This was the beginning of what has turned into an amazing life for me! I have been to places that I never though I'd go to include Hawaii and Japan. I have owned the vehicles I want and done all thing things I would like to do. I live in a 2,400 sq ft. house with a home gym and a pool. My family has everything they could ever want and more. Originally those were the things I joined for a material things. However, I have stayed in the Marines as long as I have because the outstanding individuals that I have had the pleasure of working with. Those people are now considered my family. They have laughed with me, cried with me, and helped me develop into the person I am today. Without the Marines I don't think I would have met such quality individuals. The crazy thing is; I thing people get scared about the military for the most part for the exact reasons I did. Watching way too many Hollywood movies and bad information from friends and family. If you have ever considered joining the military or you are looking for a great stepping stone you should do yourself the favor and go talk to a recruiter. It could change your life! I know because it changed mine.

Enjoyed your video and story! I had a crazy story too! I’m currently a correctional officer in my state and Being a marine was always a dream of mine. One night after work I came home and spoke with my fiancé about enlisting and she was 100% on board with me. That next morning I woke up with a number calling me, asking if I want to become a marine. Now here I am leaving to bootcamp in 5 weeks.

Wanted to share a story, I was inspired by USMC Lt Col Oliver North when I was in high school. I knew I wanted to go to college and get a degree and so had an academic scholarship free ride to a state school. My dream was to go to USMC PLC and become a Marine Officer. I was found ineligible as I had amblyopia in my left eye, and it only corrected to 20/30, even with glasses. I could be an enlisted Marine but not a Marine Officer. I even remember as an 18-19 year old thinking that maybe I could “memorize” the eye chart and get in (childish thoughts). Well in 1990 the Americans with Disabilities Act passed, and I thought maybe I can get a waiver. No dice, so I pursued a career in another part of the government that also was action oriented. But that was definitely my dream from age of 14 until early 20s, but it wasn’t to be and I still got a great pension at age 51, but didn’t get to be a USMC officer.

Sir, thank you so much for your story and the reason why you joined the Marine Corps!! For me I want to join the Marines that’s why I started in the Young Marines for about 2 years and this program benefited me through learning leadership, discipline, and learning to help our veterans. Learning more about the Marine Corps and the values of the Military. Now I graduated high school and I am going into community college for 2 years then gonna transfer to a university to join ROTC to lead Marines. Because I can’t join the Marines because I am currently getting braces so I need to finish my braces treatment to join after.

Jean Yi those are all wonderful reasons to become a Marine! Who knows, maybe you’ll have enough college by the time you get your braces off to become an officer in the Marines.
