I did the same thing. I wasn't a teacher (I was a behavioral therapist for children who have autism) However I felt the same way, leaving my kids to go work with other people's kids. It just didn't sit well with me. Now I'm a homeschooling SAHM of 3. I wouldn't trade it for anything.

I can relate to this on so many levels. I felt the exact way. I too now have three children. My children are fairly young, but I'm happy to be home with them. I taught high school for two years. I don't miss it.

I totally felt this!! Only been teaching 6 months and while I feel much appreciated by parents and staff for having working with their children , I also feel guilt for not being to support my own children in their academics because of being so tired when getting home. This video is so validating . Thank you for sharing your personal thoughts and feelings.

I appreciate you sharing this. I’ve taught 11 years in a rough area of DFW and I related to everything you said. Not many people are able to verbalize the bizarre feeling of morphing into “teacher mode” in your own home. I, myself, am not contemplating leaving education. But one thing that seems to be left out of the conversation is pension/retirement. I know a LOT of burnt out teachers who would love to leave but they’ve already sunk in 15-20 years and they just can’t fathom leaving that pension behind. ETA: side note- have you ever thought about narrating audiobooks? Your voice is so soothing!

OMG! I just started watching your channel and stumbled upon this video. I 've been watching your sister for years. Your story is exactly the same as my story. I have a masters degree in special ed. I worked in the school system on and off from 2012-2019. I was dropping my kids off at daycare and at times they would be there from 6-6pm and have always felt like I was letting them down as a mom. At first I used to say that I can't leave my students, but as I noticed more and more how my job was affecting my life as a mom, and how I was treating my own children I decided I needed to quit. I was always exhausted and would have extreme anxiety when Monday is approaching. Also, just like you I would act like a dictator at home and expected my children to behave at all times This let them to have anxiety and would even seem scared to speak to me in fear that they would get in trouble. I am proud to say I took a leave of absence as well and started homeschooling my children and it was the best decision that I could have ever made. My life and my children's life has changed for the better. I had to changed what I do; I become a jane-of-all trades by using other talents that God gave me, but not being in the education field has given me the flexibility to stay home with my kids. I not sure I'm ever going back.

I am not a teacher or home teacher, just a mom who loves helping her kids succeed. My daughter's teacher has a daughter the same age. She is an incredible teacher and I always wonder how she can be so awesome to our kids and still have the stamina for her own little one. I try my best to show her as much appreciation as possible because I know it has to be hard.

It's great that you have realised this now. I did not get this until my children were teenagers. I sacrificed quality time with them which resulted in burnout and personal home-life challenges. Good for you. Take care of yourself and your family.

I think it's important to make a little pie chart of our time with our kids. Sometimes you think you're with them, but if they're at practice with a coach, they're not with you even then. . . I love kids. I love other people's kids. BUT, I needed to be with my own children more. It felt unfair and imbalanced to be with other people's kids too much. I never even got "Teacher of the Year." I was literally in survival mode and staying until dark with my 4 year old hanging out in the classroom with me. I even have a video of him falling asleep in my classroom beanbag chair. I posted it and said, "Just a few more weeks, buddy." I quit after I had my second baby the following month. My kids have always been homeschooled--really for many reasons. I think I would've ended up homeschooling anyway. However, the school shooting protocols (and lack of safety there) was THE thing at the time that pushed me out. My reasons have only grown. There are a TON of teachers turned homeschool moms. We are not alone. :)

This is what I'm going through. Been teaching for 16 yrs and I'm so drained. I have noticed the lack in my own children's life now because I've given so much of myself to my students. My children's grades started dropping and that was the wake up call for me. Thanks for sharing your story, it was confirmation for me.

Former teacher here. I totally agree with you 1000%!!!! I quit my teaching job when my 3rd child was born. I should of quit sooner. I stayed out of obligation knowing they needed me. The best part I was my 1st and 2nd Born pre k teacher. But I still wanted to be at home with them full time and yes on the weekends I had no energy to do anything with them. So I quit when my second born had to go to kindergarten. Now I'm homeschooling 4 kids which includes my 2nd Born my first born is a freshman in college. I did homeschool her 11th and 12th grade.

It’s SO interesting that all your observations are the same as what I have. I retire for the service in a few months and am a certified teacher. The original plan was for me to be a sub so I could spend more time with my kids. As the time has been getting closer and closer, we finally decided that homeschooling would be the best option for our family. It most aligns with what our plans for their future.

I totally agree. I left the classroom when my now 8 year old was a baby and I was carrying my baby girl. I missed my son so much during the day when I was teaching. I became a not so great teacher by the end cause I was exhausted in my second trimester teaching H.S. with a baby and a 4th grader at home. I also want to add to this convo that my younger kids have such a stronger relationship because they are homeschooled. Not only would I be away from them for 9 hrs a day if they were in school, they would be away from each other all day. They have each other and we are loving it.

You are saying all that I've been feeling...I have given so much to other people's children and feel I've neglected my own. My child is now in the grade wherein all these tests are going on and I feel I have let her down. I have considered homeschooling but I also need to be able to take care of my family...really at a crossroad...just don't know what to do.

Thanks for sharing. I can relate so much. As an educator working outside of the U.S., I think what would solve this problem is to raise the bar (Master's as a minimum), raise pay slightly, and include housing. This is what they do in Asian countries.

Your story sounds almost exact to mine. Instead of asking to teach a different grade I asked to get a part time position that they denied. The straw that broke the camels back was when I was pumping in a closet and people kept walking in on me! I felt way too disrespected.

Akeeba, I think what is missing today is a stay-at-home parent with young children. I believe this is a contributing factor for today's mental and emotional status of children of this generation. Stay-at-home parents allow children a lot more life exposures and the chance to emulate life attitudes of the parents rather than contaminated with mentality of whoever adults the children are at their mercy.

Oh home????????? Yeah many teachers here in Fiji islands either living in their own homes which they bought through loans from financial institutions. So when they reached 55 years old retirement age their homes already paid off really. Yet depends on land leases they on. If they on native land lease and crown land lease they keep paying land leases annually even though house is paid off. Paying city rates as well. It depends on what type of land reallyyyyyyyyyy. Most prefer renting out with fellow teachers or friends that worked until they get married or want to settle down with their spouses or partners. They either go buy a property or some keep renting. Whichever they find enjoyable mostly. Meself here in Fiji islands back in 1999 first time worked as teacher. We were single most of us so we got to have a post to boarding schools. Meself stayed at hostle with students kids. So yeah I had two jobs. Teach academic subjects same time look after kids the girls as it is All girls Methodist School. We had to do jobs like study supervision. Dinner Lunch Breakfast with kids students. Also Prayer Room time duties other work really. Take them to school concerts from hostel to the national grounds back. All those type of boarding schools work. Yet we not paid wages for that really. Only allowance which is like around 360 Fiji dollars per term which is 14 weeks 2 terms and 13 weeks 3rd term. So around one grand and few dollars per year. We had rooms each. The hostle administration provides beds drawers desks chairs even dressers. Only thing we took is clothes shoes and teaching stuffs. It was great because rent paid only about $50 fiji dollars per month so yeah cheaper. We were like that time getting around $517 fiji dollars per fortnight for academic teaching high school students that is. In a way I found it more than enough really. I always send home 350 fiji dollars every two weeks for mother mostly. Like now they both passed away so freedom. Late daddy was getting wages he did other work even after 55 years old and getting military pensions every 2 weeks So yeah life was great all the time.

Go mummy Akeeba Maze go. Yeah many reasons for just leaving teaching altogether. Most teachers who are women mothers they are born teachers. They just love to be teaching even though the wages ain't according to their qualifications and experiences. Like most remain in Primary School Teaching even though pay ain't the same like there USA. Most primary school teachers migrated to developed countries decades after decades just because of that. Good wages and yes food is cheaper there. So you see most of them just gained weight faster when they get their working visas and yes permanent residencies even citizenship already. It is that for most Fiji islands GRADUATE teachers from Universities. Better pay and cheaper food prices as according to the pay. Yet when actually synthesize it. If they working there as teachers the food here is much cheaper for them again with that pay scale. Most others just yes went did further studies and worked elsewhere. Many of meself fellow high school teachers University graduates Bachelor of Education and Diploma in Education did just that. They went to do other jobs as they advertised in news papers and other medias. I think in USA is more better because you get good wages even at Elementary schools levels. Thus it is okay to be teaching either for ETERNITY or do homeschooling start a day Centre or any educational institution right. Well meself taught as well but paying meself own wages really. We were supplying pulp to make notes dollars like different provinces different currencies denominations depending on the need really. So yeah it was an adventure same time just to enjoy what teaching is like and left because of that really I went through cesarean birth and could not climb stairs. I found it hilarious again but I thought yeah teaching ain't for people like meself who only went because to be part of adventurous life really. Yet I enjoyed it though. Time when parents and guardians paid school fees. Everything was paid so it was worth it for students to gain knowledge. Anyways go mummy Akeeba Maze go. Oh meself mummy not a teacher she was more a Hospitality Tourism activities graduate from FIT Derreck of long ago 70s. She said I just went to enjoy the cooking and beverages making after that quit. I thing the only teacher like person is late daddy father was an Instructor Military so he did a lot of teaching in military stuffs really. You great teacher mummy Akeeba Maze keep on keeping on respect
