Something to keep in mind - the 100mm canon version, which can be adapted to sony E, has electronic aperture coupling. This means that even when using F11, you can focus at F2.8 and the lens will only close down when taking the shot if desired, making focussing much easier at super close macro distances.

Hi Micael - An excellent video, and I've seen you develop as a macro photographer, and I really like the way you've settled on this simplified approach, and are giving such excellent advice. I've spent lots of time working on light modification, and actually invented the concept of "concave diffusers" now used all around the world. Although truth be told I now tend to often use quite simple light modifiers and lightweight flashes. The cheap commercial diffuser you are using does give excellent lighting and I first used one a long time back. One advantage of the 60mm over the 100mm is the closer working distance does tend to give better lighting from the flash, as the closer the diffuser is to the subject, the more diffuse the light. I've not used either Laowa lens yet, as I still use DSLRs. I agree with you about the Canon MP-E 65mm 1-5x macro, which I've been using for about 12 years now. It's a great lens, but it's very limiting when you come across a butterfly or dragonfly, and have to either change lenses, carry to set ups (which I have) or just miss the opportunity. So a lot of the time now I use the Canon 60mm f2.8 USM with an extension tube. www.flickr.com/photos/steb1/

Yeah it is fun to experiment with different solutions for light and diffusion, but this simple setup is the one that has given me the best results and most convenient photo walks yet :)
@stephenbarlow24935 жыл бұрын
@@MicaelWidell - Yes, after lots of experience I've come to the same conclusion, simple is best. I've always done photo walks, and you never know what you're going to encounter. So a flash set up as to be simple, versatile i.e. at various distances and magnifications, and give reliable light.

Good video as ever Micael. I'd be interested to hear why you use a camera mounted flash with a modifier, rather than a macro ring flash. Keep up the good work.
@MicaelWidell5 жыл бұрын
Macro ring flashes never gave me good results, probably because the flash is too close to the subject, making it hard to diffuse in a proper way. The images just don’t look beautiful. The light looks too industrial and harsh. Also a ring flash is clumsy and makes the camera front heavy. And expensive.

@MicaelWidell9 ай бұрын
They are pretty similar. I would say the Laowa is perhaps slightly better built - no oil leakage and the aperture scale is correct. But in terms of what you get for the money, the Pergear is better value, at least if you get the mk2 version. The Laowa also has distorsion - none of them are great for scanning negatives.

I also, based on your recommendation (Yes, I am a fan of your channel and listen to your advice) got the GODOX V350 Flash that I set to 1/16, yet all my macro photos are very very dark even when taking them outside. I am using a flash diffuser (not one you recommended) but I doubt that's the issue.. Any advice or tips. When I put the flash on TTL it works great, but then I can not focus stack and I really want to try that

The only thing I can think of is that your diffuser is too thick or made in a way so that the flash light does not reach the subject very well. Anyway, just increase iso to 200 and you should still get nice photos.

So is the answer simply to multiply the magnification on the barrel by 1.6 if using an APS-C camera? Thanks.
@MicaelWidell Жыл бұрын
It is made for APS-C but works well on full frame for macro. It has 2x magnification. But sure, 2x on aps-c is similar to 3x on full frame, when it comes to image framing (pretty logical when you think about it - when you crop in on a photo, as a crop sensor does, you get a larger subject in the frame)

@@MicaelWidell Thanks Micael, so I guess the multiplication figures on the lens relate to full-frame.

I have an Canon EOS R. Is it ok with the Laowa 60mm EF-mount using Rf to Ef adapter, or do you think it’s better to go for the 100mm that is available in RF-mount?
@MicaelWidell3 жыл бұрын
Doesn’t really matter. The 100mm is a bit heavier and can focus to infinity. Otherwise the image quality will be pretty much exactly the same.
@wenjiun882 жыл бұрын
what about laowa 85mm vs 100mm?
@MicaelWidell2 жыл бұрын
Get the 85mm if your most important priority is low weight and size. Get the 100mm if you are okay with a heavy and big lens which gives you wider max aperture in return. I would pick the 85mm.
@squatch004 жыл бұрын
Will this crop in on a full frame camera since it's designed as APS-C? (EOS R in my case) Awesome video btw, I'm considering this or the 100mm currently :)
@MicaelWidell4 жыл бұрын
As I tried to explain in the video, but maybe failed at, you can use this lens anywhere from 2x magnification to around 3 meters distance without vignetting. Farther away than 3 meters and you will get a dark vignette.

@@MicaelWidell No you explained it fine; I just confuse myself or overthink things sometimes! Thanks for the response

Hello Micael! Other than weight, what would be the main difference with 100mm? Does the working distance is different?
@MicaelWidell4 жыл бұрын
I didn't test it because to me it is not important, but yes, typically the working distance increases with increased focal length.

I have a 1:1 70mm sigma macro lense, I get great results with it, but I am tempted to buy one of these Laowa 2:1 lenses. Having a 70mm, what would you recommend? the Laowa 60mm or the 100mm version? My sigma, fully extened at 1:1 is 19cm long, I think the 100mm is shorter than that right?

Buy whichever you want. I explained the differences in this video and which I like the best.

This is an apsc lens but it covers full frame for close focusing as I try to explain in this video. So I get 24mp photos.

5:39 - Could you please tell me a bit more about Kew Gardens…is it a good spot for insect macro and worth a journey for us Londoners?

It is the biggest botanical garden in Europe I think. Or one of the biggest. It has extremely many different flowers and plants, which draws a lot of insects. So it is a nice location to do macro photography :)

You can't compare them as they are for different magnification ranges. They are both equally great for what they are for. I answer this question more in depth here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gJ2koL1jmMvMc5c.html

@MOAB-UT2 жыл бұрын
Not sure, test it but I heard it is not necessary. Have you tried it out yet- what is your opinion? (since this post is now 2 years old) I just spoke with a lens "expert" about this today. He said if you use a FOCUS RAIL on a tripod and a remote shutter or delay shutter setting. Sometimes certain features can make things worse and not always better. If handheld it probably would help though.

Hi Micael thank you for the great content would you still pick the 60mm over the 65mm for a Sony A7iii
@MicaelWidell4 жыл бұрын
Yes and the reason is simple: The 65mm does not work on full frame, it doesn't cover the sensor.

My eyes are set over one of the 2 that will soon find a way to my home but my mind is not yet set on which!!!! Reason: My favorit FL is 135 on FF. So 100mm seems more there but 60mm is much lighter, neater, cuter, etc etc. Hey Micael can you tell me which one is sharper and has overall better IQ? That might make the final trigger release.

Is this still your fav lens? because i saw some newer video you use laowa 65mm , not this 60mm one.

Hello Micael, do you know the exact weight of the Laowa 60mm and 100mm? In my online research I found that the 60mm weights 500gramms and the 100mm about 640gramms. Thats not much more lightweight is it? Or is the data I found wrong? I really consider buying one of them; if the 60mm is just 140gramms lightweighter than the 100mm, I would go with the 100mm :) Peace and Love :)

Do you have the Sony 90mm macro? I just got it and starting to shoot insects I would love to see what kind of results you get with it or that how do you shoot with that lens? Im having lots of trouble atm with the focus area since it is so frigging small...

are you using AF? for macro you have to use MF. No auto focusing works with small insects.
