I actually knew a girl who auditioned for American Idol whenever it was in its prime on tv, and she didn't even make it past the producers. And it wasn't in regards of her talent because she's a fucking musical prodigy. They rejected her because she didn't have the "right look" for the show.

This is interesting, because you may have talent but you notice that they were not looking for talent, they were looking for someone to get even more views from thinking they would just bomb, this is one of the reasons people have a hard time to believe shows are real or anything like that, because usually they are not nowadays, all they want is money....but if you do audition again I wish you luck and hope you kick everyone's ass!

OMG same. My (weird) band Was called out of the blue a couple of years ago and asked to audition. We showed up to the audition where all of these poor people were waiting in line. We skipped signing in and waiting in line and auditioned immediately. We then auditioned in front of a bunch of other folks and did a q and a with a few people. They had us come back the next day where they filmed us pretending to sign in and pretending to wait in line and pretending to wait in the room with everyone... All of which we NEVER did the day before. Then they had us film a real interview where they basically fed us exactly what they wanted us to say. Later we were told we had to fly to another city and pretend we were auditioning there since there were already so many acts from our home city. In the end, we decided it was too creepy and not what we were all about. As you stated, it's all soooooo fake and a huge set up.

You are ENTIRELY speaking my language on this topic. I'm also a musician. These shows, before I knew much about them just simply gave me the creeps. I'd say "Yeah, she's really talented but why do I feel like I'm being violated right now?" I eventually came to realize that most of my favorite musicians would be voted right off of most of those shows and that they were focusing on a select few facets of music and performance and putting unrealistically high standards on those facets. The more I learned about the production of these shows the more I was completely grossed out.

These just sound like a bunch of excuses. I am a big supporter but this is a classic case of sour grapes. You're justifying why you bailed. I think you would have done ok on stage and it would have helped you! It's just frustrating because there are literally millions of people who would kill to have that offer that you received and you turned it down because you think they want to make a mockery of you? The fact is that you never know what these shows are looking for. In the last band I was in, we had an absolutely amazing singer, one of the best I've heard in fact. He tried out for American Idol just for fun one year, went all the way to the producer's round and then was told he was being cut because they were looking for more country singers for that particular season. They did offer him a meeting with their label A&R but he turned them down. It just go to show that even if you're incredible, you might not necessarily be what they're looking for at that time.

I believe you, and understand completely. No wonders Steven Tyler does not want to do American Idol nomore he says the same things, they got super ratings with him on the show.

Thanks for this! It's always great to get a reminder that the TV is all bs. And it's nice to hear you say I refuse to be part of it because of it. I wish people would be made more aware of it. i've had a similar shock about a similar show from our country. It was a reality show called "I want to be a flight attendant!" so it was a different theme all together, but the idea was the same: pick some girls, put them through training and have them compete against each other. The irony was i had only went through the same training myself (they were filming in my school with my trainers and teachers!) so I knew every single detail of how a flight attendant license is obtained and what kind of people the trainees and the trainers are. When I saw the show on TV i just couldn't believe how they had dramatized everything, how they butchered through reactions and processes and people I knew all too well. Some stuff was even completely made up by the producers and knowing what goes, as a legal procedure, in this niche, I was so disappointed. I kept watching just to make myself more aware of how fake things on TV are, but I'm sure people believed every bit of it because.... it's not exactly something that happens to everyone, stuff like this isn't common knowledge, so the show can tell any lie and people would just believe what they see.

Hello, I agree with you. I have also worked in the business so I know the games they play to get ratings. On the other side of things some of these shows have given some truly talented people a chance to get notice and get further into the business than they would get on their own. As you know, just like anyone who is in the business or wants to be, one of the most important things to do is get noticed and remain in the spotlight. Once people stop seeing you or forget about you, so goes your career. This is why you see actors/singers on red carpets or even on social media. Whether they do something good or bad, they get noticed and remain current in the public eye. In the business you never want to be forgotten. Don't you agree?

100% AGREED!! These shows are rigged, fixed, inappropriate, all of the above... ridiculous and despite what EVERYONE says I will NEVER - EEVVVVEEEEEERRRRR audition for any of them. Especially after Christina Grimmie's story: She was not an unknown. She had TONS of views, had put out an album, had original songs, had NO PLACE on a TV show meant for "up and comers," and look at what happened to her. It was a sad, sad thing that occurred, but it goes to show just how LITTLE the industry truly cares for their artists. She would have never lost her life had the show given a shit about her and provided her with some protection. These types of shows are awful, it's all about ratings in a dying medium, and I refuse to be a part of the machine.

i auditioned with Evan cole from american idol. Neither of us got picked because we didnt have the shock factor, its all about making fun of people on those shows or shocking people. i then auditioned for the voice and got a call back right before blind auditions the other lady got on because she was pregnant and they told me " you are talented but the judges expect to see a pretty girl, not someone whos pregnant"

You could always ask to do what you want to do on your own turf. Indicate that if you sign a contract still allow you to continue your line of living. If they say No it doesn't matter you have the same result as now, but if they say, Yes, that is a different ball game.

Totally agree with you. I've been doing Media Studies for the past 4 years, and you begin to see more and more how things are created for people with an increasing lack of dignity and honesty behind them. I remember in History class when my teacher showed us the music video of Maroon 5's Sugar, my teacher asked if my class thought the wedding surprises were real, and all my classmates bought into it, but I didn't and I stayed firm with my belief. After the video had been up for a while, my Dad informed me about how most of those weddings were staged - they were fake. Yes, the video was very nice and was a creative idea, but nothing will be able to beat something like that which is actually real - something that is honest. With shows like American Idol and *insert country's name*'s Got Talent, so much of the good acts seem to feed the show with sympathy and compassion for viewers to digest, and then also feed off the people who like what they do but appear ridiculous on stage to satisfy audiences with funny embarrassment and what not, or the occasional witty auditioner who's clearly been allowed on stage because of the reaction they'll receive. It's sad to see that these shows and medias rely more on tapping into our emotions, but do it so exploitively and surreptitiously.
