"Are you going to cover 5th and 6th edition?"
I get asked this question frequently in the comment section on this channel. The answer started out as "I'm definitely going to do it because Shadowrun is awesome in all forms!" Then it morphed to "I'll probably do it but I don't know when" before becoming "Maybe whenever I can find the time." Now, though the answer has become...complicated. This video finally explains once and for all why I won't be covering 5th or 6th edition Shadowrun.
Probably...maybe...

Here is what I would like to see: 1) A video on what Net 10 is and how it actually works in play. 2) How does combat work in 1st edition, compared to 2, and 3rd? What are the key differences in each edition? Going through an example would be great! 3) Same for Magic. The talk over 5th & 6th is that Magic is taking a lead role. How does it work in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd edition? How do you make an effective mage in these editions? How does it compare to 4th? How does magic work in combat? What types of spells are there? 4) You mentioned Decking & Rigging are more simplified in 4th. How does it work in the first three editions? How does this differ from 4th? Can you provide a game-play example of decking in the first three editions? How did the wireless matrix effect decking? 5) How does gear change from 1st - 4th? What are the most popular items in each edition for players to get? How does their use change (based on rule changes)? For example, a sword may seem basic, but 6th doesn't add Strength to the roll, while it did in 5th edition. Are there any significant changes between editions that may make melee weapons more appealing than ranged weapons? How about pistols vs rifles vs machine guns? 6) Can you do more in-depth lore videos about events (big or small) that occurs in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th editions? WE hear about these events at a high summary level, but the details start to be left out. Great job on the channel and thanks for listening!

I run 4th because the rules are a lot easier for people to get into, and chronologically it's pretty close to 3rd (the edition with the best setting and lore) so I find it a good compromise.

I will grant that the Shadows in Focus sourcebooks (pretty sure those are 5th) are pretty good, but I haven't heard much else good with 5th edition. Even less with 6th. Seems Catalyst doesn't really know what to do with Shadowrun.

I'm glad that you discuss Shadowrun as a system as a whole and how it has changed over time. I'm recently getting into running 4th Edition just because I got the pdfs from someone and always wanted to get deeper into the game, so hearing the changes over time and thoughts on where it's going is incredibly helpful!

There's a group that had a Kickstarter for their own Shadowrun clone called Sinless. It succeeded and perhaps when it comes out perhaps you can do a review on it since, according to the developers, their game uses the Shadowrun Third Edition model for their mechanics.

Second is still the best edition. With a few tweaks from Third. The FASA era of Shadowrun will always be the best. The Catalyst Era seems to have lost the flavour and heart of Shadowrun

It's pretty easy to locate the older editions on ebay. Might have a bit of a challenge getting the core book at a decent price. I had to hunt a bit for my 2nd edition copy. Most of the supplements have been really easy to find, though, with the exception of some of the more obscure ones.

I just hope the 50th Anniversary finally resets the timeline so that magic comes back in the future instead of some weird alternate timeline. (Played 1st ed on release and loved the idea of magic returning in the future, but when reality caught up with the timeline, the magic in the lore was gone)

I've played since 1st ed, remember making up rules for social /hobby skills, which were added in later, loved the game, going to play to play some with my 13 year old son, might stick with 2nd or 3rd ed, introducing him too more different games, other than D&D, and its clones, going to do some Call of Cthulhu and Rune Quest too, possibly Space 1888 and Warhammer Fantasy rpg

I played 1st/2nd edition and recently picked up copies of 3rd and 4th edition. 3rd still feels like old Shadowrun to me. For rule systems - 1st seems a bit undercooked and 3rd feels a bit bloated. 2nd is in a sweet spot. Its the setting and lore that ties it all together. 4th edition - first impressions are the book is ugly. The font choices, the green pages, the FanPro logo on the spine... - it doesn't work for me at all. The rule changes. I'll never play it.

Personally, when I finally got to play shadow run, after close to a decade of fantasizing about playing it, it was 2nd edition that I was introduced to. I played with another group that ran fifth Ed, and although I liked a few of the things about the new system, the timeline just didn’t feel very Shadowrun and I just noticed I wasn’t having as much fun as I had before. After deciding to run my own game and doing plenty of research, I decided to settle on the gem of editions - 3rd. I’m not gonna say it’s not quite a bit of work, and I feel like I’m always learning a new rule, but the timeline and history is phenomenal and just sucks you in to the point where you almost don’t care that the system is a little heavy handed from time to time. I’m just grateful somebody is covering the stuff that I enjoy instead of going with the main stream status quo.

Any chance you might review the new/return of the Card Game?
@TheSixthWorld
@TheSixthWorld Жыл бұрын
Possibly. I've looked at the old card game in the past (not on the channel, just out of curiosity) and I have to admit the newer version looks intriguing. I could see that being one of the 6th edition adjacent products I take a look at (similar to the Rogues Lineup deck).
@Darkest209
@Darkest209 Жыл бұрын
@@TheSixthWorld Well just to be clear, while the new Card Game is connected to 6th edition, the game is firmly seated into 2nd and 3rd Edition. I think they did this because 3rd Edition was about to hit the streets in the late 90s and it was sold as a cross promotion. The CCG came out in 1997 and has a 2058 setting, bridging 2nd and 3rd edition with Locations, Runners, Challenges and Objectives. This can be seen in the art on the cards as well as some of the game play. The Decker gear is the biggest clue. The Cyberdecks and lingo we lost after the crash in '64 are alive and well in this "Upgradable" card game. Along with the programs the Deckers use to hack. The older game didn't have Technomancers which would kill any reason to play most Cyberdecks. (Which wouldn't be a bad thing IMO. This game can be a little card heavy when it comes to deck building.) That's not to say the New version which has a 2080 setting won't bridge that massive gap from '58 to '80 with at least a small army of new Runners and Gear to play with. I would say the Shadowrun CCG took up the Mantel from Vampire Jahad and design a lite RPG/CCG. While tournament games could be setup for 50 minute rounds with smaller win conditions. I would say my average 75-100 point games could last 1.5-2 hours. In fact my last game played with my buddy Joel at a local Applebees had to push almost 2.5 hours before one of us reach 100 points. (I belive Joel won that game) Of course you have to add in the catching up and drinks to the game play. There always someone stopping us to ask what we're doing? It would take 2 old guys playing a CCG in a restaurant to make me popular. With no time limits, turns tend to take as long as they need. Plus reading the cards hasn't gotten any easier with age. The 1st ed game has weaknesses like any other game that didn't have enough time to fix'em. This new version claims to have dealt with these issues, I'm hoping this is true. For me the biggest problem with the game is with 'Fame and Nuyen'. Famous Rockers turned out to be the stable funding for Shadowrun teams in the card game. Which seems odd. I always felt that a Shadowrun team sticking to the Shadows wouldn't live long if they were always making contact with Rocker friends to help with the bills. Or at least the Rockers wouldn't live very long. That's how many of my games turned out. Nothing like the Ganger Lord Torgo hitting the streets only to cave in the heads of my Elf Rocker group and slowing my game down to a crawl. Basically for me the CCG was a poorman's RPG and allowed me to get my Shadowrun fix by flipping some cards. A few Bad-Hands worse dice rolls and you can't mistake that feeling of running the Shadows.

It's nice to have some coverage on 4e edition. Do you plan to make some actual play or gm advice/tutorial ? I would die for some gm advice like how to handle the matrix and how to make it fun for all the team

GM advice is likely. Tutorials possibly. I am planning on doing a deep dive into Shadowrun 2nd Edition, something I might repeat for 3rd and 4th editions. Actual play is probably not going to happen. Just don't have the time or tools to do it unfortunately.

I running with Shadowrun 6e and while i like it , i homebrewing my adventures and look up more stuff from older editions because the adventures of 6e are mostly bad . I will get 3rd and 4th edition too because i heard high praises from those editions . Shadowrun 6e for me is the perfect game to homebrew and put out my own cyberpunk-adventures right now with the inspiration of older Editions tone and approach of it more dark and twisted world instead of cyberpunk with shiny sprinkles on it . But i agree with most people that Shadowrun 6e is not the best and its more for homebrewing instead playing it by the rules . And the art of 6e is either ugly or way too lame while bei g try-hard at best .

Having played SR 1st edition, I can tell you it proves that if you have a cool concept and art, some good writing, and euthanistic players, you don't need a working combat system. But it sure helps which is why I appreciate the later game mechanics. Shadowrun 6e looks a lot faster to run. Still so far none of the 5e and 6e campaign/plot books have really caught my imagination, so I can appreciate your reasoning and look forward to your early SR coverage. Nothing against them, but I think getting in on the ground floor is more exciting. That said, they have released Shadowrun 6e stats to so many of the 2050 adventures including Harlequin. I think making full VR need a hard wire connection and not putting anything critical accessible via wireless will do the trick. See you in the 2050s!

I played SR 1st and 2nd ED back in the day. Didn't play for many years, then was invited to play a remote game during covid. I wanted to play a Shaman, and the GM didn't know what that was! I have put approx zero energy into modern SR. If I do get an opportunity to play newer editions, I will turn them down.

Feel free to delete this comment. is anything past 4th E just "modern audience" D&D tier? I read the books (80s-90s roc books), never got to play the ttg sadly as I'm not a sociable person. I'm so anti "modern audience"...
@TheSixthWorld
@TheSixthWorld Жыл бұрын
I don't know that it's "modern audience" but both 5th and 6th edition have had mixed reception. Some people love them, some people hate them. It seems to be more an issue with the system and CGL's editing (or lack thereof). Like I said in the video I just don't like how the timeline progresses past 3rd edition. The Ghostwalker stuff in particular I thought was dumb.
