In this video I explain the differences between Gateron Ink Black V1 and Gateron Ink Black V2 linear switches and why I only use V1. THEY HAVE THE SAME SOUND. ONE IS JUST SCRATCHIER. I also go over some tips as to how you can improve V2s and some other worthy alternatives.

A word of advice for most: this is one of those things that you won't actually notice, but will if you convince yourself the difference is material. I have both v1 and v2, maybe my ears are bad, but blind testing and there's really no difference especially when lubed. Ultimately, welcome to the keyboard hobby where we nitpick everything because the amount of variation is so low.

@SHAGGY OW oh nah not like cream stems; creams get their signature sound because of the extended pole length, getting the pole to bottom out rather than the legs and rail bottoms. JWICK stems will still have rail bottom/leg bottom out, so they won't have that same "clack" as creams. In terms of price it's only like an extra $10-11 dollars, and should alleviate the inconsistent smoothness issue while also maintaining a deep sound (or at least that's the theory haha).
@scorppu
@scorppu 3 жыл бұрын
You've mentioned before that uhmwpe stems on ink v1s aren't worth it coz ink v1s were already smooth enough and they were too expensive. From your experience, do you think swapping v2 stems for uhmwpe stems are worth it and can they attain the smoothness of ink v1s?
@AndyVNguyen

You get smoothness but you lose some of the ink black sound. Also uhmwpe stems have been inconsistent too. You’ll need v1 uhmwpe from invyr

V2 springs are perfectly fine if you lube them properly. I’ve used about 300 of these version two switches and I find them pretty smooth to be honest. Certainly much smoother than most other linear switches I have tried recently. Applying a thin coat of 205 grade 0 also makes them even smoother and you’re really nitpicking if you feel that these aren’t smooth. Ink v2 switches have been praised in the community for ever, often for their smoothness. Suddenly coming out and saying they aren’t smooth seems a bit weird

the v2 leaves aren't that tight, as you can see in the clip in the video. when lubed, you hear 0 friction on gateron ink v1s. same with the smooth v2s. if you can't really hear scratch/friction, i wouldn't worry about it

For those of you who have V2s and have some money to spare, get some 415 rev4 UHMWPE stems. They are perfect on V2s: Less wobble, sooo much smoother, and sounds way better.
@AndyVNguyen
@AndyVNguyen 3 жыл бұрын
I personally do not like what UHMWPE stems do to the sound of switches. It mutes the upstroke sound which is a lot of the character.

Andy I think you have the best opinion in the keyboard hobby. Your taste, your analysis and your constructive take on every enthusiast level keyboard product is unmatched by anyone on the scene. I truly mean it. But my biggest problem with these recorded videos is that you talk too fast that it makes me anxious to watch. I am only writing this because your opinion is the only one I care about but it’s becoming unwatchable at times because you just speak so rapidly that it doesn’t make it enjoyable to watch. Only telling you because I care and hopefully this point of criticism doesn’t offend you because it’s in light of being constructive than obstructive.

@gavin758
@gavin758 3 жыл бұрын
@@AndyVNguyen optical, hall effect, et cetera. They're supposed to be the pinnacle of smoothness. Not even any metal contacts for the slider to rub against. Disadvantage is that they really only come in pre-built keyboards.
@noahhyun3172
@noahhyun3172 3 жыл бұрын
@@gavin758 I've tried some optical switches, and the smoothness is quite unbelievable throughout the press. However, the sound isn't very good in my opinion; the sound is very high pitched, and there is a weird crunch during the top-out of the press (on the switches that I've tried). And, you wouldn't really be able to swap switches unless you switch with other optical switches; there aren't many options when it comes to switching optical switches (especially compared to regular cherry-style mechanical switches).
