I firmly believe sign language should be taught at a young age in all schools. society would be a lot more inclusive/accessible to deaf/hoh people and also it would just be really cool and useful to be able to communicate without talking sometimes! And I'm a hearing person !!

My parents were deaf and it was always interesting to see people's reaction when they would communicate. My mother read lips and seldom used sign, whereas my father could not read lips and relied solely on sign. My mother's sister was also deaf (my aunt), and she read lips and never used sign. My mother could speak clearly and almost everyone just thought she was a foreigner speaking. My father and my aunt could not pronounce words correctly and it was obvious that they were deaf. One of many topics for the deaf community that I never really see anyone discuss, is the manner in which people sign. Growing up I would notice deaf people from New York would sign in a manner I would call hard and forceful, and deaf people from California always seemed to have a laid back, easy going manner of signing. A product of their environment I guess.

I'm autistic of normal hearing. I put a lot of effort in my communication, so people regularly comment how "good" my social skills are. It's a lot of work... And often leads to people not believing I'm autistic at all. So I get your struggles at least on some level. I mean... They miss my meltdowns because I've learned that melting down in public is worse than melting down in a toilet stall. :'D Thank you for this fascinating video

I was a sign language interpreter for many years and have watched several of your videos. It was not until I watched this video that I learned you are deaf. It's impressive how hard you have worked to keep your enunciation so clear. It could not have been easy. Thank you for sharing not only about deafness but also EDS and other disabilities. Your work is greatly appreciated by me and many others.

Oh my goodness, you have definitely done the work! My daughter was adopted at age 6;she is profoundly deaf along with other challenges. She had no language at all, so our entire family learned together. We kept a sign language book on the kitchen table. We all wore it out! I love sign language because it is a beautiful language that adds nuances that words alone cannot capture.

I worked, for a while, in a long term care facility for psych patients. One of our residents was profoundly deaf since birth. He could read lips and sign (ALS). Because of his mental illness, he heard voices. I always wondered how that worked. He couldn’t hear anything but the loudest of noise ( the smoke alarm in his room was set to lights & vibrating, plus extremely loud siren to accommodate for his deafness) but he would describe the voices in his head to be almost whispering. I know he wasn’t “hearing “ with his ears, but his schizophrenic brain. I always thought it was interesting

I went to a public in a small town in illinois and we were required to learn sign language in second grade. I very much appreciate it and I'm sure others do too.

I am hard of hearing and was bullied constantly through school because people didn’t believe me even though my class knew I had two operations on my ears and went for regular hospital appointments. Despite this every year I moved to a new form teacher the teacher would be completely unaware of my hearing issues because the school never told them and any new students would immediately assume I was faking. Like you I am not sure why I would do this. I didn’t get a hearing aid until I was 21 and so spent my entire life hard of hearing and can’t get used to the loudness of the world. I really do need to get an appointment for a hearing check because my hearing is definitely getting worse. Boo. On top of this I have fibromyalgia and ME which obviously I am faking because “you don’t look disabled” like we are all created from one disabled person mould. So at 35, I now flatly tell people they are being rude as I have zero fucks left for ignorance. I do love your videos because you explain deafness in such a lovely and understandable way. Despite this being filmed aaaages ago I assume people still say the same daft things.

The crazy thing to me is how she’s able to so easily convey emotion, sassiness, and adjust volume with the voice that she can’t hear. Muscle memory is a hell of a thing I guess.

Oh my goodness!!!! I can relate! I lost all my hearing 2 years ago almost overnight and people have actually said "You can talk, you are not deaf". For real, I've heard that over and over. Society can be so messed up.

Gosh, being autistic myself and getting the "but you don't look autistic", I can feel how it's frustrating. Thank you for teaching us what it's like for you. I find this fascinating learning how people who have disabilities learn to navigate their world. I once worked with a blind man and I was forever asking him questions as I was so incredibly curious. I am very thankful there are people like you and him who are willing to communicate with me to help my understanding. (I was a teenager and very naive. Asking questions and having it positively responded to has been wonderful. Please don't stop.) Also, for the millionth time you do have a very lovely speaking voice that is so pleasant to the ear. Your persistence has paid off. (Not that I need to tell you... But wow my mind is blown about learning this new piece of information.)

My niece is deaf. She was born with maniers disease and we didn't find out till she was 2. She talks like a hearing person she lip reads and also signs. She just got her masters in special education majoring in deaf education. She is my super hero and I love her so much. She has overcome so many things hearing people take for granted. She is also a dancer of ballet and modern dance.

About her working on her voice ..... totally get it .... 18 years of speech therapy as I am "legally deaf" and wear some high powered hearing aids to live in the hearing world. As for her voice ... it is very clear and succinct and a pleasure to listen too. This is the first video to stumble upon and I look forward to watching the others.

My wife lost her hearing at 13. So she can speak and sounds fairly normal. I think many have misconceptions because of society and film. But there’s many different types of deaf people out there.

My parents are deaf immigrants from two different countries. So, you can imagine what a mess my sign language skills are! It leads to a lot of confusion. I'm so happy to see someone talking about this. 😊

I'm in the same boat as you, born profoundly deaf but raised alongside hearing children. But I don't know sign language apart from the alphabet. Like you I don't sound deaf, audiologists have always told me that my speech is amazing. You are a beautiful person with a beautiful soul and I wish you and your wife all the happiness.

I feel this on so many levels. I have schizoaffective disorder, and I can seem pretty neural typical to people who dont know me. Sometimes even to people that do. It's a blessing and a curse very similar to how you described your deafness. Many people don't even believe me when I tell them because I don't look like a violent, narcissistic Hollywood portrayal

I’m born deaf. I couldn’t hear anything or speak till I was 15. When I got my cochlear implant. I still can’t hear clearly. I can only understand people with Australian accent and it’s so weird you are the first British person I ever understood 😂. Even auto generated subtitles understood clearly.

Your voice is so great to be able to listen to! The clarity is great for me who can hear but has difficulty understanding what people are saying without reading their lips and essentially translating it out in my head again.
