I haven't done a hard boycott of gw, it's just that when I look for models I can usually find what I want somewhere else for cheaper. My budget is tight, and mostly playing miniature agnostic games means I can forego gw unless they put out something I really, really like.

"The Corporation is not your friend" is a great line and one that as a consumer is forgotten. The Corporation is their to provide an organization to manage the selling and finances of the provision of a product. Their goal is to get a consumer to buy more for the companies interests. That is why there is a marketing department to put a spin on what is going on behind the scenes. Ultimately its a matter of not relying on a Corporation to provide what you want in a hobby. Its setting up your hobby in a fashion that does not require the Corporation to make any specific moves.

Also, they use the term "consumer," which I've always felt implies a one-way relationship, as though we're passive. Customer implies they actually have to seek and win our custom.

@@peterclarke7240 So I would say that goes back to my comment on their Marketing department. That is the winning hearts and minds department to make the transaction palletable. Consumer or Customer or even End User it is the same. As individual it's your buying power that would shift a corporation not whether or not you are a customer. If you as an individual could buy out a store, take out investments or reduce a company's finances by offering an alternative product in the market you have power. An individual buying models has no power in the greater scheme on a corporation.

@@roryspickett9881 Wrong, as a consumer you can choose not to consume. Don't be fooled by the shiniest object. It may be Fool's Gold. Educate yourself and others that you, and they, are hobbyists. I've been invested in historical, sci-fi, and fantasy miniatures and games since 1973. The only GW product I found Valuable in the true sense was Adeptus Titanicus (and by association, Epic Space Marine). Nothing out there quite like it in 1989 I believe it was. Ranges made sense, it was quite a good game. But soon, the boxed sets got smaller, they started adding tomes, the box sets got even smaller, they introduced metals and imbalance, and killed it for me, at least. GW has been doing this for longer than I care to remember. As hobbyists we have a cornucopia of options, some of the products drastically less, and given your tastes, dare I say a better fit. Sizes from 6mm to 40mm with lots of choices. Folks do your research and question Value. People argue about paints all the time. Do the same with rulesets, size of battles, and representative troops. A very sensible and sober take. As consumers, we must beware of choosing sides and fighting the companies' battles for them. Games Workshop has enjoyed a hegemony over the hobby for nearly four decades now, but the tide is shifting. Their competitors are slowly but surely growing, and that is only a good thing for us hobbyists, because competition favors the consumer. There is no need for hobbyists to declare their allegiance, but instead they should enjoy the wealth of options at their fingertips, picking and choosing whatever games, models and supplies they find interesting, GW or otherwise. The label on the packaging doesn't actually mean anything, it's just marketing. It's the enjoyment at the table that matters.

I think that that and the fact you've been bringing up so many other companies (game-wise) is why they ask you. Many either having forgotten your hobby hero purpose of trying to help people get into the hobby... not GW. But you also recognize that GW is a major entry point. I appreciate that you let us know what you like and don't like about GW, their games, their paints and sculpts. I got into GW because I had heard of them as a non-tabletop gamer (of any type), had, luckily, good experiences at the GW stores I went to. But... after the last 2 years of getting into the hobby (your videos SERIOUSLY kept me motivated and in my right mind for it) and breaking out to try models from other companies... GW consistently puts out sculpts that grab my eye and I find fun to assemble, a few exceptions apply.

Add to that my rule that i dont buy new stuff until i finished a Bracket of my existing stuff, and that i only have one project at the time going ... i actually rarely buy anything exept paints that dry up because im a slow painter and dont often find time to do the painting. GW prices are high oh boy yes - and that comes from a swiss citizen with a ok salery (which puts me on a higher buying power relatively speeking than many others in the hobby) - but when i look at the pile of shame from many that complain about gw prices... i wonder if its GW to blame here or their unwillingness to restrain themselfs. GW is the reason I got into the hobby back in the late 90s. Mainly, it was the lore/background, then the miniatures, then the distant promise of actually learning the rules and playing a game one day (I still haven't played a full game, 20+ years later...). I think it's a smart move on your part to keep covering GW, and I really appreciate your honest opinions about their products. I think they're going to be increasingly challenged in the miniature marketplace going forward, though, with the meteoric rise of 3D printing. People simply aren't going to be willing to part with $50 (or more) for a unit of five models, when they can 3D print some very respectable alternatives for a fraction of the cost. If GW are to survive going forward (and I really hope they do) then they need to be more responsive to fan feedback. For example, I love their regular acrylic paint line, but those pots are such an awful design that I now buy from other companies who use dropper bottles instead. And don't get me started on the constant rule changes, which make the codex or army book you just bought instantly obsolete. That stuff drives me nuts!
@razielthewraith2042
@razielthewraith2042 2 жыл бұрын
@@redscope897 I don't think I said that naff paint pots were the sum of the problem. The major concern for GW has to be the rapid rise of home-based 3D printing. I'm a huge fan of GW; have been for over 20 years. I'd like to see them continue to innovate and thrive, and cool stuff like Contrast paints are a great example of how they can still do that. I just don't think that near-constant ruleset changes is the way to go about it, nor is charging $30 for a pair of clippers. People have access to more hobby options and advice now than ever before, thanks to the internet/KZfaq. My point being that GW - although a titan of the industry, and long may they reign - are like the Imperium of Man: beset on all sides by ravenous competitors, looking to carve out chunks of the galaxy for themselves.

For the most part I have to agree (apart from the 'keeping up with GW' stuff, because I don't have a YT channel :D). Their non-standard paints/washes are nice (don't get me started how much I hate the base/layer paints system), their models, for the most part, are very cool, though honestly I think some of the character stuff overly complicated and overwrought. The pricing model is a bit annoying though, a single monopose (with limited options) plastic Commissar costs half as much as an entire multipart Mark III Space Marine squad... For the most part if I want a character model it's usually cheaper to kitbash one than it is to buy that specific model.

Personally, Its not just the models for me. There are tons of other companies out there making top notch models and Resin printing is now at the point where its quality is as good as GW aside from being made out of resin. However, I enjoy the background and the story of the GW models and when I am painting something from a story that I like, I imagine the model in the story and that helps me put more into my painting. Earlier this year I painted some non-GW models for someone else on commission. The models were fine. I did a good job on them and the client was happy. I hated the process. I felt like I was just going through the motions and when I was done, I didn't feel attached to the models despite spending so much time on them. Maybe it was because the models weren't mine, but maybe it was because I had no connection to the story behind the models.

Years ago people would say the same thing and I could not understand how anyone even moderately invested in the miniature space would be able to completely ignore the terrible flaws in GW sculpts. Coming back from a long hiatus I gave GW the benefit of the doubt when people were saying how great the quality is but they unfortunately still have the same issues I had with the sculpts 10 years ago. The drafting angles and complete lack of problem solving in the sprue layout that often results in any detail along a certain plane of a sculpt is completely deleted is still unfortunately there. If what people actually mean is the art style I can agree and maybe it is just miscommunication but art style =/= quality or detail.

Don't worry, Atom, we ALL get a bum (or bummer) model(s). For me, it was the Rogue Psykers from BSF. I filed and shaved and couldn't get them to fit flush in their pauldrons, a huge gap on each side. Finally just slathered the pauldrons in Liquid Green Stuff until the gaps were (mostly) filled, then painted them a dark metallic color that just absorbs a lot of light to (hopefully) take most of the attention away from the shoulder area. (This was before I learned of those wondrous homemade sprue glue.😆)

I appreciate where you are coming from, and I appreciate how well you've articulated the nuance (well, it'd be considered nuanced for the internet) feelings on this. Like, I'm not a GW fan at all, but like, I also use their shades, and I've gotten a handful of models of theirs over the years. It's almost like you can just be a person and not need to fit into a preconceived camp of some other person...

I have a massive WHFB collection (that is now a massive 9th age collection). I used to think GW had the absolute best models on the planet, but with the advent of 3d printing there are so many high quality, unique, models on the market that I can no longer justify the massive cost difference of GW. Plus they can't write a decent ruleset to save their life.

I loved this video. For me, while I have been a bit dissatisfied with a lot of what GW has been doing of late (I do still enjoy AoS and what used to be called Specialist games), to me nowadays, a model is a model. if I like it, and I can fit it into one of the armies/factions/whatever I play in a given game (or can make something up to fit them in!) then I'll buy it. I use GW models in other games, and vice versa. No need to be tied to a company for anything. I'll use tools and paints I like from everyone and if I can make a cool thing smooshing together GW, 3rd party and 3d printed to order parts then I've got a cool toy to play with.

Innsmouth! Wonder if Uncle Atom ever spent a night in the Gillman House? On another note... I have to agree that GWs models are nice, but sometimes that $40 price for one model is laughable. BUT that being said they have nice sets that I think are worth it like Blood Bowl, Warcry, and Necromunda. The new Outcasts gang set for Necromunda looks really cool and I can honestly see myself using it for many other games I own like Stargrave or This Is Not A Test. Plus GW tends to pack their sets with lots of options and for kitbashers out there that means you'll always have some usable bits to trick out a kitbash later on down the road.

This is basically the boat I'm in with gw as well. Time was, anything not gw was just not as good. Now? Not only are gw kits less repeatable in terms of the mono posing, and not only sre they an order of magnitude more expensive....the alternatives in the 3d printing space can hack it with them in terms of quality. And sometimes? Even if gws sculpts edge them out a little bit just the fact of variety means I won't be buying exclusively gw. My first five Blood Knights for my new soul blight army will be the new gw sculpts. The next 5 will be 3d printed- I've got some gorgeous multi part sculpts from Highlands Minis with an old school vibe, and some from Fleshcraft that are deliciously customizable.

It is good to throw public commentary out there like "I will not spend $40 on a 28mm model" and if there is a cheaper product out there you will buy that (very soon with Army Painter speed paint I am rather excited about) it may get them to adjust their pricing in a competitive market (maybe). The comment on 3D printing is a valid thing to mention, like you may want to supplement the Necromunda market with a futuristic cargo container food-stand I have seen out there. 40k is attractive with their huge universes they create. Withdrawing everything including fan-art behind a paywall could swiftly remove the one main advantage they have in the market. Almost all of their free advertising is gone which is a shame since mostly bitterness toward them is outside of Warhammer+. Even the new product reviews in KZfaq is drying up somewhat due to the various agreements and worries of GW interfering with content providers. I hope they come to their senses at some point. You carry on as you do, we all go where we think product is the most "shiny" and you stated your preferences rather clearly.

Oil washes have totally stolen the show for me these last couple of weeks, you have got to try them if you haven't yet. Get yourself a high quality ivory black and a burnt umber to mix in and it absolutely blows agrax and nuln out of the water. The grim dankness is strong with oils.

We stumbled (almost literally) by accident into a GW store while on vacation and got intrigued and bought a Sigmar box a couple of years ago. yeah, i'm Super happy with Warcry, i've been playing it with my friend for a while now, and probably the main feature of the game that both me and by friend like is the fact there is only 3 books for the factions, choas, destruction, and order. this allows us to whenever we feel like, just play a different faction! because i 3D print a lot, it's very easy to grab some fantasy models, which there are a lot of proxies for AOS, I can print off a new army, have i painted, and ready to go by the end of a weekend.

On the quality of their models, I agree for the -most- part and your bit on the Carin Wraiths reminded me of the horror that was building Lady Olynder. I find alot of their bigger models are a bit overdesigned and a pain to build, but to be fair they are older models usually. For bigger center pieces I'd love to see more push fit like that Killa Boss. One of my favorites and I don't even play kruleboyz. Warcry/Frostgrave are my favorite games and that got me into AOS with my buds and its been fun. I really just hope they don't ruin it and do what they did to Kill Team. I'd really like to see some of thr neglected armies get a boost. I sorta wish they'd have a come to their senses with some of their pricing, I know that's a dead horse, I just think they have to balance their value for some of their boxes. The disparity is nuts.

I agree with most everything stated in the video. GW makes great models Buuut $40 USD for a single plastic 28mm figure as is becoming standard is a bit ridiculous. After initial manufacturing of the model they have what like maybee $.05 cents USD in the plastic and maybee another $ .50 cents in packaging. There are alot of other companies out there selling their models some are the same quality for around $ 10 - $ 15 USD which seems a reasonable price. The whole issue is with the official GW tournaments and their rules that you can only use their stuff. This prohibits alot of other great models from being used. I can remember in the early 1990's when I started you could mostly " Run what you brung " as their was not a very large selection of vehicles and such. So their was alot of substitution and scratch built creations being used and it did NOT matter as long as they were played by the rules. Example in the early days there were almost no Titan models and what few there were cost alot. So since ( I think it was Revell if I remember right) there were Robotec models that were almost the same exact scale they were substituted as being fairly inexpensive at that time. Everyone still had a good time. Which is the whole point of a wargame " Hobby " not the who can out spend the other guy.

For odorless resin use Matter Hackers MH Build Series - 3D Printer Resin. It's epoxy free. You still should vent it for safety (I have mine in an outdoor attachment to the house and run a fan to blow it out the open window), but it doesn't smell bad AT ALL. It's amazing stuff. But is a pain to get to stick to the build plate. You need major texture for the plate. I hope someday they can change their formula just a bit to overcome this without sacrificing the odor-free part. But in terms of being odor-free the stuff is EXCELLENT. I can't use ANY other brand because the epoxy DESTROYS me at first whiff. But the matter hackers stuff is right as rain. No problems with my breathing or with the odors at all.

Gave up on new GW models (mostly) and games a few years ago - my budget is tiny (£50pcm) and there's too much nickel and diming going on, book for this, book for that etc. At least their older stuff is set in stone, and mostly available relatively inexpensively if you know where to look. I love warcry too. I'm kinda substituting warcry with new Kill Team though. I looked into one page rules, but they're leaning on the same mechanica s old kt, and I don't like that style of rules. I like how new kt went closer to warcry, and the fact is that Wahapedia isn't covering Warcry as of yet, so I don't have access to Warcry while I do have access to Kill Team. I'd love to find another game to get invested in, but the fact is that with no non-gw, non-hasboro games gets participants. I either play Warhammer, Magic, and Dungeons and Dragons, or I sit at home being disappointed that I nobody showed up for game night.

I do wonder if my take on games workshop is different from some people's because I got into the hobby as an adult, and via DnD, so I don't have an infinite amount of childhood nostalgia about GW. I think some of their models are good, but nowadays other companies make much better models at better prices. I just buy the occasional model I like, normally second hand because the new prices are ridiculous. Nuil oil is good, but I plan to experiment making my own oil based washes as the price is exorbitant, and seemingly in bottles designed to spill and let air in. The constant rebooting of games needlessly to force repeat sales of books is just taking advantage of people so invested in a game (in both time and money) that they feel they just cannot walk away and play something else. I have friends who seem to have absorbed GW into their own sense of worth, so if you criticise their game (or like another one) they get really offended. I'm not boycotting GW, it has just become mostly irrelevant to me.

dont worry about it. spraypaint will stick to things. when they clear up grafiti they use high preassure water or sandblasting so your paint wont come of easily. If you play at home you dont even really need to varnish them if you get the habit of only gripping them by the base. the model companies tend to tell us that only their product can prevent forestfires and chipping but a lot of people use regular rattlecans designed for art or cars at half the price and it turns out just fine. If the particular brand you have used wont bind to plastic then its an exeption and not the rule. Just let the rattlecan set for a bit and you wont have an issue in 99% of cases

Rarely do you get a good answer from social media without first filtering noise from the signal. I've used normal acrylic spray paint for years without issue. It comes out a bit thicker with some brands, but that just means I move the can faster for the same coverage.

I'm honestly glad there's so much more hobby, if for no other reason than competition being healthy. I got into it a few months ago because I've loved the setting of Warhammer since I was a kid, so GW has really been all I've been looking at by default. I have shopped around and looked at other miniature games, but as a fan of Sisters of Battle and (recent) Drukhari stuff, GW sculpts have been my go-to, which can be crushing in the money department. On the other hand, a lot of third party stuff tends to be hyper sexualized for both of those factions and that's not my jam. But again, competition is super healthy, and I've been eyeing the Spire models from Conquest: Last Argument of Kings covetously. Hopefully more companies gain traction in this business so GW has to step their game up.

Merry Christmas. I haven't brought anything since 2017. Now I'm selling it all & moving into historicals like Bolt Action & Nepoleonic's. Apparently Cursed City is back???
