Why hide the port? - Subwoofer Box Build Jeep - CarAudioFabrication

When making the jeep subwoofer box I needed to come up with a way to transition the material to the edge of the port. In some of my previous videos I have simply used a roundover router bit and cut extra deep into the port leaving a hard edge to cut against, but in this video I wanted to give another example of what we could do to hide a port or otherwise add an insert to a subwoofer enclosure.

I love the level of detail you add to your work man. Your shop is clean and your work shows a dedication to detail and quality. I've worked in several shops and it can be difficult to find installers willing to really go that extra mile. I always told my guys that every install we did was a resume. That vehicle will be seen and heard by its owner's acquaintances and if your work is done right they too will want you on their build. I can only imagine with your quality of work that you are tightly booked. Thank you for sharing the art and so many techniques, a lot of which are new to even me, with all of us.

What you did with the cove filling in that gap when using the wood is similar to what I did on my Ram's box, except I used a premade piece of cove moulding and rabbited for it, and then used a 3/4" quarter round trim block for where the top rolls over after the port to the vertical face my amp is frenched into.

what if you just cut the perimeter of the PVC and got it nice and bent to how you like it, stick it to the box with template tape and the carry the whole box to the router table to route out the port cut out?
@CarAudioFabrication
@CarAudioFabrication 7 жыл бұрын
Haha honestly that probably would have worked and been a great solution, but once I saw the PVC part on the box I wasn't crazy about it, I felt it was too "thick" looking, part of the other reason I switched to using a thin piece of wood.
@vgullotta
@vgullotta 7 жыл бұрын
yeah, it would have been a bit unwieldy trying to route that hole while it's mounted to the rest of the box. I am making a box for my Jeep, and I think I'm going to put it in a very similar, but slightly different spot. I'll take some pics when done. No way it looks as good as yours though lol, lovin the Jeep build!

I did like the PVC idea, but I agree, 1/2" was a bit overkill. I would've done maybe 1/4 or 3/8. 1/4" would be difficult to get camfers and rabbits into and still maintain structural integrity.

to make the pvc easier to work with, we put it in the oven. the whole sheet becomes a uniform temperature and is eaqually pliable. with yours, you had a wide temperature variation throughout the material, which made is susceptible to cracking and breaking. just a thought. cheers!

another way to help with the bend in the middle of the port that you had would to be (possibly)leave a middle "support" beam and split the port into 2......not sure if that would have worked though because of the issue you had with the outer piece...just a thought. May only work with a larger port like you said

You could add the grove on a unbended piece eye balling it like doug does ( it turns out perfect everytime :)) ) then twist the piece then cut the hole ?. Theoretically the hole should be on the flat surface and it should be easy . Or i could do it for 9 milion dollars :))) . Nice job, and keep it up :)

I like the finished product, but why didn't you consider routing a relief into the box surface around the port, and inset a grille-cloth-covered frame? It could then have set flush to the surface. (Yes, the rear/bottom of the box doesn't have room for the relief, but secured on three sides would be sufficient for the small size. Just another angle.

For the bass port, I would not only drill a hole for the router insert of the bass port, tape it on the speaker box and bend it and the use a portable router and rout the bass port while using the bass port as a guide. Or move the entire speaker box on the table router.
@Deamonic
@Deamonic 7 жыл бұрын
Full sheet, no hole. form it to curve, then drill a hole for the router bit, then hand (not table) router out the hole. You just won't have that inset step on the hole's backside for your wrap, but you can do all the other things you did to the pvc before bending it....

Probably wouldn't cut the hole until after the bend, so that you can keep the strength of the plastic for the initial curve. Of course, that will make the hole much harder to cut. steamed wood may also be a better option.
@CarAudioFabrication
@CarAudioFabrication 7 жыл бұрын
This could work, only problem would be the that I wouldn’t really be able to add the rabbet groove to the backside of the hole once the piece was formed. In this case since I will be adding the cloth and vinyl wrapped around the port hole I really need that rabbet clearance.
