Thank you for all your feedback. Yonden has the following news update with added commentary (opinion) for your infotainment: Messi ended up playing in Japan after all on Wednesday, the final 30 minutes of Inter Miami’s game against Vissel Kobe, after sitting out his match in Hong Kong just three days ago citing an injury. It’s encouraging to see that his recovery has been rapid and robust after his catatonic appearance here in Hong Kong. And he just seemed happier overall in Japan, with a spring in his step and song in his heart. By way of added explanation, the reason Hong Kong fans are so upset about Messi’s no-show here is that they were subjected to a relentless advertising blitz for weeks featuring his image on every poster, billboard and screen as the biggest drawcard. Most of the fans paid to see Messi play, would not have settled for anything less, and were repeatedly led to believe he would make it worth their while. His refusal to even wave at them after the game, or pick up the offered mic to say hello, caused deep offence, as did his decision (or at least he was complicit if his club was behind all this) to hold a solo press conference upon arrival in Japan. And telling us from all the way over there that he hopes to play in Hong Kong again, which he didn’t bother to say when he was here? That may well be the unkindest cut of all.

Messi admitted himself stating in a press conference that his MRI scan showed no injury, but he still did not play because he was not so sure of it himself. That's however not a legit medical reason not to play. His contract said he should play when there is no valid reason of injury. After just a few days he did play in Japan, so that is enough proof he had no injury. So Messi basically broke contract and can be sued for it.

How supremely entitled one has to be to feel insulted by a couple of players not comimg off the bench? Or how ignorant one has to be to not realize this is common in sports? Honestly i feel ashamed that the whole crowd had to take out their disappointment on the other players (booing and jeering) when they were subbed on. Is this how one "respect" others? Did we respect players on the field? It wasnt only inter miami playing, our local team was playing too. So much for respect.

@@Thomas-ul6el well hes clearly got something against china and the biggest possibility is probably something political. In the contract it stated that he would play for at least forty five minutes unless due to immediate injury. And even though the officials stated that he had an injury, they failed to say it before hand and literally waited last minute to inform the organizers that he wouldn’t be playing. For fans in Hong Kong, the chance to see Messi on the pitch was never about boosting tourism or the economy. It’s all about the beautiful game & a chance to see their beloved hero play on the pitch. And that dream was denied last night.” (Quoted from CNN journalist Kristie Lu Stout) “Ok. So, it is very early and I'm only catching up now. If I got this right: 0. The organizers of the event took government money to facilitate the event, fully knowing that Messi playing was key to the money being awarded as a grant. 1. Messi and Suarez were injured, but Martino never mentioned to the organizers that they wouldn't play. The game was held without warning fans that the main reason they were there was not going to feature. 2. David Beckham was booed during the award ceremony for this friendly. 3. Martino acknowledges the failure in letting folks know Messi was not going to play. 4. They play Japan's Vissel Kobe on Wednesday after embarrassing losses and a win in Hong Kong. Yup, this preseason tour is going great and leaving a “wonderful image” of MLS to the rest of the world. “Well done,” Inter Miami…” (Quoted from José Roberto Nuñez, American sports journalist who specialises in reporting the Philadelphia Union in Major Soccer League) Even the normally anti-PRC Western media has also thought both Messi and Inter Miami CF share the same blame in this incident.

People who experienced it would know the effect the Real Madrid had on Hong Kong when they played a match in the city. It was a huge morale boost especially when it was not long after the SARS epidemic which devastated the city. Professional athletes gets injured or gets sick which is normal in any sport. Hence the organizers should have communicated properly with the spectators and fans. It seems like the organizers also hyped so much (for high price ticket sales) that Messi will certainly play which is not a right thing to do as you can’t predict when a player gets injured or not. Finally, also seems like massive communication gap between club and organizers. I hope that either the organizers give refund to the fans or arrange an exhibition match with Messi in future in Hong Kong, either invite the club or invite Argentina. Long story short: its not Messi’s fault but fault of the organizers.

What you said here isn't even a reflection of our public opinion and certainly doesn't present Hong Kong in a proper manner. Hate is a very strong word. Messi, You have to know the fact that being a great football star in the world, you should perform the right attitude to the fans who like you a lot, should act friendly and be generous. They make efforts spending time to join this match is only for their idol - YOU. The audiences not only come from Hong Kong, they come from everywhere. In my perspective, it's not about the money, it's about how you act respectful to the event and audiences. if you can't play in the field, should make an announcement in advance to show why you can't do it. Or even, you can just say hello to them, we are friendly. Being an adult, i think you should be mature enough. You made thousands of people disappointed. It's about personality and responsibility. Some are still defending your behaviour, however, you lost your reputation of being a great football star. - A citizen from Hong Kong

the whole editorial is ruined by him taking a swipe at football superstars. one doesn’t even need to be a football fan to understand the basic economics at work: players like Messi get paid astronomic sum in proportion to the money they bring in. how does a senior editor based in Hong Kong fail to understand this? by his logic, Taylor Swift just sings. Tom Cruise just acts. then that also mean people like John Lee and Xi should be paid a lot more as their responsibilities are a lot more than just kicking ball, singing, or acting. but wait, then he would run another editorial how they are overpaid as civil servants and tell people to chill.
