This week, we strip down the engine from my BMW S1000RR race bike to show you why it failed at Cadwell Park last year, and, ultimately, stopped me from finishing in second place in the championship.

Brilliant contents as always. What dawned on me when looking at the s1000rr engine being stripped is that the engineering skill and design expertise will be utterly eradicated once the full switch to electric takes over. These engines are subject to the collective skills and ingenuity of engineers, designers and machinists who develop and test the fruits of their labour so we can ride. All this is lost when transportation is nothing more than glorified milk floats. A real shame and a key part of many people’s lives is brought to an end by politicians promoting a switch to a technology which doesn’t sort the issue in any case. Gutted.

Good stuff. Great lesson about oil temp. In the Trans Am series, we had engine builders that used .0007 main clearance. You couldn't even START those engines without having the oil above 200F.
@Hypersonik
@Hypersonik 7 ай бұрын
The thing is that's a road engine, not a race engine. If you look at Motul 300v it has no approvals and just has nonsense about 'beyond approvals'. Use a race oil in a race engine by all means, but that engine is an off the shelf engine. Manufacturers spend hundreds of thousands on oil and engine testing so thinking you know better than them would be a mistake, yet many people do.

@@RohanSanjith I'm sure Ricky knows what he's doing, but it's the speculative guesses as to failure that get us all. I also don't like that 300V has no approvals and that whilst race teams use it, they're teams ion mega budgets only caring about bhp, not the actual real things club racers need to care about (I.e paying for a new engine after you've lunched that one in

I can lend you my Ducati L2 engine if you want to break it down, explain the desmo system and check clearences if you want.......anything to avoid the desmo service cost 😂 Yamaha developed the LFA engine , i guess thats why it can rev out like it does.

With how common this generation BMW is with racers and trackday riders yes it will cost a pretty penny in parts but re sale is probably quite high due to demand, I'm guessing.... 🤔 But if someone was to pay an engine builder to do it and sell it on probably not worth it with labour cost. Lucky Ricky's labour is 'free' to himself. Although still takes time away from other jobs

I'm always horrified by the number of parts a full engine consists off. Remember my 100cc 2-stroke air-cooled kart engine and how simple it was. Add in valves and cams and water cooling and oil cooling and pumps and gearbox and whatnot and the complexity of it shoots off the roof. Now he has to put it all back together. It's like building a scale model kit, it's a lot of parts and looks like you have a long road ahead but you get to it and soon enough you put the last piece in.

Hello Sir, I am seeking your help with my dilemma. I bought a 2016 Yamaha R1M with a bad engine. With some research, I learned that R1 engines between years 15-16 has a problem (crankshaft go bad and issue with piston cylinder over heating and burn out). I don’t want to buy another 15-16 motor and I was told that the R1 from 17-19 engines will be a swap engine with no issues. I found a R1 2019 but I don’t know if it is a swap job only or I need to purchase throttle body and harness to make it work. I really appreciate your feedback

In good spirit. I.suspect somethings amiss here. The duration for warming that much oil sounds just too short. Measurmenta of atandalone oil temp and pressure, various 6 cyl bmw.. about 10 12 miles of light driving before 7l of oil is warm. Longer in winter. Longer again if the capacity is 10 to 12l. I wonder how accurate the gauge is? Pressure and temp gauges are normally damped as true fluctuations with load worry most customers, ao the temps may be 'jiggled' to stop worried phone calls.
