Hello internet, VCV Rack is one of the greatest sound design tools available today, it's completely free and comes with countless of modules to use.
Yet as exciting as it sounds, this might be it's biggest flaw. In this video, I want to adresse this issue.

The multitude of modules in VCV Rack is not a flaw. If you find the choice overwhelming simply just add the ones you use to your library. Just because for example Count Modula or Vult have a plethora of modules doesn't mean you have to download them all. I have the ones that I use in my library and add to them when something comes along that I find interestingm, that way I don't get swamped with modules that I will probably never use.

I agree with you when it comes to adding only the modules you need, if I'm not mistaking tho, you can only do this now, like a year ago or something you could only get everything from a certain developper, or did I miss something ? Anyways, it's a flaw for me only for the mentioned reasons, else I do consider it to be it's point of strength too :)

I just favorite the modules I like to use often and spend time learning on a deeper level. Idk you can always create your own limitations within vcv rack

It is the classic paralysis of too many options. We have reached the point in history, of having everything at our fingertips. Giving us an infinite number of choices, but a limited amount of time/energy, to explore, use, and take advantage of those options.

Great Idea. I`ve also become overwhelmed by the infinite module possibilities in VCV Rack and stopped using it for a while. This brings back a more fresh look. Such fun! Thank you.

hehehe you're not alone with that, I mostly stopped using it too, just too many options and sadly not many infos what many of them do....but will be focusing more on learning all that stuff. plan is to get the pro

I bought v2 on day 1, made a quick patch with VCV and haven't touched it since. It scares me. The number of options, i.e. the free stuff is just mind-boggling and mind-numbing. Perhaps the way to go is to install it from scratch and just start with basic modules from few reliable developers and only add new ones when I'm sure I need them?

My path was to follow Omri's patch-from-scratch videos, branching off when my attention wanders and I get a spark of creativity. Yeah, you'll end up using a lot of the same modules/techniques that he does, but to spice it up you can use the random function in v2 and just trial-and-error experiment instead of reading manuals. That way it's a hands-on discovery process instead of all the theoretical studying. With enough practice, you'll boil down copied techniques into fundamental modular techniques that can be applied with any combinations of modules.

Learn modules, add them to favourites, continue to use and learn them , don’t add modules to patch without intention and a knowledge of what it does . This has helped me use it properly.

Same, bought it since day 1 then used it a few times and then threw it on a virtual shelf collecting virtual dust lol. That too could be a solution also, personally I didn't think of re-installing everything just for the sake of the hustle of doing all of that, I mean everything is installed and I already know my way arround most of it so why not putting what I that into good use ?

I don't agree on not reading the manuals as some modules are way too deep than what meets the eyes, like most of Mutable instruments modules, Instruo's modules too, so going only hands on control can be really frustrating sometimes. I mean take clouds or plaits for example, some algorithms needs to trig them with external triggers to get them to work, if you don't read the manual, you wouldn't know that.

Yeah unfortunately unless it’s a 1 knob per function type of module , manuals are important to coax the most out of certain modules , having the hardware forces you into this , I have stopped buying modules for the moment , but when I did I would read manuals in completion before they even arrived :)

I agree Ollie it can be a bit overwhelming. I like looking at patches on youtube that are only a couple of racks deep......people still do some amazing stuff with them. DocB did a good ambient patch with only 2 rows of modules. I get really exciting by the possibilities VCV rack offers but like everything sometimes you want to express yourself straight away and you can't with VCV Rack. It's like the pencil and paper idea vs a 3d modeller. You can't get results immediately. It will be interesting when we can build racks with AI. The Tangible Waves looks good - just fit them into one starter module. I like the idea of that.

Without VCV Rack maybe I would never touched this modular world....Good advice to don't get loose with too many tools. Like in a daw finally ... Works for everything in each process (prod, mix, master) :D

I noticed the problem right from the beginning so i started deleting modules if i didn't use them in the last 4-5 patches. I ended up with a quite small collection that has everything i really need.

Good vid man. VCV can be overwhelming with the sheer amount of modules available! When I bought V2 (I wanted the VST), I stripped loads of modules away and got more into the fixed rack idea, which, as you point out, is what you have with a hardware set up. Our local internet VCV Guru Omri Cohen has some excellent fixed rack set ups on his channel & Patch Storage page that are worth a look.

Awesome video, and thanks for making it! Agreed 100% about the huge library being a pro and con. I do the same where I build a template but then go down a rabbit hole adding a bunch of stuff not knowing what I actually need or what most of it does! Then I say fuck it, and open Pigments 😆😆 This is a nice template and covers so many options. I use almost all of those modules already and really need to just stick to something and use that 👍🏻 Edit: Love the idea about a community bank 😈😈

I assume you use VCV as a DAW basically right ? I mean unlike me who uses VCV as a Synth/effect unit

I feel this 100% @Patrick Havercamp. For me, I can really get into a creative flow with VCV that I just can't get with a DAW. I've subscribe to nearly every plugin pack available and bought most of the commercial ones. I love the choice, ie. I'm constantly asking "what is the best sequencer for what I'm trying to accomplish?" I do sometimes find the sheer number of oscillators a little overwhelming, but the unique sounds you can get from many of them make sound design super fun. Anyway, @Ollie Music thanks for the video and the fixed patch, looking forward to playing with it!

cardinal is free vcv is not, cardinal is stable, vcv not so... cardinal is the open source option as vcv originally intended or sold itself...

How do you send output of VCV to your DAW?

I just started using Cardinal. Many modules are flawed. I don't know if it's the same in VCV. I only use a very few brands having modules of consistent quality. Common problems are interface bugs, wrong pitch and lacking response to CV. Some developers spend several pages in their manuals to explain basic theory (which they often have misunderstood) but fail to mention exactly what their modules do and how their interface works. Others give detailed descriptions of updates without spending time explaining what their modules do and how to operate them. Compared to Vital and Dexter modular virtual synthesizers are a mess. I would say the choices are underwhelming rather than overwhelming. I use modular a synthesizer because it's the only way I get all the tools I want.

Cardinal ships with all the free/open source modules you can get with VCV Rack.

"Why I'm not using VCV any more"....makes a whole video with VCV... Am I missing something? 😄 I don't find the number of modules a problem really, you can always unsubscribe to collections you don't want, or add an individual module if you don't want to see the whole collection. On the other hand, new modules often inspire new sounds/techniques so I'm constantly trying new stuff. It's a benefit IMO.

I think you missed the rest of the title that says : "and how I'm planning to fix it", hence why I made a full video with VCV 😉 it's a benefit indeed but in my case, someone who uses many synthesizers beside VCVRack, having to learn new modules & experiment with them all the time isn't a practicle option as it's too time consuming!

vcv is not entirely free if you ever want to use it inside a DAW as a vst, cardinal is the only one free and real open source. Being said that, cardinal vst3 and vst also works better.

VCV is a free DAW, however since it's considered a DAW, you need to pay to be able to use it as a VST as in this case you're using it as an instrument/effect (as explained by the creator).

@@olliepsy yeah Cardinal, being the open source free version, does not charge for a thing and never crashes unlike VCV. Both are open modulars not DAWs, since the premise of a DAW is audio edition which cannot be done in modular environments, therefore the organic nature of the audio.

Puredata looks fun but at this stage, I would rather invest time on M4L seems more "complete"
