Haki is very realistic…I think conquerer’s haki actually exists and the fact that haki means ambition or spirit is incredible as well! What about how since it’s drawn you can actually see what these characters look like consistently and how their quirks extenuate their appearance even more. That isn’t possible in the Epic Gilgamesh, Jane eyre, Hamlet, etc save for one or two drawings made by someone other than the author theirselves

I think the most beautiful thing about one piece is that despite being a high seas adventure written for a young teen or child audience, it doesnt talk down to these kids. It hits on real themes, and real struggles, esspecially about identity and the rights given and taken from an identity. It's an excellent story about finding a people and being happy with and for it. Were obviously gonna get to the one piece one day, but for the first time in my life I'll use this unironically- the real treasure of the journey is the friends we made and family born along the way.

When I was like 11, I saw that episode where they were going to confront arlong (that epic walk to arlong park). It inspire me so much that it cured me from my extreme fear of the dark. I remember deciding that night that I would not turn on my nightlight, because wanted to be brave like the straw hats. So I laid there, in the darkness, playing the sountrack of that scene on my head over and over again until I feel asleep. I never had to use that nightlight again, and I was very proud of it. It might seem like a small and childish thing, but this series will always have a special place in my heart because of it.

About to get a little dark here so forewarning: One Piece has been with me though some of the absolute lowest points of my life, to the point I genuinely believed I wasn't gonna be around much longer, One Piece was this little bit of happiness I would get every week and it's probably not an exaggeration to say it was a reason to keep going, it was one of the very few things I looked forward too, I actually started the series on a complete whim, I was severely depressed and forced myself to leave the house and I ended up buying volumes 1,2, and 3 for just wanting to read something, and I fell in love with it, I had passion back in my life for something for the first time in what felt like months, One Piece was there through my entire teens pretty much, I started when I was 14 and now I'm 20, I'm completely different to the person I used to be and I'm so happy I decided to keep living partially because I'm able to keep reading One Piece, it was there when I got help I needed, it was there when I slowly put myself back together, and it's still there for me now, and I know when the day comes that it finally ends I'm going to cry my eyes out and just say "Thank you Oda"

Buddy whenever one piece ends, all of us will cry tears and say thank you Oda aka Goda. But i want you to know you matter. You are a stranger to me on a youtube comment, but we are nakama/comrades who love One Piece together. So after One Piece live your life to the fullest, find a passion that you can pursue and love yourself. So that one day you can be that old Grandparent figure who will tell the tale of One Piece to the younger generation. I know i will be that person.

I'm so happy you made the decision to keep going. I think one piece does a similar thing for me by filling a gap when I feel lonely (rather than when I feel depressed). I so often hear that you're not supposed to be so attached to fiction, especially if you're dependent on it for your happiness and I agree with that sentiment. But also, sometimes loving one piece so much is just a little stepping stone. It gives you something to hold on to, and then from there you can figure out your other life problems independently from it, while still gaining some of the happiness you need from it. Sometimes it just feels so good to be invested lol.

Not to get into too much but the same for me. I had a really tough stretch where I wasn’t sure if I wanted to be on this earth anymore, but that’s also when I binged one piece. We watched the entire series together (me for the second time) and now we are watching a few arcs / parts / sagas again. And we talk a lot about it. He makes incredibly many theories about it and tells me about them. It’s beautiful and shows that romantic relationships aren’t the only ones that can give you fulfillment.

For me it was the sword shopping in Loguetown. The initial setup for the scene is "Zoro buys bargain bin swords to replace the two broken by Hawkeye." Yet it has strong world building, good character development for Tashigi, as well as great interaction between her and Zoro, dramatic irony, subtle humor, tension/excitement, Zoro displaying pathological levels of badass, and the wholesomeness of the shopkeeper entrusting his most prized and valuable blade to Zoro. It's simple but spectacular.

Great video Merphy! I think that the most underrated feat by Oda isn't about One Piece itself, but the medium. With books, a writer can trim, re-write, change, adjust and plan the complete package before actually delivering that book out to the world. And the editors, beta readers and such have time to take apart things and fix details. Oda doesn't. Oda draws a chapter three weeks to a month before is released. But there's only a week of time allocated to draw it and plan all the pages. After that is just very minor fixes that editors could catch up. And week by week he is releasing content that becomes canon. If he would change his mind, well, tough luck, you already published that. One Piece keeps being an excellent piece of fiction with a lot of care and dedication after 25 years of doing exactly that. Working, week by week, to create a marvelous world.

I always thought that One Pieces length was a bit to its detriment, that it could probably be streamlined to tell a better paced story. But after seeing ep1015 recently, I realized that its length might actually be one of its strengths, because it allows Oda to depict character growth in a way that is not only unique, but might legitimately be a first in popular culture. I can't think of many other series that have been continuously ongoing for 25 years, telling one story. I read an article on this recently and it puts it very well: Kirsten Carey wrote: "Episode 1015 is officially named, “Monkey D. Luffy! The Man Who Will Become King of the Pirates!” This is in direct reference to episode 1, which is titled, “I’m Luffy! The Man Who Will Become King of the Pirates!” As is even more obvious in the Japanese titles, episode one is a quote from Luffy himself, stating his ambition. Episode 1015 places this as an inevitability To watch One Piece is to experience that shift. The series’ deliberate slowness and length is exactly what makes its characters’ growth so convincing. One Piece is long because it is so character-driven. Oda gives his protagonists the space to grow, really grow, and become the accomplished people they set out to be in the first place. There’s something nothing else like One Piece in this matter: its length is a luxury for character development." What is more impressive and makes this possible in the first place, is the fact that Oda has somehow convinced millions of people to keep reading his story. To go along with this slow, SLOOOOWWW burn. Logically speaking, no one should be going along with this. Over a 1000 chapters/episodes? 25 years?! If you told me that it would take this long to experience this story, I'd have laughed in your face. But Oda makes it so worth it. One Piece is truly one of a kind.

Luffy makes a clear difference when calling someone his friend (tomodachi) and when making someone his nakama. That word has a deeper meaning closer to loving someone like family, a true bond. And just like Jaguar D. Saul said, if you are born in this world you will without a doubt find people who you can truly call nakama, that's what this series has taught me and what I hope to find one day.

The story of One Piece is like finding a treasure chest. As you dig deeper into the plot-box, you find more gems than you initially thought. Finding each gem and knowing the mini story behind it makes you want to find more. And the overarching story that connects everything is just pure genius. I started watching and reading One Piece for the wacky art and the pirate adventure it promises on initial pick-up. I stuck around because of the walk to a certain park. A certain battle by the shore broke me, also when the bubbles pop, by then I was truly invested in the story. I think by the time they find the One Piece, I'd be crying happy tears, for the years we've been on this grand adventure, having to find the end together. Some people think fans of this story are too invested to stop, so we plow through 1000+ chapters just for the sake of it, but I don't think that's the case. One Piece is genuinely a great fictional masterpiece, I think, more than just being a manga or anime. I wish everyone would at least give it a try. It's long, yes. Long series deters people, yes. But is it good? big yes, I dare say on par to all other great literary masterpieces in the world. Also for those finding it hard to pick up, at least give it a chance until the conclusion of Arlong Park. By then, you can tell if you're into it or not.

I'm on chapter 2 now and realized that the quote from Ivankov "Miracles only occur to those who never stop trying" is exemplified as early as chapter 2 when Koby is revealed to have lost hope of escaping Alvida and chasing his dreams. Once he dares to openly defy Alvida knowing he could be killed on the spot, Luffy happens which is his miracle, as he beats Alvida and helps Koby escape and chase his dreams.

You're so right about the humor, it isn't 100%, but most of the time I'm full on cackling. I especially love how meta the humor is. Like some thing crazy happens and you're like " what the hell?!" And the next panel is someone reacting saying "what the hell?!" The fact that the in world characters are having the same reactions as the audience is so validating and show that oda is getting exactly the reaction he intended 😂

I think she hit the nail on the head. For me personally, one of the things I love in Odas writing style is how he’s able to blend comedy and drama so seamlessly in close succession and somehow it rarely (if ever) feels out of place. And the execution on dramatic moments is always flawless IMO. No series, movie, book or any other form of media has made me laugh, cry and get excited more than One Piece.

I would like to list something myself: 1) oda is telling a story at so many layers. He is telling a story about at least three generations coherently which blows my mind in gigantic proportion. 2) The whole one piece world and characters are larger than life. 3) Ridiculous character design shows how beautiful imperfections are. 4) I too think that pervy jokes are cheap humors but that should not overshadow some brilliant moment of humor that shows the level of intelligence of the man. 5) It is about dreamers and parallels drawn between different ways towards achieving goals. 6) So many grey characters that make them almost alive. I could go on and on. But I mean wow just wow.

I first started this series because you and Daniel kept talking about it. But like once I started watching it, I couldn't stop. One Piece is unlike any series I've read/watched before. It's goofy and absurd, but Oda writes it in a way that makes sense. Like the devil fruits are a really whacky and random power, but they don't feel like they are there just for the sake of being silly. I love that Oda takes the time to explain the mechanics in detail. The same also applies for the different settings. Things that should seem weird, really work. I don't know, Oda can make an Alice in Wonderland fever dream island make sense and look really cool. Other than that, the big thing that sold me on this series was the charisma of the crew. This crew is one of the few fictional groups that I absolutely adore. Even without the utterly heartbreaking backstories, the characters themselves are still so interesting and a joy to follow. Like one character's arc is all about becoming more confident and brave, and it's so satisfying to watch him grow and become more confident in himself and in his abilities. I love One Piece.

It is insane how this series is over decades old but is still so consistent and still has so much flare and mystery towards it. I love how oda found a way to make himself so passionate towards this series without getting burnt out by making his world so imaginative and whimsical. Yet, that imagination and whimsical tone doesnt hold back oda when he wants to tackle serious themes like racism, human trafficking, slavery, existing as a crime, regret, death, family, friends, and being remembered when it is all said and done.

For me, what made me fall in love is just how via the connections between people, places, affiliations and histories, we get a world that feels ALIVE. One Piece is so good that you can spend time without the protagonist or the core protagonists and have such a terrific time you literally remember that this story is about Luffy until he is introduced into the action and that just oozes confidence in the characters and the writers that Goda deserves. Another aspect is character design. Oda might as well have a record for most characters created in one story and NONE of them feel like throw-aways in the stories they take part in. And the designs are so good that just with a look into the characters design without any spoken hint, you can gleam so much about them, which them just oozing personality. Oda deserves every little single praise one can give, he's such a goat. One Piece is a life project for him and it shows.

I found One piece 10-15 years ago, I was in a very dark place mentally at the time and Op just happened to be there. Started watching it (dubbed on tv) to try to evade myself from all the stuff I had to deal with and althought at the beginning it was pure distraction it became an essential part of my life and myself. Seeing the characters go from strangers to friends and then from friends to family was one of the first things that hooked me to the story, I had no friends and most of my family was garbage so watching the show was like "damn so this is what an actual friendship/family looks like? Helping and trusting each other just because you care for the other person instead of for some hidden reason?"; and later what made me actually fall in love with the story was getting to know the characters and finding parts of myself in them; I was there in Luffy's love for freedom and wanted to just be able to be myself ignoring what others could say or think of me just like he is; I was there in the struggles of Sanji having barely any food to live with and the later appreciation for food as a whole and cooking specifically (and also the anger of seeing others wasting it like it's nothing); I was there in how Robin just put a facade of "I'm cool, nothing affects me" while on the inside having the mind plagued with all sorts of dark, negative and overall dangerous thoughts and feelings; and I could go on forever but I think you get the point. At this point of the story I also really like Op for what it is, a very fun and well crafted story of pirates having adventures but my favourite parts and the ones I absolutely love are still those smaller things that I connect to personally.

started reading OP when i was 12, loved it for it's fight scenes and epic moments. until one day when I got to Ennies Lobby and for the first time ever a comic book moved me to tears. I was sitting alone in my room and the Robin flashback was so devastating to read, it made me ugly cry. i already really enjoyed OP up till that point, but reading that flashback was the first time i realized there was more to this story im reading then just another fighting manga. so i went back and started to re-read everything, and all the deep message, the morals, the lessons that flew over my naive 12-year-old brain, started to hit me one by one. this story really changed me, it taught me to laugh, to cry, to love, to dream, to be compassionate, and to liberate my own self from whatever it is that is tying me down, whether it is outside influences, or internal anxiety. the way Oda designed this story in both the most minute of details, to the grandest and most spectacular themes, all to tie in together so perfectly, is mind-boggling. a true work of art, a work of 1 in a billion genius. no doubt one of the best story ever told, no doubt.

Awesome video! My best friend had been a long time reader (since 2002) and always encouraged me to give the series a shot. I resisted for years due to its length and bizarre character designs, but finally caved in April of 2022. Within weeks, I was blazing through the series and it has completely consumed me and become my favorite piece of media ever. The characters, the world, the plot, the art, the themes and all the mystery have kept me completely enraptured and I was honestly sad to be caught up after only a few months. No series has ever made me laugh and cry the way One Piece has and I doubt anything ever will. It helped me through so many personal hardships and was definitely there for me when I needed it. The community around it is also incredible and very supportive. Everyone should at least give the series a try because nothing has made me feel the way that One Piece does. What I personally love about One Piece and the reason I keep coming back is the crew. I've spend so much time with the strawhats at this point (I watched the anime when I was a kid back in 2000-2001 and in one way or another they've been in my life since) that reading this story is kind of like meeting up with my friends. I will always like the first half better because of this (back when they were the main focus) but I've grown to appreciate how far they've come and how the plot has become so much bigger than them. But honestly, beyond the lore, the fights, the mystery, the great villains or the stories (all of which are fantastic, don't get me wrong), I keep coming back because I love these guys. These are my crew.

Really good analysis as always Merph. I did the same comment on another video, but I'll do it here again because i feel like it fits. To me, One piece often really does sound like a legend being told in a much much future period of time, with the exaggerated characteristics and features of the world and its inhabitants, which is also directly translated into the artstyle itself. It really does feel like we're watching a legend in the making, history being made in the story that we are told, with plenty of heartwarming, gutwrenching, and sometimes downright hilarious scenes.

I’ve been reading One Piece since I discovered the March 2003 issue of Shonen Jump. It’s been one crazy ride since. I’ve laughed and cried in this series more then any other. It will forever be apart of my life long after it’s over.

I got into one piece about the same time as you Merphy and I totally understand that feeling of IT'S TAKEN CONTROL OF ME and I'm so glad that it has. There's so many reasons why I love this series. I think a big one is honestly just Luffy in general. His commitment to his dreams is great, but his commitment to the people he loves is even better. One piece is genuinely heartwarming in that sense and I've had a lot of stressful days since I started it in which I felt worn out or lonely and one piece has just genuinely lifted my mood and made me feel better. The dynamics between characters and their emotions is probably my favorite thing but the next best thing I think is the insane amount of loose ends this story has that I am almost positive will all be tied up. It will be so extremely rewarding and feel so complete at the end!

Enjoy that reread I always find something new every time I reread it whether it be foreshadowing or small details I missed the first time An example is zeff is the first to call the grand like paradise way back in east blue and we don’t hear that term again til we learn about the new world

I've been a fan of OP since 2015 but I was very hesitant to get into it. I wasn't really a fan of the art style in the beginning so I had to restart 3 times. But once I got to the Baratie and Arlong Park arcs I understood what the series was all about. The scene where Nami asks for help and the walk to Arlong Park hooked me completely. As I kept getting deeper and deeper into the story, the characters got deeper the storytelling and art only got better. Now I can't stop recommending it to people.

I started reading One Piece at the beginning of the school year but stopped for required reading...and I haven't returned to it yet, but I'm currently watching Naruto and now I'm really craving more One Piece. I plan on starting back up in the summer, though I may have to watch your reviews for recaps😂

I love the series so much I have watched one piece of the whole thing not once not twice but 3 times and I am thinking to do the 4th round. I love how amazing the world is the idea of freedom and the ability to do whatever you want without consequence but at the same time doing what is best for other people.

I couldn’t have said it better myself. I started watching the anime a year and a half ago and when I caught up I started reading the manga. It’s easily my favorite work of fiction for a lot of the reasons you said in the video. All the characters really feel like your family! And when I saw your videos reviewing it I just thought “Omg another person is about to get obsessed with this.” It’s always great seeing someone get into the series and seeing what things they love about it as opposed to what I love. It makes me go back and think about things I might not have initially given much thought. Much love and always love seeing your reviews!

One Piece has changed my life in so many ways there’s nothing like it. I feel connected to the characters and story in ways I never thought possible. There’s no way I expected it to be like this when I started about 9 years ago but so grateful for One Piece!

Your video is gonna be the one I'm now gonna use to get others into One Piece from now on. Some of the best arguments and good points I've seen, delivered in a concise and mature way. Usually people can press to hard and turn people away, but this video is honestly perfect for it.

I love One Piece for a multitude of reasons, I've been reading/watching it for over half of my life. But one thing I like about it that I don't see a ton of conversation on is how many men cry in this story. We see characters that are very masculine and stoic have moments where they show emotion and it doesn't diminish them in any way. I want to point out some moments so if you don't want any spoilers stop here. Zoro doesn't really show emotion throughout the story, he is a very stoic badass. Zoro is very cool and I love his character, but one moment that really endears him to me is when he had his first defeat, he is humbled and wounded, but that doesn't make him question himself, through tears he re-declares his dream and promises to never lose again. Franky is another character that is very manly, very cool, some may even say... hardboiled. But he is also one the most emotional and empathetic people we meet in the story. When people are giving their stories of loss or pain Franky is somewhere in the scene bawling his eyes out. There are other moments, but I'm going on too long and this is not the place to type an essay.

Why is One Piece great? Well, it is by definition the world's greatest treasure. Why WOULDN'T it be great!!! Thank you for your videos, I don't really participate much in online communities, and nobody I know personally is nearly as invested or in love with One Piece as I am, so it makes me really glad to see someone, especially a relatively new reader like yourself, take to it as much as you have.

I haven't watched the full video yet, but just want to echo the sentiment. I've read the manga since 2006 (I was 13 at the time) and can't believe it's become such a big part of my life. There's something so special about this series and the idea of it ending is giving me an existential crisis. Either way, experiencing a first read through again with your videos has brought me so much joy

I know I have encountered a good story when someone talks about it and their commentary rouses the heart. This is a great story, a laugh tale, That has me laughing not only at the obvious jokes but it has me laughing a pure revelatory laughter in being able to experience it and it’s truths

One piece is pure content. Chapter reviews, arc summary, theories, reactions, content creators gatherings. And this is only manga. You can have a KZfaq channel out of this alone.

I have been a person in love with the feeling of freedom for as long as I know. And adventure. I do love a great adventure. Instantly connected to Luffy. Then comes Zoro. This guy comes in and in a couple of episodes, takes Honor and Loyalty to a peak too tall humanly possible to scale. They just keep carrying these themes and so many more to higher levels. Damn, it’s a great story and characterization.
