I love this type of older movie as well! A funny subgenre of this that I like is "giant swarms" like Empire of the Ants.

I can get down with monster movies from all eras but you're right there is a very specific level of charm from the classics!

I just love monster movies, despite era. Give me something fun and cheesy like “THE CLAW” or something gritty and dark like Cloverfeild. Just need me a good set up and understandable/understandable adjacent human characters and i’m dandy.

I find myself more drawn to classic movies in general, monster movies included. Something about the old stuff is just overall better. Heck, even the political movies handled their politics better than almost everything that gets political today.

Oh, I definitely get that! Aside from the classic Godzilla films, I love the Harryhausen films and other movies like THE BLOB, REPTILICUS, etc., especially because of how these movies weren't afraid to *show* the monster! In color, B&W, academy, CinemaScope, etc. And they were absolutely spectacular. These days, SHIN GODZILLA and, to a point, the 2014 movie, are the best giant monster films in recent years. SHIN GODZILLA, especially! Not only because it makes its one title monster extremely remarkable with Hollywood-style FX techniques, but the photography around him is breathtaking, colorful, and dramatic! Oh, that, and Godzilla gets to be in broad, realistic daylight (and different conditions; dusk, night, rainy day, etc.)! The problem I've had with Hollywood monsters is how plainly uncomfortable Hollywood is with the monsters, and it shows in the movies. (Shakycam, almost strict nighttime, concealed by the elements, etc.)

I'm definitely of a classic-era bent when it comes to most things. As is the case with a lot of other media, today's genre films tend to be bloated and hollow compared to the frankly elegant simplicity of what came before. They just don't have the same soul. The old stuff isn't flawless by any means, but there's an undeniable comfort in them that you just can't get anywhere else. And it's worth considering that what we consider "cheesy" nowadays is simply due to the standards of the day. Name any modern monster movie and you can find just as much "cheese" as your standard black and white monster flick, although, being more fresh, it hasn't had quite enough time to age. I would wager that virtually none of what's being made today will age nearly as well as the classics you're talking about.
