Honestly, I kind of understand the Turks. Imagine you're a Turkish soldier from back in the day (I'm sorry). The most advanced technology you have access to is, at best, gunpowder. This is the first time in your life you've ever been more than 50 kilometers from your home village. It's a dark, cold and misty night, in a foreign country you know next to nothing about. And then hundreds of THESE THINGS charge at you from the mist, screaming and waving clubs, torches and pitchforks at you. I'd shit my pants, and I'm not even ashamed to admit it!

It is cool indeed, but the English pronunciation is Budapest with the S sound, so he used it incorrectly in accordance to English grammar. Similarly to how you should say "Rome" instead of "Roma" or "Prague" instead of "Praha" for example. If anything, maybe the English name should be changed to "Budapesht" so that it sounds like it should. (also "Hungary" should be changed to "Magyarland" or something when we're at it tbh)

I'm a Hungarian living in Switzerland and though as a Hungarian I obviously believe this is the superior tradition, it reminds me of the swiss tradition called "Fassnacht" where the streets are full with people wearing scary or sometimes goofy paper-machet masks. Instead of feathers they throw around a bunch of tiny confetti, seeds or sweets. The biggest difference in my opinion is that the swiss play loud music while walking and throwing confetti

In fact, it is very similar to the traditional Slavic Carnivals, which is known by various names in Serbia, Croatia, Bulgaria, Russia, Poland ect., "poklade, proćka, maslenica, mesopust, pust....". So it is not weird for us Slavs. It kind of symbolizes the victory of light over darkness (the coming of spring), it is intended to scare away evil spirits and chase away winter.

There similar thing in Baltic countries as well(at least Latvia for sure) tho it's less of a singular parade and more similar to Halloween. Essentially people dress up as variety of animals and characters and go to their neighbors to have a massive feast. There were in fact multiple such events all throughout dark period of the year starting with Mārtiņi in October and ending with Meteņi in February. Tho the biggest masked party was definitely during winter solstice

we also have a similar tradition here in morocco called "herma taysh taysh", it's a pre-islamic tradition that has slightly adapted to Islam as it usually happens in the evening of eid adha (the day muslims kill sheep and make barbeque out of them). during which 1 or 2 persons from a neighbourhood/village wears the skin of the slaughtered sheep and goes around causing mischief and the children follow him chanting "herma taysh taysh, herma bou lhlayss" which roughly translates to "herma is being a tyrant being a tyrant, herma the master of mischief", I don't know the story or the origin of this tradition, all I know is that it's pre-islamic and that the natives of the canaries island (whom happen to be berbers, same as morocco) have a similar tradition.

I've always thought our British holiday of Guy Fawkes night is pretty funny. It celebrates the foiling of a plot to blow up king James the 1st . One of the men behind the "gunpowder" plot was a man named Guy Fawkes, he and his close friends were Catholic and were upset with the Protestant King, the plan was foiled and they were arrested, Guy was tortured to death, everything remained the same. So every year on the 5th of November we burn an effigy or scarecrow of Guy Fawkes and set off fireworks, its nickname is "bonfire night".

I remember going to these as a kid and now a few years back seeing photos of the same thing being done in the surrounding slavic nations. It makes me wonder whether it's our usual arrogance calling it an OG Hungarian thing (like goulash, which is also cooked all around central and eastern europe so possibly has a different origin/it belongs to ALL of us). Oh well, vannak jó gyerekkori emlékeim busójárásról.
