Hero Session: amzn.to/1RWJI1W
Lately I’ve been trying to streamline my camera gear. Although it’s nice to get a bunch of angles and make everything look cinematic, sometimes it’s more important to be nimble. This is the reason I decided to buy the GoPro Hero 4 Session. Today, we’ll surgically recess this Hero Session into my forehead. I’m tracing the shape of the session for a precise cut. Well, not exactly.
The real plan is to hide it under my helmet visor. If you have a GoPro or almost any action camera for that matter, you probably have some of these little mounts. Back when I used to work on cars for a living, we had a trick to make 3M tape stick better. Heat it up. You can carefully apply heat with a hair dryer or even a lighter. When it’s tacky and bubbling, mount it to a clean surface and hold it there until it cools. Good luck removing it.
Using this method, I mounted my Session to the underside of this visor. The camera is so light that I barely even notice it’s there. I can just have this with me all the time and never miss a shot again.
Like GoPro’s other cameras, the Session has Quick Capture, which means that pushing the record button activates the camera from an off state. Another push of the button stops the recording and turns the camera off. By only recording what I need, I’ve been able to stretch the battery well beyond a full day of shooting. The video quality is pretty good and surprisingly stable.
So I’m pretty happy with my purchase, and loving the camera, but I did notice something pretty surprising…
My Hero Black fits in the same exact spot on this helmet, maybe even better. I weighed these cameras and was surprised to find that they’re identical. I started second guessing myself, and weighed them again with the helmet, only to obtain the same result. So did I waste my money? If it’s not smaller or lighter, what am I gaining?
Well for one it’s cheaper. When this camera first hit the shelves it was $400, which is just absurd. Now that it’s only $200, it’s actually one of the most affordable GoPro cameras available. It’s not as powerful as the Silver or the Black, but it still does shoot at 60 frames per second, and has Superview mode for nice first person shots.
Another great thing about the Session is that it’s water resistant. While water resistance isn’t usually important to me, it’s nice to know that my equipment will survive the mud or the rain. The Hero Black requires this water resistant housing, which makes it crazy heavy, and super dorky looking. The Session is black on all sides, and blends in with my equipment. Since I do a lot of third person shooting, a big old GoPro sticking off the top of my head would sort of ruin the shot.
The session also has this smooth glass across the front which allows you to just wipe it off with your shirt.
Over the weekend, I used my Session and a headstrap to go out into the cruise port as the ships were leaving. You see that dot right there? That’s me. As the ships pass the water gets sucked out of the channel. I was in up to my neck before. As soon as the ship exits the channel, the water comes rushing back in, which is freakin awesome. I’m getting a terrible idea for bike video right now, but we’ll just have to wait and see how that pans out. In any case, it was really cool to be able to capture this moment with a camera so small and light.
By always having this indestructible little cube on me, I’m hoping to get a lot more shots that I would have otherwise missed. I’m liking the Hero Session.

Hey just a heads up. I had a cam mounted to the under side of my visor and it worked awesome. But then I had a pretty nasty faceplant at the dirt jumps. After examining my face and the helmet I realized that I was lucky to have not been wearing the camera on that run. It looked like the camera could have been jammed right into my nose or one of my eyes. Since then I've stuck to putting it on top or on the sides of my helmets. Loving the vids man and looking forward to your BMX series!

I’d definitely go for the Hero 5 Session if it wasn’t because of the non-removable battery, cuz I live in the tropics and it gets pretty hot so the battery may degrade quicker. And according to the manual the battery is non-serviceable so that sucks. Having a really hard time deciding because other than that the Session is perfect!

Loving my session, love that it comes out of its housing so quick and easily, love that it's easy to place without it falling over, love the one button record, love that it doesn't slip about on my dashboard, love that it does 1080 superview that my hero 3 silver doesn't. Love that it's waterproof but the sound is still good... The list goes on.

@letsgocamping88
@letsgocamping88 8 жыл бұрын
+VLOGNOSIS there's no stabilisation. The wide angle lens really helps the viewer to not feel sick watching it as they can lock on to an object in the screen if that makes sense. I've quite a few videos on my channel. The later ones have the session, the earlier ones are the hero 3.

Wondering what that idea you mentioned is. Either a race from point to point before the water comes back in or riding the the port.... either way, it'd be sweet to see you build a 'missile bike.' Me, my mate and my dad built up missile bikes, rough bikes with nothing but the bare essentials. What makes them fun is that the bare essentials are good quality, and you get some real good laughs on them. As an example, my bike has a average quality ally frame, but has Maxxis Swamp Thing tires, Snafu rigid forks, plastic time trial saddle (silly $$$) and the triple chainrings ground down to the 22t only. A HD derailleur along with some Tektro discs with good sized rotors makes it a real blast. We rode them in the lake while we were on holiday and got in to the point where we were standing on our pedals to keep our heads above the water. We got to the point where we had to breathe through our noses because our mouths were under water. You can put rocks in you're pockets so that you don't float off your bike, but that's a bit of a dumb idea if you go too deep. Just don't make the mistake my friend made. At the time he had narrow tyres, which didn't have enough flotation to lift the bike if he fell off. He fell in where it was over his head if he was off the bike. He had to dive down and get it. The key to having fun like this is to look after the bike (sounds silly after me telling that story!). Either way, we took grease guns and drilled holes in the hubs and bottom brackets and pumped them full of grease before and after each ride (expelled any water which got in). Chains were re-lubed and the rear mech was CRC'd and the only issue we had was the organic pads I had falling apart (didn't get round to fitting sintered pads). We had holes drilled in the frames to the the water out, and seatposts and bar ends were taken out to avoid any water staying behind. Anyways, hope you at least read this Seth, took a while to type (I'm not the fastest!) and maybe one day we'll see you on a missile bike?!

omg i had this idea too! love this story. btw what means CRC'd? and what derailleurs did you have?

@Crawlerer79 8 жыл бұрын
CRC, it's like WD40. And I used a Sunrace M50. Heavy and clunky, but had taken heaps of abuse. Still works with pond weed in it and its been smashed on rocks so many times. Best deraileur out I reckon!!!!

I like your under visor idea, I think I'll try it. I was really surprised at how much I liked the quality etc from my GoPro Session, for the money I was expecting something I'd use once or twice then put it away but I've been actively trying to find good mounting positions for mtb'ing, top of helmet I just didn't get on with - it was too high so made the terrain look flat and found it kept getting whacked by twigs, handlebar mount is surprisingly stable but found cable vibration spoil the footage unless I was willing to mount it higher on the bar, which I'm not. & the chest mount, I just didn't like the angle.
