Dr. Cellini

Күн бұрын

So about 8months ago I posted a video about what grosses me out as a doctor. I wanted to make a light-hearted video and talk about the lesser talked about things in medicine. My intention was to relate with other healthcare workers with similar experiences! We always talk about it with each other in and outside of work, but why not relate to more people around the world! We deal with a lot in healthcare and just wanted that video to be fun, however some people took it the complete wrong way and left some pretty mean comments. I don't really care what people say about me, but I wanted to use this video as a way to show my intention of the video and talk about it more! Also, I have a special announcement at the beginning of the video :)

I don’t know what human actually enjoys poop, pee, and vomit. And honestly, as an interventional radiologist you now no longer need to clean up any of these body fluids. Well done doc!

I guess hair stylists shouldn’t cut hair if they hate seeing dandruff. Or plumbers shouldn’t be plumbers because they hate seeing poop. Every profession has something they hate seeing. These people need to get over it.

Man, people are tough! I’m with you, we all have those one or two things that get to them in the med field. I survived a 43 year year nursing career, and I still had difficulty with certain things. For me, the sound of retching or expectorating sputum, makes me want to gag! Not the body fluids themselves, but the sound. The smell of gangrene or gas gangrene is another. At one point, I worked on a vascular thoracic unit, and saw ( and smelled) my share of horrific, non-healing vascular wounds..definitely high on my list, and even more so when said wounds are crawling with thousands of flesh-eating maggots! My point is exactly the same as yours- no matter how much it grossed me out, my patients never knew it. Am I guilty of perhaps tucking an alcohol pad inside the corner of my mask to cover the smell? I’ll leave that up to the reader. And never once did it stop me from giving what I (hope) was professional, empathetic, and compassionate care. Indeed, my heart went out to these folks, because of the suffering they were enduring because of their conditions! Oh, and one more thing on my list….long, dirty fingernails and toenails, with who know what caked underneath. You’ve been harshly and unfairly judges by those trolls, who really don’t know anything about you, and how you do your job. You learn early on when you work in the medical field to grow a Teflon layer of skin….nothing sticks to Teflon. Keep doing what you do. And congratulations on passing your board certifications. Besides my BSN, I held certifications in both Med-Surg/Gerontology, and Oncology. It’s no small feat to pass those exams. I retired a little over a year ago, and this year when renewals came around, I made the decision to let my license and certifications lapse, closing that chapter of my life. It was bittersweet for me, but I had a good run and a great career, and you will too!

There’s probably a ton of *terrible* medical professionals out there I guess, me being one of them. I worked in critical care and dialysis my entire career, I loved my job and my patients, but I’m still aversed by the smell of bloody stool! Not a one pt ever knew that, though, as I maintained my professionalism. Those of us in the medical field totally understand where you’re coming from. Just ignore the others!

You just jump right in and do it. So, again congratulations Doctor.

Congrats! I think people essentially want robots as doctors. You normalizing this discussion about things, that are very natural to the human condition, is very important and I appreciate that. This is only scratching the surface on normalizing the fact that doctors are humans. Many people seem to be ignorant; do people really think that doctors never get grossed out by anything? Lots of people want to keep doctors in this small box; so that they should just treat patients and that's it, no emotion, no empathy etc. But what happens with those same people who want an empathic doctor, who cares for them, and goes the extra mile for them, or doesn't stop until they figure out what's wrong and come to a conclusion with their possible diagnosis? All this isn't going to happen if the doctor is a robot, I am glad you are normalizing this big issue :)

You’re a champ. When I worked as a unit secretary I once answered a call light that a patient’s family put on because the patient vomited. I was already nauseous in the first trimester of my pregnancy at the time. The smell totally overcame me and I thought I had a face of stone but the patient’s family was like “are you okay? You kinda look like you’re going to pass out”. 😬 I’m not cut out for patient care. If you have a true face of stone it’s impressive 👏

Congratulations on passing your final exams 👏 it must feel good to have that behind you. I agree that most healthcare workers have certain things they have difficulty with but as you said, the patients won’t have any idea about that if you are professional. I can’t imagine getting through your training unless you suck it up, otherwise someone who was training you along the way would have mentioned it. You seem like a nice guy and I wouldn’t mind you as my doctor if I needed your particular services. People in the comments can be so mean, negative and hurtful. I have had a couple of health instances in my life that were messy but no one that treated me made me feel bad about it and I’m sure they weren’t having fun but they kept it professional. I enjoy your channel…keep doing you 😊

I live in another state, so I unfortunately won't get the opportunity to be your patient. I am now subscribed and plan on watching more videos. Started with "How I memorized everything". Maybe fellow colleagues, who lived in frat houses may be more comfortable with vomit. However I highly doubt they were up at 5am studying like you, much less condescending their notes to one page to make sure they grasp the material like you and your study buddy did. I just had major surgery and am on day 3 of recovery, listening to your top 7 video, was very comforting. Yes it does show that you ( and all Doctors) are human, and this side of Heaven, the bodies we live in can be pretty 🤢 gross at times. Thank you for your commitment to your field, Congratulations on passing your Final Exam and Boards. I work with 3 year olds, so my language most days is very simple 😌. Wishing you a very Merry Christmas 🎄 and a long Successful Career!

I just want to say that your videos give me so much encouragement as an undergraduate student who has dreams of being a physician. You embody the exact personality and charisma that I think every procedural/surgical specialty needs. Perspective is always hard. Wonderful video Dr. Cellini I can’t understand how people can think that the people in the medical Feld are not disturbed when you for en example have vomit all over you . But I can understand that you don’t want your caretaker to think that you are disgusting but I can almost promise that all physicians, nurses and all other people in the medical Feld don’t think YOU are disgusting it’s just the (Tex: vomit )that disturbs them and nothing else And congratulations on passing your exams hope you are proud over your shelf 👍

As a patient, the only thing that still grosses me out, and it's more like something that makes my skin crawl, is when a phlebotomist or nurse or whoever wipes an area of my skin with an alcohol wipe before stabbing me with a needle. I'm fine with needles. I've literally had IVs/blood taken THOUSANDS of times. It's the alcohol wipes.

I'm a pediatric nurse practitioner - these negative comments are CRAZY! I definitely get grossed out by a number of things. That doesn't make me devoid of the knowledge, compassion, or empathy required to do what I do every day. I've worked as a floor nurse, in the primary care setting and now as a hospitalist specialized in pediatric gene/onc and have yet to meet a SINGLE person who enjoys those aspects of the jobs. Those things are NOT what make the job worth while and it's not at all what keeps me going back every shift ...

The one thing I realize here everyone who wrote these comments don’t work in the medical field. Not one person who works in medicine says I love when a patient vomits on me or I get their poop on my pants and smell like poop all day. Thank you for always being honest. It’s more about lack of knowledge from these commenters. It’s comparable to a telemarketer saying gosh I love when someone, screams, yells and curses at me, it’s the best! Every job has something that isn’t fun, you just brought awareness to it.

I am an RN. I have been elbow deep in poop and many other body fluids for almost 40 years. I have worked a respiratory step down floor where people hack and spit all day long. I have seen just about everything from open heart surgery to the burn unit in my career. The one thing that I cannot tolerate to this day whether it is a patient, my children or my grandchildren is vomit. I once had someone roll over in their bed, pull open the pocket on my uniform and vomit right into it and down the front of me. That nearly ended my career right then and there. So I guess I am a terrible nurse, terrible mother and a terrible grandmother too!

I was rotating with my psych resident who was doing her medicine rotation and we saw a patient that had declined very quickly. We were pre rounding and the PT had an impaired swallowing reflex and had mucus and saliva pooling in the back of their throat and creating a gurgling sound. We worried about aspiration and asked the nurse to help us but for some reason my resident got super nauseous at the sound and had to step out of the room. An hour later we were in the ED looking at a patient vomiting repeatedly in front of us and she didn't bat an eye. Medicine is so interesting. Luckily I haven't encountered a body fluid I can't handle yet lol.

When I was the hospital this summer for a myriad of issues (adrenal crisis, kidney failure, sepsis, and severe electrolyte imbalances) at my hospital the Ostomy nurse has to see you to get you the ostomy supplies you need. My ileostomy bag blew out and We were struggling to find a bag that would stay until the wound ostomy nurse could see me. At one point I was naked on the toilet and my ileostomy squirted at the CNA and she dodged it but I felt so bad and she said that wasn’t even the worst things that happened to her that day . She also said patients have intentionally throw poop on her before so it happening by true accident doesn’t bother her. I used to be afraid of vomiting but my whole GI tract is paralyzed and I vomit 6-12 times a day so I have had to get over that. My thing is I want to like you so bad and I do for the most part but you being an IR doctor is what bothers me a tiny bit. I have severe medical PTSD that was caused by IR doctors and it is so bad I have to be deeply sedately for all IR procedures to manage the trauma but also the pain (lidocaine and local anesthesia doesn’t work on me).

Here's the problem: The public are too used to their preconceived notion that doctors should be perfect, that you airing out your disgusts automatically triggered a defensive reflex of weeding out the imperfection. And that's just things that gross you out. As long as you didn't actually get so grossed out that you ran away from the patient, who cares? And this attitude unfortunately goes towards more serious issues like medical errors. You can't air it out in public, your colleagues get very uncomfortable and try to change the subject, and there's the constant fear that your boss will throw you under the bus and get you prosecuted. So, who can you vent your grievances to? The wall? Confession booth? Seriously, since when does "professional" mean robotic, stoic and flawless?

That gave me a good chuckle! I work at a desk in the ER and even though I don't give direct medical care, sometimes the smells are so ghastly and intense that we all make discreet jokes about it just to get through the day. I know that it could be me who is the stinker some time (and probably was, come to think of it, in that operation I had back in 2005 where they didn't have me bathe or shower for 9 days straight - yeeeesh! -- I was even grossing myself out then!)

As a nurse, it never bothered me to stand by patients during vomiting episodes. Made me want to vomit to empty the container they used. But the patient never knew it. I understand Dr. Cellini. It is the vomit not the person he doesn’t like.

I am a medical student, and I can attest we see some pretty gnarly things in the hospital. We talk about it all the time! For every one person who feels strongly offended, there are fifty of us who love a good gross out story.

I'm a med surg nurse and I get grossed out by trachs. The thought of having to suction out someone's phlegm makes me gag. In fact I did start gagging one time when I had to do it. I would rather pay another nurse to do it for me.

Right on buddy! I totally agree with you, no shame in this shit (pun intended) and you’re doing awesome work. Keep it up and I know this is an old video, but congrats on your board certifications!

I think you’re a fantastic doctor. I almost need an IR doctor about a year ago but my condition improved and didn’t need whatever procedure they were going to perform. If I ever needed an IR doctor, I wish it could be you. It’s hard to find good doctors that you can trust. Unfortunately I have several autoimmune diseases which means I have several doctors. I’ve been fortunate with most of my doctors and I have no qualms about changing doctors if there’s a conflict. Even though I’ve not seen you with a patient, I know you would be terrific and have a great bed side manner. The nasty things that people said just need to be ignored. I can honestly say that I don’t think anyone would enjoy getting thrown up on, peed on or pooped on.

Is it true that radiologists and other doctors that work on scans/imaging and are rarely in contact with patients don't enjoy the interactions with them ?
