Amps are a very particular thing, each type have their own flavor. You never really know what amp you will connect with until you try it. There is so much choice out there, so why settle for an amp that's been around for 50 years? In this video I will explain the difference between the Custom and Vintage channels and how I use both of them.

Official Fender Product Description:
1968 was a transitional year for Fender amps, with tone that was still pure Fender but a look that was brand new. With a silver-and-turquoise front panel and classy aluminum "drip edge" grille cloth trim, the Deluxe Reverb received a fresh new face as it remained the ideal recording and performing amp. Small, light and moderately powered, it produced big tube tone, with world-class Fender reverb and vibrato effects. For countless guitarists ever since, the Deluxe Reverb has been the go-to amp for classic Fender sound. The '68 Custom Deluxe Reverb Amp pays tribute to the classic look, sound and performance of Fender's late-'60s "silverface" amps. In a special twist, both channels boast reverb and tremolo, and the "custom" channel has a modified Bassman® tone stack that gives modern players greater tonal flexibility with pedals. The amp also features quicker gain onset and reduced negative feedback for greater touch sensitivity. The '68 Custom Deluxe Reverb's single 12" Celestion® G12V-70 speaker also delivers a more distinctively rock 'n' roll flavor.

Good for you. I sold my Boogie and bought a Princeton. The sound on my Princeton is so nice and it’s such a simple amp.

I bought my Silverface for the same reasons as the OP. It did have some factory assembly issues that resulted in blown fuses. But once I got through that I just love it. Lot's of versatility as described. The Custom channel with the bassman tone stack makes it possible to add so much warmth and depth to my '63 Tele. The Celestial speaker seems a bit brighter than the Jenson on the 65RI. I demoed both 65 and 68 RI. Both wonderful. 68 won me over for the reasons described.

I bought the ac15 second hand, and it's a very nice amp, but you're right about it. It lacks something in the tone, and it's just not an amp that i can't wait to plug in to. My dad owns a 71 pro reverb with the dual speakers, and it sounds glorious. I am always trying to recapture that sound and especially the emotion of playing that amp. I plugged in to a 68 custom deluxe reverb last week at a local shop, and i was hooked. I felt that same feeling and the sounds were so full and sensitive coming through that amp. I bought it on the spot. The guy sold it to me for $1400 even though it retailed for $1600, so that just sweetened the deal for me.

I bought one used a few months ago. Had a problem with the reverb not always working. Took it to a shop. They looked over it and also found some cold solder joints, which they fixed. Made a huge difference. I love it now. Before the repairs, I thought I would probably sell it. Great tone and best reverb I have ever heard.

I have a 68 SFDRRi. One of the best deluxe reverbs I’ve ever played or heard. Also seems to take pedals amazingly well. Tried swapping speakers too- Celestion gold, green back, GH12H and the stock in this amp is truly the best. Gigged with this amp a ton and it always delivers. Plus, I’m a 70s kid and I I grew up with a fender silverface amps so these really speak to me.

Sold my Mesa Boogie Lonestar Classic and got the Fender Custom Deluxe Reverb RI a few years ago. You can use an ABY pedal to bridge the Custom (bassman) and Vintage channels. It is like having a third secret sauce channel. One more thing, the 1 and 2 inputs on Custom and the 1 and 2 inputs on Vintage all have different tones. Plug high output guitars into the #2 inputs and low output guitars into the #1 inputs.

@patricklundquist9869
@patricklundquist9869 2 жыл бұрын
@@danabiondo9243 ABY switchers are primarily used to feed two guitar amps from a guitar. The AB designates the ability to switch between amplifiers, while the Y means that both amps can be turned on at once. To use an ABY switch, connect your guitar or the output from your pedal chain to the ABY, and from the ABY, you feed the two amps.

The 65 blackface reissue is not hand-wired. That's why it's basically the same price as your 68. It's the '64 Custom Deluxe Reverb that is hand-wired in the USA, and it costs a little bit more than twice the 65 and 68. I have the 64 hand-wired, and I recently tried the 65 and 68. I agree with you - and too my ears the 65 sounded a little flat and the 68 sounded more lively and dynamic.

@Joe Jones First a tube went bad- alone that wouldn't be an amp issue, then a fuse blew. Still waiting to see if the issues are related but haven't been in town much to give it a proper workout. The amp was running extremely hot when the tube fried, then several weeks after I replaced it the fuse popped when I turned the amp on. I've also be through two Princetons last year and even Fender couldn't tell me what the problem was. Add in my issues with my Bassman and two Twins and I'm just not a big fan of Fender quality control over the years. Though my little Pro Junior IV and Bassbreaker seem to be holding tough......

Jason Ayala Spare greetings from Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 I mean , I would like to hear what both channels on at the same time would sound like . On some HiWatt amps they actually have a “linked” input so you get both channels on at the same time

On an Anderson’s amp demo video , they used an ABY box/pedal and had two guitar leads, one going into each channel . As the amp didn’t have channel switching , so had to use an ABY . But then you can have both channels on at the same time I think.

AC15 not having enough bottom end? I usually put a low-cut in front of it to tame it a bit. Jason Ayala Spare I have a few amps I choose from for gigs. I usualy keep using the same for months on end, 'till I feel the need for change. So I've been giging with an AC15 for about a year and a half. Not the most comfortable amp to play. Not as pleasing as a deluxe, but works very well in a band setting. The combination is probably great. I've yet to use the top boost channel live, though. Killer sound, full on with my SG.

I'd love to hear you crank the volume up to like 7, 8, and 10 to hear how the different channels break up. Maybe you could demo the A/B box switching between channels with the volume cranked? My understanding is that these silver face Customs are supposed to break up sooner and sound dirtier than the blackface versions, and that's just what I'm looking for. I understand this would be improbable if you're in an apartment or have sensitive neighbors. Just an idea. thanks

Does handwired really matter that much? I would pay for it but the cost is doubled for something that I personally can't tell a difference with.
@seanmarshall5569
@seanmarshall5569 4 жыл бұрын
Alex Murphy it depends who you ask. Some consider handwired Amps better sounding by default, but this is of course debated. Generally tho, handwired amps are considered simply more reparable than PCB amps, but that does not technically equate to a better sounding amp. This means that if your PCB amp needs maintenance, it might be expensive, or maybe not even possible. Handwired can last forever, then, bc parts can be fixed or replaced

I've only ever owned the Blackface. The cleans and reverb are amazing. However, I didn't like how ice picky it sounded with certain distortion pedals. I've found the Rat sounded best as opposed to the DS1(properly dialed in, regardless of the year) and a certain fuzz. The 68 spiked my interest because I've heard it takes pedals better. However, you were saying you had issues with too much bass or too much treble. Were you able to dial in an 'in between' setting on the Bassman channel?
@JasonAyalaSpare
@JasonAyalaSpare 4 жыл бұрын
I use an A/B switch like a channel switcher to go between channels. I've set the bassman style channel for bridge pickups and the brighter blackface style channel for neck pickups.

The vintage channel has more headroom, gets pretty loud before it starts break up. The Custom (bassman) channel breaks up earlier.

I set my vintage channel with treble between 6 & 7 and Bass at 6. I only use the vintage channel for the neck pickup, because it's way too bright with the bridge pickup. I've set up the custom channel for bridge pickups and I use an AB box to switch between the channels.

I chose the 68 DRRI because they replaced the normal channel with a custom (bassman) channel which gives me more options. Also you can access the reverb and tremolo on both channels on the 68.
@TheHumppaidiootti
@TheHumppaidiootti 3 жыл бұрын
68 is probably better of the two, it is not really silverface even thought it looks like one. You can jump channels on 68 without sound going thin, because they are in phase. One interesting thing you can do with 65 is jumping channels and setting volumes to maximal noise cancelling. Then apply tremolo and you get weird phasey tremolo when vibrato channel fades itself in and out. Also reverb gets very intense when channels are cancelling eachother, you almost can get 'wet only' sound. This is not really why you should choose 65 over 68, never seen anybody else using it that way, but I personally like out of phase options more than in phase channel jumping

@JasonAyalaSpare
@JasonAyalaSpare 5 жыл бұрын
I can't say I've had a problem with hiss, even with drive pedals I don't get any more hiss than usual. My main issue with this amp is that the spring reverb is very dark sounding. But as I use a reverb pedal, I'm not too bothered about it.

CesitarLabarthe: I currently own the 68 Deluxe Reverb and have also spent a good deal of time playing the 68 Princeton. I preferred the 68 Deluxe reverb over the Princeton. To me, the Princeton sounded thin and got very flabby in the bottom end. That said, at lower volumes it sounded very nice. I think that the stock speaker in the 68 Princeton is not very good quality, and given that it is a 10", does not take much to push it beyond its capability. The Fender Deluxe Reverb 68 reissue is the best sounding amp overall, I have owned. I have owned and played live with many different amps over the past 35 years and I am very pleased with this new Deluxe Reverb (it also takes pedals very well - I use an OCD for overdrive). I would highly recommend one for a variety of music from country, rock, blues and even jazz.

I own the 68 DR and the Marshall DSL40cr and love them both equally. I don't think I could sell either. Some of my previous handwired classic and boutique amps may do one thing better than the DSL or 68 DR but none of them do many things as well as the Marshall or Fender. These are modern day classic amps.

@@terryorr I settled on a 68 custom Princeton. More manageable volume and a bit more growl than the deluxe. Might add a 65 or 68 deluxe later if I need more stage volume or head room... But the Princeton miked did this trick so far (through a 1x12 ext cab). All great amps!
