Well just sounds like you need to hang out in different places.... When I go to certain places covered in dust and sweat I am treated with respect and friendship. But yes there are some places who would look down on me but really I am not at the point where I care anymore.

As a framer: I got into laying block, welding, installing shingles and metal roofing, siding, finish carpentry and tiling. Cons are relatives and in-laws wanting you to build them things and not paying for anything. I got an associates degree in applied sciences for welding- the rest I learned on the job but being a framer I can see what will work when drawing out plans beyond the wall and I use that for metal fabrication as well. Cons is it is an expensive adventure every time- I lost a wife because I'm always busy but remarried. Only the strong survive.

Its the greatest job ever. I’ve been one for 40+ years still fun every day. I’ve worked as a cowboy, fireman, lineman logger trucker crane operator equipment operator. But I always come back to carpentry

Before I started as a builder I use to look at tools and think how awesome it would be to own a tool box full of all these tools. Now that i own a toolbox as a builder my biggest con is having a toolbox full of tools in my boot every day.

The diverse and free exercise is a major plus. The social interaction and education you get to give to home owners is always fun too. You nailed pretty much everything else as well. Along with the con about too many tools, the amount of parts and adapters and options for tools and disposable things for tools you have to keep up on, and I do a lot of finish/drywall/painting as well so allll of those types of consumables you are constantly keeping inventory of. With that though its fun learning about new products, how products work and with material the chemical make up of things and how they function and react to stuff I've always taken an interest to and love sharing on.

What i like about my job as a carpenter is the never ending opportunities to learn and improve. One thing I don’t like is working outside in the summer here. Even the winter with freezing temperatures and rain aren’t as bad as how hot it gets. I can handle it good enough, but it costs a lot of energy... and my colleagues always complain too much about the weather, lol.

Pro. Gaining the skills to fix your own house. Change a entry door. Siding. Base and case Etc. Con. Having to come home after a 10-12 hour shift to change a door. Redo your siding. Etc.

Variety is a big thing i love about my job. Often times when a job runs on longer than a few weeks i find myself dreaming about it and it's nice to know that when a job is bothering you day and night you wont always be there.

Job satisfaction no 1 to me. Scott mentioned insurance, that's a big 1. Other trades on sites, arrr. I always clean up around where I work, unfortunately all to often other trades treat the job sites as a rubbish tip. Anyway Scotty hope the lasagne was tasty. I might start a YT channel called the tasty tradie as I can cook, even tho I have a wife who should be tending to those duties lol. Waiting now for angry replies.

Pros: Witty banter with coworkers Cons: Difficult to access sites, this makes the work and tool loading/unloading (especially very long projects) very tedious. Also rain.

I know it's sadistic, but as and ex tradey = I do get a solid laugh when you're out and about running errands and the look of sheer terror that washes over your face everytime you get back to your van and the alarm is going off. Then the relief when there is nothing wrong. Ah, the memories. In Aus its become far more common to build a fully custome trailer so you can store everything you have in one spot. Also means you can take your business anywhere but also detach it and leave it behind safely locked away when you do normal life stuff.

Hate Even More = Theiving c*nts always after those tools. Over the years have had 2 whole van loads and 2 whole house loads stripped (both a job site stripped of all powertools, tools, some appliances and a caged trailer outside and also a whole house we had staged for sale of furniture and fittings). Yes, here in NZ.

My favorite thing, having a clients house completely torn apart and they get a little worried, then putting back together better than new. And the freedom, cant put a price on the freedom it gives you.

Best thing is defiantly the variety of the work, work locations, indoor/outdoor environment and the people you meet along the way. customers, other trades building relationships with suppliers. Especially if you cover all aspects of carpentry. The downside is the fatigue when all your jobs land at once and they just have to be done no questions asked. Not enough hours in the day sometimes.

For me as a hvac tech, tight quarters when we have to replace a drain pan, just did one last week in kneewall, well 1 guy yanked the drain pan and 1 guy halfbent over trying to extend there arm all the way and hole a 40lbish a coil sideways and then you have to this in reverse

Yes indeed! You get good at "interviewing" and reading clients at the first meet. I have no hesitation doing a fast over-quote on jobs for this reason. My rule of thumb is "I never quote to win a job, I quote to not lose money."

Clients think quoting is a 2min job on a new build maybe yes, a renovation however there are endless hidden scenarios and although we builders can perform miracles with super human efforts we are mere mortals without XRay vision or the ability to time travel back in time to work out why or how something was built. Quality workmanship takes time and that starts at the quote.

Pros: - Feeling of accomplishment when building is completed - Stay in shape - Pay is okay when starting out - Cons: - Start really early and finish late. - Exposed to the weather - Not uncommon to work 6 days a week - Body breaks down over time - Pay is just enough to afford basic necessities and bills.

My uncle is a trained carpenter. When I started my apprenticeship (as a joiner) he told me the same thing (5:18) and that he never regretted practising it.

Pros: the work it self. Working with wood is just so much fun and really rewarding. Cons: the pay, the health hazard, the repetition, (once I had to sand Windows for 4 weeks straight. After that I quit and I am a wood engineer now) Still love do carpentry though

So many hazards! One time the fence on my boss’ table saw wasn’t perfectly straight making material bind. So of course I had to rip small blocks to fur out the original sill and when I ripped the block the waste shot up and ripped the tips of my fingers off lol

One of the things I don't like about carpentry is an occasional customer who is a cheapskate or simply doesn't have money but the job has to be done, so you are forced to do a subpar job which you know could've been done much nicer and is not going to last. And the second thing is painting ceilings.

Pro: Variety of tasks and projects, Challenging and thus satisfying to complete a challenge, Outlet for creativity, and the satisfaction at the end of the day from looking back and seeing what you created/accomplished. Cons: 2 1/4" flooring, So many damn tools and with that comes packing and unpacking them ev'ry day

Too many tools. Partly why I did another apprenticeship in Bricklaying, got sick of all the tools, wearing a tool belt, loading and unloading tools and materials. Now I do all sorts of work and have even more tools 🤪 Skills is correct Scott because when you have gained the craft skills from carpentry, tiling, bricklayer etc. you can use those skills to use in other trades and jobs. Cheers

What I don't like about the trades in general: > productivity being the only goal in some manager's eyes, and how dare you have a breather or have a yarn. gotta yell at the apprentice too, because apparently they should be working a trade quality, at trade speed, with apprentice wages. But not taking shortcuts > time is money mentality. Not only in the productivity mentioned above, but also when project managers try to hurry everybody along and get 5 trades to complete 2 weeks work in 4 days. Trying to work in an area full of other trades materials because they had to bring it on site too early to comply > architects seemingly having no practical experience and making nonsensical plans. Also plans that change but nobody tells you > health and safety policies that make no sense. Apparently its better for me to arch my back in a bad position because god forbid I take off my hard hat (even if I accept any risks that come with it). Of course, it might not have been needed had you scheduled more time when areas were more open and less cluttered, but what did I say above? Time is money, and H&S is more lip service to avoid fines than about any logical sense. Which is why the project manager thinks its acceptable to walk around without it taking photos of people without theirs. The last point was especially prominent during levels 2 and 3 of covid. Constantly wash hands, but gloves at all times? Can't be within 1 metre, but please complete this 2 man job in a small scissor lift, we don't want to extend the project.

That's cool that you can use a storage unit as a shop. Pretty sure that there are very few places like that in the US. Most would not have power in the first place. Others might have one outlet. But they don't want you there doing anything but drop off and pick up.

Great video as always. I'm a plumber so likes and dislikes are a little different. Likes: I love finishing a boiler room and getting the system up and running. Dislike: Telling a client we have to wait to get a part to get a system back up and running, (clearing a nasty kitchen clog is a close second here). What is the music on this vid?

Worst thing, if its cactus at the bottom, it'll be even more cactus at the top and youre left to deal with it. Best thing is overcoming above mentioned issue to have a well finished product.

As a qualified carpenter who left his job as soon as I was qualified because I wasn't enjoying it I'd say least favorite thing is money driven bosses and difficult tradesmen 90% of tradies will use you as a client in one form or another.So many cowboys.

Hi Scott I'm a joiner here in the uk but my firm want us doing the multi skilling which i don't mind but now they've got us cleaning shit of toilets when we finish a property haha
