsal instead of Aston [when starting an interest in football ].

What’s crazy to me is how notts county in 5th division playing non-league football have an almost 20k stadium.. obviously that’s a bit of an anomaly but it just goes to show how well supported football is in this country with stadiums of that size all the way down in div 5.

You could terrace one side that wo7@: increase capacity or just have smaller seats lol surely you can modernise the ground by giving it a kick of paint and reseating etc that wouldn’t cost much

The way I see it is that there would be no point in building anything of around 30000 because we wouldn't fill it. We look to Brighton as an example but they're catchment area ranges from Chichester all the way to Kent, they are a bigger club. I don't know if it's possible to come to an agreement with the owners over knocking down the temporary stand and putting a decent one there as there is room behind it. 15000 would be good for us I think.

@@youjoker9647 we own the south stand, we were going to expand it to five thousand but for some reason didn’t, when the ground was sold, they bought three sides, goal line back is ours at the south stand end, we owned all that land at one time and Phillips sold it all, Abdul Jaffa our previous chairman bought two houses in thistlebarrow avenue, so they could be knocked down for a new entrance into the ground and expand out to where there are now houses, he got shafted by Phillips and the houses became that new estate behind the east stand. It could of been so different but money came before our club.

We own the ted Mac stand, from the goal line back it’s ours, when peter Phillips sold the ground we only had three sides or they’d own it all. We should concentrate on expanding the south stand for now, at the most we need a 18,000 stadium built to a plan so it can be expanded if need be. The bigger the stadium, the more away fans we will get. I know last season you went to a lot of grounds for the first time, what would be useful is if you supplied fans with parking advice, what pubs welcome away fans, where a pub you can mix with home fans, so many great places to go, but our fans aren’t told, if you need help with this let me know, over the years of going away year after year, week after week you make a lot of friends, just be helpful as you can spread the word.

They should at least build a bigger temporary stand behind the goal. Those temporary stands cost a pittance to dismantle and erect, and that’d take the capacity up an extra couple of thousand.

Summed up: putting the cost of infrastructure development to one side, the additional revenue from doubling or even trebling capacity is a drop in the ocean compared to the revenue from TV. The supporters are not important in this ridiculous TV money model. Realistically, they are only in the stadium to add to the theatre of the product - Live TV football. The fans are not part of the business plan.

They’re right . Just the council ( BCP ) population is about 400,000 with smallish satellite towns Broadstone, Wimborne, Verwood , West Moors , Ringwood , NewMilton taking it near to 500,000 - but it’s still a popular Retirement Zone from London & surrounding counties so they’d need to appeal to the old boys & girls whom miss White Hart Lane , Vicarage Rd or Stamford Bridge etc ( or whatever those grounds are now called ) 😁👍

It is short sighted not to hook the available fans while the going is good, yes you get those who only want to see EPL football but getting more people in regularly builds the core support - the guys who stick with it through thin and thin. Bournemouth will not be a fixture in the Prem but they can still more than fill an 11 grand stadium. My own club (Sheff Utd) built the support from mid teens to way over 20 grand by filling the ground (reasonably priced ticketing and a little success) it's produced that permanent support. It needs to be done, it won't make you a footballing power but it will elevate Bournemouth from third tier to top second tier (facilities) which is the foothold you need for when the sugar daddy won't pay any more.

I would imagine as the land for the training ground is paid for already i would imagine the build cost to be around 10 million . Once built surely the old training ground is big enough to fit a 25-30k seat stadium ? Look at Leicester as an example and expansion of their new stadium Brighton are another club who need stadium expansion . Prolonged existence in the premier league means over time a 30k stadium will be filled every week with a waiting list for season tickets . Not expanding the ground is just small team mentality

Congratulations to you on getting back to the Premiership. Your club faces many of the same problems as Pompey did , we had lots of money wasted on pretty pictures of new grounds which were nothing more than a joke. It took lots of fans chipping in a grand to eventually save the club . Seems like yours is being sensible at the moment - quality of football apart - the Premiership is more like showbiz than sport .

Buying the stadium does has a resale value, look at the £4m for the random bit of land out in the sticks. Buy Dean Court then build a big new stand with a hotel. Owning the stadium you can sell the name rights too.
