Why I choose to “have no ambition”

It doesn’t matter what others think. I’m content to just be.
Natasha Helwig said, "You are here to live. Not to earn, not to stress, not to prove, not even to please. Just to live." I know its hard, but we can work on “unlearning” our always-on, always more mindset.
Instead of letting our work be the central axis around which everything orbits, WE can reframe our lives in terms of things that we truly care about. A good home, a good enough job and a successful relationship.
Yes, the harsh reality of affordability these days means that scaling back is a huge privilege many can’t consider yet.
But if we’ve already reached a stage where it’s possible, I think it’s worth considering that valuing sufficiency over achievement, more free time over more money, is a better recipe for fulfillment.
Work to live, not live to work.
Maybe some people really enjoy living a fast-paced life where they overcome new challenges every day but I also don’t think there’s anything wrong with not wanting that.
There is so much value to embracing our ordinary lives and opening our eyes to the magic of our mundane.

I think some of the commentors are missing the point. She is not in the US but in Bali or an island similar to Bali. It doesn't take much USD to achieve an easy carefree lifestyle like this if you put your mind to it and work hard for a few years. You could work and save and invest or work remote and live on a wonderful island with all the nomad visa options available. If you want to stay in the rat race that is part of the US culture, it's your choice but being free and relaxing like she is showing in this video is really possible if you want it.

Well said. That's the only real currency we have in life. Time. Make the most of it doing what you love. You can live a good life anywhere but definitely Bali is a slice of heaven. Not sure how affordable it is as inflation has driven prices up everywhere but you can find affordable places to live outside of big cities. Like in America if you live in the NYC San Fran and big cities it's expensive but if you move further out into suburbs and smaller towns you can find affordable housing and your own little slice of heaven without a mortgage noose and enjoy life a little. But she touched on a very important point. Live below your means. Control your spending. I see alot of people make good money working long hours to pay for the big house Mercedes Hermes handbag and all the materialism of the modern world. And there's nothing wrong with that if you have the money and it brings you joy. So I think it comes down to pursing what you love and managing your money wisely.

I live in a one bedroom apartment in a city/country I hate, everybody I love is an ocean and an ‘impossible’ visa process away, but there’s things I can do to be present and prioritize contentment over the rat race many find themselves in. I can choose to spend less time on my phone doom scrolling, to take my time to really taste the food, to go on a walk while I talk to my friend instead of rotting in bed, be in nature more, pause to smell the flowers. The view from my room is grey and hideous but I still enjoy the sunrise from my bed. Yes, circumstances can suck compared to this lady’s, but *you* gotta make the best of what you got. You’d be surprised how many people make all the money you dream of, but never spend it, because they’re stuck mentally just like the rest of us.

or spend it on meaningless things and then always strive for more while feeling empty. I knew someone very wealthy who was buying his 7th sports car but admitted he feels empty. I kept telling him he can just leave instead of competing with his Calabasas neighbors, but they’re just as mentally trapped. Trust me.

True makes me so sad to think about my father never could relax, he would come home grinding his teeth and he was the most patient loving man and yet societal pressures would do him in and it used to hurt me watching him so stress at home. Dealing with the crap at work and then coming home and dealing with my selfish narcissistic and inconsiderate mother and all us kids, the constant grind. I cry when I think about him. He's at peace with God now. How the matrix programmed that generation into the next

Then whats the difference between humans and fish. Humans have sense of purpose. My sense of purpose is to control my mind rather than mind controlling my soul, because we are souls that are permanent in this existence. Its smart to work for soul rather than work for temporary pleasures. You can achieve this only when you go through ups and downs and not by relaxing in some remote location. Pleasure is temporary and the pleasure of not working is also temporary. If pleasure was the goal of life, I would be doing sex all the day. I work because that is the way to make my soul control my mind.

I have been saying this for awhile now. I moved to Thailand when I was 23 because I didn't want to conform to the norms of society. I am 70 now and still here in Thailand living a life filled with love and good health.🙏

@@scotlan9144 Teaching was the first thing I did but basically I did anything which provided me with a visa. I never actually looked for work but people I met offered me opportunities. I lived on whatever I made but did not touch savings and longterm investments back home. My history of saving is a longer story than I want to get into here. That was all so long ago that it is not relative to what is available today.

Realistically she will regret the idea of not having kids is dangerous. if simply 1 million people each year decided to not procreate children coneceivng human future it would lead to collapse. She must conceive children with her male mate. She is not truly full filled. That isn't for me to say. Its for me to point and say truth. She doesn't need corporate Job no woman needs it but she can when she wants becoming depressed when she doesn't want it. But those are the consequences of your bad decisions wetheryou realize they're bad at the moment not. God bless all they regret their mistakes for me It hurts a lot and id learn that way. as male if I don't have children stage 21 I'm really losing as she and her husband are double my age. its not good for their mental health at all.

@@IsraelCountryCube it’s totally fine, extinction is a part of life. We are not god. God gave us free will and choosing not to have children is a part of that. I met plenty of childless elderly men and women and they are just like everyone else. Depression affects everyone and actually affects people with children more than those without children.

@@chantalboileau7692 Just. Do. It. I sold all and left US 19 yrs ago for Southeast Asia. Zero regrets. Learned a LOT about myself that no school could teach you. I live very simply, and enjoy the simple things like beers or coffees with friends, exercising, watching movies, writing. Go somewhere for a visit, and connect with other expats. i realized this after a miscarriage in 2022. i worked remote but was still working myself nonstop. i'd be so tired sometimes during my pregnancy that i'd fall asleep in meetings. after losing the baby i realized all i wanted was that time back with my baby, to spend those weeks being more present with them. now my whole perspective has changed on work and the rat race... the present moment is all we really have.

As a woman who became officially disabled in 2018, I have really been bothered by the notion that you're only worth as much as you make. It's been a whole different mental challenge to feel my value, to understand my worth of I didn't have a career. I'm home every day and survive on a small amount of money. But it allows me to slow down and notice things that others don't care about in their rush. And I love the stillness. There's so much beauty and grace in the stillness. I read, cook, journal, write letters to family, take care of the cat and dog. And I am working towards having an online business with my daughter, selling vintage and antiques, which is my great passion. I am never bored. I have begun to find the good in this imperfect body. Thank you for sharing this. A simple life is all I aspire to. So nice to meet like-minded people! UPDATE: Just wanted to thank everyone for their comments. It's been very uplifting in a sense to connect with others and I'm grateful for each of you who bother to read my "essay" ☝️lol Bless you all 🙏

I'm 62, visually-impaired to the point of not being able to drive, and I also believe I have other undiagnosed disabilities which have made it next to impossible for me to keep a FT job. (Not get, but keep) I was dumped by my ex-wife after 20 years because I could never be the PWE she was looking for, and she was tired of having her whole life consumed with worrying about me - to the point where she couldn't even be herself. Probably a good reason to divorce someone, but I've been forced to accept and love myself with the knowledge that I have "failed" first myself, and then other key family members, because I couldn't provide for them. Let alone, the idea that I'm not "crushing it" at life! It's a hard thing to live with in a society that places a price tag on the value of everything and everyone. But I also feel down deep that that is all bs, and I am just as much a quality person as anyone, regardless of my w2's! After all, this is the same society that treats homeless people like garbage, and when they walk by them, acts like they don't even exist!! I'm still fighting to some degree, but I am very tired of having to beg for my subsistence. And now that I have my Social Security, I pick and choose which jobs I do to make ends meet, realizing that the simpler a lifestyle I lead, and the less "stuff" I acquire, the less dependent I have to be on others to employ me. But in general, I have given up on the standard 9-5 ever working for me, as it never has. That's why this video so appealed to me.

I used to think there was something wrong with me for not being ambitious. Now I realise that ambition is causing you to project your mind in to the future when the best place to be is in the present moment. In fact, it's the only thing that exists!

You have a partner and a dog that's a lot! I've lost my ambitions at 33, could no longer compete for a raise or a better job, try being best at everything. Now I live a slow life taking care of pets and my husband, I paint I play instruments and take long walks in nature, society's standards don't apply to me. I hardly go out shopping other than for groceries, I think it's a waste or time. I wish everyone can slow down and realise the best things in life don't require you put yourself in overdrive ❤

You couldn't have said it any better! Your words resonated alot with me. I also lost my career ambitions 5 years ago at 40. I used to be a really ambitious career driven woman with jobs that everyone envied. At 40 , i lost my business & my entire life savings, chronic pain & illness overtook my life. Now I am a full time house & pet sitter. I have a chronic health condition that gives me daily pain so i don't have the capacity to get a job, despite having multiple university degrees and a coveted resume. I am single, no partner nor children. I am working through my unresolved trauma, trapped in my mind and body. Friends and family are not that supportive of my "alternative lifestyle", asking me when am i going to come back to reality and resume my life & career. To be honest, i don't have the drive anymore nor the capacity at the moment. Thesedays i am happy when i have a pain-free, drama-free mundane day, with a nice meal, walk in nature and netflix.

@@heal2311 oh how I'm hoping you get through the pain, I only realised when you mentioned about your health that my societally imposed ambitions left me after I had a tumor, I've got some autoimmune issues going on post trauma, it was a bit of a wake up call. This makes so much sense to me now, thank you for sharing your story, I hope you find a good bunch of friends who will understand your choices and how you live your life, I admit, not many people around me are supportive but that's ok, I always think it's better to sit and enjoy nature and pets than have a forced conversation with someone who can't or doesn't want to see how trapped they are in the daily hustle the world around us expects. I’ve grown up around people who are so obsessed with working overtime and making money and buying the latest gadgets that it makes me despise these things…the best things in life are free and out there….you can find happiness out there without lots of money…we just need to slow down and enjoy life….our mental health is most important

Im 39 and a debilitating health crisis forced me into this path 3 years ago.. my life has changed for the better.. I doubled down on the value system I believe I always had, but that I was suppressing .. i have a chronic condition and am still transitioning trying to figure out how to navigate the harsh realities of this. I’m excited however to design my life and my path around what brings joy and allows me to be fully present and enjoy the richness of life - nature, stillness, feeding my curiosities with adventure, romantic love.. my injury broke me down to my core and now I’m building me back up and leaving all the trash behind.. it’s freeing and I’m so grateful 🙏🏽

I “dropped out” right after 911. I was 35 and single without children. I sold my house in the city and most of my belongings and set out by myself to make a new life. My friend asked, “are you gonna get a job and find a house?” I replied that I was going to find a place, and make a new life, and that’s exactly what I did. I moved to the middle of nowhere all by myself, but with my dog. My dad called it voluntary simplicity which I think just helped him explain me to his peers, but I joke I’m a classic underachiever. I live a simple life but have time for my friends and interests. No regrets here. I respect this slow and thoughtful existence. Thank you for this lovely video. Why would this be a description of an "underachiever". Ambition is little more than the drive to reach a goal, your goal was to find your own place outside of typical society and you seem to have managed just that. The societal norm of what 'ambition' is is more than skewed. Don't sell yourself short, seems like you're doing a lot better than most in terms of acceptance, being content and probably even happiness.

Judging by the wealth demonstrated in this video I would venture to say that many of your material ambitions have _already_ been realized and you are satisfied not in a world free of possessions, but with a relative opulent lifestyle that is your current environment. "Success" is a relevant term as it generally involves things beyond the most essential elements of existence and you've certainly achieved that.

While it laughably pretends to be about the self effacing retreat from vanity and materialism by an enlightened and humbled every man, it bellows at the top of its lungs: "Look at me! Look at my wonderful place and things! Don't I have a great life! Aren't I special!" Paul Fussell defined "bad" as something palpably unpleasant (like vanity) and "capital bad" as when that bad thing is presented as something good or great. Most vanity videos are merely bad. This one is capital BAD.

A few days ago, one of my best friends passed away. He was only 31 years old, just a year older than me. He succumbed to lung cancer after a brief struggle. At the time of his passing, I was traveling through Thailand, and just before I left, he shared this devastating news with me. Little did I know, it would be the last time I'd see him before my trip. After that, we never had the chance to meet again. His death profoundly impacted me, reminding me of the brevity of life. It's a stark reminder that we shouldn't live as if we're immortal. None of us knows what tomorrow holds, so it's essential to cherish every moment and live life to the fullest. . Do what you love and don't overthink everything too much. My goal is also to reach a digital nomad lifestyle, so I can make a life in Thailand, because Germany doesn't make me happy anymore

You did that! Well said, all the way around. I retired at 41 from the Army, everyone wanted me to go and get a job. I was like the point, when I was 14yrs old, was to be retired after my 20 years in the Army. When in the Army, I had to get up before the sun was up and really never got to enjoy Beautiful Morning Sunrises, unless on the weekends. There were too many days, over the 20+ years, that I just wanted to sit and enjoy the birds and not have any concern for my duties. I got that at 41 and have not let others influence me to get back into the rat race. Much Love to you and yours.

I love it!! I am a very spiritual person and my ex wife wanted it all. She told me 'I am the world's most boring person.' I am not, just not super career and money motivated. We are all heading to a box in the ground and a spiritual forever I believe, not interested in temporary gains. Looks like these folks in the video made theirs and then got out.

I wish I had known this as a young mother. I too am an introvert, I like to stay home, I liked raising children, but I always felt tremendous guilt for not being out in the world, not earning a living and not contributing to society. Constantly kicking yourself for things you are good at that society doesn't value is a losing game. I realize now that although we didn't have much , I could have pared down my wants a little more and still have been content. My kids would have still been well cared for . I could have been an example of peace, contentment and wisdom, instead of a frustrated person who worried entirely too much about what people thought.

You can have the ambition and work you ass off to be the best pediatrician possible! This philosophy seems very self-centered and complacent to me: it gives work and efforts the worst motivations possible, to better justify avoiding them. How convenient! That state of mind limits the human spirit to only work to service of our physical needs. How sad!

This is exactly the route that I took. I retired at 52 when society expected to see me productive until the age of 67 y.o. I decided to heal myself from so much fear and desires that society and families imposed on me. I wanted to be no one, to find my real identity and not the one dictated by a career. I discover little by little that what I really are is love, and the idea of lacking it made me a slave.

Hi, erm, as per my pinned comment to the video cos of all the misconceptions, just to clarify, yes I was a lawyer 12 years ago, yes I made a lot once upon a time, but I also spent a lot n when I walked away from the job, I actually didn’t have significant savings, cos back then I didn’t understand the value and importance of money. The bulk of our passive income was created and set up in the 4+ years before we retired in 2021, from our business together in Vietnam.

I am 28 also. I live on my own, am single & financially stable. I enjoy the simple things… eating good food, walks in nature, and having a calm, happy home. I’ve been afraid that in my next relationship, someone will see me as “not ambitious” as well, or “too boring.” …. But that’s not the case, even if someone else were to believe that. People just find joy in different things and that’s okay. Maybe you 2 weren’t compatible but that doesn’t mean you are any less worthy, and it doesn’t mean you aren’t a great match for someone else :)

I started to feel exactly the same way around 40/41 and didn't have the courage to admit it or explore the "no ambition" life style. Throughout my life, I've been asked "well don't you want more" in some form or other. As though my mere existing, paying my own bills, taking care of my self, keeping to myself was some kind of crime against nature. I'll be 50 this year and decided to devote however many years that I have left to being my authentic self, only nurturing healthy, loving relationships even if those are few. Disconnecting from people that hurt me in the name of love/family, not chasing down the high visibility job. I love that this video crossed my feed because I'd been wondering if I was crazy for "lacking ambition" or just wanting to live a quiet but happy, fulfilled life. Thank you for sharing your journey and this message because so many of us needed this confirmation✨️💕🙏🏽

Right there with you, I was early 40s when I realized that the hustle life was never going to be for me, despite so many around me bragging about how much they worked and how exhausted they were all the time. Now when my peers go on about climbing the ladder or buying a new sports car, I reply that my ambitions are to minimize stress and stay physically/emotionally fit. I'm early 50s now, and working a low level warehouse job that lets me walk around all day, drive a forklift and leave the job behind after 8 hours. I'm not quite able to retire yet, but aiming for 60 Life is so much better when you live it authentically.

@Recneps27 I love this so much for you! Same, I'm aiming to retire at 60 as well but to also live a low stress, happy healthy life until I can retire fully. That hustle mentality almost killed me in my 20s and 30s and to add injury to insult, not only did I feel crazy for not being able to maintain it, others echoed that sentiment. I couldn't agree more. This idea that happiness comes from having material things or achieving things that everybody considers important is so wrong. Happiness comes from analyzing what really is important to us. I was always first in class at school and my school friends always thought I would be "super successful in life". I'm 33 years old now. I don't have my own house yet (I do want to have one someday, but at this point I'm valuing my freedom to experience living in different places), I don't have a car, I don't have children, I am a self-employed English teacher, and I live a simple life. I feel that my friends feel sorry for me because I don't have what they think that means to be successful in life. But I have what really is important to me: I have a job I love, I work only 5 hours a day and 4 days a week, I have plenty of free time to study what I like, read, travel, cook, and spend time with my loved ones, and I make enough money to pay my bills and save for my retirement. I couldn't be happier.

It's taken over 12 years, and I can't claim all the credit. Providence has been so kind as to reward all our risk taking and hard work... I'm very fortunate to have started from a fairly privileged position in life - few debts, no dependents... and the universe also sent me my husband to share my dreams and my burdens. If you'd asked me at 29 (when I quit my job) what I thought my life would be at 38 (when we retired), I never would have imagined even anything remotely akin to our reality now. So for everyone out there who shares similar dreams to V & I, I just want to encourage you to tune out the external noise, listen to your internal voice and follow your own compass. Take it one step at a time, and you might be there sooner than you realise. I just wanted to share my thoughts on this. Thanks for watching :)

I really have tears in my eyes now were I‘ve watched your video. You‘ve really said what I feel deep inside and what no other person around me seems to understand. In a few months I‘ve realizing one of my biggest dreams and made a year abroad, and I realize more and more, that I want to live a simple life were I can spend a lot of my time in nature and that moments like this really fill my soul. I freaking loved this video, my daughter became ill and I was laid off, this happened in 2016 and since then I have desired to manifest one thing, full freedom to do what I want without the need of a job, or selling my time for my survival, I do have time freedom but the financial freedom hasn't arrived yet, Im certain it will, and I aspire to simply thrive, on my terms. Your views aren't amazing apart from one or 2 videos It seems you may have got the influx from the 1% secret AI tool video that did very well. Singaporean here... At the age of 40, I share the same sentiments. I no longer strive for wealth, prestige and career advancement... Grown tired of the rat race and decided to settle on a part-time job in order to spend more time with loved ones. I also have time to exercise and take care of myself. I was just too unhappy with the fast paced, cutthroat environment that I was working in. Hopefully I can eventually move to a place with plenty of nature like where you are now.

I quit my legal career back at age 29 and then drifted thru years of part time/free lance gigs across many different places travelling - it was a radically different paradigm but it suited my nature much better and i was so much happier than in corporate. I'm lucky my path eventually led me to my life today. I'm sure you're on the path to your own happiness as well. All the best 🌻

I have left Singapore because of the rat race. I used to pay 14k/ month rent in Singapore, I worked so hard to pay for a very expensive lifestyle there and I wasn't happy. I left to live by the beach with lots of nature and smiley faces around me. I get to do yoga and walk on the beach and meet interesting people everyday which I didn't have time to do when I was living in Singapore. Family and friends might think I have no ambition and they think I'm crazy leaving behind a great paying job but now I live for myself and I do want what I want, not following the social nom. Thanks for the great video.

Thank you so much for this! I've been struggling so much about what I "should" be doing, and the stress from the prospects is overwhelming and, most days, I shut down. You helped me realize just how good things are, and that they're more than enough to be happy with. I live in a community I love, a short bike ride from my favorite beach, with my dog. I work part time, and it covers plenty of every day enjoyment. I'm not "rich" but I have very little debt, no kids, or significant other, and my bills are very low. I have health, and a wonderful little dog. Thanks to you, I'm able to officially admit/announce... At 46, I'm (semi) retired. (Could go full retirement if I wanted to live painfully frugal, or move to a super low cost of living area, kinda hard to find near water, which makes me very happy.)

I moved to Bali from Jakarta two years ago, and for the first time.. I felt peace and contentment. I learned to live with less, and yet I feel more fulfilled and content than I have ever been. It dawned upon me that I have lived most of my life worrying how others would perceive me, and that I haven't been living fully for myself or my loved ones. It's liberating to finally have my priorities straight.
