Three weeks into my first carpentry job, love your videos. Changed careers at 31 years old after 16 years of nothing but restaurant industry and hating ever day of it. Loving carpentry so far, it feels like much more rewarding work and I'm already learning a ton.

I cane to write that exact quote! Looks like I’m a year late but so very true, I’ve been learning carpentry and it’s been a struggle to hold a “skillsaw straight” like Scott said but seeing how great he is now and that he struggled really settles me and makes me more hopeful! Cheers Scott!

Loved this video. I also started out in construction with zero experience. Started on the ground floor with a broom in my hand and finished the job on the 28th floor on a swing scaffold as a framer. It’s a little sad how that type of work has been been looked down upon for years in the US. If you didn’t get your degree in a field that led you to a desk job, you were failing. But who’s happier? Love how effortless and calm you make everything look in your process. Thanks for sharing.

Great video Scott. Great to see your back story. I too became a builder because my old man was one and he too pushed me into it and just like you hated it until I learnt what I was doing. Now after 34 years in the trade I have so many skills. My son decided to be chippie as well, he qualified late last year and we work together doing remodeling in Hamilton. Keep up the good work.

Watching the footage from the fish market bring back memories. I worked on the site since the start putting support I beams into the old crapy building that latter was transformed into what it is today. Moved out of NZ in 2007, so its nice to watch these...

I kept turning up to a building job, I then looked at people working in offices here in Auckland City getting paid 3 times what I was on. I then said "I'm a mug standing outside in the blazing sun earning eff all" . I then became one of the peeps in an office , I havent looked back either

As a 14yo kid in the 70's, my dad was an electrical contractor and used to take me to work with him on building sites on the weekends and holidays. He used to pimp me out helping the other trades. I kind of hated it at the time - it was so hot and dusty - especially on high rise projects where it always seemed to be the.middle.of summer (in Sydney) working on the top decks preparing for concrete pours (i.e. absolutely no shade). I used to get $5 per day - until the union rep came sniffing around - and then dad gave me a pay rise! Looking back, it was a lot of fun and I learnt a lot about many different aspects of building. These days I am an electrical engineer - but it has made me very practically inclined and acutely conscious of the implications my decisions and designs will have on contractors. It is a shame that modern OH&S rules would now prohibit this type of activity.

This surely was different but enjoyable to see how you got started. I got my first start carrying roofing shingles up to the roof for my dad and his two brothers ( uncles ) to nail down. I got paid $.50 a bundle.

Hey Scott. I love the way that a carpenter in New Zealand is pretty much a house builder and a carpenter in England is! well, a carpenter. I love that you do these vids and show the rest of us your life. It like watching a biography of someone. I watch youtube more than I watch TV these days as I get to choose what I want to watch and who to watch. I'm still bummed that you didn't pick me for the router plate but I forgive you. Love the vids dude.

Carpenters are people that build houses with wood. In the UK they special in roofs but also install doors, windows and stairs. There are carpenters in the UK that do complete house building such as wooden houses. There are also carpenters in the UK that do green carpentry which means using fresh woold to do roofs and complete houses. By and large in the UK carpenters just do roofs.

Thank you so much for this video. I’m 28 years old and just started my apprenticeship in September. Right now I’m finding it very challenging and I often feel discouraged or I get in my head quite often with the mistakes that I make. I was 16 when I first started working on building sites. As a teaboy/labourer. In South London, England. I progressed to becoming a bricklayer. I'm now 52 and a tiler. I wasn't a very good bricklayer. But I am a very good tiler. I haven't always worked within the construction industry but having experience in the building industry enabled me to work in various different countries when I travelled, picking up techniques and skills along the way. In 2005 my partner and I emigrated to NZ. If I was 16 again would pick carpentry.

Scott I love your videos and your enthusiasm. I'm currently thinking of becoming a carpentry apprentice at 32 years old. I was going to start law school next fall but decided I don't want that debt this late in life and really don't want a desk job. My biggest concern with carpentry is that I'll have to spend a lot of time away from my wife and daughter for work, I live in the central valley of California, a lot of the work is up north where the billionaires are pushing out the millionaires.

Hi Scott. I'm into my 42nd year as a carpenter. The last 25 I've been self-employed. One of the last companies I worked for was a large commercial builder. One of the founders told me one day I did trim like he used to! Made my day. He also was quoted as saying, "If you're installing windows and after 5 you realize you're installing them wrong just install the rest the same way!". It was all about production. Your comments on changing 5 floors of lower wall details reminded me of Mr. Adam's comment all those years ago! Stay True my friend!

First week of my glazing apprenticeship, I cut my hands to pices, by year 3 I was teaching new apprentice's. We all have to start somewhere, but also that one trade person who takes the time to train you makes a huge difference

You’ll always remember your first. Mine was a 5 story apartment building with a underground parkade. learned alot about hard work as well as pooch screwing there. My dad is also a builder and got me that job, seems like alot of us start out like that.

My first carpenter job after I finished high school was at a hospital. I had gotten in to the carpenters union as an apprentice. I worked for the wrong company on the site for the first 2 hours of the day lol. I went on the site first thing and asked for the carpenter foreman. When I found him, he looked at me strangely, then said to me "I dont remember requesting an apprentice from the hall, but whatever go work with so and so" I was like cool. It wasn't till after 9 am that the shop stewart found and your not supposed to be here for the drywall/metal stud framing crew, your here for cabinet install crew. Once again I was like cool. That was July of 01.

Nice,Brilliant,haha!! I remember turning up to help build a luxury house in Milford here in Auckland when I was a Unitec carpentry student in 1994. Upon arrival I was overcome by the stench of raw sewer. Over the weekend the cross eyed boss had used a post hole borer and had hit a sewer line. As a result of this the basement of the house had flooded with raw sewerage.You could see turds everywhere. The boss wanted someone to dig up gully from the house to the road to scoot out all the raw sewer. As he was cross eyed I didnt know if he was looking at me or the bloke behind me, or someone across the road. . The boss kept on telling me how his apprentice has nail gunned his fingers together. I then made a quiet exit and went home for a nice cup of tea.It taught me a valuable lesson never trust a cross eyed builder !! . I then later read his company went bust as well , happy days indeed

Great tips for any one..it's normal to be green and nervous and unsure when starting something new. Therefore the first days weeks months can be daunting. It some point after sticking with and turning up every day on time it clicks

At least you made it past those hard years, I dropped out of building after 3 years as it wasn't really for me but mainly the 2006 financial downturn. Thinking about it I would of been in the same places as you working at the beach apartments next to Lambley centre and on a converted office site in Newmarket.

Nice one. We've been building the same amount of time and on similar type of work...and judging by your videos we're still doing similar lol. I enjoyed building when i first started, but 10 years later I was losing interest fast, then I chose to start my own business and all I can say is what a ride. Loving it!!!

Yup, know the feeling !! My first day, straight out of School, I was told to move a whole pallet of Plasterboard from one end of the site to the other end, which I did, on my own. When i had finished I happily told my tradesman that I was done & he said he had made a mistake and it all had to go back to where I got it from!!!!!!!!! Welcome "Johnny Boy" to "The Wonderful World of Carpentry" !!!! Here is me 37 years later........ Still being a Carpenter / Joiner !!!! Wullie Love was his name. Gem of a guy. Good times. :)
