I moved to Mexico this year and I regret I didn't do it sooner. I feel 100% safer than I did in the US, the culture and the people are very friendly and welcoming, and I can create my own career here. The fresh fruits and vegetables are amazing, the weather is great, and it's more about family and relationships, not how many hours you're working. I discover so much here, about myself and my city. I can visit other cities pretty cheaply, eat amazing food and see amazing sites. Health care is affordable and top notch. I'm never moving back to the US.

I've spent years living in South American countries and have only recently begun to spend time in Mexico. Among the things I really appreciate about Mexico is that, aside from being very open and genuinely friendly, Mexicans in general do not look at gringos as marks. In some countries further south you have to be very careful where that is concerned. It gets tiring. Mexico is a special place.

As a Mexican who has lived in various countries and also a Canadian citizenship holder, there is no place like Mexico in terms of people’s warmth and service, like Andrew rightfully pointed out. Each State is its own “mini-country” of its own due to its vast heritage of different cultures and geographical landscapes. But the warmth and friendship is shared all across. Not to mention the food, it’s just staple wherever you go. And safety? Well, like any country you find issues but overall I feel now safer here in CDMX than in Vancouver... Never thought that would ever be possible but nowadays that’s how I see it.

as a 1st generation american-american (first EVER in my family), i aqcuired my dual citizenship & moved to mexico a few years ago, and i have to say.. it was THE BEST decision i've ever made in my life. yes, even though i do speak spanish, and have been to mexico many times in the past throughout my life, i still had to assimilate. that being said, my quality of life is 10x better. people are MUCH friendlier, funnier, women are much better partners, food - i don't even have to say anything, the culture, music, parties, public transportation, extremely low cost and accessibility to medication and/or doctors. the list goes on FOREVER. i can safely say i will be spending the rest of my life here. i am lucky to have mexican heritage, and it truly made it easier to assimilate, integrate, and be well received by my mexican folks. in america, being a proud mexican is looked down upon by full-blooded americans. in mexico, EVERYONE is a proud mexican. México abusers all over the place now where I live. The reasons for moving are so selfish. They mostly do not integrate with us. Not even speak regularly Spanish. Instead, they have their own groups, creating segregation and worse, gentrification. I wouldn’t have any issue if: they were more open and at least trying to insert themselves culturally and create relationships with local people. Also, if you are going to live in another country, it is only fair if you pay taxes to that country, and I would argue to also work for a company in that country if you are an employee, or develop your company here if you are a an employer.

Although the conquering of Latin America and Mexico, is yet another ongoingly interrelated, saga... as the subversion went from the M.E. and N. Africa via the Iberian Peninsula, etc. into Europe... then later, to the Americas!) They use everyone... and have recently 'displaced' something like 70 million people, worldwide... then after overrunning the US and Canada, the UK, Western Europe, Oz, etc., the first world peoples then FLEE their own countries (and recent immigrants, return home) to get AWAY from the rapidly deteriorating conditions, and mis- governance, etc., invading their home country! It's a vicious, cycle... that really only benefits the 'inbred' narcissistic psychopaths, in the top .000001%! Mexico, etc. is now reaping, what the US, did... as the saga, continues. (Much like the indigenous peoples did when foreigners invaded Europe, then the Americas, et al.) I explained much of who and what is behind it, in my prior comment. As someone living in Mexico, in a relatively safe location, I agree with what you say. HOWEVER, security is still an issue in the country, and many are quite concerned about that. People coming from abroad should NEVER underestimate their safety, and not attract any unwanted attention. There was a recent case of a citizen from India having his life cut short because he withdrew a large amount of cash at the airport and was noticed by some gangs. If security and crime could be addressed along with other aspects such as corruption, inefficient bureaucracy, and nepotism, then yes, Mexico has lots of potential, and quite good food on top of that.

I'd probably never get married though, so for now let's just say I'm supporting myself only. What you say sounds great, a 4 BR place would give me lots of space, and under $1000 is awesome. You say in "decent" neighborhoods. Honestly the only thing holding me back from moving to MX is worries about safety, especially if criminals target people who seem like foreigners/Americans. I'm browned skinned, so visually I don't think I'd stand out, but speaking English like an American would be an obvious clue. I took 4 years of Spanish 30 yrs ago in high school, so I speak it a little, maybe on a scale of 1 to 10, I speak at about a 4. But I could learn more since I already have a good foundation. So are the neighborhoods I could live in on that income places where I would have to worry about safety? Also, could I live in a "desireable" beach/resort type area on that income, or in a nice area of a big city like Guad, Monteray, or CDMX, or would it have to be in more of a smaller town in the interior where there may not be as many things to do?

@@KP99 If you're in a popular tourist beach town the rents will generally be higher. If you're living there permanently, maybe have a real estate agent find you a place and negotiate on your behalf to avoid being charged gringo prices. Or, do some market research and have a good grasp of what the local market values actually are so you don't get overcharged. Facebook marketplace is useful for seeing what local Mexicans would be paying. Having your Spanish up to at least an intermediate conversational level is highly advantageous, and frankly it's a requirement if you don't want to be exploited. It will also increase your quality of life since relatively few Mexicans speak much English. You can get by on the basics, but I'd recommend learning the language. You'd be surprised how far you can advance in a few months or a year. As far as safety, you shouldn't have much of a concern in general. Certain places can be riskier, like some neighborhoods in Mexico City for instance. As long as you're not walking around wearing expensive jewelry and $500 shoes in dicey neighborhoods, or wandering through sketchy areas at night, you'll be fine. Common sense and situational awareness like anywhere else. The safety concerns are somewhat overblown. You'll be far safer than a Mexican police officer would be. As far as rent prices it really varies depending on city, state, neighborhood, level of amenities and so on. A quick search on FB marketplace will show you what you can get for $1000 in a nice town like Puerto Vallarta, for instance. You could find a nice apartment or small house in that range.

Mexico has a lot to offer, and you can enjoy a pretty high standard of living especially if you earn USD/CAD etc. Cost of living is substantially less than its northern neighbors (although Mexico can no longer be consider a "cheap" country, especially if you want to live and eat well). It does however have its downsides. One of the biggest adjustments for an American/Canadian is the overall aesthetic. Large parts of the country are, quite frankly, ugly. If you're accustomed to the kinds of amenities, especially parks and green spaces that you'd find in American or Canadian cities, Mexico can be a bit disappointing in that department. Not to mention when you do find some open space it is often full of garbage and trash and discarded construction materials, plastic bottles and all manner of refuse floating in waterways and so forth. In short, it can be sort of stinky and trashy and ugly. It's not on the same level, nowhere close really, as what you're used to in North America. CDMX is a lively and dynamic city, with some nice parks and an excellent metro system making it easy to get around. That being said if you like peace and quiet, it's likely not the place for you. 20 million people gets tiring. Also important to consider that, statistically, Mexico City is not a particularly safe place. If you're considering living there, and Mexico in general, you need to educate yourself, familiarize with local culture and socioeconomic realities, and update your security practices accordingly. Mexican food is (or can be) fantastic. It can also be mediocre. Mexico City has a good selection of international fare, but if you're in other Mexican cities it can be tricky to find anything more than an endless menu of tacos and pizza. It's not like most North American cities where you can find superb quality food from any country. I've heard much about the "warmth" of Mexican people, but I didn't find them any warmer than people I've met from anywhere else. There's nothing special about them, to put it bluntly. There are lovely Mexicans and there are idiots too, just like everywhere else. There is a wealth of nature to explore outside the cities. Mexico has many national and state parks, and protected wilderness areas. And of course the beaches are amazing (depending where you go). There are also some fantastic real estate opportunities, especially if you're willing to look beyond the usual touristic areas. Unless you're in a smaller town, I'm not sure I'd want to raise a family in Mexico, to be honest. I suppose that depends on your values and priorities. Children don't play outside by themselves and are mostly confined to indoor areas or courtyards behind walls. It's not common to see kids just running around their neighborhood playing. Parents rightfully have security concerns. This is something to consider carefully. My recommendation would be that if you are planning to raise kids in Mexico, find a smaller town where you'd feel comfortable with them playing outside and being kids and being safe and free. No country is perfect and we all have to weigh our decisions. I would still choose Mexico over Canada no matter what, just for the climate alone. When comparing to the USA, it would really depend on what city and state we're talking about. Another thing to consider is if you're a freedom loving American who wants to own guns and go shooting, you'd best stay north of the border. It is possible to own some firearms in Mexico but the process is much more strict and highly regulated. And of course any review of Mexico would be incomplete without pointing out it is technically a narco-state. Mostly it all runs under the surface and you won't see much unless you're in a particularly dangerous place like Celaya or something, or buying cocaine from a guy in the bathroom at a cartel-owned club in a tourist beach town. Nevertheless, it is a reality. And just as you might be leaving your current country partly for political reasons, you'd better at least understand that the political situation in Mexico is, for lack of a better word, Fubar, and won't change significantly in our lifetimes unless the Mexican people rise up in armed revolution, which probably ain't gonna happen. Make your peace with it and enjoy a beer and some cheap(ish) tacos on the beach. Overall, in terms of quality of life, Mexico has everything you need and a wealth of natural beauty. You will run up against certain limitations and drawbacks; some of those little things just have to be discovered by spending time there. I'd give it 7.5/10 overall. It's definitely possible to find your slice of paradise and carve out an amazing life down there.

I am a United States Citizen and have been living in Mexico for 12 years. I was introduced to Mexico through a Craigslist ad encouraging to try living in Mexico and working in San Diego. The cost of living in Mexico is much more affordable with rent approximately 300 dollars a month compared to over 2,000 dollars a month in San Diego. I did have the best concerning the food and other shopping items purchased being able to purchase in either San Diego or Tijuana. The Border Crossing could be an issue during busy times. A SENTRI or Global Entry Card would be helpful.

I lived in Mexico City, Puerto Vallarta, Rosarito, Guadalajara and Chihuahua. Here are some wonderful facts: 1- If you wish to rent a place, be ready to present a co-signer to your rental agreement, or put up a huge deposit (not preferred by the owners). 2- While working in a project at a Mexican mine, while being driven to the airport my car was escorted by a pickup truck with guards carrying rifles and submachine guns. 3- When my family and I lived in Chihuahua we lived in a nice house, with a swimming pool, inside a guarded residential area. It was like living in a golden cage, as we couldn't go out without seeing people hanging from bridges by the neck, be threatened by shootouts, or possibly seeing a severed head in the street. 4- If you want to live in a house that will be almost as comfortable as an American home, be prepared to have a lot of money. 5- When in Puerto Vallarta we found out that it is good if you are at a hotel. Shopping at a large supermarket we found food, particularly vegetables, to be very dirty, not trustworthy for our consumption. 6- Bureaucracy is out of control. 7- Businesses will screw you up with no consequences. 8- All people are not as nice as stated. I have had many rude interactions there as in the US or anywhere in the world. 9 - If you say that infrastructure is great, I am sure you haven't been driving around, you don't use Mexican utilities, and you don't use Mexican internet. I am sure I could remember a lot more but will stop using my time for nothing.

Mexico City is one of my favorites in the world - it has a great buzz, some beautiful neighborhoods. For something quieter, with similar climate, a small international airport & a booming economy - an hour from San Miguel there is Querétaro. I bought a house in its historic center & it’s a fantastic lifestyle: very walkable, lots of markets, grocery stores, restaurants, excellent hospitals… many cultural events to attend. It’s not as sophisticated as CDMX or has as many expats as San Miguel, but it’s moving in that direction every year…

Many lakes, rivers are dry and things are getting worse with time. I was in Morelia and was sad to see that within the 3 months I was there, it only rain once and for only 3 minutes. If the Mexican government doesn’t do anything about it and stop the construction in hills, taking the water away from the cities, pretty soon, it will start buying water from Bill Gates!

There are sacrifices, though… The security factor is one. Opening up a business, a México makes you into a target, you’ll be extorted without question. The healthcare system for general healthcare is poor, but with a little bit of money you can go to a private clinic. Any major things, you’d want to be in the USA. The benefits I find are a vibrant culture with people that are growing… Mexico has a lot of room for growth, so it’s a very fun place to be… People are alive, moving up in the world, hanging out and doing fun stuff. But don’t think it’s all peaches and cream… Because there are trade-offs

@DePalma. 7 ай бұрын
@@toni-xz6dd everything is a relative term, we’re speaking in generalities, and I would say generally, people need to be aware that security in Mexico‘s very low… Especially in certain parts. The one thing you have going for you is if you’re a white American or black American or Asian American, you’re probably gonna be OK… Mexican Americans will have more trouble. So, in speaking of relative terms, if you’re from the hood and used to hang shots all the time… Might not seem that dangerous to you, if you’re from a good neighborhood like most Americans are… It might seem a little bit sketchy lol

I just hope Mexico understands the gentrification problem and starts working in policies that prevent the local population to be displaced to the outskirts of the cities or to the marginalized areas of certain cities, while still allowing foreigners to put some investment and enjoy our beautiful country. If this problem is not managed, then all the best areas to live in Mexico will be privately owned by foreigners only and also soon the prices will be as high as in Europe/US and I'm pretty sure nobody wants that. Limit the number of foreign immigrants that can buy and settle in certain areas, or heavily tax Digital nomads/people with foreign income is one of the few solutions I can think of right now.

Our daughter was born in Pachuca so she is a Mexican citizen. I didn’t know that the US court could terminate a Mexican citizen rights to her own Mexican born child. Oh I thought she was my biological daughter but I found out only after my sister made a horrendous claim to DCFS that I was buying and selling kids. Homeland Security testified they didn’t find any evidence of anything. My sister was left out of our parents will so she made this claim to DCFS because I wouldn’t give her my share of the inheritance. We need help with the appeal but we are totally broke. No more inheritance left or anymore equity in the house. Anyone have any ideas? We just want our daughter returned back to her mother in Playa Del Carmen.

Andrew while what you said is true, and definitely for someone who doesn't speak or is intimidated by Spanish language, the benefit I see is that it forces me to speak Spanish. I happen to speak Spanish. It's an acquired skill for me. Mexico is one of the places I am able to do it. Within a half a day to a day I am able to function in Spanish for about 80 percent of my conversations. I am not of any Spanish background...I acquired the skill. My Spanish sounds very South American though, as I learned from Argentines how to speak it when I studied in Argentina for a full academic year, after 3 years study in USA. My accent sounds like that of Cordoba Argentina. I know that many are intimidated by Spanish, but my view is that learning something, even if it is not directly tied to your profession, is useful and keeps your brain from atrophy as you age. Now how can I convince my elderly father, still in good health, to not write off Latin America. He keeps calling Mexico dangerous...the whole place.....when we all know it's not monolithic. My wife and I both have our eyes on Puebla, Guadalajara, Monterrey, and Queretaro. Mexico is the immediate go to for my wife and I, if not the USA...where were ate currently based.
