Did an ethnography in ecuador, worked as a social worker in the us, worked in marketing in China, taught english in Korea, history and anthropology in Colombia, opened a successful coffee shop with emphasis in human interactions...and all of this thanks to anthropology and the skills /knowledge i gained at the university. Directly, It has giving me more satisfaction than cash. Indirectly, it has giving me both the same. If you love the subject...let it take you in a wild ride of discovering the world and yourself.

Videos like these really inspire me to find a career that will make me happy and enjoy waking up everyday. I recently graduated with a bachelor’s in communications and I found myself regretting it. I switched majors about three times and would take the required classes, but they never interested me. I ended up choosing communications because it was versatile and I didn’t really want to spend more time in school. So after graduating I was looking for jobs and I wasn’t excited for the jobs. I’m thinking of going back to school and doing something that interests me. For a while now I’ve been looking into marine biology and so far that is the only career path that has made me want to go back to school. I love learning about the ocean and the animals living in the ocean. The fact that there is still so much more that we can learn about the ocean and animals truly amazes me. I am like you in a way because I really want to make an impact. I don’t really care about making a lot of money because in the end of the day happiness is so important. 😊

This video was so great! I am an incoming college freshman this fall with the hopes of double majoring in history and anthropology with a minor in archeology, and though I am passionate about the things I chose, I have been facing a lot of judgement and backlash from family members. I, like you, value being happy in my work over how lucrative my major is, and its so comforting to hear of someone who feels the same.

Thanks for this! I'm questioning if I should go into anthropology. I am 27 and was majoring in Drawing and then Illustration and I dropped out. But my minor has always been Art History. Anthropology is the more scientific sister of Art History but is, surprisingly, MORE marketable and has more job opportunities lol I am also a fantasy writer and worldbuilding is one of my favorite hobbies. The study of anthropology is sort of....reverse worldbuilding which is super cool to me. I'm still not sure if I'm going to major in anthropology when I return to school, especially since I'm already 30k+ in debt, but I'm leaning toward it. This information helps a lot!

Thank you so much for sharing this video that helps me explore the major! I have one confusion about Anthropology is that you seem always can find a subfield of it that is more detailed explained by another major; such as, how orders formed in the society is a question for Anthropology but it seems to be detailed in politics, so I am wondering how can I make sure that I am interested in the macroscope of human instead of a microscope like politics. Thanks again and I am so impressed by your passion and the way you find where your passion lies~
@AliviaBrown

Hi! I am so happy to hear this video was helpful for you. And I completely see what you mean about the macro vs micro side of anthropology. Determining exactly what you are interested in and want to study is so challenging. My best advice I think would be to just get started, take the introductory anthropology courses and see what you think. These intro classes tend to be very macro so I think it may help you to see if you want to study anthropology more widely or if you get bored by the broadness of it. Good luck!!

Oh my god I can't tell you how much I needed this😭 you literally spoke my mind on anthropology and why I love it.❤️ I just found out your channel and sis you've got another subscriber 🥳 I don't have many people around me that know much about this field or ones that have a major on anthropology or archeology etc and also I haven't found much on the internet ( idk may it's just me). Your channel is sooo informative thank you so much 🥺❤️ I have soo many questions about anthropology and it would be wonderful if you could help me. Sorry this comment is going to be super long and I appreciate your patience and taking time to read this ❤️ So I have been OBSESSED with Ancient Egyptian History from like my 4th grade. Iam so fascinated by Ancient Egypt that I literally wouldn't leave any thing related to ancient Egypt unread that I can get my eyes on. Then I started searching about Egypt and jobs related to it and that ended up with Archeology. When I was in my 6or7 th grade I fell in love with chemistry and biology. So then I looked for something that connects biology chemistry and History and ended up with ✨ Anthropology ✨ on my mind. I love knowing about our history but with a scientific perspective. For example I love to know more about say 'our evolution' through what got to change or what changes were made to our genetics,cells and DNAs as we became homo sapiens. I like more of the molecular/ biological / cellular part of anthropology.(idk if I am expressing this correctly 🙄) I hope you get the idea. I kinda want to end up working on prehistoric studies & Ancient civilizations (especially Egypt) like on more of the Laboratory work (like dna analysis etc so that I can have all biology chemistry and history on my hands🙃) I want to know which major should I be taking ( keeping the job opportunities in mind) - anthropology, biological anthropology, archeology or straight up egyptology or do you have any other options that you would recommend to a person like me with the above mentioned crazy interests 😁 Also what minors could/should I be taking and the requirements. I also wanna know whether mathematics is important for taking a bsc in anthropology or what major you suggest cuz I suck at maths. I have taken the option at my school that offers science+English+2nd language on 11&12th grade so that I don't have to study maths( narrow escape 🥲)I'm studying ISC syllabus. I'll be coming under the category of 'international student' cuz I'm not from the US 🇺🇸 I'm from India 🇮🇳. Just so you know. Once again thank you for reading this and hope you'll be responding to it❤️ Please keep on making more videos I love'em ❤️

Hi Harhsa! First of all...YOU ARE SO SWEET!! Thank you so much for your kind thoughts on my videos! I'm trying to create a corner on the internet where all of the nerdy anthropologists of the world can unite hehe. Egypt is SO cool first of all and I love that you know you have a passion for it. Fun fact-when I was little I kept a journal written in only hieroglyphs so people couldn't read it 🤫😂 As far as what to major in, I really do think anthropology could be the perfect major for you. I focus on biological anthropology (which it sounds like could be perfect for you tbh) but you could also do an archaeology focus. I think when you start taking classes it will become clear-that is what happened to me. Something else that just occurred to me is forensic anthropology/paleoanthropology. Have you looked into this at all? I just did a quick google search and linked an article I think you could find interesting. Doing research on Anthropology/Egypt will be a great start to see what career options truly are available. I'm not an expert by any means but I hope this is helpful! www.longdom.org/open-access/anthropological-study-of-the-ancient-egyptian-mummy-based-on-thecomputed-tomography-method-2332-0915-1000203.pdf Again, thank you so much and I certainly plan to keep posting. @@AliviaBrown Aw! Thank you so much for replying ❤️ the anthropology nerds' corner is an awesome idea! And yes Egypt is soo cool! And that journal 😂❤️ Yes so I also feel like anthropology would be the best with focussing biological & archeological anthropology. I did briefly go through forensic anthropology and paleoanthropology and I did find it interesting. I felt like paleoanthropology would become a part of biological anthropology am I right? Idk A major factor I want to be clear about is whether I should be studying mathematics in 11th&12th grade to continue my way to taking degree in b.s. anthropology because I'm horrible at math(only thing I love about maths is angles and geometry 🥲) When I looked it up online some websites say it's not required but some say I should be studying math to take anthropology in college.I AM THE CONFUSION 🙄 According to what I currently opted for my 11th&12grade I'll be studying Biology, Chemistry, Physics, English and my 2nd language (Malayalam) in ISC syllabus. Would these be enough to me to get into college? Or is maths compulsory for B.s. anthropology? It would be so nice of you if you could ask someone about that and let me know cuz I'll be starting my 11th grade after a month or two. I'm so glad I met you 😍I don't have any contact with any one in America to enquire about these things that's why I'm sending essays to you about my questions 😅 Thank you for the info and I'll soon be checking on the links you've sent ❤️

@AliviaBrown 3 жыл бұрын
Hello! Yes, sorry I missed your math question (totally my bad haha). The best answer I can give is it totally depends on the college. Generally speaking, you should not need a lot of math experience to do well in Anthropology. I have never taken a math class in college (nor will I ever need one) to do well in Anthropology and graduate with this degree. Also, when you get to college-no matter where you go-that school will set you up with the prerequisites you need to succeed in whatever major you like, so don't stress out too much! I didn’t know what anthropology (the term that is) until my senior year of high school. However ever since I was a small kid, I loved studying cultures, especially at that point in time Asian culture mainly Japanese, Korean and Chinese (I never had much access to other Asian cultures and my sister was taking Chinese and Japanese language classes while growing up). I grew up watching you know the typical exposure stuff like anime and manga. However I think I took it too far and may have been unknowingly annoying and doing ignorant stupid stuff (nothing racist thankfully) until some kid basically insulted me and said I was annoying. It killed me and I immediately stopped looking into cultures. My senior year I had IB cultural anthropology. And it exposed me to other cultures around the world mainly indigenous cultures. I really liked it, but I still was not looking much into cultures anymore. After graduating I took cultural anthropology in my first semester of college. I loved it again. Great professor. However I had some problems within the years. I felt a lot of pressure. 1. Anthropology was a useless degree and there’s no money 2. We need STEM majors; they’re more important 3. Family hoping I’d be an engineer due to being in Robotics in high School and having engineering classes while there There was other issues but those were the main ones. This last year and this year, I was trying hard to be an EE/Stem major but honestly it’s way too overwhelming and not for me. I’m not excited over it nor too interested in it. I’m going back to Anthropology and going to redo bio anthropology and finish it with my favorite professor. Everyone who I know and worth their salt has countered the “this or that major is useless” talk is that almost every major is useless and doesn’t have a direct path. I’m hoping to go beyond a bachelors but I’m going to see what paths to take with anthro. Thanks for reading this long comment

Hi Anthony-first of all, thank you for sharing so many of your thoughts and experiences within the academic and anthropological space, it does not go unnoticed. And second, I am so glad to hear that after so much pressure and experimentation, you have come back to anthropology. I truly hope you can find success in the field and prove the those around you how important this field of study is! PS-I did IB in high school too and loved it!

I agree with the quote, no ones sense of humanity is the same as another's. We will never know the full scope of humanity. Also I would love to know what lab classes are like in anthopology.
@AliviaBrown
@AliviaBrown 3 жыл бұрын
Exactly...humans are just too complex. And my experience with lab classes have been really great! It really depends on what type of lab you want to join but each one studies extremely different work. Some lab classes look at genome sequencing, others look at coding literature and behavior data, and the list goes on. You can look up professors and see if they have labs (and what they are doing in those labs) on college websites also. I hope that helps!

If I'm being honest, I had NO CLUE what I wanted to do but it is amazing that you are already thinking about it. If humans/human existence is what interests you, Anthropology could be a great way to go. There is also sociology or history. However, if you like the mechanics of human existence, there is also evolutionary biology! To make my decision, I mostly took a bunch of classes in college to see what I like :) What do you enjoy in High School?

Hi there I'm a 16 year old from South Africa and I'm completely in love with anthropology. One day I'd like to become an Anthropologist because of my passion for culture, history, heritage and development. Yet at the same time, I have a passion for my faith as a Christian. Preaching the gospel has always and will always be my first priority. I can't decide between these 2 careers. At one stage, I thought about combining a degree in anthropology with a theology degree. That way I could focus my anthropological research with a Christian perspective. Is there such a thing as Christian anthropology? Could I grow successfully in this way? Please let me know. It would be greatly appreciated 😊

Does Anthropology have a course with learning a language or culture? Because I am very interested in learning more about cultures and their history as well as their language.
@AliviaBrown
@AliviaBrown 3 жыл бұрын
Hello! So within the Anthropology major, I have not seen classes who are explicitly committed to teaching a language. This is because the language department offers these classes so it would be redundant for the Anthro department to do it as well. With all of that said, it is highly encouraged that students learn another language. It is very possible to take classes in Anthropology as well as in whatever language you would like to learn. I hope this helps!!

I'm about to be 26 and in the same boat as you. Except I'm scared to inroll in college and fail. I suck at spelling I suck at math , science, everything. But something ( everything ) about anthropology makes me wish I was good at everything. Makes me wanna train myself to be the smartest. I read alot about people's lives, about the history that isn't learned in school, about how fucked up governments are and end up fuckin over so many peoples life's, simply because they have the power too; the power that throughout history we ourselves have given them. I love walking for hours and meeting random people, being part of a time in their lives and hearing about who they are and trying to study them to figure out how they got to where they are.

The safe answer to this question is no. However, some of these topics have come up in my upper division biological anthropology courses. Nothing too challenging but generally speaking, they should not surface much in an undergraduate anthropology education :)

Hi! I'm at UCLA and I'm pre-HBS, I've been considering minoring in Anthro because it seems interesting and there's some overlap with my major. However, I don't really know much about anthro and the way my classes are going so far I probably won't have a chance to take an anthro class until my third year. Do you have any suggestions on ways I can learn more about anthro until I have a chance to take a class on it? Do you know anything about minoring in anthro/have any suggestions regarding it?
@AliviaBrown
@AliviaBrown 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Teela! I love hearing from other UCLA students! Ironically enough, I know several people who do the anthropology HBS combination. I know Anthro 1 (biological anthropology) counts for both the anthropology minor and the HBS major so I think that could be a great place to start. Otherwise, I think KZfaq is an exceptional place to start. There are some other great channels like the American Anthropology Association and Armchair Academics that I think may help. Also there are some great recorded anthropology lectures on youtube which could be fun as well. I think minoring in anthro would be AWESOME and I do know it is a pretty short minor!

i like anthroplogy, i dont like the theories im taught to believe though. we are never given the other side of the coin or an answer which lies in the middle. since the beginning of social science and anthropology, its all been about stripping away the wests cultural and moral frameworks. durkehim, malinowski hated christian religion, no wonder one of them was considered a father of anthropology. anthropology hates any notion that one thing might be better than another. on the one hand you have an esteemed evolutionary biologist like richard dawkins saying their is no reason you cannot breed humans if you wanted too, to be better runners or more intelligent over a few generations. yet in anthropology we are told impossible, why? because it doesnt fit the ideology. we are also told that you cannot rank cultures, because we all exist in our own relative time line. yes but we also exist on a world wide timeline, so why can i not say that living in a fully plumbed house with electricity is clearly better than a tent in the woods. its nonsensical. anthropology was begun by marxists over a century ago, and now in the last 60 years its been hijacked by far left ideologues again.
