I also love shutter mode. Especially capturing birds, manual mode is irritating and sometimes focusing and exposure problem araising. I missed many beautiful bird shots when shooting manual mode. So I Changed to shutter mode and taking images. Initially, 1/320 speed I set. But focusing issues and images are mostly under exposed. Changing to 1/1000 leads aperture not suitable. No other way. So I Boost ISO from 100 to 3200. After that somewhat managed. Around 80 images were shot, sadly 4 images are properly exposed (that images' are very nice after croping and editing). First time I captured fastly moving birds. Really interesting and thrilling.

@franksfiddle9031

@@photogenius Thanks Paul .. I was wondering which mode you might walk around with your camera set to ... for example (sorry it's a bit long) my wife and I went for a walk along a trail that we have walked often and which we've never really seen any wildlife on ... like ever! I had my camera with me and as we entered the woods, which are pine trees and fairly light with the obvious shadowing, I took a couple of photos to set the settings so I could get the light about right in case I saw something on a tree etc ... we set off and a little way in there was a small group of athletes doing some sprint training on the soft ground with their coach. We walked past as they were taking a short break and as we got to the end of their 60 metre mark I heard them start to sprint, first one and then the second .. I turned, pressed the autofocus and snapped each of them. The photos were ok, not too dark but I'd set the shutter at 100 (it was a canon 50mm) and apperture at f8 with ISO on auto, so as you might expect there was blurring on the legs and pumping arms, but their torsos and heads were fairly sharp. OK .. .so the problem was I didn't know which setting to quickly change and was about to change shutter speed but realised it would be too dark and I had around 3 seconds to make the first decision and then another 3 or 4 for the second photo, the problem being of course the time I had to make the decision. So, after all that, if you were walking through an ok-ish light and hoping to be able to react to something, what mode would you have your camera in?

Paul: You increased the ISO because you didn't want to increase the shutter speed because the shutter speed was your priority, correct?
@sclogse1
@sclogse1 3 жыл бұрын
Decrease the shutter speed. One would increase the Aperature opening with a fixed (set) shutter speed when you needed more light. Or, you'd raise the gain on your i.s.o. to a higher number.

Now that we know the basics of , aperture , shutter and iso , could help in giving us example of how to use them . Like when we should use high aperture , high iso or low shutter speed . So that we could imbibe them when we take our photos

Hello Paul...Jerry here...Just now watching the video of Shutter Priority. I shoot with the Canon 90d using one of three lens. the 24-105/the 18-35 or the 100-400. I might even use a 50mm. but my question is....In TV Mode on the camera with the shutter speed of 1/100 as suggested in video or 1/1600 as i saw in another video, is the lens then set in AF mode so it continues to focus and can the AF mode be set to HS continuous? I have loved the videos you put out and wished when i was working in PNG, that i had the time to come to you is AUS to do one of the walking photo lessons. Thank you for the reply
@photogenius
@photogenius 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jerome. Auto Focus mode works independently of shutter speed. So (if I understand the question correctly), yes you can use whatever shutter speed you like, you can set the AF to whichever mode you like (One Shot, AI-Servo or MF) and you can also set the Drive mode to continuous. Thanks for watching.

Hi, Paul. Great videos as always. I'm curious... a lot of cameras you are showing how to use look to have some sort of glass element on their ends. Is this for the lens protection, or are they polarizers? If it's a polarizer, do you leave them on all the time? When are they taken off? I tried to use one at the beach with my nephew, but all the photos came out rather dark and out of focus.

Hello, I am new to all this and I just got a Nikon D3500 camera kit, which I am very excited to use. My main interest is taking great photographs of my children and family. I want to take nice indoor photos using natural light and I also plan to set up an indoor area to take photos with using artificial lighting with soft boxes and such. Can you please give me some recommendations of what settings to set my camera on in order to get some crisp, clear but blurred background portrait photos. THANK YOU!
@photogenius
@photogenius 5 жыл бұрын
Firstly thanks for watching my video Kimberley - I appreciate the support. I often get asked the questions "What settings should I use" so let's address this one first. The camera settings you use will be based largely on how much light is available at the time, so for example if you take a photo in your kitchen in the middle of the day, then a photo in the late afternoon in the same space the settings will be different because the light would have changed. It is therefor impossible to give you exact settings but I can make some recommendations... My first recommendation is to start using the cameras Manual modes, and a good one to start you off would be aperture priority (A) on the camera mode dial. Watch my videos on Aperture, Shutter speed and ISO so you get a good understanding of the features and how to use them. For blurry backgrounds you will need to understand 'Depth of field' - of course I've published a video on this and I hope it helps you : kzfaq.info/get/bejne/sJOIjdR9rNudeJ8.html The key is to keep practising - no one becomes a pro overnight, so take lots of photos, make mistakes and learn from them and have fun with your new camera. Please consider subscribing. Paul @ Photo Genius 😀

how does a Nikon D3400 compare to say an iphone x ? is it worth picking up this model or would i be best going for more higher end model?
@photogenius
@photogenius 6 жыл бұрын
Well sadly you can't make phone calls on the D3400!! BUT because the sensor is much larger in a DSLR compared to any smartphone the image quality will be much better, especially in low light. Of course the more "high end" the camera the better the functions and untimely the image quality, but the D3400 is a great place to start. I love my iPhone and take photos with it everyday, but a DSLR camera will beat it in terms of quality and flexibility - just make sure you stay out of Auto, watch lots of my videos and learn how to get the most from it. Best wishes, Paul @ Photo Genius 😀

I did a shoot at a surf spot half a mile out to sea from land with a 300ml lens and monopod in shutter priority in good light.I chose 1/1000 shutter speed/auto iso and only one sequence of my shoots came out sharp.I was very dissapointed as this spot only has good conditions once a year or so.I had the camera image stabilzation on which was wrong i think and my monopod was a bit lighweight i think,i feel like the camera could have been sturdier.What do you think i could have done to get better results?

May I ask about FPS, but not with video. Some cameras have a very high FPS for shooting birds. Canon 80 d only has 10 FPS. Not many when I’m trying to shoot birds in flight. How can I increase this number?
@photogenius
@photogenius 3 жыл бұрын
No the frames per second is set, you cannot increase. Of course how fast your shutter is opening and closing will impact the speed - so the faster the shutter the better for birds in flight.

Here's my recommendation for you. Assuming the event is indoors and the light is not good. Camera in S mode (Shutter priority) Set shutter to 1/500 Set ISO to 1600 Camera will adjust aperture (f number for you) Experiment with faster shutter speeds if light allows. Hi. So I took photos last weekend of my son's football game. I did use the TV mode on my Canon, but turned up my shutter speed to 1250. What I noticed when I got home and looked at the information about all of my photos is that it didn't take the photos at 1250 speed - even though I had it set at 1250 - it automatically decided to take them at different speeds ranging from 400-600 and the aperture around 5 and 400 iso. This was a very sunny day, so I was confused as to why it did that. Any suggestions?

When using AP I’ve been told you need only to pic your F stop. ISO shutter speed is done for you. (your vid) Using TV you had your iso set to 400. Why didn’t you have set your iso if you ISO auto?

Without k knowing anything about the camera settings or modes you are using I cannot comment on why you're getting poor images from the Nikon. I use both Canon and Nikon cameras and they can all take great photos if set up and used correctly.

As the video suggest, start with Shutter priority mode and select a fast shutter speed to freeze the movement. Keep watching the videos, learning and practising. Thanks for watching.

Depending on the camera and settings ISO may be changed by the camera. This feature can be turned off.
