Hey y'all. This topic is very challenging and sensitive for many. I have been wanting to do a video on this for a while, but I have to admit, I am nervous about it. I love to have open dialogue, but I also know that the internet can become counterproductive to real conversation (putting it mildly). So I hope we can all keep our comments kind and share our thoughts and opinions respectfully 😊
Everything I am sharing is based on my personal opinions and beliefs. I would love to hear your thoughts! I never intend to come from a place of judgement. It's all love and respect ❤️❤️❤️

My dear sis, I must comment, I love the way you worded, and informed your listeners in this video. It gives me a way to hopefully explain to my husband who has a different belief (more mainstream as you mentioned) than us, and why I would want to also pick a secular homeschool curriculum for our two daughters I would truly love to homeschool. Thank you so much for this video!!!!!!!! May your family and your work as a mother, wife and sister continue to be blessed!

I love that you made this video. Lots of people rave about certain Christian curriculum. Go hard for them. I have difficulty wrapping my head around certain Christian curriculum. My husband and I like to think outside of (the box) Christianity as we are choosing curriculum for children. Most of those curriculums have a lot of stories to read, which our children are not here for at all. It doesn't mesh with their learning style. To knick pick all of what we believe in one curriculum becomes too tedious for us. I agree with you. You ain't got no time for fixing curriculum. Us as well. Although this upcoming school we have chosen some Christian for some subjects we still are hard core secular because lots of the time Christian curriculum can be a little not enough for our children. They need to be challenged. I feel like we have to supplement a lot. We enjoy the student-led curriculum because at the end of the day I am a mom, wife and need to fulfill those rolls too. When do I get a break. We school in the very early morning like at 6:30am and finish if we are lucky at 10:00 am. Sometimes it's 11:00 am. The rest of the day I am mommy and wife. Plus, our children need time to play. I believe you still can teach Bible and use secular. There are ways. Like you stated, you want your children to choose for themselves when it comes to Christianity. We are the same. Thanks!

Great video! A lot of the homeschool curricula I have come across seems to only further promote the division between issues like science and religion. Constantly forcing you to choose one over the other, when in fact they can coexist. A lot of families are doing exactly that. Having a solid understanding in both areas can really help a person not only be respectful of others beliefs, but in the process of learning, find out what they themselves believe to be true.

Yes!! When I’m teaching math I just want to teach math!! I don’t want to be on guard for possible poor representations of my Christian faith in the curriculum. Core subjects need to have zero agenda

I know this is an old video but I’m so glad I found you! You were saying a lot of the things I have been thinking when researching curriculum, and after looking at your Instagram and other videos, I am thrilled to have found another homeschool mama that shares our beliefs. New subscriber here 👋🏼

Texas! This takes me back to when I was raising my children only at that time it seemed to be working Mom's in public school vs stay at home Mom's in public school. Never understood why me being a working Mother was frowned upon. Seems like the same challenges, just a different struggle. Nice Job on the video ❤

We do a mix. I honestly don't depend on the Christian curriculum to teach doctrine. In my opinion, faith and doctrine should be taught by Church and parents. Its sort of a supplement to that I would say. The one I use uses the Bible to encourage strong morals not teaching a specific denomination so it works out.

I feel like I could have made this video verbatim! We are christian but don't align our beliefs with the main stream christian views either. Finding curriculum was so challenging so this year I scraped a lot of what we had been using for more secular choices and I am so excited! Thank you for speaking out on this subject because it does sometimes seem like it has to be one at or the other it's nice to know that there is other christians who feel the same way!!

I agree that there appears to be a pretty strong division between two "camps" within homeschool...while, as you said, we share the same ultimate goal. I'll use either Christian or secular curriculum, I don't really choose based on one or the other, because like you said, it's a tool, and I my main goal is the tool that best and easiest to use for my family. I have used Christian curriculum that I detested (haha!) and Christian curriculum that I really enjoyed, as well as a variety of secular curriculum. One of the reasons that I appreciate Sonlight is because they include Bible resources, but many (not all) of their books are secular and written from a wide variety of perspectives. I have many distinct memories of my mom using Bible curriculum and straight up telling us, "Well I think this is flat-out wrong and here's why, let's investigate this." So....even for mainstream Protestants...I don't think that we're ever 100% going to agree with every single thing the curriculum says, and I don't think agreement is the goal, but, like you said, critical thinking and building the skill of deciding what you do believe and why you believe it. My husband and I come from slightly different 'camps' within the church and I always joke we fell in love over good-natured arguments on the role of predestination.

I've only looked into secular curriculum for many of the same reasons. But you're absolutely right- we always end up tweaking any type of teaching materials that we do choose to use anyway.

We are Christian and while we do use Christian curriculum, I don’t put a lot of stock into the fact that it’s Christian. I would be willing to use secular curriculum if I needed to because like you said curriculum still needs to be evaluated for whether or not it’s a right fit for learning styles and such. Critical thinking is absolutely important. We live in a Muslim country in the Middle East at the moment, so our kids are welcome to ask lots of questions about what we teach them, things we discuss about our faith, etc. Great video!

Thank you for this! As a Christian homeschool mom, I don't want a language arts program that says B is for Boaz. Like, it's great to teach them biblical figures during bible time, but let's just stick to banana, ball, etc. Is that too much to ask? 😄

Yes we need more secular curriculum options! I dislike most homeschool vids always have Christian curriculums and almost no info on secular. This is why i have to or are stuck to buying on teachers pay teachers small courses or activities at a time.

I'm an Animistic Heathen - so yeah, no curriculums out there specifically for us - but even if their was I most likely wouldn't use it as I don't think religion/belief belongs in a child's curriculum other than how it has historically influenced society - and both sides should be told to the best of our ability pointing out that history is written by the Victor's = history is not always history.

I remember that division in the 90’s I part timed homeschooled in the 90’s and was a Christian kid being homeschooled in a Christian way. Wen we had to pull our kids out of school we didn’t want them to feel labelled. We use wat curriculum works for our kids. We used a secular science curriculum and I was often saying the line “we are not monkeys that got lucky” to my kids. I teach critical thinking skills watever curriculum we use. I’m willing to change my teaching style to meet my kids learning style.
