Jeff: I have a Nikon Fan and user since 1974. My first Nikon was an F2 with Photomic viewfinder (which was later stolen). Finally had to give up on them last year. Someone I have met through KZfaq suggested I look at Sony. Most of my headaches with shooting Video have gone away. I now have 4 Sony's in the studio and have been pleased with the results I have received so far.

It's interesting to see waves of content creators moving to Sony mirrorless systems, I was tempted to jump the boat too but I'm glad I've waited as there's some great mirrorless systems from all brands. I'm a Nikon user for photos, Panasonic for video (and if I want to travel light) and I recently had my hands on the whole Z Series range. I was quite impressed on their new sensors in terms of the high dynamic range on photos, even for video, and the fast AF speed + EV range compared to the old F-mount. I'm now considering getting my hands on the Z6. As for Sony, my strong barriers is their handgrips and menu UX as I find them to be inferior to Nikon and even Panasonic.

Good decision! There is a view in photography that people eventually 'move up' to full frame, but I really think there's never been a better time to go APS-C. It Sounds to me like what you should do, is keep one of your Nikons, and some of its accessories, the top few lenses you use for events, and keep it. And swap out the rest of the gear for sony's offerings, and or maybe get a dedicated video camera. Your pros and cons list really fits more of a "This is what I use the Nikon for and this is what I use the Sony for." Or, we can just slide back towards that Raspberry pi HQ camera module, and make a franken camera array for videos :D

@@JeffGeerling You anticipated my question RedMage. Jeff, as a SLR, I originally had a Nikon F. For what were short-term reasons, I moved away when I went digital. As well as Canon and Tamron lenses, I still use two and a very occasional third Nikkor lens with my present Canon bodies, including a EOS RP. These manual lenses work well with the Canon, so I am surprised that your Nikkor lenses do not give good results with the Sony. Yes, the 70D and RP when combined with my usual 35-105 lens is a bit of a lump when travelling. But I have gotten used to taking them. And they weigh less than the brass-bodied Nikon F!

I primarily do astrophotography and wanted a mirrorless APS-C camera for maximum lens and telescope compatibility (shallow flange depth), and the cheapest available options were the early Sony NEX series cameras. I picked up a NEX-5R for a couple hundred bucks and it has generally worked great for my needs - Sony definitely has always been and continues to be committed to mirrorless, and gives equal priority to APS-C and full-frame formats. When I decided to get a second camera to shoot multiple targets simultaneously though, I bought a modern Canon mirrorless APS-C instead, almost entirely due to a processing bug/quirk in all newer Sony cameras that people call Star Eater that's inconsequential for normal shooting but nearly a deal-breaker for astrophotography. I would otherwise have purchased a new Sony camera instead as I prefer the controls/ergonomics, but like your Mic AGC problem, a camera manufacturer's stubborn unwillingness to provide fixes or setting toggles for well-known, well-documented issues can very much drive groups of users to or away from a given company for what might seem to them like a "minor" problem. Specific users have specific niches/needs, where a problem that seems "small" for the overall camera to a bigwig executive is otherwise an absolute deal-breaker if it ruins your preferred workflow. Details matter!

I don't see myself ever parting with some of my Nikon gear, but you clearly justified the need to switch and I hope it worked out for you. If not, the Z camera(s) will welcome you back with open arms. A follow-up video might be cool to see how it all turned out.

@JeffGeerling 10 ай бұрын
Yeah, I've been testing out Z cams by renting them for certain events, and they are certainly tempting! I might at some point buy one of the smaller bodies for my snapshot camera, since the video quality is 'good enough' in a pinch. The Sony system for APS-C has been great, with a couple new lenses and a new APS-C body every couple years, I haven't regretted it for the video work I do now.

I bought an A6400 last year and have had some good use out of it. The auto setting is great for taking simple photos when I'm out walking. But the online documentation is terrible and every time I go away from "auto" I get things messed up. The one exception is for video into my ATEM Mini hdmi switcher - crisp, clear images even in fairly poor lighting. And with a dummy battery it will run for hours without overheating. Next thing to do is to get an adapter so that my old Konica Minolta telephoto lens can be used. I'm looking forward to seeing what astrophotography I can manage.

You have a legitimate gripe about the lack of quality DX or dZ lenses. I was buying DF glass to put on DX cameras which induced me to move to full frame bodies to get the best out the lenses. Often more weight is in the lens than body so not going full frame seemed a no-brainer. I’m hoping that will change as the APC Z range expands. That said Nikon seems focused on the full frame Z lineup.

Now, this is refreshing :) Awesome to get such a compreehensive review of all this gear of yours. Btw: if you ever get into really close-to-subject macro, give a look at inverter rings! This morning I woke up to a brand new world of possibilities after having found stl files for such a thing. "STL for 58mm inverter ring" on thingiverse. Not expecting much of it (PLA after all...), I left it printing overnight and, this morning, testing the filter side and realizing how nicely it fit my old Fuji S9600 lens, I couldn't wait to test it on my Canon's 18-55 lens. It's awesome!!!! And, yes, there's also STL files for your sony mounts ;-) Good luck! (Do you do photo for any purpose other than making a living of it?)

Ha! I actually have a set of three different-sized extension rings, plus an inverter ring for my Nikon. Sometimes they come in handy when you need zoom + closeup and can focus manually. They're not as convenient for run-and-gun macro, but they have their place, especially since macro lenses are quite expensive (for decent ones).

Smaller bodies. Smaller lenses. Same per-area photo quality (though not as good for things like high ISO shooting). Crop sensor can "add zoom" (not technically but it works kinda like that) to your telephoto lenses, e.g. a 300mm becomes a 450mm. Assuming the same image processor and battery, the camera can run faster and longer (if designed well... some APS-C cameras are not or have weird design decisions that cripple their potential) Sometimes that's good, sometimes not. Depends on your style of shooting and subject matter, and what you like or dislike in a camera body.

Definitely not anything to compete with a modern ILC - even the Pi 4's CPU is not optimized for the image processing one of these ILC's dedicated chips does, and that's not to mention all the hundreds of little mechanical things and sensor adjustments that make these cameras a joy to use (and quick and intuitive). It would be very hard to replicate most of what makes these cameras usable with a Pi (though some others have tried, and are usually successful in getting something working at least).

I drive an old Toyota Camry, not because it's fancy or fun, but because it's always cheap to fix, and drives easy with a boring set of standard features :D I treat my cameras the same way-I didn't feel like Fuji, Olympus, etc. were mainstream enough for me, since I use my cameras as tools and don't fall particularly in love with them, or with a brand. D700 excepted ;)

Fun fact, the laws of physics mean that anything that puts the lens further from the light sensor as is required in an SLR, compromises the optics of the lens. That is if the mirror was not there any you could move the lens closer you get design a better lens. It's reason why old medium format cameras had separate lens, and rangefinders never went away. It would argue that the mirrorless is basically digital rangefinder.

Personally I don't mind the lack of focus to DSLR on the lenses side. I am more than happy to use full frame ones. It's heavier but less than a full frame system and the bonus I get is that due to the crop, only the cleanest part of the lense is used (center). So amazing image quality. Also if you need big tele, you get the nice crop factor. I do agree x1000 on the ergonomics. They did crap with the new bodies, esp the Z FC. I am extremely happy with the quality, but boy this feel cheap and handles so bad...

I think you are making a very smart move. The truth is, unlike film, sensor technology improves all the time. The smaller sensor of today has a better image than the full-frame sensor of yesterday. Hell, even an iPhone today has a better image than a full-frame film camera. And as that sensor gets smaller, the lenses get smaller, and it all weigh less.

Wait, so you're not switching to purely using a mirrorless Pi HQ Camera??
@foldionepapyrus3441
@foldionepapyrus3441 3 жыл бұрын
Would be very on brand for him wouldn't it.. CM4 stereo HQ camera rig, for that zooming, depth aware, highly automatable photostacking, and motion slider shooting set up.. Downside is as good as the HQ camera is its still more phone camera than real camera, the sensor is still pretty small which isn't helpful, and c mount lens just don't seem to come in a huge variety or high quality - so you'd probably end up using oversized DSLR lens anyway... I have been wondering about doing exactly that into an old film camera body, wondering if you can even manage to stuff two HQ cameras stacked in the one body (with some extra optics to correct focus while allowing the PCB's overlap - think it will be impossible, but I don't have a HQ picam in hand to experiment with relative positions or look for potential PCB trims. It would be Canon EOS body as that is what all my lens and camera are - a legacy of what my Dad bought, so when I got a camera I "borrowed" his lens, alot, So far nothing about Canon has made me want to use anything else, even the really really old model I bought in a bundle for the lens it came with is just nice to use and creates a good image - its too old for native video, but it makes a great webcam (thanks gphoto))
@TheAnoniemo
@TheAnoniemo 3 жыл бұрын
@@foldionepapyrus3441 The Pi camera in a film body would work if you get the spacing right. Maybe replace the back flipout cover with a 3D printed one that houses the Pi camera and zero.
@foldionepapyrus3441
@foldionepapyrus3441 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheAnoniemo Indeed, but as the image sensor size of the HQ is just about small enough two of them fit in a full frame lens' sweet spot it would be interesting if you could manage to stack two in there - a small amount of inbuilt focus stacking and/or some very minor degree of depth sensing could then be achieved- that is probably impossible though, the amount of PCB trimming or fairly complex optics I expect it would need to be possible makes its almost certainly impractical...

Exactly the line of thinking I've been going through lately. I've been a Nikon user for ~18 years, and have *loved* their full frame cameras for stills. But their video support has been a joke, and while I don't own one, the Z series has just seemed very very underwhelming to me. Even the pace and releasing ordering of Z mount lenses is a head scratcher to me. I just feel like they have really be falling behind in the last 5-10 years, and are barely treading water at this point. And if I'm going to jump to mirrorless, should I just jump ship off Nikon entirely. Oh, and their flip screens are by far the stupidest I've seen. Like they are handy for some stuff, but they are so much more limited than other options. Just not being able to face it forward really limits some options. But yeah - Nikon grips are by far my favorite, and I can never get used to the opposite direction zoom rings that Canon has.

The main advantage in Sony vs Nikon is support from 3rd party. For Sony everyday you have new product: acessories, lens from Chinese brands, Sigma, Tamron, with AF or MF. Gimbal? All gimballs are supporting Sony. Nikon almost all, but not all features. F lenses? It is not a solution, I don't like FTZ adapter, I am using it only with my 70-200 lens with F mount.

Lens selection is one of the downsides (for my move, at least). Nikon F has hundreds of gems (and bargain gems at that). Sony's E mount is lacking for budget options in many focal lengths and specialties, IMO (I mention this in the video). And autofocus, sorta-for video yes, for photos, nothing I've used in mirrorless compares to the magic of 3D Focus tracking on one of Nikon's newer DSLRs. I didn't even utter the words "Eye AF" in this video, because it really means close to nothing for my own work (even though that seems to be the only thing Fro Knows PHOTO .... dot com ever compares on mirrorless :D)

I'll stick with my Nikon Z series for much better hardware quality, indeed Sony has better autofocus system, better in low light, but Nikon Z series has better image stabilization, beyond that I'm having no trouble with the autofocus with my Nikon Z series, i still love my DSLR the D500 which still famous in wildlife photography and video quality is still phenomenal, but lacking the autofocus has no match the my Nikon Z series, i still use it for backup, Sony, Nikon, Canon, they're all manufacture awesome cameras, i use to be a sony fan back in camcorders days, no camera is best, technology is going crazy, just bought my self Nikon Z30 to use it on my gimbal and wanted something lighter then my Z6, for the price it's win win, yes it doesn't have view finder, no biggie for me because i will be using it for Videography, i also have the FTZ adapter which I'm mounting my wide angel prime lenses on it and it's working great, for that being said it's a choice in which camera you need to invest, happy shooting folks.

I'm curious, did you consider Fujifilm? All of their X-series cameras use APS-C sensors, there is a great variety of high quality lenses, and almost all new models record 4K video at 60fps. You mentioned in the video that you love Sony's autofocus system and I completely agree - it's the best on the market. However, in my opinion, Fuji's strength is in their color science - second to none. I would live to hear your opinion!

I do like Fuji's cameras, and the few times I've tried them I had no real complaints about the end result. But they're a lot lower market share, and I typically use something that has wider support / more availability just for little things like being able to pick up a replacement lens, battery, etc. from any old Best Buy or local electronics retailer. Fuji gear isn't always stocked in random places where I might be on a paid gig and need something quick. Nikon, Canon, and Sony gear is always available.

It's more of a cross-grade. Or up-grade depending on needs. For my needs (more video work, less low-light event photography) its actually an upgrade, especially since I can get the same quality of footage with a physically smaller body (able to be stabilized and mounted more easily than the large SLR body+lenses).
I tried all Sony Canon and Nikon cameras at WEX this is how it went.
