In this video essay, I break down what I love about the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.
Music: Birth of a Hero from Bensound.com
Music: Adventure from Bensound.com
I do not own the films from which I show clips in this video. All clips are used to demonstrate points in the video, which is a review/critique/analysis and does not present the film in its entirety. The clips are edited to short portions of the films and most feature narration on top of them -- they are used to make points about the film. The analysis is for the purpose of commentary and criticism about the films, which makes it Fair Use by both KZfaq and Federal Copyright Law standards.

I still stand by that Davy Jones is an absolute miracle of a villain. On paper, Davy Jones sounds like a ridiculous character. He has a tentacle beard that he uses to play the piano, he makes weird noises with his lips occasionally, he has a literal crab claw as a hand, and he has a giant squid he summons to eat ships. But he is, in my opinion, the most intimidating force in Pirates by a longshot. Yes, even more than Barbossa, who at the end of the day still was a human being. Davy Jones is arguably one of the best villains in cinema and that's in no small part to Bill Nighy's performance.

Davy is definitely more dangerous than Barbossa. Even if Hector also needs to be handled with extreme care... He's much more of a *pirate's* pirate than Jack ever was!

It also can't be understated how human he feels. He is a pretty tragic character and underneath all of that ridiculous design is buried a very human person. Also it's interesting how in Pirate movies symbol of Calypso is a Crab and Davy Jones is part crab and part octopus or squid. And octopuses eat crabs so his form is in a way personification of Davy's hatred for Calypso, but also his love for her because parts of him are still that of a crab and those crab parts are the ones that both make him stronger (his claw) and weaker (his peg leg). A food for thought... a sea food if you will.

@@AzraelSoulHunter That's some deeper analysis on the animal parts than I ever would've imagined! Good job. 😱 And yes indeed, the humanity of Mr. Squid-face really helps a lot. Bill Nighy did ham it up like there's no tomorrow as Davy Jones. It works but I think Nighy was leaning into the ridiculousness. It's the same with Barbossa. Geoffrey Rush was having the time of his life and I think he was the saving grace of Pirates 5. Yeah, Pirates 5 was pointless, aside from the Will and Elisabeth reunion (the only scene in the entire movie that had any real reason to exist), and Jack's character was butchered (he would never give away his compass for anything, not even rum, because even without the context of Salazar being after him, he was very attached to his "effects") but Rush makes that movie at least somewhat worth watching.

@@tomnorton4277 Davy's acting is indeed quuuiiiite mental! Seriously, what WAS that guy smoking?? He does have a pipe. Maybe seaweed? Could he be suffering from seaweed-brain??? And yer rrrright on the money about Geoffrey Rush. The guy is an absolute treasure! He's indeed basically single-handedly what little saving grace film 5 does have. And I should rewatch it one day for that alone. I also like him in Gods of Egypt and Les Miserables. He's SO cool. And I love the story PotC director Gore Verbinski tells about being called while in the supermarket and it was Rush to discuss yet more ideas for his character. That guy took his role SERIOUSLY!! PotC 3 sea battle is certainly epic. But it is also the same ships going at it again that did in DMC. With two full fleets lying just off-screen, going otherwise completely ignored. I find it very difficult to believe that was the original plan. Why write an entire story to work up two fleets, only to then *not* use them?? Thank goodness for us Dutch and the film "Michiel de Ruyter" aka. "Admiral: Command and Conquer" aka. "Sea Battles: The Movie". FINALLY get to see some proper fleet-on-fleet action too!! I also have a soft spot for the ending sea battle in Cutthroat Island. EEEEEPIC music too, plus they did basically *everything* live action AND full-scale. the cgi in 2 and 3 hold up to this day, the flying dutchman especially, even surpassing some movies we get today. Not to mention the stories each movie told fitted in extremely well together, it felt like each plotline in the first 3 movies actually had some weight to them and that they could fit in the world seamlessly, like, undead pirates roaming the seas for medallions that cost them their humanity, or there being 9 pirate captains that roam their own respective part of the world, hell, even the giant fucking cephalpod made sense. However IMO 4 and 5 felt derivative, or lack of a better term, pulling stuff out of their ass.

Carina was just insufferable compared to Elizabeth. You know her character didn't make sense when they had to shred not just the pirates, but literally everybody down to a bunch of bumbling, incompetent fools just to make her seem smart and strong. Didn't have to do that with Elizabeth. The old pirates were menacing and yet charming, but it made sense for Elizabeth to stand her ground when confronting them because she was basically royalty. Plus she learned legitimate fighting skills from Will. Carina was just annoying.

so she was annoying because she's smart ? lol heard that before. I mean, just because the pirates aren't book smart does not mean they are not sea smart....in other words, they are smart in things they are passionate about like sea and life. There is nothing wrong with that. Carina being one of the first women in the franchise that is smart because she reads books is refreshing...she is still vulnerable and 'dumb' to the ways of a pirate. She is clearly not meant to believe in ghosts or the pirate life because she is a woman of science....that is pretty valid lol also, why are you comparing her to Elizabeth when they are two different characters with differing goals. Carina was not meant to be a copy of Lizzy. That would just be sad. I like Elizabeth's characters as a person but if I had to point out how she's the annoying one it would be that she can't pick a man haha. Woman be kissing them all. Now that is annoying.
@26prospector
@26prospector 2 жыл бұрын
@@O_Ciel_Phant0mhive How the hell was she smart or even remotely close to the first smart woman in the franchise? Outside of scientific aptitude, which means nothing if you have nothing else, she was moronic. She had no idea how to handle herself in a situation despite being on her own all her life. Her plan of action in every situation is to declare, "I'm a woman of science!" and then wondering why people were constantly after her, so we can add incapable of learning and adapting from the past, which I might point out is definitively the opposite of science so I don't know where she gets that high regard of herself. Elizabeth's intelligence and strength were beyond admirable and on full display whenever she was on screen. She had the fortitude to hold her own in the presence of the brethren court. She was able to charm and deceive Sao Feng without even knowing what was going on, being able to efficiently piece together Barbossa's plan. She was able to use the pirate's code to command the court and effectively rally them to fight. I can keep going. She was able to bargain face to face with lord Beckett, and not just at gunpoint but was able to match Beckett's game of 3D chess with her own game. From the beginning, she very effectively deceived Barbossa and the crew of the Black Pearl, despite the irony of the situation. The only flak I give her is that it was pretty stupid of her, once she realized Barbossa didn't intend to kill her to break the curse, to not then use the fact that she knew who they needed to her advantage. Elizabeth was so far beyond Carina she eliminates any competition.

Finally, someone who gets it. People overlook just how tightly woven the original trilogy is around its themes. Half the time, people who describe the pirates films can’t remember which moment was from what movie and often treat the story beats like random moments that happen purely out of a desire for shock and entertainment value. Savage Books, for example, has a video where he talks about how Davy Jones is the one thematically deep thing the original 3 have going for them, directly overlooking everything else despite outright listing scenes that exude visual symbolism. There’s a point where he lists the fight in the wheel from DMC as one of many random story ideas Verbinski and Co just threw at the wall to see what would be the most “fun,” and while that’s partly true, Jack, Will, and James all fight in the wheel to represent their motivations directly revolving around one another. A film series can be bombastic and funny, and still be thematically rich. I feel people never realize that when it comes to the original Pirates Trilogy.

i'm happy that someone acknowledges that will & elizabeth were the core of POTC. yes, jack's iconic and the best character to come out of the franchise and I wholeheartedly agree with that, however, he's a character that never really changes/develops - which is fine, as long as you also have characters that do evolve throughout the story. for instance, On Stranger Tides wasn't bad (and when I do a POTC marathon, I'll watch it), but it was kind of a filler and left me with a feeling of 'why was telling this story relevant?' in comparison to the trilogy that had characters that end somewhere else from where they initially started. imo, jack's character works best as a "mediator" that drives characters to a certain point in their story rather than being the sole focus in a movie. he is responsible for the majority of the important decisions and outcomes either will and/or elizabeth had to deal with, which leaves me to believe that in the bigger picture, POTC was rather their story with jack playing a great part in it.

I like that you barely talk about why 4 and 5 are bad movies and instead you only talk about what makes 1-3 so good. This makes it so your points come through much harder and more sincere because they're not comming from hatered of the new movies, but simply from the dissapointment that they didn't live up to the first 3. And it has nothing to do with nostalgia, because every point you make is legitimate and makes sense. 4 and 5 aren't necessarly bad movies, you can still like them if you want, no one can hold that against you, but you can't deny that they lack the depth of the first 3 movies and quite frankly, that is was most of the audience fell in love with and what made those movies better than "just another blockbuster".

While it certainly isn’t as good as the first three, I’d like to defend 4 a bit. I don’t think it was horrible, on paper the idea that Jack is being used by/is a hostage of Blackbeard is a cool idea, where a cat and mouse game of who can outsmart the other is played. The quest for the fountain of youth also works fairly well, it makes total sense that it exists in the world. The mermaid scene was easily the best in the whole movie, playing up the horrors up the deep that you aren’t going to get away from once you fall in was so cool. Obviously not everything worked but I think it was serviceable. 5 on the other hand was a dumpster fire, why they thought showing jack at his lowest was a good idea is beyond me, he’d earned becoming one of the worlds most notorious pirates by then. Salazar had SO much potential but failed on every front, and the ending was so beyond silly that it hurts

This is how I feel as well. 4 may not be as strong as the first 3 but to me it is still fun to watch. I loved the relationship between Jack and Angelica and while Blackbeard was sadly undermined compared to Beckett and Davy Jones, he still had his moments that made him a threat plus the actor did a great job considering the script he was given. Side characters were also memorable and there were actual jokes and funny moments regardless of how some jokes sometimes were a bit forced. Jack still acted like Jack and the writers knew this and respected that. Compare that to the horrible 5th movie where Jack all of a sudden was dumb and not like Jack at all. None of the new characters were interested and Barbossa and Salazar were the only two to carry the movie. Barbossa was wasted in the end but that was mostly because Geoffrey Rush wanted it to be his final movie. The ending of the 5th movie disrespects the whole lore and story of the trilogy to make a happy ending. While the 4th movie has its lame moments it at least tries to do something interesting with the fountain of youth and does have a decent message of ridding the world of an obsession like the fountain, making the fountain a legend for the modern world (ours). Barbossa’s story in this one was sad and full of revenge which I was rooting for him to win and kill Blackbeard. To me I only watch the trilogy and the 4th movie and ignore the 5th movie. Just my opinion.

@@Wylie288 I wouldn’t say I hate the fifth one. I’m disappointed with it. It has a decent plot and the ideas and the effects and designs used like the ghosts and the colors used are beautiful. The scene with young Jack outsmarting Salazar is my favorite scene in the movie and Barbosa And Salazar make the movie interesting. Plus Salazar actually had some good moments where he was genuinely threatening. Sadly the story was contrived to give Elizabeth and Will a happy ending plus the fact that Will was cursed means he started betraying his role as captain of the Dutchman which would have been nice to see why he suddenly started not doing his duties. There are so many other issues with the fifth movie. I see the potential in it but it was wasted.

4 wasn't too bad, but lacked a) Verbinski's direction and b) returning characters. Luckily, Rossio and Elliott were still able to make the script pretty fun. 5 on the other hand...... it lacked Verbinski and both screenwriters, and so we got a bit of a crap film. I mean, the effects are still really good and there are some exciting set pieces. However, the villain was trash and Jack wasn't his usual self (looks like they tried to spin Depp's private troubles into a more downtrodden Jack Sparrow, which didn't really work). Barbossa was still solid though and the subplot with his lost daughter had potential, but wasn't developed enough. But for me, the biggest crime of 5 was how they cheapened the characters of Will and Elizabeth. 3 ended on a bittersweet note, where their love was limited to one day each year (correct me on that, may be off). But 5 ... 5 just had to retcon the tragic end with the 'super secret magical staff' that sets Will free from the Dutchman. And they teased the return of Davy Jones..... yeah, that's another character arc ruined. :/

The first Pirates came out in Belgium in the summer during a massive heat wave. Everyone felt overheaten. As most non-southern countries in Europe, airco is not that common so the splash of Caribbean cool air breezing through the multiplex airco system was a lucky coincidence. We had the viewing in the early afternoon and I will always remeber when we openend the doors to go out, my girlfriend turned to me and spoke the words "I can't breathe" - miss Swan style. So we bought an ice cream and went back in for a second time.

Davy Jones is obviously a fantastic villain but the Calypso is also a fantastic character and for a black woman in a historical film (for the time) she has so much depth and power that unfortunately wasn’t especially common. I had never stopped to consider why they work, and I love how you put it. They are so honest and sincere. They promise fun pirate action and deliver it, then hit you with great characters and emotional arcs inside of a surprisingly well-realized and well-written screenplay. No playing around or meta-humor, just a damn good couple of movies.

You are absolutely right. I like to imagine the first three movies as the love story of Will and Elizabth, narrated in the crazy pirate universe, by Jack. Jack is essential for the narrating and creating the "spirit" of the franchise, but alone he cannot succed. He needs the more grounded story of Will and Elizabeth to emotionally tie the viewer to the story.

I like the first three the best; I only saw the fourth one once and didn't like it, and I never bothered to watch the fifth (though I might watch any of the Will and Elizabeth scenes). I'm not sure that "Dead Man's Chest" and "At World's End" captured the magic of the first movie, perhaps in part because they were being worked on at the same time, but I still like them. "Curse of the Black Pearl" is my favorite but the initial trilogy is just so much better than the next two.

I don’t dislike 2&3, and I’ve come to enjoy them more as time has gone on, but to me they didn’t have the same tone as the first movie. The curse of the Black Pearl was so experimental and you could tell that they were making it to tell a fun story, and for the most part it’s very grounded and real, skeletal pirates notwithstanding. The first three captured this feeling of there being a big world out there and we were privy to a small section of it, one governor’s daughter, one blacksmith (and good man) and one person who stood outside this society and had the freedom to traverse Port Royal. Barbossa is still my favorite antagonist because he’s a well balanced character that is smart and able to work the crew to his view while still being sympathetic. Also I might just like the first movie the best because when it came out I had gotten a coin from the wreck of the Atocha from my parents and wearing a real shipwrecked coin to school when a movie about cursed pirate coins was popular made every day fun.

After I finished 5 it was one of the few times I wished I could Unsee a movie. It even felt like it was retconning and misunderstanding important story beats. All 4 and 5 made me want to do was go watch 1-3 again so I would have the way they make me feel and the fun I have with them be what was fresh in my mind instead of the weirdly alien vibe that 4 and 5 had going on. I know "vibe" is such a vague term, but like. The original trilogy really do have immaculate vibes. Everything works together to create like a visual, musical, written aesthetic that I will always be nostalgic for. This just made me want to watch 1-3 again even more.

Thank you so much for this beautiful in depth look at the true potc trilogy. All of the points you highlighted are the exact things I am constantly trying to convince everyone of. The first 3 movies were gorgeous and intense and human. Well done on this wonderful tribute and critique!

I loved Barbossa's and Jack's love hate relationship through the movies as well. But I have to agree 4 and 5 were both alot weaker than the first 3.

They are each missing what the other has imo, 4 had great performance by Depp and good writing for Jack, but the story and villain weren't that interesting and too much of the movie took place in a jungle in a row which made the setting boring. 5 had better villain and sort of story and def settings, but Jack's character writing and Depp's acting was way off from what Jack actually is supposed to be like. What both were missing however was Jacks own goal, it both he pretty much got dragged along on someone's else quest, doing absolutely nothing before that and not having his own mission brewing behing their backs like in 1st where he also got dragged along by Will but in reality Jack had his own different quest behind Will's back. In 4th he would have legged it if he could and 5th he just got dragged along to find the trident because it would also help him but the mission was Henry's whose goal was to save his father.

I've always defended the entire original trilogy as well. When a franchise gets more than three movies, by default it starts to become a joke, but in this case the drop in quality for the 4th and 5th movies amplified this effect and even tainted peoples' memories of the 2nd and 3rd ones. I constantly remind people that those first two sequels actually had a lot going for them.

I think the only series that didn't become a joke after 3 movies was Harry Potter. But that's in part that each movie had a near thousand page book to rely on. Even happened to LOTR. I get the hobbit is technically a separate series but it's still a continuation of the original movies story as prequels. The first was ok but the next two were very lackluster in my mind. They had to drum up alot of things that weren't in the book. The third movie was based on 2-3 pages.

I 100 percent agree with that statement all the way. The original trilogy of the pirates of the Caribbean are literally the best trilogy that Disney ever made in the early 2000s. I grew up watching them and I still love watching them every time that I do a marathon of them. 🏴‍☠️ keep a weather eye on the horizon.

For me, the most disappointing part about Pirates 5 is that the curse-breaking story arc could have been really interesting. While some may argue it undermines the importance of Will doing what Davy Jones couldn't (as you mentioned in the video), I think it would have been a natural character motivation for not only Will's son but Elizabeth too. While I don't think a whole new trilogy would have been needed, I think a more fleshed-out narrative with the relationship of Elizabeth and her son's relation to Will while Jack maintaining a similar role that he did in the first three movies could have been a lot more successful. Keeping Salazar as the villain would have been fine too, as he would've had his own reasons to seek the trident, and honestly, his character was just really well executed in the film we got. Of course, I'm no film writer, but I do think the writers of 4 & 5 still had a lot of potential to create another good film(s), but ultimately just dropped the ball hard for a paycheck. That tangent aside, amazing video! Glad to see so many others enjoy the Pirates trilogy as much as I do!

I agree with everything in the video except the scene with the chandelier in Stranger Tides. The movie shows how Jack looks around and places everything where it needs to be for his escape. Then he proceeded to act like an idiot to get out of his chains, drop a napkin to later trip a guard, use the chandelier to swing onto the ledge, all according to his plan.

That is true! He’s definitely being as clever and resourceful as ever (unlike the bank scene in 5, which seemed like it was all an accident and luck). I was just going for the point that I didn’t care as much about the story anymore, so it was just action for action’s sake. But it is a fair point you make!

"Davy Jones can rival Steppenwolf" Hel no, even today Davy looks far better than Shitenwolf. There's no 'rival', it's just outright defeat.

I used to love Pirates when I was little; I watched the trilogy over and over again. I came back to them recently as an adult and was blown away with how flawlessly they still held up, both plot-wise and humor-wise - hell, I'd say I even enjoyed them more now because I could recognize and appreciate the broader underlying themes

Dude you put how I feel about these movies into words so incredibly well, thank you!! The Pirates Trilogy (and I refuse to call it anything else) was basically my childhood, it had been so defining for me as a person when I was young, and it still holds a very special place in my heart. While I think 4 is okay to watch and has at least some redeeming qualities, I still wish they'd have left the franchise alone after the (bittersweet but perfect) conclusion that was the third one. As to the fifth... I deny its existence. I recently talked to a friend about it and realized how incredibly angry I still am about it, even after many years. But to leave on a positive note: I love to see so many like-minded people gathered here in the comment section, uniting under their love for these movies! 😄💕 I'm just scrolling through liking almost every comment, it feels so nice.

Glad to see some pirate love here! Personally I do think the healthy mix of realism and fantasy of the first film was lost even in the first set of sequels. But for sure there's still PLENTY to admire about those! I do even wish there would be a sixth and further films. But taken a bit more seriously again; with such similar depth from that original trilogy. There's so much that could yet be done with that world!

@@RobertsThoughts Child brains are the best! Drop the cynicism; and just enjoy the good stuffs!! :-D And for sure, the PotC trilogy *does* hold up. It's not the way *I* would've made the sequels. But they're still prrreeeeetty darn good in their own rights. Plus, I *did* get the chance to make my own imagination for the sequels a reality too. Just look up "Pirates of the Caribbean: New Horizons". ;-)

It always annoys me that people hate on DMC and AWE. People tend to lump them in with other ‘bad’ sequels like The Matrix or whatever, but Pirates 2 and 3 are legit great. The story is fantastic and the action scenes are superb. The CGI even holds up all these years later. In sum, thanks for this video! I really enjoyed it!

One complaint that made no sense to me is when people say Jack was only smart in the first movie while the it's more of a focus in the first film jack still does smart stuff in 2 and 3 like how he manipulates norrington against will in Dead man chest and how he tricks Davy Jones into revealing the key to his chest in at world's end

This was a really well made video, about a really well made trilogy. I'd take The Pirates Trilogy, The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, & The Star Wars Prequel Trilogy of the 2000s over the MCU of the 2010s any day
(OLD) Why we'll never see anything like The Lord of the Rings Trilogy again
