Human Nature IMO it’s about the macho motorcycle mindset. I’ve owned scooters and 600 Suzuki’s. I’ve learned one thing about the sport of motorcycling, ride what you want and don’t be swayed by idiotic opinions. Younger guys have trouble being their own man and want to go with the flow of the group.

Think its due to Motorcycles in the US being toys in the public mindset. A scooter isn't "Fun" or attractive compared to a Fireblade or a Harley, so people refuse to see past the first impression and find the utility and comfort something like this brings.

@Greg Myers ....."I want to see more big scooters on the highway" ... and Honda, with their DCT offerings, (to a lesser extent for commercial trucks, the Allison) an "old fashioned" gear trans, not a CVT, that shifts itself is proving most manual transmissions are obsolete.

I lived in Taiwan from 1998 till 2007 and KYMCO was considered to be one of the top brands in the scooter world. Also remember Taiwan was actually a part of Japan for nearly 50 years and had a lot of influence on their culture and business environment. A lot of this shows in their motorcycle/scooter manufacturing.

So here’s my story. I bought a brand new Kymco in 2009. It was 50cc. I loved it. $6 in fuel per week, commuting 50 km everyday. I put 8400 kms in the first and only year I owned it. I found myself longing for a clutch, and gears. So I saved $900 and went through a motorcycle training course. Then I sold my trusty Kymco, which didn’t give me a lick of trouble ever, and acquired a Honda CM450. Then a Honda CB750. Then a Honda GL1100 Goldwing. Then a Kawasaki GTR1000 Concours. Then a Suzuki B-King1300. Then a Honda F6C Valkyrie, and finally a Suzuki DR650. I now have 46000 on the DR, and am thinking about maybe a new Goldwing, perhaps a Honda VFR1200... who knows what my next bike will be. All thanks to a little Taiwanese 50cc scooter.

@@j.thomas7128 I miss that bike, but also I don’t. It just had so much power that I could never legally use. And the gears were super tall; you could make 160 kph in first gear. When I first bought it, the sales person suggested that I just leave it in third all the time, and treat it like an automatic 😂. Anyway, I didn’t fit comfortably on it, and threw a lot of money at it in moto gp style rear-sets and a Corbin seat, in an attempt to get comfy on it. Eventually I traded it in for a dual sport.

@@caryd67 Thank you. Tall gears and more power than i would ever need are things i can live with. Hearing that it has enough torque to ride third gear all day is welcoming. The FZ1 was setup originally as an upright track bike that i could still street, but over time, it's evolved into a tourer with top bag and panniers and Im getting too old to ride Hooligan on the SM. Thanks for your advice! I'm starting my search for a B-King!

@caryd67 3 жыл бұрын
@@j.thomas7128 one final thing I remember is the tires, specially the rear tire: it’s a pretty wide rim compared to the Hayabusa, and tire choices are quite limited for the B-King. I think when a lot of people hear 'Taiwan' or that something is made in Taiwan they think sweatshops and they think of all the stories about poor production quality they heard about Chinese products. If that's you, I'd urge you to do some research on the country (or region of China, if you're Chinese). Taiwan has the 22nd highest GDP in the world, ahead of Sweden and Belgium, with a relatively small population of only 25 million people. Their industry focuses on high tech, with big companies you might recognize like HTC, ASUS, MSI and countless others. If they're going to be good at anything, they're going to be good at scooters - everyone in Taiwan rides a scooter, they love them.

@@irnagtx2366 that is just not true. Kymco sold over 565,000 scooters in 2019 because they are a good brand and a reliable product. In a total scooter fleet of 16 million in Taiwan for 1 company to sell 565,000 in one year indicates that the Taiwanese people trust Kymco. (this is normally enough miles to 'seat the engine well' on any Honda motorcycle, never mind 'wear it out!**' Honda 'learned their lessons' and brought bike production back to Japan where it belongs since 2008.

They are not a new company, they were originally part of Honda but split from them in the early 1960's and started the Kwan Yang Motor COmpany, hence KYMCO. They not only continue to make engines for Honda, but other companies, including BMW! They make a couple of smaller bikes, similar to a Gromm or the Kawi 125, but are less expensive since they are manufactured in Taiwan. That being said, I totally agree with you on getting parts if and when needed. I like to buy consumables up front (like brake pads/shoes, gaskets for often serviced areas, ect...) and nobody aftermarket makes shoes yet. I've been waiting for months to get them along with a few other things from our local dealer and that is the only thing that would make me hesitant to buying another Kymco in the future. I hear it's easier to get parts for the scooters and quads though. i used to have a Kymco Gran dink 50cc scooter. I loved driving it, it was stable and usable. (not fast by any means... because scooter laws in NL kinda suck). but the thing i like most that i wish my Piaggio Mp3 500 had from it: the mirrors. the mirrors on the Gran dink were located in a great place and offered so much visibility compared to what i have now. (and yes i drive the Mp3 500 because i have yet to get my motorcycle license (working on that atm though, had to wait till i was 24 to get to be able to drive on everything at once, this was available with a car license because laws)).

I’ve worked some in Taiwan and seen tens of thousands of Kymco products on the road. From my experience, the typical Taiwanese worker is well paid, diligent, and does quality work. Probably equal to Japanese build quality, if not quite the same design standards. If something by Kymco struck my fancy, I’d have no issue buying it.

Great video thanks. I also heard the name the first time here in Singapore, but the dealer seems very kind and thorough in his explanations and already telling me about "ride trips" they're having to Malaysia and so on. It also seemed very comfortable at the shop, and hardly shakes when the passenger gets on. I might just buy it although it's $20,000 in Singapore currently, in Singapore dollars. Thanks man!

@@Johnwillbegone @John Depends on how tall you are, how much highway etc. The Burgmans are great, 400 is plenty in town and for some highway. The 650 is a great long distance highway ride. If you want sportier a Kymco or BMW 650 is good (Kymco makes the drivetrains for BMW). Silverwing's are all over 10 years old now. You can find a low mileage one for cheap I'll bet. Supposed to change drivebelts on all of these around 16,000 miles but I've never heard of anyone having a failure. Honda PCX150 is capable of doing a couple of highway exits but that's it.

My old 600cc Honda Silverwing touring scooter had a very similar power band set up. Took 8 seconds to get to 60 MPH. But out on the Interstate accelerating from 65 MPH from behind a slow Semi to 90 MPH was effortless. And STILL had power to spare at 90! KYMCO builds A1 quality stuff. The repair history proves that. They had like 2 models in their history that were a bit glitchy, but *overall* they are VERY reliable. I don't own one, I don't sell them, and I am not paid by anyone to say that! LOL Just an honest observation from my last 5 years reading about, watching on YT, and talking to owners at the scooter rally's about KYMCO.

KYMCO is a portmanteau for Kwang Yang Motor Company. I've been living in Taiwan for the past two years now... everybody and their grandmothers gets around on two wheels. Even dogs in Taiwan ride scooters! When I arrived in Taipei, I picked up a 1995 Kymco Freeway 125 with 14,500km on the odometer (it only counts up to 99,999km). I rode all around Taiwan on it, and put 30,000km (18,641 miles) on it in two years. I had to replace plenty of things on it due to age, wear and tear, but it never once left me, my wife and dog stranded. We've even been over the Central Cross-Island Highway, which reaches a height of 3,200 meters (10,498 feet), six times. On one occasion, we were riding through Taroko Gorge, which starts at sea level and runs 54 miles to the He Huan Shan area, which is over 10,000 feet. All the dudes riding cruisers or sports bikes gave me a thumbs up as they rode past me and my wife, who was holding our medium-sized dog in her lap. Even with passengers, a big camping backpack and two trunks stuffed with food, the Kymco Freeway held its own on that busy, narrow, winding road. When we got to the gas station, we definitely got more looks than the guys with expensive bikes... which goes to show you, it's not WHAT you ride, it's HOW you ride. I finally had to give up Little Kymie this week. Age, riding fast and up one too many steep mountain roads finally took its toll. She was blowing plumes of blue smoke and burning up a quart of motor oil every five days, and I didn't feel like spending money at the mechanic when it could be better put towards a new bike. After test riding a 150cc Sym, PGO Hotshot, and Kymco G5, I bought the Kymco for its superior handling and acceleration.

First, you never check out your accessories after you start riding down the road. Not safe. Do it before you start riding, so you know what everything does (and if it actually works like it's intended to) Use your turn signals, so other drivers know your intentions. I don't understand why you give reviews about bikes when you ride worse than some beginners.

Just saw this video in my suggested feed. I know this video is pretty old and I haven't read through all the comments. So here's some additional info. Kymco made the engines for the BMW maxi scooters: C600 Sport, C600 GT, C650 Sport, and C650 GT. I happen to own a 2016 C650 Sport. I bought it used in 2020. It's been a great bike. No issues with the engine/trans. Lots of storage options, features, and is very comfortable one or two up. I'm actually looking to maybe adding another maxi scooter into my stable; either a used C650, new C400 GT, or a Kymco AK550. And I have a 04 ZX-10R and a 22 S1000RR to give some idea of my perspective.

Way back i got an 02 Kymco People 50cc scooter that someone had gotten, dropped and got scared. I got it for free and it had sat for a year. I fixed it up and rode it around for fun. It topped at 45mph however if you removed the green wire from the computer it disabled the limiter and i could hit 55mph... Down hill... with no wind. Lol. Now it was well built and had bigger tires and felt fun to ride. There was one flaw. The throttle used a tiny spring to open the throttle and it hung up open when i was at a gas station. I turned it on and the scooter took off full throttle. Luckily i had my hand on the back and grabbed it. It tool me in circles till i pulled it over and it shut off. I fixed it and it was fun to zip around in. I sold it for $1000. It was goodnbn quality but expensive. The origional owner said it was like $2500. I even rode it with a passenger in the rain one day from work. So not a bad brand i would say.
