The first door you showed needed to go to the right because the gap was 1/4". How did the door move to the right when you added the shims? Wouldn't shims move the door to the left? I'm lost.

That's a fair question. Your instinct is correct. If I simply shim the whole hinge, it would push the door away from the jamb. However, by shimming half of the hinge, I can push the door in either direction. I have another video here that explains it more clearly. Thanks for watching. Watched this video and then went to your linked video with this in more detail .. yea, doesn't work. Tried the shim on both sides as mentioned and either way pushed the door closer to the wall. Tried on the door side and same result.

Sometimes neither works and the answer is in reshaping, re mortising or rehanging the door. With doors, as in any type of carpentry, often one solution or non-solution leads to another. I have many videos on troubleshooting doors and there are only so many things that can go wrong, so the answer is in there somewhere.
