In today's video I am talk about why I prefer quartz watches. I find quartz watches to be more practical on a day to day basis, and usually at a cheaper price compared to there mechanical counterpart. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with the radio controlled and solar powered G-Shock GWM5610 as well as the 9F Grand Seiko SBGT035. These quartz watches have opened my eyes to how amazing quartz can be. You also don't have to worry about servicing costs, accidentally magnetizing movements, and variations in accuracy. Yes, mechanical movements come with a certain level of excitement and romance that some quartz simply cannot match, but there are some amazing quartz watches out there that need to be considered. There have been some amazing quartz watches from luxury brands such as the Rolex, Audemars Piguet, Omega and more.

Imagine you went to a Porsche dealership, and they showed you a car with beautiful finishing: hand stitched full grain Italian leather seats, Axminster carpets, stunning depth of gloss on the paintwork, that kind of thing. But when you test drive it, it does 0-60 in twelve seconds and maxes out at 85mph. And if you don't drive it at least twice a week you have to charge the battery or it won't start. When you query this, the salesman tells you it's normal because it actually has a steam engine, and starts blathering on about "the romance of steam". That's how I feel about mechanical watches.

Reminds me of a 30 year old BMW 7 series I had a few months ago, leave it a week,out of power. Fuel economy slightly above average 30 years ago, pretty bad for today Great luxury, road feel and a heavenly sounds. But so many possible fault points around in the car making it unreliable. Had a great engine that is a joy to use. But can't say the car was practical.

Same here, I jumped on the automatic-train back in 2016 with a cheap Seiko 5. I really thought the watch could outlive myself like everbybody says. Well, lo and behold, the watch only lasted for about 2 years before something in it broke and it needed a service that was 3x the price of the watch. I've since then gone back to wearing quartz watched exclusively.

I wore mechanical watches for 20 years, but now I've sold most of them and have switched to quartz. Grand Seiko 9F, Citizen A060 and several Omegas. I love being able to "service" them myself- change the battery and gaskets. I think a lot of folks don't like quartz because they don't really know how they work and are mystified. Quartz clocks have been around for almost 100 years. The basic principles of electricity, batteries, capacitors have been known since the time of Breguet. The principles of resonant circuits, motors and piezoelectricity were known long before Rolex was even a company.

Spot on! That is exactly how I feel. I have a 30 plus watch collection mostly quartz, but I do appreciate the 4 mechanical and 3 automatics I have, the quartz are great especially my new favorite out of the bunch the Q Timex! No matter how much you pay, you can't beat the accuracy of a quartz. I also like the fact I can change the battery myself. The watch snobs out there are missing a lot of great watches when they look down on quartz without really experiencing how great they really are. However, it is to our benefit because we get awesome watches that are much less expensive than their mechanical counterparts and they are just as beautiful.

Yeah so many people are missing out on a lot of great watches because of the stigma and it’s annoying. A lot of people will automatically dismiss someone’s watch purchase if it isn’t mechanical. I think people should always buy what they want and show respect to others and what they value in a watch.

Totally agree. I would say I like mechanical and quartz equally, there is a place for both. Unfortunately there is a lot of snobbery in our hobby that is immediately dismissive of quartz watches as 'not proper watches'. A lot of anti-quartz enthusiasts claim that mechanical watches are, ahem, 'like living things' or 'have a soul'. Absolute nonsense, they are inanimate objects as all watches are. As a biology graduate I can confirm that no animal living or extinct contains a mainspring, gear train or balance wheel. Cheers.

I agree with what you say spot on. I think the whole “mechanical has a soul” thing is sometimes referring to the craftsmanship and work put into some of these high end mechanical movements by hand. However plenty of the “regular” common movements we see are not as hand crafted as many people assume. They aren’t all hand finished like a Patek.

@@JackOnWrist Good point. I also think the peculiar notion that the wearer is 'feeding' a mechanical watch by winding or through the movement of the wrist comes into it, I have seen this referred to on watch forums. The thing is you could say the same about quartz watches which are fed through battery changes or solar energy . . . like a plant! Maybe the mechanical-only brigade should save their money and settle for a Citizen Eco-Drive and a Tamagotchi instead?

In most instances, quartz movements generally tend to be more durable, when it comes to the everyday bumps and drops. Apart from the practical time keeping point of view, quartz watches can also be viewed as a sentimental piece of jewellery. Purchased for a spouse, or for a special occasion. It depends on how the recipient views a watch.

I have several quartz watches, even some nice ones. I'd kill for the Grand Seiko mentioned in the video. Also agree - a spot on overview of quartz watches. Don't forget to mention the Bluetooth functionality of some quartz watches (like some Casios) which make them even more accurate then the best Seiko quartz-watch technology simply by daily synchronisation with your mobile phone time. Better and simpler tech than older atomic clock radio synch.
@louisbrandt5386

I totally agree, quartz watches are practically and functionally superior - mechanical watches have been obsolete for decades. They are much more accurate, more robust, generally slimmer, longer power reserves (months/years as opposed to merely hours), more varied complications, generally easier to acquire, don’t require servicing as much if at all and can be just as well, if not better finished, than most mechs. The watch world is full of social-climbers, wealthy imbeciles and show-offs - most have no real interest in watches at all, for them it is about how much it cost, what they can get for it and whether or not they think people will be envious of their purchase so they can massage their damaged egos, they buy mechanical because those watches cost more and that is pretty much it for them. The quartz crisis would not have happened if quartz watches were not better. I love all watches, I used to be a quartz snob but not anymore.

Swiss marketing is most of it. That and there are bigger margins on mechanical compared to quartz, because they can simply charge more for them(not unlike when quartz first came out when they were significantly more expensive than mechanicals and more "hand made" too). Like you said there's a big difference between a cheap all plastic quartz module and a high end one like Seiko's 9f, just as there's a difference between a basic ETA mechanical movement and a Patek. Up until quite recently Rolex's Oysterquartz was of a higher quality than their other inhouse mechanical movements and far more innovative. In most watches out there the mechanical movement is a rattled off in the hundreds of thousands per annum industrially made item and pretty inexpensive for the manufacturers. But again due to marketing they can charge much higher margins on them. The single biggest advantage with mechanical movements is they can in theory go on for centuries because they can be repaired. Quartz can't. Well they probably can be if society doesn't go full apocalypse. 😀
@JackOnWrist
@JackOnWrist 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah you are right. It’s comes down to marketing and perception. There was once a time when quartz was new, exciting, and more expensive then mechanical. The comfort of being able to fix the movement and have it go on for centuries is definitely a really a huge point for mechanical. Some quartz models are serviceable just like mechanical but I it’s sorta rare. I hope more serviceable quartz movements come out and gain the respect of collectors as time goes on.
@paulc9588
@paulc9588 3 жыл бұрын
I think slick marketing and the desire to push prices up started a trend against quartz watches. There was a huge dash to quartz in the 1970s/1980s and then in the 1990s/2000s a push back towards mechanical as the 'next big thing'. Trends are cyclical, driven by marketing and the media to make people keep on buying new things. If quartz is portrayed as unfashionable and mechanical the reverse then a lot of potential buyers are not going to bother with quartz even if it is actually the better option for them.
@JackOnWrist

@@paulc9588 I guess that’s the main thing that is sad. Some people won’t get what’s best for them, instead getting what they are told to get. I’m sure many people who could have benefited from a quartz bought a mechanical instead because it’s what’s “better.”

Quartz watches easily outperform automatic watches with regard to accuracy and efficiency...plus they're much easier to maintain over the years and I speak from experience. All my Seiko watches eventually either gained too much time over a day or lost too much time over a day. Quartz watches are also technological marvels, like automatics...they just tell time much more accurately and efficiently than their older counterparts. And that's what progress is all about. What's the point of being nostalgic for a product that just doesn't do the job all that well???

The watch I were most the time nowadays it’s either my Seiko five SRPD 51 automatic watch, a Hein dollars Seaghost divers watch, I thought this was having some issues and I’m sending it back for a new one, or my ports American aviator watch the same one that was advertised for a while by the guy from pawn stars what was a brown leather strap. Other watches in my collection that I currently have with me, the only ones I don’t wear very much are my quartz swatch Q2 as I’m mostly using it as a dress watch, And a polo association quartz watch on a simulated brown leather strap they made me use it for where I’m dressing up and want to bring a slightly more formal watch than my Citizen Seiko or divers watch with my navy suit. I really like the argument you're making for quartz watches. I was one of those guys in the previous video saying I wouldn't pay this or that for a quartz watch. Although, I must say, my opinion is beginning to change. There's a lot your shopping for in a watch (or should be) besides the movement. Materials, function, and the heritage of the watch; most of these you pointed out in the last video that really resonated with me. I had to ask myself if I really think a quartz watch isn't worth more than $100 to $500 and you've made a compelling argument to really look at that outlook again. In retrospect I say, yes, I would pay well over a few hundred dollars for quartz depending on the brand and features of the watch.

After all, it’s your money and I respect what you want to do with it. I just feel as if within the community there is a general stigma with quartz that can be a little unfair at times. From the start of my collecting journey a few years ago to now, I have see the bias to mechanical. It’s not wrong to go with mechanical everytime, but for me there are lots of situations where a nice quartz does the job great and at a lower cost.

This depends on the situation. People who buy watches mainly have one or more of the following purposes: practicality, aesthetics, status symbol, and sentiment. If it is for practicality, then it is natural to pursue precision, convenience, and minimal maintenance, then quartz watches are a good choice; If it is for jewelry or decoration, then the type of movement does not matter; If it is for showing wealth, then as a luxury Well-known brand mechanical watches are the first choice; And if it is for sentimental reasons, such as liking the story of the brand or product, commemorating someone or something, then the idea itself is more important than the watch.

I bet john harrison the longitude man would love the quartz watch. He would admire its extreme electronic complexity its durability and accuracy. He would be impressed that it could then be reproduced at a low cost. He might see it as a miracle of the age. Perhaps he would then continue in his quest to perfect the mechanical movement. A worthy pursuit. Both are surely things to admire.

I'm just intrigued by the ability of a mechanical watch to function without a battery, in an age where almost everything around us is dependent on a power source. It's of course "powered" by a human, but the whole discussion is highly sentimental anyway. Nobody wears a hand wound movement because it's practical, but for some it's such a habit to wind their watch every day, that it's not an inconvenience. Automatics even less so. People are protective of what they like, so you have people that wear no watches at all, then the question of the type of movement, the brand and the specific models. I believed we can all peacefully co-exist 😄😉. Would be interesting to hear your opinion on Spring Drive, as a GS enthusiast! I think it's the best of both worlds and I absolutely love the sweeping seconds hand

Personaly, I prefer quartz over mechanical watches , the reason is not about the inaccurate of mechanical watches. For me an entry grade run +/- 30 sec a day or a high end run +/- 2 sec a day doesn't make any difference, as they needs to reset the time with time after time that matters, while a low end quartz watch can be had only one set and forget about it , and with a regular battery will give you at least 2 of the hassle free years. And you can replace the battery in almost every where, any time, some free time in a day on site without hassle, because you still can check the time though your Iphone that everyone had it in hand today. A quartz watch is perfect for my daily beater, I have a Wenger Swiss military quartz, 100m water resistant, sapphire coated crystal and under $100, the accuracy is amazing within one minute in a whole year, and all I need is set the date in every two months. I also love the charming of old artifact of mechanical watches, I have a skeleton mechanical watch just for fun and only wear it on some special formal occasions, you never get any trouble if you're a minutes too early or too late for the party 😀.

After getting into watches and acquiring a couple of automatics, while I love them I have come to the same conclusion as you. The thought I had is - while my automatic SARY057 keeps fairly reliable time now, in the future say 5 years or so I will likely need to get it serviced; the service itself would likely cost as much as the watch cost. it is a real conundrum - when that time comes, do I get it serviced or just buy a new watch? You don't have this problem with quartz and honestly if you care about amazing movements, you have good options for amazing quartz movements like a Grand Seikos 9F movement.

The best of both worlds are the early 1970s anologue Quartz watches made by Seiko they were over engineered and are quartz with moving pats that can be stripped down and repaired, there are plenty of beautiful watches 50 years old and still going strong, some cost more than a Rolex submariner mechanical watch back then. I like the fact that quartz can be thinner than mechanical watches and look sleeker on the wrist.

How can something that you change every 2 years and costs $10 really be an issue?
@Microwave414
@Microwave414 6 ай бұрын
@@bikeman123 Depends on the watch to be exact, A cheapo watch should have a back you can pop off with a knife and replace the bettery yourself or a timex q/swatch is not a big issue, one coin and you can swap your own battery. If it has a gasket and requires an actual watch opening tool and partial disassembly of the watch band then that is going to be more than what people are willing to deal with typically and take it to a watchmaker or jeweler. In most situations they will consider this a service and while they will swap the battery out they will also try to get you to do other things or just call it a service in general and charge more than just $10 to replace the battery. Before you know it it's about $50-70 or more every two years. For a lot of people that's the price of a new watch so why bother? With solar or kinetic watches you service it at least once every 12-15 years which to me easily pays off the difference after maybe the 2nd service. Now, I assume people who are commenting on videos like this are more aware but you have to think about the average person who wouldn't know... Lol honestly this is assuming they would even buy a quartz watch now days and not a smart watch every other year for $300 so maybe it's redundant in 2023. At least it's not that. Personally I'll stick to my mechanical watches. I just love watching them work.

Sort of making my own modified watches (broken stuff from ebay) at the moment which I care about. A mechanical watch wouldn't give me the same now. Dude… I bought the Casio f91w in prison… when I went in after accepting a plea deal on June 7th, 2019. I received the watch July 9th of 2019. I remember the day because it was my mothers bday and telling her on the phone my watch came lol. It’s now January 28th, 2023. I just found the watch in the drawer of my china cabinet and it was only 7 seconds off 🤣. The date was still good and everything. I forgot I had taken a screw out of it and tossed it back there. I sealed her back up and rinsed her off in the sink. I threw everything else out to cleanse myself of the horrible 2 years I endured in that filthy place. For some reason I kept that Casio and I’m weirdly elated about it. Almost 4 years on and it’s still keeping immaculate time, despite physical abuse. I disagree with your premise that people love mechanical watches mostly for the “romance”. Mechanical watches have three distinct advantages over quartz: lifespan, variety of complications, and value retention. When talking about entry level dress watches or even chronograph, quartz is an ideal way to get a lot of watch for little money. But a watch is for more than telling time. It’s jewelry. A quartz watch is like costume jewelry when compared to an automatic.
@JackOnWrist
@JackOnWrist 2 жыл бұрын
I agree with the advantages you listed. The only thing I would say is that a quartz watch is NOT like costume jewelry, or at least not every one. A movement such as the 9F quartz from grand seiko is truly a engineering masterpiece. It is well finished, innovative, 20+ years in the making, and even has a 50 year service interval. That movement alone disqualifies every quartz from being “costume jewelry” at least in my opinion.

Value retention? Yes if it is Rolex, AP, or Patek. But, you need to factor in cost of routine service. Lifespan?
