If you're someone like me that doesn't bullet journal, how do you keep track of ur daily tasks? Let me know! :D p.s: I didn’t think I would have to reiterate this, but please don’t think I’m bashing on bullet journaling! It’s honestly such a great hobby and I personally still watch a lot of bullet journal videos cuz they’re so interesting! This video was made as a reminder to anyone that might feel overwhelmed with maintaining one, or may just not vibe with it as much as they thought they would! Thats simply all! For me it turned out to be an artistic outlet. I started bullet journaling because I could never find a planner I was fully happy with. When I started, I thought I was just going to have a very simple and minimalistic journal but I was surprised by how much I enjoyed decorating it. I wouldn't say I'm an artist but I enjoy creating from time to time and always wished I created more art but never had the inspiration. So for me, decorating my bullet journal works wonders for that. I dont see it as useless time. It makes me happy and is sort of meditating. But at the same time I see why people get pressured into making their journals cute and super decorated. In the end it's a tool for you to get more productive so you should do what works for you!

-Pika Girl- for me it depends on the time of the year, during school I’m very busy while during summer break (now) I have nothing to do... so I change my bullet journal based on that and usually just have a monthly overview along with some space for dailies if I know I’ll be doing something that day plus a habit tracker to make sure I take my meds (plus birth control and vitamins), to track when I shower so that I don’t shower too often or not often enough (yes I’ve gone a week without showering before without realizing it had been a week before I started my bujo and I’ve had days where I would shower 5 days in a row because I couldn’t remember when the last time I showered was... summer vacation messes my internal clock up), to make sure I’ve called my great grandma (she’s almost 90 and very lonely during these times, so I try to make sure I video call her everyday) and to make sure I eat proper meals since I forget to eat during summer vacation as well

If you're busy don't even think of bullet journaling. Get a a normal planner and decorate it when you have free time if you want to make it cute or personal. I'm a student so my summers are basically free. I use this time to add some stickers and colors to my planner for all year long. When school starts I dont worry about decorating and just get stuff done while still having a cute planner.

I think most people just started forgetting the whole purpose of bullet journaling and that's why are hating on it... it's sad though because when Ryder Carroll created the system, it was literally made to make lie easier, not making you overwhelmed with 500 supplies! If you like making it funky and/or artistic, it's supposed to be your choice! It was supposed to be MEANT TO WORK FOR YOU!
@ShikamaruAzumi
@ShikamaruAzumi 4 жыл бұрын
I just want to point out that the original creator of the bullet journal system, Ryder, never used doodles or habit trackers or full on water color paintings. It was just a place to write down tasks that need to be done in a way that helps you not forget. Don’t feel like you NEED to decorate a bullet journal or keep track of how many times you floss if it’s not something that works for you. I’d recommend checking out the original video explaining how the system works. In that video, it’s strictly hand written notes, no doodles or anything. However, in the end, it’s your choice if you want to bullet journal or not. There’s no pressure to do anything you don’t want to do or if it doesn’t work for you. I just feel like the bullet journal community has gotten so obsessed with decorations and sketching that the original purpose has been lost.

The original creator explained very clearly that your bullet journal can be ANYTHING : a diary , scketchbook , planner , study notes etc. The biggest mistake in having a bullet journal is to feel pressured to doodle or paint or use washi tape , stickers and making it perfect while the point is making it FUNCTIONAL - what works for you. You're not creating or desinging your bullet journal for the instagram or pinterest or another human being but you! Plan what / how / when you feel to and what you need. If you want insta bujo and that works for you then it's fine , if you want minimal planning that's fine as well , the major point is that both of these options ARE a bullet journal ! Don't feel like you need a cute planner! Don't feel like you need tha fanciest notebook , pens and markers! Don't feel like you're making it for a stupid picture! Don't feel like others have to like it! It is your time , your life , your personality on the paper and your freacking business! You do what works for you , but that doesn't mean an artistic or aestetic spread or painting in your journal makes it anything but a bullet journal! Same with the plain version! It's your choice and the way you plan is unique because you are unique and your bujo is beautiful so are you!💚

I think it's important to remember, too, that the people that post their bullet journal spreads to hundreds of thousands of subscribers on youtube are... literally just doing their job. They're doing it for their living, and they get to carve out a big chunk of time to do it because they're making subsistence-level wages off of it. You not having the time/energy to bullet journal isn't your fault, it's the nature of your living situation (and also the fetishization of productivity that is an inherent factor of late-stage capitalism... but we won't get into that).

Y’know, the thing that’s frustrating to me is the fact that it feels like the whole bullet journaling community has become so focused around aesthetic that they’ve forgotten what the whole point of a bullet journal *is*. If people want to do artsy stuff, that’s fine! But it has lead to anyone new to bullet journaling feeling pressure to perform, when instead it’s simply meant to be a tool to help you organize your thoughts. I have ADHD. Regular planners don’t *work* for me. They’re too restricting, and they never have what I need. I have to write down *everything* because if I don’t, I’ll forget, or it simply won’t get done because of failed to turn a fleeting thought into something concrete enough for me to actually do something with. Planners simply don’t have enough space to hold all of those notes-when I used one in the past, the margins were so full of random notes that it was nearly impossible to get any use out of those notes at all. If I use a separate notebook for these notes, a consistent system becomes harder to maintain because my attention is split and things often fall through the cracks. With a bullet journal, I don’t have those problems, because I can design it to suit my needs, and make notes anywhere I please in no particular order, because I have an index to refer to if I need to remember where I wrote down that grocery list from last week. There isn’t really a point to this. It’s just frustrating that something that was designed by a person with ADHD to work with *his* brain has become a trend based around aesthetics that has lead many ADHDers, myself included, away from the core guiding principles of the bullet journal and away from a tool that could turn out to be invaluable for organizing their messy thoughts because the fluff and details made it impractical to use on a day-to-day basis as soon as they lost interest in it. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with decorating your bullet journal, but I wish there was more information out there that actually focused on practical usage rather than aesthetics, because it prevents a lot of people from getting any use out of it in the first place. In any case, a bullet journal isn’t for everyone. But I would argue that if it doesn’t work for you, than it wasn’t meant for you. But I think a lot of times people’s issues with bullet journals stem from issues with the aesthetic-based culture surrounding it rather than any issue with the system itself, which is an important distinction not a lot of people make. (PS, if you don’t want people to think you’re bashing bullet journaling, titling your video “why i hate bullet journaling.” probably isn’t doing you any favors ;p )
@ImJem
@ImJem 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for sharing your perspective and own experiences with bullet journaling! Just like how I was in the video! See, and that’s the thing about the current situation around the bullet journal. It was created with the right intentions and for practical usage like you’ve mentioned! I’m sure there’s lots of people out there that like to use it that way. However, like a lot of things, original concepts and ideas sometimes alter along the way due to current social media trends and so on. Focusing on aesthetics isnt necessarily bad, because that was what originally got a lot of people interested in the activity! Yes, a lot of people aren’t utilizing the method like they’re supposed to, but they find a lot of fun in the artistic value of it. And yes it may be impractical, but if they can handle it then it’s not an issue if they enjoy it. I do apologize for not including further research in the video, but this video wasn’t focused on exploring the history of the bullet journal. It was a video meant to explain my own personal history with it, along with my own misconceptions and opinions about it. However, I do stand by my title because I did state in the video that I hated bullet journaling. I never said it was a terrible activity, but rather something I just personally don’t do well with. Anyways, thank you for taking the time to explain your side and reasons, and for typing out these paragraphs! It’s always nice to hear someone else’s personal stories and opinions.

Some people feel good siting at the table and drawing so she draws and decorate journals. Maybe it cures anxiety or something. For example I call my journal not Bu Jo but simply "Time management center". That means it has bussiness feeling and my purpose is to do things, not to sit and write. I bought a very expensive journal, got pens, and highlighters. I force myself to do this because i knew I was wasteful and spent way above my budget to make it somewhat decent. Seeing this make me realize that I’m not the only one that got in this trap. Instead of helping me with anxiety, it just makes me angry and anxious because of the unrealistic expectations.

Imma just copy my comment from another reply, but your experience is so relevant!! I swear it's this artificial pressure where you _technically_ don't need to have an aesthetic bujo, but it might as well be the expectation because that's all anyone thinks about when they hear "bullet journal" 🤦‍♀️ I saw a friend show her bujo to someone and they deadass said "that's just a to-do list and some dates" lmao. The pressure in the community, and thus the public eye, _is_ there, regardless of whether it's formally announced or not, which is why so many like myself are put off by it (as well as because wasting pages is stressful ahahah)

I loved hearing about your experiences with the bullet journaling system! It was very insightful and I was so surprised to see my video there haha. I completely relate to your sentiment towards bullet journaling. In fact I completely stopped using one last year because I just didn’t feel like it anymore. That’s why it was so important for me this time around to get the message across that I’m doing bullet journaling for me and not for Pinterest or social media. This time my spreads are actually functional and serve a purpose for me. I feel like a lot of people forget about the functionality aspect of a bullet journal, focusing more on the aesthetic aspect of it.

I feel like so many people dont understand that bullet journaling isn't meant to just be aesthetically pleasing and to be a to do list. I started doing it because I'm not great at just straight up drawing, but bullet journaling is helping me get better at drawing and whatnot, while also motivating me to do things that I wouldn't have done regularly before. It's a great way to track things like your mental health, and physical health, etc. Anyways, have a good day :)

I do, however, definitely agree that to beginners the "expectations" are pretty daunting, and so it does take some time to develop what works for you.

I think you should read "The Bullet Journal method", or watch the original clip of Ryder himself. It's simple and straightforward. The Bullet Journal in my eyes is "do what ever WORKS for YOU". For example, i'm using the monthly spread, but ignore the monthly list+ full month tracker. I refer to use a weekly tracker instead because it keeps me on track. The Bujo is a tool to plan and organize time to do what i want, so if it sucked my time, then it's time to change the system in my bujo ( and i changed it so many time that i couldnt count =)) )

I quickly learned that doing the "traditional" bullet journal set up was not going to work for me. Things I didn't really care for (ie, a habit tracker) were so deeply integrated but other things that were my top priority were difficult to integrate into the existing set up. I use a bullet journal every day, and am now on my third year. I have never decorated a page or used washi tape or anything. I just draw out squares for things and the main thing is filling the squares in. I think people need to remember that any decoration is entirely at your discretion and is not necessary for the process to work.

I love bullet journaling but *only in my own way.* I have never been able to find a type of agenda or planner that works for me, so when I discovered this new method, it literally opened my eyes. *I perfectly understand the pressure of having to keep precise and artistic,* I also went there at the beginning, but then I realized *I only needed it to be practical!* I love this method because I can change the spreads whenever I want, (I don't do all of it at once, but month after month) and experiment with new things. I have room for all the trackers and lists that I want and *I draw them with an absurd simplicity* , so it doesn't take me more than a few minutes. Like everything, bullet journaling isn't for everyone and that's alright! The most important thing is that our organization method is helpful and not stressful!

This was exactly what I went through when I started bullet journaling a few years ago. It was legit fun decorating it at first but I ended up not finishing my spreads so I stopped. Then there'll come a time I'd get the feeling to start a new journal again because I didn't want the look of the last one anymore, either so messy or not 'aesthetic' enough. I wasted a lot of notebooks. Then I realized why not just go back to using a ready made planner, and I did and it made my life a whole lot easier. I'm really amazed at people who can do their journal spreads everyday or month. Well, I guess I'm just too lazy to make these spreads all the time.

Personally, I love bullet journaling -- I used to make my own planners out of blank notebooks before it was even a thing -- not so much for the functionality because I don't have many things to keep track of, and even if I did I would forget to write them down anyway, but because it works as a creative outlet for me. I hardly post pictures online too, I just try to make it pretty to fulfill myself and literally mesh together something functional and my habit of doodling everywhere.

I am an artist too (BA in painting) and due to depression and anxiety haven't touched a brush in about 5 years. I decided to get into journaling but I HATE the idea o bullet journaling. I run my own business and to do lists and trackers are a must, but honestly they give me anxiety. I don't want to track anything in my spare time, in my personal Journal. I don't want to create these expectations for myself and them to feel pressured by the Bullet journal to make progress on those items... and to feel like shit if I don't. So I bought a big art sketchbook A4 and without lines, and I just go with the flow. Sometimes I just write, like you would write in a Diary. Other times I feel like writing down quotes, or making artsy spreads. Sketching out a still life. Writing down a quote. Without any annoying guidelines or prompts, no tasks to check off the list.

I'm a professional artist too (Concept Artist), but I prefer to make my planners minimalistic. I already have sketchbooks for my sketches and paintings, and I don't want another one lol. When I had an artsy Bujo, it distracted me from the important stuff. It becomes a beautiful thing to look at, but not to interact with. I need to have those two worlds separated. Maybe it's just my ADHD tho- the simplest thing it's the best for me

I don’t really like bullet journaling as a planner or tracking tool cause fvck that I can just do that stuff on my Apple calendar and notes app or other apps. It’s much more fun to just make random spreads like movies I want to watch, things I want to buy, pros n cons, goals, random thoughts/ideas etc that I can just do when I feel like journaling rather than having a timeline to have to stick to. Idk it just hits differently and is a creative outlet without pressure, plus you can still make pretty spreads. Honestly can’t imagine having to stick to a monthly or weekly spread and doing like 10 trackers at once 😖 respect to the people who can stick to that

One I bought it for my teaching work, it's not so much for my tasks because I'm not used to writing tasks and needing a notebook to reminding me of what I have to do because I do remember it; but what bujo is actually helping me for is to keep all of the information of my classes and students in one place. Before bujo I had like 3 different notebook, note pads, etc and I couldn't find anything, but now I force myself to put it all in my bullet journal and it's been kinda working specially now with online classes. I have been forcing myself to not do any work on weekends so I can "rest", so I use my (still quarantine) weekends to decorate my bullet journal and I love it, it's so therapeutic for me. In January I will begin using the other one as a personal bullet journal. At first I saw a lot of ideas, like trackers and daily tasks but I know me and I know it won't work for me, so I have decided that I will use that one as an scrapbook bullet journal only. I will put whatever it crosses my mind, whatever I want, no rules no nothing. It will be my relaxing therapy for the (hopefully better year) 2021.

I like making my own planner bc I find that the cheap ones at the store aren’t to my liking. But I don’t do any fancy doodle, I only add what I need, which is calendars to keep track of school work and other activities, AND a spending tracker bc I’m in college and I need to be really careful with my money. Habit trackers seem like a good idea but I know I won’t keep up with it. I think bullet journaling can be good if you tailor it to what YOU need. As opposed to what you see on studyblr.

I have a love-hate relationship with writing and have never once finished a journal I started... However, Bullet journaling is the method I’ve been the most consistent with ever. For me the habit of bullet journaling was a compounding experience. I spent a year with a lined pocket notebook doing *just* daily logs, then began doing yearly/monthly logs in January of this year. Inspired by Shayda Campbell’s simple black-and-White aesthetic I decided to try a similar approach and primarily used just one pen, with white pens to “artistically” fix big errors. Haven’t worried about drawing or anything of the like, and just focus on short entries every day to log important memories or tasks. I am a huge procrastinator and it’s legitimately helped me be more organized and more timely in getting tasks done. Reading Ryder Carroll’s book helped lower the barrier for entry as well- painting a picture of how simple and fluid the Bujo method is meant to be. He talks about starting with one tool, and building from there. I was finally able to let myself breath and just experiment with different things knowing it didn’t have to be perfect. This comment is a bit jumbled, but if anyone’s been considering BuJo and is a bit deterred because of the video, please let me reassure you that it’s a more useful tool than you think if used properly! Don’t get caught up in the small details, and just experiment with different things. :)

when i first started bullet journaling it was more stressful than anything, since it took a lot of time but i still wasn’t happy with how my journal looked and i could never complete all of my tasks. now, i treat it more like a diary and if i’m not happy with how some pages look, it’s fine. i really love it now, since bullet journaling went from a something stressful i felt pressured to do, to just chilling while writing, doodling and listening to lo-fi

I was gifted a bullet journal for Christmas and I've really enjoyed it thus far - but that's only happened because I just decided early on that I wasn't going to worry about having a super decorative book. I use it functionally with a bit more of a minimalist aesthetic and it's worked really well. Before, I had notes and tasks and things written in a million different places and could never remember where I'd written anything. For me personally, it's been really nice to have everything centralized in one place. But I also understand that everyone has different preferences and whatnot for staying organized and documenting their days. Different strokes for different folks!

I felt EXACTLY the same way you did. At first, I loved the idea of bujoing. I've always been someone who loves to draw + stay organized so I thought this was IT. I started out with a kpop bujo and incorporated some habit trackers into my ban.do agenda because I knew the daily bujo spreads you most often see would've been too much for me. However, I soon realized that I couldn't even keep up with doing spreads for my kpop bujo + the trackers I had due to my busy schedule. It was fun at first and it gave me a creative outlet but I often found myself stressing over them and would push back on working on it since I didn't have to do it every day. I even tried doing an art journal at the beginning of last year (draw something everyday sort of thing) but it ended up making me feel burnt out and not want to draw. Part of me still wants to get back into it, but it's definitely something I know I personally can't handle. I do applaud the people who can make those weekly spreads and such consistently though! I still do use ban.do agendas for my personal/school needs (I'm on my 3rd one! 10/10 would recommend to a friend~) + make fitness and period trackers though, which is what I CAN handle :) Thank you for sharing your thoughts ❤

I really don't get why people feel so pressured with making their bullet journals pretty?? Do it if you want but if it isn't your thing then why??? I decorate when I have time and I feel creative but I don't and never felt the "pressure" to make it pretty.

I started bullet journalling with the basics alongside some pop of color and simple doodles. As months went on, the themes became elaborate and time consuming to the point where I was spending more time decorating the planner instead of planning and organizing my life with it. It also took away time from my main art and I barely practiced because by the time I was done, I was exhausted. I hated it. This year, I decided to go back to simple b&w spreads and with no doodles at all. So far it's been working. I'm able to do more main art and practice and actually used it to plan. It's also easy to set-up. I ordered a blank journal late to the year and it arrived Jan 2 but I was able to all my yearly spreads and January in one night which is nice.

I think you focused a lot on the spreads and you don’t have to do habit trackers or anything else like that. You can only do the daily logs and you can keep it basic and don’t have to do a lot of fancy things to make a good bullet journal.

My advice after three years of bullet journaling: Keep it simple! No colors, no pictures, no stickers, no lines drawn with a ruler. Don‘t spend too much time on ornaments. Just use it for your thoughts, ideas and tasks. That‘s what it‘s made for.

I actually love keeping track of my tasks electronically. Using good notes on my iPad allows me to not only have an organized to-do list, however, also great notes. All super easy to use and still looking cute and simplistic.

This was honestly a really great video. I've never actually seen your channel before so I had no clue what to expect, but as someone who's repeatedly wholeheartedly /failed/ at bullet journalling multiple times (and mine weren't as neat as yours at the beginning, let alone by the time I accepted I'd abandoned the habit again!), this was a really refreshing take. I'm off to see what your regular content is like, but have subscribed based on this one already.

i love bullet journaling, a lot of the time it is really stressful and sometimes i end up skipping months, but now i have three bullet journals from 2017-2019 and it's so much fun looking back on the journal entries i made, my terrible calligraphy, book reviews from books i hated and me defending my bad studying habits being able to look back through a physical book, containing your entire year is the one thing that keeps me inspired to bujo. i wanna be 80 and be able to fondly look back on my youth, the stuff i liked i was obsessed with (twiceeee) etc. with 74 a5 journals lol

I also don’t like to waste time designing a bullet journal. I’ve chosen a regular dated planner which designs is very close to my daily needs. When I need something different, I use some blank space and it works perfectly. I also try to keep it simple, just use black pen and sometimes a highlighter. I feel that helps me to focus in what’s is really important and if I feel in a mood I do some doodling and decor but that isn’t my aim.

I also had that stage of trying to do everything (habit trackers and all that) and making it beautiful. But now, after a year and 4 months of doing it, I know what I like. My bujo has practically 0 doodles or cute lettering, it is much more basic in terms of what I actually write (mostly a little summary of my day and what I need to do). For me, bullet journaling is great. I’ve made it a habit, and I think it helps my life tremendously

The problem with bullet journaling is that it's gone from being its own distinct mix of planning and journaling with a unique bullet system of dividing tasks and notes into types, into just being a personalized planner.

Bullet journaling is just basically for helping u to keep track of things, it doesn’t matter if it need looks cute or not, but if u love doodling it’s ur own opinion to put it down onto ur journal. And for habit tracker etc. it doesn’t mean that u need to fill up every single day, when u skip some day, in my opinion, it’s fine. It just helps u to keep everything organized. I’ve been journaling for almost 2 years, and I’ve been in love with it✨ no hates JOURNALING HELPS U ORGANIZE UR DAY AND KEEP TRACK ON WHAT TO DO, NO NEED TO BE STRESSFUL TO MAKE IT LOOK CUTE AND IF U HAVE NO SKILLZ ON MAKINH IT LOOKS CUTE NO OFFENSE, JUST STOP JOURNALING! Coz for those ppl who love doing it, it’s kinda offensive.

I started out bullet journaling two years ago. I did it for about 6 months and my pages just started getting simpler and simpler until I just stopped picking it up completely. Then I started happy planning and I got tired of lugging my planner and supplies around everywhere. Now I digital plan with the GoodNotes 5 App, I’ve been doing this since September ‘19 and I’m really enjoying it. Very easy and I can do it from my phone or iPad with no problem.

I personally have more of a traditional journal where I simply write about my day, occasionally adding stickers of pictures as slight embellishment, but more so focusing on just writing out my thoughts and feelings about the day. There are sometimes when I get very busy and do not have the time to dedicate to my journal, but I usually use a sticky note to hash out the main parts of that day and then later go back and write it out as if I was recounting that day. Sometimes I would make lists of things I planned on doing, but just going over what I had already done for the day helped me know and remember what I needed to do next.

I totally understand this video. I went to the same phase where I didn’t have enough time to make it aesthetically pleasing. Now I solved the problem by decided to keep it very minimal and pleasing to look at, that way i won’t end up spending a lot of time on making it and still being able to using my personal tailored planning elements such as habit tracker, where regular planners doesn’t Include, instead of buying a planner from a store.

It's this artificial pressure where you _technically_ don't need to have an aesthetic bujo, but it might as well be the expectation because that's all anyone thinks about when they hear "bullet journal" 🤦‍♀️ I saw a friend show her bujo to someone and they deadass said "that's just a to-do list and some dates" lmao. The pressure in the community, and thus the public eye, _is_ there, regardless of whether it's formally announced or not, which is why so many like myself are put off by it (as well as because wasting pages is stressful ahahah). The original vision and method by the creator isn't even that widely known because of all the bujo "inspo" and instagram pages flooded with what seems like a very simple concept - an aesthetic notebook planner - so nobody really feels that there's anything more to read on bullet journaling than just that. I think your comment definitely needs more recognition - it's a system of organisation where traditional planners don't cut it for certain people - and whose philosophy is far less shallow than social media makes it seem (as unintentional as I understand aesthetic bullet-journallers/ studygrams think their impact is).

If you are half and half on bullet journaling(you like the idea but you find it’s too much effort to make it like you see pictures of and you struggle to properly fill it out): Try the clever fox weekly planner (£19.99 on amazon). It’s pretty much a bullet journalthat is laid out for you. It has goals pages, vision board spread, a page to do mind maps, and then it has monthly and weekly spreads. It also has plain dotted pages at the best to do whatever on, and the best part is that it’s undated so you don’t have to worry about when you have to fill it in. You do it at your own pace.
