I can't fault thee reason for this video Jason. Spot on my friend. I like that you stressed we need to stretch our knowledge base if we want to get better at this wonderful hobby. I haven't touched any of my bonsai books in over 6 years. I love having them on the shelves and would never get rid of them BUT they are more a record of my early learning than anythigni can put to use now. Mind, looking at some of my trees perhaps I should have actually done more than look at the pictures :)

😂😂😂 I see an untapped market on Amazon for “My First Bonsai” book aimed at six year olds 😂😂😂 With any hobby or interest we should be stretching and enhancing our knowledge and constantly deepening our understanding and appreciation in order to progress and improve. That can be done through hands on experience as much as by deep learning around a subject. A lot of my reading has been in areas only tangentially related to bonsai - eastern philosophy, Japanese art principles etc. They just give a greater appreciation of the therapeutic and connected nature of bonsai and put words and definitions to some to the things we already know and appreciate more as gut feelings. We all know the rustic beauty of “wabi sabi” when we see it, or the melancholic feeling of “mono no aware” but perhaps don’t know that’s what they are called - at least in Japanese culture. Though of course bonsai is increasingly a global, rather than exclusively Japanese phenomenon. And any knowledge of how trees actually work at a biological level will help me kill fewer of them 🤗👍

An interesting take Jason. I do agree that many beginner books are repetitive but I feel a good book can still help a beginner or intermediate practitioner by instilling the foundations of bonsai. It's interesting because books quickly become out of date in this fast moving world but I think a good balance can be struck between books and online content. I look forward to continuing this journey with you 💪🌳💚

Thanks Alex. Yes a well put together book is a great resource and useful, particularly as an on-ramp to the hobby. And my shelves are rammed full of almost every available bonsai book. There are so many that cover the same topic though that they almost become almost inter-changeable. And beyond a certain level of knowledge or experience their value becomes diminished. This is why I’m moving on to the science and horticultural stuff - it’s simply a continued drive to learn and develop and improve. 👍 Another reason for not buying them could be that I probably already have them 🥺🤗😂

Very interesting videi Jason and you raise some very good points. People today have very low attention spans, so reading (properly reading a book from start to finish) seems to be a dying art. For me bonsai books all seem much the same. I have a few in my collection, but much like you turn more to horticulture or tree identification books, to help furthter my understanding of a species.

I’m loving your commitment to refocus your content on the horticulture/biology and some of the when’s and why’s of our hobby. Mira does it condescendingly, Candice did it effectively (miss her). Anxiously awaiting your deep dive. Thanks Jason, keep growing

Great point well made Jason! It does seem like there is a lack of understanding or communication breakdown regarding why manipulating trees this way has the result that it does and i'm guessing your study of botany and plant biology is filling in any blanks you might have had? Naturally existing bonsai can be found in nature and when it comes down to it we are trying to recreate the (usually) tough conditions those plants live in with excessive wind/cold/salt spray and nutrient poor shallow soil, but trying to make it happen more quickly :) Also it seems hard to understand for newcomers the bonsai development process that maybe you want to give them the classic deprivation bonsai soil medium only after the tree has flourished and grown enough to the point you want it to slow down. I'm drawing imaginary dots here from your video, but i kind of feel that these might be some of the point you are making, thanks and we all appreciate the help and inspiration you give us with your videos

Brilliant stuff Jason!!! My husband graduated from botany, and I from microbiology so really get where you're coming from. I will never have your eye for design - not my super power lol. However, I love observing, experimenting and understanding why plants behave the way they do, and how we can use that to our best advantage. What are you currently reading?

Thank you Sue. Sounds like a super smart household 😉 I just picked up the big hard cover Botany book (Botany: An Introduction to Plant Biology by James D. Mauseth) but I typically have seven or eight books on the go at any time. For light relief just now I’m also reading The Snow Ghost and Other Tales - Classic Japanese Ghost Stories by Lafcadio Hearn and others.

I recently got interested in bonsai but quickly realized I was trying to run before learning to walk. For me, some basic tree biology is necessary prior to styling. Just cutting here and there without knowledge of how a tree will respond is not bonsai and could possibly kill a few trees.

Hey Jason! I just watched your video about your learning journey and it was amazing. I'm in a similar situation where I've read a lot of bonsai books, but they all seem to be quite similar. Could you please share the biology books that you've been reading? By the way, I sent you a message on Instagram with a question. Thank you so much, and please keep making those awesome videos!

Thanks Gustav. I can recommend the following books on trees biology, and botany in general (all available on Amazon): Applied Tree Biology Andrew D Hirons and Peter A Thomas Wiley-Blackwell Trees: A complete guide to their biology and structure Roland Ennos Botany: An Introduction To Plant Biology James D Mauseth Jones & Bartlett Publishers As academic level books they tend to be very expensive. I consider it an investment in knowledge. Regarding Instagram, I seldom see or check messages on there so apologies if it takes a while to reply. 🙏

I was gifted a juniper bonsai and it's been 6 months and it still looks like a crooked stick with 4 small patches of bush. It's green not dry or dying just looks like it was something that never should have been turned into a bonsai..I'm ready to throw it away. Is it salvageable?

Where were any books actually burned? At what timestamp do you see an actual book on actual fire? This was done as an attention grabbing intro and to create an emotive response - you will note that when you see fire I have zoomed in and you don’t see any burning books - just a bin filled with cardboard.
