Going through the collection of 40+ years, condensed down to only the best sounding pressings, and the only my favorite lp's of any group that I like, also those gems from the early 70's that you may not know about.

I wasn't really collecting when this video came out! When I was a teenager in the eary/mid 80s, and I had my share of records, but I didn't have good equipment then! When I (really heard) what records sound like on modified equipment, I was blown away! My jaw dropped! That was in may 2017, and I started buying records nearly nonstop! Over the years I learned differences in SQ in different pressings! I'm hooked for good, and will never go back to sub par sound!😁

When CD’s were first sold in the UK in the mid ‘80’s I invested in a player for about £200 and I thought the sound of CD was much better that my vinyl collection.Then I realised that I had been playing my records on a £50 turntable bought a few years before .! If I had spent £200 on a turntable instead it would have wiped the floor with the same price CD player ...

Thank you for your kind words, yes the Japanese pressings sound superior especially the first edition to almost all others. if you watch some others parts in this series I explain what I think is the very best sounding pressing available today for the lp's that I have it, might be the new reissue or Japanese or?

Finally someone addressing all these idiots on KZfaq who have to show off all the worthless crap that they found for 25 cents at a yard sale. I don't have a huge record collection that takes up my whole house but very record I own I listen to because I happen to love music. I have records not because I think that they are better than CDs but because that's the way I grew up listening to music and never stopped, My sound system is over 40 years old and it still sounds great...

I enjoyed this video series quite a lot. Gotta say though that I love the crinkle of the outer sleezes! Something I can't explain. It's like listening to your grandfathers voice. Really soothing. I have a different taste in music than this fellow, but we have a few overlaps. I'm not so much into great recordings or great singers or musicians. They are nice, but what is more important is how the music moves me, its' emotional content. Does it make you feel something? An old Robert Nighthawk record moves me way more than a perfect Boston or Steely Dan record, but I have room to listen and appreciate those kinds of records too. Very enjoyable videos.

I guess I'm somewhat of an audiophile myself! When I hear top quality audio reproduction, I just get pleasantly zoned out! It's really a great feeling, almost like meditating! Any person into high fidelity audio knows what I'm talking about! I will give a little slack if I really love an album and it doesn't sound up to par! But I have to really love the material to play a bad sounding pressing, otherwise NOPE!

Question for you Ron: when you see brand new reissues in the store that say something like "sourced from the original analog tapes," (Sundaze records does that) does that mean they went directly from the analog tape to cut a new master and make new stampers, (no digital in between the tape and the new vinyl) or did they digitize the source tape then convert it back to analog? Wouldn't that make a difference in the sound?

Love your philosophy on collecting! I also share your disappointment with some of the MOFI releases. Remember Nautilus? They were excellent! Another thing is that I'm so enamored by the machine that the phonograph is- a machine! Sound comes out! What a marvelous thing! And this also leads to some of the selections I've collected. Sometimes I consider myself a librarian or archivist (even though on a very modest scale). One of my passions is "oddballs" as well, and monumentally awful records such as Lou Reed's "Metal Machine Music." Not that I play that one at all. I also have "Mrs. Miller's Greatest Hits" because she reminds me of how my mom sang... Over the past year I've been following your philosophy more and more- looking only for the prime examples of the records I remember and love. My Japanese "Presence" by Led Zeppelin can't be beat, and I've been a hound for the remastered reissues, too: "Script of the Bridge" by the Chameleons is my latest. At the beginning I recognize a few of the spines of some of the records I have. Thanks for plugging the B52's!

Well, I am a skeptic in regards to Your Pitch Perfect hearing. I have quite a bit of hearing loss but enjoy Music more than most People and love both my cd and Lp Collection. About 750 titles of both vinyl and CDs. I love vinyl but in a different way than cds. Vinyl is a home only thing. I take very care of my vinyl so they stay home and in great condition..always. Cds I try to take care of as well but I bring them out and People are always commenting on them. Saying stuff like, wow, why CDs now. and then they laugh, and sometimes they point. Cds sound great. A little harsher on the ear than vinyl but they have a purpose and they sound better than mp3.

aquavitvibes72 sorry if I gave the impression that I have perfect anything far from it. My point was that better sound is important to me and thats why I chose vinyl over digital sound. like you I prefer listening to records I also have a CD recorder that I use to record my records for the car and to share with others. CD is better than mp3 but when you are by yourself on the go those tunes on my phone sound pretty good :)

God day, I really enjoyed your video. I must say that I agree that vinyl is about the sound quality. I hate people who say they enjoy the crackle, and people who buy the cheap "mastered from digital" LP´s. I myself have a mid end setup with a Pro-ject rpm 1.3 with a Ortofon m2 Bronze (upgraded from the stock m2 Red) and B&W 685 S2 speakers and a denon pma 720ae amplefier. I use VAN DEN HUL The MAGNUM HYBRID cables and I also updadet the Coax cable from the turntable into the amplifier. The thing is that I wish that I cud afford something better but at the age of 21 it is hard to make ends meat in the first place, and then I also have to import all my LP´s (because I am from Norway) Looking forward to the day I can have a settup as you have to enjoy my records on. Best regards from Norway.

@RocknRonni
@RocknRonni 9 жыл бұрын
when you start collecting anything its because you like that certain widget and you have a few, you get some more and so on after some years you have quite a few. At this point most folks then decide what they want to specialize in. I am picky fussy sort of record person so I decided I wanted quality over quantity. I did not start out to collect records I like music and back in the day thats how you bought music on records. Well I also like good sound the two go together. When ever I was asked years ago what kind of records I had, I always replied premo stuff minty import type. One fellow told me all record collectors always think their records are in better condition then they really are. I thought yes that probably true of most people but not me, I am to fussy to buy scratched up records But you know he was correct. So over the last couple of years I have sold off lots of records that I did not listen to. I had them because they were collectible and used the money to replace any records that I do like to listen too, with the best sounding one available in the best condition. I can pull any record out now it will be a record that I like and in near mint condition. I still have a few of the really rare records that I would like to replace but only a very few now. this is is kinda my journey hope it helps you understand the record collecting thing from my perspective. thanks for you feedback really appreciate you comments Best regards Ron

The memory is not as good as it once was, the group is The Three Suns. The Three Suns was an American instrumental pop group, popular in the 1940s and 1950s. The albums I have is Movin' 'N' Groovin' (RCA Victor LPM/LSP-2532, 1962) and Warm and Tender (RCA Victor LPM/LSP-2617, 1962) Both in stereo. Their last album was This Is The Three Suns (RCA Victor VPS-6075, 1971) I found them at a Salvation Army thrift store in Great Falls, MT for $1 each in mint condition, Both great examples of the talent of the guys in NYC RCA studio A .

Hi, I had the same gift given to me when I was really young. I fell in love with the sound of musical instruments and vocals on vinyl record and the radio, starting in the mid 1960's when I was 5 years old. I remember the Beatles Penny Lane and Neil Diamond Sweet Caroline a little later, and so on. I have a few LP's in the region of 100, but half of them are 180g New pressings of my favourite sounds. I have most of the Pink Floyd, and my favourite band at the moment is Wishbone Ash. The question is with regard to what you mentioned about LP's of non-mainstream prog rock type which are awesome. I want to know of more bands from the seventies which are on par with Wishbone Ash and Pink Floyd, or Rush, Bowie,. Something which take you on a journey or a story type of LP. My turntable is of high quality with MC cart and RB300 arm class A amps Tannoy speakers. Bliss.

@ Acidhouse house I am troubled by dudes like you. It's clear this guy is cool. He is not being malicious in his comment at all. As an older kat, I know exactly what he is talking about and he is not being mean he is just expressing his confusion. I am at odds with almost everything in modern society, culture, entertainment ect... And even a lot of todays youth say the same and look to the past for fashion, entertainment ect... So unless the person speaking is popping off arrogantly or carrying themselves in a way that you know they are just being a jerk, take others opinions with a grain of salt. I disagreed with a lot of this dudes musical taste but I can tell he is speaking from his passion of how his music makes him feel and not trying to insult anyone. Chill internet.. chill.

Its all cool Mr Stairway to HEAVY! i understand where mr. Acidhouse is coming from the more I get feedback from the VC the more I realize how much opinion/musical taste are the same thing. What I hear as noise is anothers music and vice versa. Thanks for understanding my point. I realized i may get a little negitage response to the way i injected a little humor in my statement of disbelief as to what was so awesome that it changed his life. I also need to learn something it may not be a great musical experience but something else about the record that changed him. I know from talking to him on youtube he is a cool guy. We just have really different taste in music .Its been my experience in my life that when I find a record I think is really good most folks agree with me that it is really good. So thats what shocked me about the experience. When he said how great the album was it was like lost treasure that i had not discovered, and when i dug it up all I found was, well not treasure to me. I had a fellow tell me a while back that comparing different pressing to find the best sounding pressing was a complete waste of time. and of course that is true for him. I tried to have a civil exchange of ideas with him but he resorted to abuse, so i just ended up banning him and deleting his comments. The point is we all have our own opinion but its nice to share them and get positive responses and when we get a different response we should not view it as negative, then hopefully then we can learn and grow from the shared experience.

well I bought these speakers in 1993 just after i won some money in Vegas and after about 15 years 1 side stopped working might be when the kids were younger and I did not have the listening room yet My eldest threw a paper air plain and hit the speaker putting a small puncture mark in the speaker it worked good for about another 5 years, but anyway the screens are kinda like a light bulb they do burn out after a while. Martin Logan is really good about the replacement screens I think replacement screens per pair were under $500 and they sound like new and yes great! really good value. Problem is you need a really good high power amp to drive them. My old power amp was 100 RMS per side again before the dedicated room my youngest at the time about 3 got a chair so he could reach the volume pined the volume and smoked the amp the Logans ate the amp for lunch. Also you need a larger room, they are really fussy about placement, and do not sound great at low volumes

@helgar791 10 жыл бұрын
Ron Beaudry We're both a couple of lucky puppies. I love your collection. Do you buy mostly new or used records? The Spin Clean is good, but do yourself a favor. If a chunk of money comes your way the Okki Nokki is a nice vacuum machine as is my old machine, the VPI 16.5. Also with vacuum machines a mixture of 3 parts distilled water, 1 part 90% alcohol, 2 or 3 drops Photoflo per gallon is a good formula. Clean each side and rinse with distilled water. Lightly scrub each side before vacuuming with the supplied VPI brush. The VPI's disadvantage is that the bottom may slowly desiccate over time. If a big chunk of money comes your way nothing beats an ultrasonic cleaner.

Wow really cool recipe for cleaning fluid thanks very much I will most definitely be trying it next go around. Did i mention I wash with the spin clean but vacuum with the disc doctor V. I really notice a real improvement in sound Quality after vacuuming. thanks for your feedback and suggestions.

I was at Hi-FI show in Jacksonville Florida a few years ago. Peter Ledermann of Soundsmith was there demonstrating his strain Gage cartridge system. This guy is a guru when it comes to re tipping and building high-end cartridges. So he obviously knows good sound. Peter was using a Linda Rondstad LP for demonstration purposes, when Peter finished playing the track the lady seated next to me turned and said who knew? Meaning wow, great song Great Sound. I have been meaning to get one of those records ever sinse.

Nice video Ron, except to the best of my knowledge Philips is a Dutch company. Maybe they also have a Japanese division? Dunno. Anyway, Dutch Philips is a huge company, often called the Sony of Europe. Known for manufacture of all kinds of electric and electronic equipment, including stereo gear and also had their own label for a long time, mostly classical as far as I know. Not sure if the record label is still in operation. Also, they co-invented with Sony the Compact Disc. Listening to the Audience album now on YT to see if I like it.

you have an awesome setup! I must say sound comes first. I'm somewhat new(reborn ) to vinyl and the vinyl community. I I see at record stores they sell a lot of used records priced by the quality of the cover and/or gatefold sometimes as opposed to the condition of the vinyl itself. So to me it ALL boils down to the sound. I mean there could be a mint condition blonde on Blonde album for $50 yet say there is the same record but a little beat up as far as the cover and linear notes for $35. I'm buying the $35 record any day of the week as long as the condition of the record in itself is the same. Is it just me or are a lot of record stores more focused on the condition of the packaging then the actual vinyl itself ?

As much as I like vinyl, for new (digitally recorded / produced) music they are kind of impractical. If I made a song, I could release the 'lossless' digital version on my Bandcamp at no cost to me whereas a pressing of vinyl would cost a lot and because it was produced on a computer, you'd only have digital quality anyway. But a lot of small productions in the 1980's and 90's only ever came out on vinyl. Hence my collection of obscurities from Italy. My conclusion: Digitally produced music is better on digital format Analogue stuff sounds better on vinyl / reel tape.

The guy who spoke about the record that changed his life, the record that you think is awful has a different taste in music to you. You come across as being a bit arrogant and judgemental. Personally i think some of the records you showed in this video are really bland and unimaginitive but i wouldn`t think you were stupid for liking them. If you`re such a music enthusiast then surely you understand we all have different tastes, we don`t all like what you like.

Wow, people have different tastes in music? I used this experience that I had to illustrate my point. I said I didn't understand why this was such a great record to him, not when it had autotuned singing on it. I know my taste in music must be bland to those who like Autotuned singing but my point was there is so much great music out there with great singing on it and its not a secret what great singing is, everyone knows a great singer when they hear one.they know great music and musicianship skills when they hear them. Sorry if I offended you, but I thought it was kind of funny. Realize when we have and opinion it is a judgement of sorts, and I was sharing my opinion, thanks for sharing yours.

Ron Beaudry The reason why it is such a great record to him is because he liked it. His taste is different to yours. You mention great singing and great musicianship. Just because a song features a good vocalist and good musicians doesn`t mean their resulting music is any good. I`m not trying to annoy you, i think it`s cool you upload videos talking about music. I just think you`re missing the point a bit when you find it so hard to understand someone likes something you don`t like. Cheers.

lizichell2 Agree.People gravitate towards vinyl now because of the way cds are mastered now.I think cd was the better format in the 90s only because they were mastered the way vinyl is.I do love vinyl myself but there is still inner groove distortion and static and crackles and pops you have to deal with unless you are very rich and can buy a 50k table.Still love the magic and the romance that music can be invented from a piece of plastic and a needle.And covers that you can read.Just wondering if record companies did this on purpose as vinyl probably makes more money for them or am I paranoid?I think cds would be way easier to manufacture so I guess I am wrong and maybe why vinyl now is more expensive than cds so the greedy record companies make their money back?I think 60 db dynamic range is made for rock music.Stops the terrible distorted over compressed cds we hear now.If you do that with vinyl,the needle would jump lol.

+michael Tobin Some folks are only complaining about the recent influx of digital records now being produced by the older record companies. Some are ok most sound like bad cd. If we want digital we will just buy the cd, its a lot cheaper. We don't want digital records. They have no idea why we prefer records in the first place thinking a digital record we be ok. 20 years ago when the big record companies got out of producing records to chase the big profits in cd, small audiophile labels came into being and were able to get the original master tapes from the big record companies, because they believed records were dead. No one was still purchasing them in any numbers to be able to make a profit so the small guy could still get the tapes and they made reissues from scratch. They were again Analogue mastered from the tape to modern standards and some truly fantastic reissues were being produced. Now the people with the tapes want to make their own records but are making them to a low standard to maximize profits.

Bang for the buck, digital will sound better than vinyl, and is far easier to set-up. But if you do vinyl correctly, then, with the correct pressings, vinyl wins. Note that first pressings do not necessarily translate to the best pressings. Just because it is a first pressing does not mean that a copy of the master tape was used. A copy of a copy of a copy could have been used. Or, the studio decided to compress the sound quality, or to equalize it (over process it). Then, on a later release, they did a better job. Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs: For the most part, their pressings are not good. They occasionally get it right. But I am done rolling the dice with them, and wasting hard earned $$. Japanese pressings? I have never heard what I would consider to be a hot stamper. They always sound off, or transistory. Today's new pressings? They usually play quietly. But they are also dull and lifeless. Unless a reputable person recommends a new pressing, I stay away. There are probably exceptions to all of the above. But enough purchases have provided a pattern for me to avoid those sources. Also, no two pressings sound the same. In fact, if side "A" sounds amazing, that means zero about how side "B" will sound. Visually looking at a record, no matter how shiny and clean it is, means zilch in determining how good it will sound. The only way to know how a record will sound is when the stylus meets the grooves. Knowing which stamper codes have been confirmed as having great sound, and which stamper codes are known to never have great sound, can save you $$ in seeking out an album. But even if you know that stamper code X for album Y can sound great, all it means is that, when you purchase that album, you have a far better shot at obtaining a great sounding pressing. But even with the right stamper codes, it is still a game of luck. And every album has different stamper codes, and the codes vary from side to side. So this is no easy task. You must have a decent turntable, tone-arm, cartridge, and phono amp, and must have it all professionally dialed in (proper stylus pressure, anti-skating, vertical tracking alignment, overhang, and azimuth), in order to truly reveal the magic in the grooves. In terms of sound quality, I estimate that: -- 90% of pressings are between poor to okay. -- 8% are very good. -- 1% - 2% are fantastic. They are gems (but only on 1 side -- you need to find yet another gem for the other side). Lastly, pressings from the days of analog master tapes, have the best chance of having amazing sound quality. If your turntable is properly set-up, you will know when you have one of those gem pressings, because it does not sound like a great recording. Rather, it sounds like the band is there!
@lizichell2
@lizichell2 3 жыл бұрын
I agree. Most new pressings just sound like cds
@NoEgg4u
@NoEgg4u 3 жыл бұрын
@@lizichell2 That is likely due to the performance never being recorded on reel-to-reel tape. Rather, the performance was recorded digitally. There is something unholy about taking a live (analog) performance, splitting it up into 0s and 1s, and then reversing the processes to create a new analog waveform for the pressing. The studios do this because it is easier, and therefore more cost effective, for them to record and edit the digital master. And the only reason that they release it on vinyl is because they know that there are some people that will buy the vinyl, because those people do not realize that they are being duped -- and there are some people that just like to have the 12" jacket, etc. Today, the studios care very little about preserving the live (and that includes the performers that are in the studio -- they are, of course, alive)... they care very little, if at all, about preserving the pure and natural sound of the singers and the instruments. The studios do not hesitate to run the recording into one box after another, adding reverb, compression, equalization, double-voicing, autotune, etc. And every single box degrades the once pure signal, and that degradation is cumulative. We have children, in adult bodies, making love to their studio equipment. They cannot get enough from every lever, every knob, and every mouse click. The actual live (studio) performance gets lost, and the mixing / mastering engineers do not even realize the damage that they are causing. Most of them are not qualified to hold their jobs. Just because you drive a Ferrari, and you know every knob and button in your Ferrari, does not make you Mario Andretti. And so it is with the people that operate the equipment in the studios. Cheers!

Ron Beaudry But the digital file is converted to sound before it is stored on the vinyl, conventional styluses read the soundwave that is stored and not some digital information. The reason the those records that you mention sound ok is maybe that the digital master had a large resolution, maybe very close to the analogue one.
@RocknRonni
@RocknRonni 8 жыл бұрын
yes of course the digital file has to be remastered analogue but in hi fi its all about the source. be it your cartridge turntable phono pre these things determine what sound you get. when you take a digital file as your source it can never sound better than that. if you use the original master tape as your source and remaster that with great skill like the kind of records that quality records makes now you have something very special sounding. why some sound better than others has many factors but your original question was is a digital sourced record digital? the answer is yes even a cd has to be converted to analogue for you to hear it so is a cd digital? its basically the same question. if you take a analogue tape remaster it digital make a cd is it analogue or digital?
