Star Fox Adventures: To this day, this GameCube title is still remembered by many for being disappointing, uninspired and arguably a disgrace to previous titles in the series. But can it really have been that bad? Today, I'll be delving into Dinosaur Planet, digging up my experiences with this game and explaining what exactly made it so special to me. I'm FibreOpticBroadbean and this is Why I Love Star Fox Adventures!
Music used:
- Intro fanfare: Complete Extra Honeycomb (Banjo-Kazooie)
- The Great Sea - The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
- Thorntail Hollow - Starfox Adventures
- Cape Claw - Starfox Adventures
- Cloudrunner Fortress - Star Fox Adventures
- Thorntail Hollow (Night) - Star Fox Adventures

It's nice to see someone who thinks Star Fox Adventures is underrated. Yeah it has it's fair share of problems as it wasn't originally a Star Fox sequel. I mean, the ideas and some of the executions of what the game presented is pretty cool. Cool enough that I think deserves Star Fox a proper reimagining / remake (seeing how Nintendo literally remade SF64's story 2-3 times).

@@Fobb sounds great. However if I could make a few suggestions for the hypothetical remake it would be to not reduce Krystal to some damsel in distress again. Instead have her team up with Fox and Tricky and have her go through her own character arc, like finding out the truth about the death of her parents just as the narrative text said in the original. Also have her and Fox develop their relationship from the ground up. Have them get to know and trust each other as friends and comrades first before falling in love. I’m not saying Fox can’t crush on her at first sight like he did in the original or have him be a flustered adorable mess when he talks to her, but it has to go beyond that and we the audience have to believe it. Also make General Scales the one and only Big Bad and leave Andross out all together. Or if you absolutely HAVE to have Andross in the game at least insert him into the story organically. Make it known that while Scales is a threat, there is someone behind the scenes pulling the strings so that his reveal doesn’t feel like it came out of left field. And PLEASE let us get our long awaited fight with Scales!
@Fobb

@@MaggieCandy999 Those are some great suggestions and would definitely enhance the game a ton. Krystal had a criminally small role in the original, so it'd definitely be great to see her have a bigger part in the story and game as a whole. Also for sure, we absolutely need that Scales fight 😂

Star Fox Adventures was never a bad game, it just wasn't your traditional Star Fox game, and I'm speaking from experience here, I am a huge fan of Star Fox 64 and to this day it is still one of my favorite games of all time, and when Star Fox Adventures came out, I was hesitant on it but when I actually played it, I fell in love with it

Great video, Fribre. My parents bought me Adventures upon it's release when I was 9 - the experience of this game left an indelible sparkle on my childhood memories. Beautiful music and sound design, awe-inspiring scenery and graphics. The voice acting, though cheesy, was perfect for an early 2000's Nintendo game. As a child, I would struggle with some of the tasks and trials, but I always kept coming back to try and unite Fox and Krystal. SnowHorn Wastes, Cape Claw, Thorntail Hollow... I spent hours exploring and relaxing in these areas. The music was superb and the day/night cycle just brought a really cosy feel to it all. Loved the sound of the water and wildlife. Historically, I've rated Adventures as my favourite game of all time - and that's a statement that still stands to this day. Thank you for the memories and this great video.

Thanks a bunch for your kind words! Everything you said here is spot-on - there was something about this game that just made it feel magical to me, be it the worlds, the music, the visuals or a combination of all of them. I'll always remember this game fondly and I'm glad I'm not alone in that viewpoint 👍

Really like how you drew a link between the visuals and music. There's a reason this is probably the most nostalgic game to me and it's because the atmospheres created by that marriage between visuals and music is truly fantastic. The whole game has this dreamy magical feel that really immerses me. I feel like if they just delayed it for another year of development, fixed the rushed ending, replaced Andross fight with proper Scales fight, and improved the combat a bit, it could have been a really incredible game.

You hit the nail on the head, it's so easy to get engrossed in this game's environments. I love the themes of Thorntail Hollow (day & night), Snowhorn Wastes and Cape Claw specifically - the day theme of Thorntail Hollow feels almost warm and relaxing in a way, it really makes Thorntail Hollow feel like this safe haven that you can always come back to. The night theme, coupled with the beautiful sunset and the starry night sky has a feeling of reflection around it, almost as if you're looking back on everything you accomplished during the day. Then there's the Snowhorn Wastes theme, which has this sense of adventure and exploration into the unknown, which is really fitting considering the snowy environment that it accompanies. While it wasn't perfect, this game will always have that special, magical feeling.

Excellent video. This one was a huge part of my childhood. I was shocked to find that the internet didn’t consider it a masterpiece like I always had. Maybe those of us who experienced Star Fox for the first time via Adventures are more open to it as a stand alone game? I think it’s right up there with Mario Sunshine. I never beat it, but to me it was just that; an ADVENTURE. The world felt endless. Still does.

When I first played this game, I'd already been exposed to what people thought of it on the internet, but it always just fascinated me. One day I just took the plunge, played it for the first time and instantly loved it, even having played Star Fox 64 as a kid. I think the key was, like you said, going into it with a more open mind, without any expectations or pre-conceived opinions. Thanks for watching!

Those who followed the game's progress in the Nintendo Magazines back when it was Dinosaur Planet as well as being fans of RARE games during the SNES and N64 era. Those are the people who originally appreciated StarFox Adventures especially when hearing about RARE being sold to Microsoft shortly after the game was released. The fans of StarFox 64 however, I can understand perfectly how they were disappointed and upset about this game not being the same as what they played on the N64. But at the time, I knew being a RARE fan, I really loved this game despite the flaws especially after so many cancelled N64 games I remember reading about years before 2002. So I was more thankful that this game was released at all considering Dinosaur Planet could have been just another canceled N64 game just like Dragon Sword or even that Young Olympians game that also showed some promise. And RARE was known for their long development for their games so I was even appreciating for their effort for how beautiful StarFox Adventures looked.

I loved starfox adventures. Since I've never played the N64 of starfox (Or it's other remakes) and only Played the SNES. To see andross back and scarred and detailed! It was an amazing surprise! Wonder how he got so battered as a kid! Now that I'm older, starfox adventures is still one of my favorite games I love to replay every single time! It always feels refreshing, never the same, but new! I'm glad to have gotten it back then and following up after assault, best sequels ever! New, fresh and exciting! No offense to the lyalt wars...but it's been over done way too much. I think this is why I appreciate adventures and assault more! It expanded on the characters more and did something else that made it emersive to me! But I love this video! Thank you for sharing the love of this lovely game! 💖

Finally, someone who doesnt throw shit at this game. I know there was many things lost in the game...but at least it expanded Star Fox's Universe and concept to different types of gamestyles instead of one. I love the rail-shooting stages in 64 and Assault but i also love the concept of Fox getting out of the Arwing and fighting on foot. This game also sparked my creativity alongside Star Fox Assault. Aside from SF Adventures there were other underrated games which looked amazing at their time, Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy for example, the textures were great, the character desgins were so cool and memorable (actually, the designer was the same guy that designed the Trollhunter series characters).

StarFox Adventures remains one of my top 5 Gamecube games simply for the fact on how much mystery and allure is attracted to me. It was a game that my mother bought me at the age of 8 to which it released pretty close to my birthday in the US (only 4 days apart). Areas like Capeclaw and Walled City had remained some of my favorite areas to explore and wonder. I had also since been going through the leaked Dinosaur Planet build (through the DinoMod patch) mostly to check out of what could had been and so far it has been an interesting ride to say the least. More than often I wish people can give it a second chance nowadays compared to initial reactions and see for what it is and not rubbing it off "because it's not a StarFox game"

StarFox Adventures has always been one of (if not in fact) my most favorite StarFox games in the series. It was a special game that I've played in my childhood. For it's graphic wise, I feel like it really aged well for me in my life by its beautiful atmosphere through its parts of the planet that made me never lose my nostalgic feel towards it. I feel like that was one of its strongest benefits it has ever offered. But I agree how the story wasn't as great from how it turned out. Especially since I feel like during the process of it towards the end was disappointing how it was wasted potential when the main antagonist's fight was just... scrapped out that basically destroys the purpose and conflict of this adventure. I mean, I understand how they were in a rush at this time due to their deadline which sucks since deadlines are biggest challenges to face in releasing games, but still we could've at least had his fight included while there's time so that way it wouldn't have been all wasted. But ah well :( Which is one of the reasons why it would be my biggest desire is to have this game to be remastered to improve the flaws the original had and include not only the fight but a LOT of things that were taken out of the final product for its release (like the voice lines the VAs put in for our characters and unused tracks provided). Sometimes I even really wish Dinosaur Planet could've been like an actual real game to be released like on a Switch as an example instead of just being scrapped off as if it never even existed. But again, this seems like an impossible dream of me to wish for. At least I can just wait and hope for what holds in the future. But aside from all the flaws, it never fails to be an enjoyable and scenic game I've played in my life.

It's honestly quite incredible how well this game has aged considering that it's 20 years old now! I would absolutely love to see a remaster/remake of this game, it would be so cool to see some of the ideas that never saw the light of day. A dev build of the original Dinosaur Planet leaked and it gives a lot of insight into why SFA has a lot of the problems it does. For example, why do you have to go to every area twice for two seemingly separate quests? Because they WERE two separate quests, done by two separate characters. Why does the scene where you first find Tricky seem to come out of nowhere? Because that's where Saber's story started, there was nothing before that. It's clear the rushed transition caused a lot of problems for them, and I commend how well they did despite that, although I must say they didn't need to do Krystal dirty and write her out like that. That was completely unnecessary...

There are tons of great things I like about SFA. My only issue is that it really should've been its own thing like it was originally planned to be. The actual Star Fox elements are okay, but still feel tacked on compared to everything else. It's a great game in its own right, but I don't see Nintendo doing anything with the characters or world from the game anytime soon. The Dinosaur Planet N64 ROM shows a lot about the development and the intended story they had. It was less about the reward money and more about Krystal, Sabre (changed to Fox), and Randorn trying to get back home while helping the peaceful dinosaur tribes and preventing the destruction of an entire star system. It's worth checking out if you enjoyed the final product, but wanted to see what it could've been like if it was disconnected from the Star Fox franchise. Just replace Fox with Sabre, and replace Corneria with Animus. There is a patch that replaces Fox's model with Sabre's and adds debug mode to explore the unfinished game without worrying about softlocks or invisible walls that impede your progress. It also fixes certain crashes and other broken elements that essentially end the game early like not loading certain areas properly or not even loading them at all.

I appreciate the praise that Star Fox Adventures gets. Overall it's just a dream come true since Jurassic Park, with dinosaurs, and Star Fox come out around the scene year! I mostly see it as a Metroid clone rather than Zelda because it has a Sci-Fi feel. And it's widely over hated especially by today's standards! Same deal with super Mario Bros 2! It was definitely Rareware's last hurrah, and it should be appreciated as such. Never even heard of its prototype... Also Star Fox Assault is ten times worse!

I just re-played this game for the first time in ages. It is really REALLY minimalistic when it comes to puzzles and game progression. I remembered it as a game that is somewhat comparable to Zelda but to be completely honest, it feels like Zelda for little kids because the solutions are no brainers most of the time. But... it is also a really light hearted game. Still my 2nd favorite Star Fox game after the N64 version. Assault tried to return to the original format but that game totally sucked in my opinion. If they made a Star Fox Adventures part 2 and maybe increase the challenge a little bit, I would so buy it....

I loved this game who cares that it wasn't a Star Fox game I didn't buy it thinking it was going to be a traditional Star Fox game as I didn't even like those I bought it knowing it was a 3D action adventure platformer and it's better than most of its contemporaries

This game is why i was do disappointed in the visual style of Zelda Wind Waker (even though it was a fantastic game). Still, Twilight Princess certainly delivered. In the wait for Wind Waker, this game was a perfectly acceptable Zelda clone to fill my time. And i still love to play it from time to time.

The dungeons are kinda cheap and there are hardly any real challenges in this game. But the charme still shines through. I wish this game got a remake (not just a remaster) in which they fixed all these issues, take some (better) inspirations from 3D Zelda games, give Krystal more to do and ofc add a good boss fight with Scales.

It does look really good. I think the thing is: the wasted potential of what could've been a game with richer lore and a much better story. It went from being a new franchise to turning into just one of Fox missions.

If this wasnt a starfox game it would be good but it has the starfox name slapped on it which ruins it and leaves a sour entry in the series as a whole. Game looks and sounds great so not much reason as to why this game couldn't stand on its own without the name. There are some flaws i think can be overlooked whereas some cannot.

I’ve never before heard an English person use the word “oftentimes”. Over here we already have a word - “often” - which works absolutely fine without the “times”. Antonyms don’t need to be consistent, I.e. “sometimes” and “often”.

While I do realize that Adventures has it's fair share of issues I cant help but like the game. At the very least it showed that ground combat and exploration could work in a Star Fox game, and I don't want that idea to be abandoned. If properly integrated Adventures style gameplay could mesh well with a traditional Star Fox game if it was given in small doses of the course of the entire game.

The on-foot segments definitely have a lot of potential for the series, it's a bit of a shame we'll probably never see them return in future instalments.
