For years I used bulbs with too high watts for my old fixtures under a porch for plants in the Winter, probably about five nights a year. Once I realized it I bought the better fixtures and marked the old ones. It never occurred to me to match correct fixtures to bulbs. Thank goodness I didn’t burn the house down! Whew!

I started using the heating plates when my neighbors barn burned down from heat lamps she had for her goats. I quit using heat lamps completely and made adjustments to my barn to keep my goats warm in the winter. Luckily I'm in Florida so we don't get snow or extremely cold Temps. I have brooded many turkeys and chicks with the plates, never had a problem

Our last batch of 50 chicks, we used the heat lamp at one end and the heat plate at the other. Most of our chicks slept under the heat lamp, but we did have a few under the heat plate. Since our brooder is outside in the old pen, I don’t know if they slept all night for sure, but when we would check before bed, they’d all be asleep. We used the red lamp.

Very cool , unfortunately we aren't allowed to have chickens in my borough. We do live really close to a framer market. Most of that produce comes out of Lancaster Pa. They also have fresh meats and eggs. Worth paying the extra for sure. God Bless❤

I used our electric heater for a week then it warmed up here to the 80s & they haven’t had additional heat source since. They’re a couple weeks old now & doing fine. I used red lamp last year, I’ve heard it still interrupts their sleep patterns. I intentionally bought these chicks in warmer weather to avoid using external heat source & so far they’re healthy & happy

Thank you for the information. Our chick broader is outside away from the house. It's a large wooden rectangle shaped box. The Roof is hinged so you can raise it up. I use the red heat lamp and has worked well. I section off the space and then enlarge it as the chicks grow and need more space. Eventually I open one end and have a totally enclosed area all around so they can go out side . But I like the heat tray you showed. Definitely a good thing. God bless.

I have used both the red & clear lamps over the years, Heidi & found my chicks awake at times when I checked at night. It always bothered me, though, having them in light 24/7 as in nature, they would be in the dark, under their mother. This year, I got just two chicks and set up as usual. The 3rd day, one had died and the day after, the light burned out! I saw your warmer on Amazon & liked it but decided to try & make do with one of my seedling warmer mats. Using a large birdcage (cardboard around the lower half all around), I wrapped the heat mat in a large, heavy plastic bag and placed it on just half of the cage floor. The whole floor & mat were then covered in pine shavings, so half the floor was a cooler area to migrate to. 'Til she lost interest in it, I also upended a small box in one corner over the heat mat so she could huddle there if she wanted more warmth or was frightened. I was very worried at first having just the one chick but she has done well & is now almost 9 weeks old.

When I used red lamps, I found I needed a regular light in the daytime too. That way it hets them on a day/night cycle so they can sleep.HOWEVER I'm with you on using brooder plate instead. The bulbs got way too hot most of the time.

Very cool! I made my own version with a couple of seed starting heat pads and some chicken wire. I shaped the chicken wire into a cave with the back & sides sitting on one heat mat and the front edge arched about 3 inches high. The second mat laid across the top of the “cave.” When they were cold they went further back, closer to “mama’s” warmth. I was able to reshape the front as they grew to make it taller. It worked great, but got pretty messy. The plates definitely look like a great investment!

I use pots of heated water set on bricks , and suitable folded blankets stacked on the lid of the pot.to hold the heat in. Using 2 ... large stock pots... swapping the colder one to the wood stove or a burner on the cook stove as needed.

@@RainCountryHomestead I also use the Red heat lamp. I bought it because the books I have didn't have a brooder plate option. And once I learned of the brooder plate, we'll let's just say, I'm too thrifty to be redundant. The chicks do sleep at night, just not always huddled together. Some just drop where they stood and aplay out like they are dead. Scared me at first, I thought I had roasted some chicks, but checked the temp at their level and it wasn't too hot plus there were cooler places in the brooder they could go. I did do redundant safety measures including multiple points of fixating the lamp as well as putting wire around the lamp outside of the lamp and a smoke detector in the room next to the brooder and had it in my bathtub.

I love my new heat plates for chicks. I bought them for the 30 chicks I had starting in February. Unfortunately, I took my trifield meter and tested it. The EMF's were really high - in the danger zone. This was on the ELF mode. I look forward to seeing how these now adult chicks fare.

I use a tote with the top that is cut out and I attached hardware wire on the top. I used a red lamp but I have them in the basement so I could not hear if the slept through the night. I would position the lamp over one end of the tote and with the wire there was not fear of a fire because it was never in the brooder. I now just buy chicks and put them under a broody hen. I have five chicks running around with my mother hen right now.

First time chick mama here...I bought a large like 19" x 15" I believe for my 8 lil peeps. Question the little brown chick you have there with the chipmunk looking marks, do you know the breed of bird that is? My local feed mill only states brown dual purpose and I'm trying to figure out what breed they are exactly and mine look a lot like that one in your vid. Other breed I got was the buff orphingtons...so adorable

I cannot say what all breeds are in her as she is mixed but she is part olive egger for certain. These chicks are about 6 weeks now and pretty sure I know which ones are males and which are females, though I may find out I am wrong in a few months, haha! But, if she is indeed a she, then she should lay olive eggs from what I understand, just like her mama

I've seen channels using plates that are at least twice the size of yours, so if you ever enlarge your flock and decide to get a second plate you could perhaps get a larger one, guessing one larger plate would use less power than two smaller ones, but don't know for sure. ...can you tell I left the comment before you got to the part about sizes? The larger ones I've seen were rectangular, sounds like the ones you mentioned were all square...different brands, I imagine.
