In recent times I've also started to incorporate slow living into my lifestyle, which has made me realize so many benefits regarding frugal living.
All this, I of course share in the video. Hope you enjoy it! 🤗

You are lucky to live in Finland. I live in the U.S. and over here if you get sick you are doomed financially. I am a minimalist and very frugal however due to having a kidney stone a few years ago and my insurance not good enough even though it was half of the cost of my rent, I’m in debt up to my eye balls. Not fair at all, but it is what it is. Stay in a country where you don’t have this problem.

As much as debt sucks, it can (in the proper context) be a blessing. Debt can create a frugal lifestyle out of the sheer necessity to pay the debt off. The goal is to learn from the experience and maintain the frugal lifestyle after the debt is paid in full. Easy said than done, but worth it.

My wife and I just made the bold move of selling everything we own that didn’t fit in four travel bags and moving to a new country. We had 32 years of accumulated “stuff” including a house, car and many other big ticket items. Now we are nomad living for a while and we are, essentially, forced to stay minimalist. We did bring cooking items like our favourite pans and coffee presses as well as clothes and some things that would be hard to get here but it made us really think about what was important. Now every purchase is thought out as “want vs need” and if it’s a need, can we do something else. This is a whole different way of life. On the top of the list of important is food so we first find the local butcher, market and stands that have what we need. We stick with local so fruits that are in season locally, meat that is not imported.

@@SunnyKindJourney One thing I have never seen addressed in simple living/minimalism videos is strategies for compromising and/or staying at peace when your partner (of 50 years in my case!!) does not share the same values. You have probably not had to experience this, and I hope you never do. But I want to live sustainably and frugally when my husband is a bit of a hoarder and won't get rid of anything. (At least he is not a fan of shopping, except for food and electronics). I think I'm coping pretty well, but I'd love to hear ideas on living at peace with someone you love who feels differently. Thanks again for your wonderful videos!

@@JournalJourneys51 Thanks for the idea! I don't have so much experience in this as my partner shares the same values as me to not have our place full of irrelevant stuff. We both think very carefully where we want our money and energy to be. But on the things that we have differences, mutual respect has helped a lot. I try my best to see her point of view and vice versa. This is what has brought us together over the years. 50 years is so long time that all this might be harder but I'm sure behind there is love and mutual respect for you too ❤

@@SunnyKindJourney Thank you again for your kind reply. You might be glad to know I sat down today and wrote out a list of things I could do in my life AS IT IS NOW to further my intentions of living a peaceful, environmentally-concerned, frugal life, and was surprised that together we are doing not too bad, and I could do even more, on my own, and as an example to my husband. It was enlightening to me to sit and consider all these things. You have also reminded me to consider each day things I learn (this was one!) and to be sure to take time for gratitude. Thanks again!

Ever since I discovered your channel I feel more and more identify with what you share. People look at me like I'm a weirdo for buying second hand (in Spain is like saying you're poor) but I'm actually the one thinking: what are you waiting for? Is a great opportunity to give an extra life to something instead of just throwing it away. Thank you for sharing!
@greenkitty82
@greenkitty82 Жыл бұрын
Hola! (My grandmother is Spanish so had to reply to a Spaniard!) I live in the UK and growing up I had to have second hand things because we couldn't afford new and there was a huge stigma attached to it. If you were relying on charity and second hand goods you were considered lower in the class system as you didn't earn lots of money but to me it doesn't make sense to have new when something second hand still has a use and works perfectly fine. It's better to keep something in circulation and usable then damage the planet further by purchasing new goods that strip its resources. We can't recycle every single thing but the UK is getting better now with encouraging us to be ethical and making second hand "hip" amongst the young. I can afford to buy new now but my childhood conditioning still makes me prefer second hand and I actually feel happier that I'm giving something another life and helping the planet then buying new. On the rare occasion I do buy anything new, I intend to keep it as long as I physically can.

Living frugal doesn’t mean you have to be poor. In fact this video does a great job of pointing that out. He talks about having enough for the things he needs, and not having to sacrifice the things that are important to him. If you want to live in a house and a house cost a million dollars trust the money will show up. Buying a million dollar house does not mean you suddenly buy junk you don’t need or stop making conscious decisions. Sometimes tons and tons of money is required for a experience you want to create for yourself but you can still be frugal you can still be you. That’s the beautiful thing about this video. Being poor sucks no one wants that and yet many of us think the alternative is vanity and that is simply not true. You could spend a billion dollars on something that helps the world and that could be the most aligned and frugal thing for you. Be yourself don’t get distracted by money but don’t hinder yourself by choosing a poverty mindset. Great video!

Hi Doris! Thanks for being here 🌱 Minimalism, frugal living & living simply is a process. For me it took years to understand my reasons for it and to start simplifying. For some it could be less, for some more. The most important thing is to be self-aware and intentional with your choices. Great points! We really should be more mindful about buying things and consuming, nowadays we face these impulses to buy stuff we probably don’t need or want… I remember how as a child of 90s recession in Finland we never got anything new and all cloths and stuff were from drift stores - and I hated it! After growing up and going to Uni I began buying mindlessly and now all I have is a lot of unimportant stuff and clothes that don’t fit - and crushing amount of debt…

I am so happy to have come across this video, so much of it resonates with me, and the most i can resonate with is how hard it is to explain to the people around me that this really isnt cheap or stingy , it is truly a thin line that has been super difficult to explain. I find my sisters for example eating out almost every single day, each spending more than 400$ a month on eating out, and it just doesn’t give me the satisfaction I long for, I love homemade food and all the energy it gives me, the love and care I or my mother can put in the food. And so many times i have to refuse to go to a restaurant only to hear the words ( stingy or cheap). Thank you so much for this video, at last I feel it might be easier to explain!

Every time I have visited there, I am impressed by how much the people value buckets, even rating them as 'this is my BEST bucket, reserved for only clean kinds of work' or 'this is my grubby bucket for dirty kinds of work' (and don't ever get them mixed up, like borrowing a good bucket for doing something that will get it dirty!)... 15 years? Plenty of life left in them yet - some of ours are more like 30 (+)!!! No, they're not tatty, just old and often much better made. Many, but not all, 'younger' items were charity shop items. Same goes for a lot of our household objects and collectibles, many bought at car boot sales and now ebay. The ironic thing is that many people who are obsessed with the current recycling craze have no idea how to genuinely recycle in their own lives, but buy new all the time. We are by no means obsessive about this, but it means that when we need or want to spend money on something new or more expensive, we haven't wasted all our money on unimportant and unnecessary fashion items and fripperies. About to start going through a lot of older clothes and recycling them on the sewing machine into something useful to someone. Have a good day!

I try to use cash as often as possible. I run my own business and only accept cash. Its good to see someone of a younger generation still using cash aswell

Quote from your video: "I wouldn't invest in things that I wouldn't need..." Wrong! You should say: I wouldn't spend on things that I wouldn't need. People confuse spending with investing. I spend money on a new couch but I never invest money in a new couch. You only invest in something where you hope to see a return on that thing you invest in. That's why you invest in the first place. If you just spend money, for example on a couch, then the money is gone...forever... There won't be any return on your so-called "investment", simply because you spent (actually wasted) your money. Otherwise a very good and useful video. Thanks for sharing mate!👍

Haha it made me so happy when you told the story about Finns standing in line to get a free bucket. That is such a Finnish thing to do 😁 I spent some months in Helsinki during university and miss it very much. Living frugally also comes very naturally to me. Just like you I love watching how my savings get bigger. Of course there are also things that are not necessary but we still enjoy them and, therefore, spend money on them. For me that would be going out to eat because Berlin is vegan food paradise. Also a nice flat for myself rather than living in a shared space. But when it comes to being "cheap" in the eyes of others because we chose to not invest in things that are generally considered "normal" (e.g. car, new electronics, expensive clothing) we should always remember that it is our own life, not the life of someone else. And, therefore, we should live it the way it suits us best, not anyone else.

I'm also frugal and a minimalist. BTW, do they go hand-in-hand? Anyway, I do everything by myself - bookkeeping, taxes, gardening, cleaning, fixing, sewing, etc., etc. - and by doing so, I not only save a lot of money, but I also learn a lot in the process. Soon, you become a jack of all trades. I've also been cutting my family's hair for years, which, BTW, came in very handy during the Pandemic. By doing things on your own, you will also discover talents, hobbies and interests you never knew about yourself.

I actually don't think they go always hand in hand even though they are similar and I am both. Frugal for me is not wasting money & resources, minimalism is not getting things in my life even though I would get them for free to keep my life simple 😊 Nice comment!

Me too... I rather save and invest than buy things that just go in the closet or garage or rent-a-space, to waste more money. Buying junk adds up and most people regret it later in life, when the money really is needed. I like to recycle plastics and reuse often to save from buying again and again; also I buy clothes at second hand stores is golden in that the new clothes bought just gets worn out after a couple of months (which new expensive clothes just turned into a second hand clothes).

I can relate to all of these reasons. Security, I don’t want to rely on other people or have to take extreme measures should I run into a problem. Food, is also 1 category I also tend to spend more for quality . I get a good feeling by making due with basic tools, utensils, belongings in general.

I've never heard anyone go into the feelings being frugal gives. And I also feel the same way. I think its also partly my heritage as my family on my moms side is mennonite and they believe similar to amish of something of a simple life. Do not store up treasure on earth but in heaven I guess. My grandparents were also very into recycling. My grandpa would travel along the road picking up cans along highways. He had a very kind soul. But I also love the security of being frugal but also its just the most eco friendly thing especially ordering things and having them shipped. I do it for things but I despise it when I can avoid it. All the cost of travel, gas, packaging just for one thing you want. That's my personal prejudice I suppose.

You know, beside it is lovely to watch frugal living content, it is also a really good coincidence to watch a youtuber in Finland. I'm recently amazed by people of Finland. How you guys only small in numbers, but excels in many things as a country. There are a lot of content about living in Japan, or something like "a day in the life of Japanese carpenter" Or something like that. Like Paolo from Tokyo, he covers a day in the life of Japanese blablabla from various professions. I hope either you or other youtuber from Finland could cover such things too.

Hei! I’ve just found your channel and I really enjoy your videos. I live in the UK, I live in social housing (government housing) and often feel I am not good enough when I’m with my friends who own their homes, have big careers etc. BUT I realised lately that I am lucky to live in a cheaper accommodation, my friends who are doctors and lawyers etc are always stressed and they have to spend all their money on their houses. I have started to clear out and sell my belongings and am also living a frugal life now. Your videos and videos like this help me to feel better about myself and my situation. Kiitos paljon!
