Do you feel like a gerbil on a wheel at your job? Robin Barrett definitely did, but after experiencing a devastating catalyst in her life, decided it was time she owned that wheel. She sold her home and belongings and moved into an RV. But Robin is no bum; She's a digital nomad, working hard as a writer and KZfaqr. Feeling freer than ever, Robin explains how a nomadic way of thinking can help you chase your dreams. As the creator of CreativityRV.com and the Creativity RV KZfaq channel, Robin Barrett encourages others to discover the possibility of a modern, nomadic life through which professional and personal passions can converge and flourish.
After twenty years as a business owner and successful entrepreneur, Robin discovered what many of us do: that chasing the status quo doesn’t necessarily create happiness. But how does one find a balance between making a living and living a life of joy? For her, the solution was found in the most unlikely of places…a motorhome.
Robin was not a camper or RV enthusiast - in fact, she had never been inside of one until the day she decided to give up a ‘sticks-and-bricks’ house in exchange for mobility and freedom. She escaped corporate America to live and write full-time while traveling. Now, she helps others navigate their way into the life of an American Digital Nomad, have happy travels and be free.
As a creator, she shares her personal journey and gives others the tools they need to do the same, including through her book, Be a Nomad, Change Your Life: The Ultimate Guide to Living Full-time in a Van or RV which has been a bestseller since its release in January 2019 and through her KZfaq videos which have been viewed more than 8 million times. Her latest book Work at Home While You Roam and upcoming book, 19 Nomads, both help others navigate the variety of options and styles available to all who want to travel and live now. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I lived in an RV, for 5 1/2 years, and absolutely loved it!!! It was “heaven on earth”. I let the spirit lead me, U.S., Canada and Mexico! A lot of people asked me if I ever got lonely...never! It is well worth it...if there is even an INKLING in that direction!!!

Robin you did well. Your sister was remarkable, in that while she was facing her own death, she was thinking of you and offering up sisterly advice that has made all the difference. Great speech! I've been following you for quite a while. My husband and I sold our large Victorian home and bought a toy hauler. We're currently stationary in Omaha to be near our kids and grandkids, working and saving up to start travelling in December. He's training to be an RV inspector and I'm working on opening my own Etsy shop. Huge life change! But we don't miss our old life at all.

Thank you for sharing your story. My dear friend, who was like a sister to me, lost her battle with pancreatic cancer when she was 45. She wanted to go to Italy and we tried to make it happen but she was too sick. I learned a great deal from her about living your dreams and mine is to live like you do. I watch your videos and am learning a lot. My friend Sheridan taught me well that life is short so live your dreams before it’s too late.

I'm not a big fan of Robin's KZfaq channel, but what she's saying here is spot on! To me, her channel is a classic example of content for content's sake. But she still has a large following and makes enough money to live on. And she lives far more expensively than most other digital nomads and "vandwellers." I live on less than $400 per month, and $146 of that is covered by VA disability, which is almost enough to pay my cell-phone/internet plus car insurance. Heck, this past three weeks, I probably spent less than $40 in day-to-day expenses. And I've spent the entire time taking hikes, relaxing, and thinking. Currently, I earn my money working short-term gigs like camp-host or Census worker. After my next gig, I'll have enough to live on for over four years. I start getting my Social Security in two. And then I will receive over four times as much as I need to live on. But only because I have drastically reduced my cost of living. So, that's my point, I guess. The very first step towards this kind of freedom is to drastically reduce your cost of living. I lived in my vehicle in (believe it or not) Austin for two years while continuing to work at a job I hated. But I was saving money. Now I live in my converted minivan in the Arizona desert and I am more comfortable and stress free than I have been my entire life. I don't have a nice dinette in an expensive Windstream. But I have the same backyard. And, most of the time, I have it all to myself.

OMG Robin - your talk is amazing, I watched it 3X this evening. So much to share with you about the relevance of your speech and what I do for a living. I am a former CEO, now work from home. However, I have a desire to travel my country, Canada and work from a class B motor home. I can develop my work on line and enjoy the freedom and the delight of exploring my country. I would especially like to visit the west coast. I live in Ontario on Georgian Bay, an hour and a half north of Toronto. Thank you - very well done. You have given me a lot to think about.

You made me cry. I'm the big sister, I have those big sister responsibilities. Right now I'm caregiver to my 92 yr old parents, who up until recently were able to make decisions for themselves, etc. That's no longer the case. One day, I''ll get there, until then I'll watch you and dream of adventures.
