For the past 10 years there has been a question that I have been asked many times over: "Why do you use Blackmagic Cameras?”
This video is my answer.
This won’t be me telling you to go and get a Blackmagic camera, this will just me explaining why they suit the type of work I do and the way I shoot and I wanted to share my overall experience after 10 years of using the same brand, from the OG BMPCC to the latest BMCC6K FF.
This is also not a love letter to Blackmagic but I do appreciate what their cameras have able to do for me and that in turn made me fall in love with filmmaking even more.
I am also curious to know what Blackmagic cameras you are all currently using!
Let me know if you have any questions :).
Cheers,
Flo

How do you handle moving the camera without autofocus or a team to assist you? I have the original Blackmagic 6K camera, and while I love it, I've had shoots destroyed because of that. Any tips would be much appreciated

Also, I've been told that fx3 with prores RAW gives you as good images as with Blackmagic with added benefits of autofocus and low light. If you can also shed light on these it is much appreciated

I had a different experience though. I shot at a location once using an fs7, fs5 and various other sony cameras, with a crew. It was an unbelievably hot day, bright sunshine and the building we were in had green blinds and when we were outside we were having to nd up and the ir polluton was awful, worst I've seen. Anyway between fighting the ir pollution in the sony's and trying to get them to colour match to each other despite being on the same colour gamut. It was a nightmare (even with the colour passports). Skin tones were all over the show. 2 weeks later, I had to do an unrelated solo shoot on my own using my old 2.5k in the same locations and the same conditions. I shot it and went back to the edit with dread. I was shooting in pro res 422, so I prepared for another skintone/ir nightmare. It took me 5 minutes to sort out. Even today with my work we have an fx6 and 2 fx3's and I find there is a still a discrepancy in the footage colour matching and I really like those cameras. I feel much safer working with BM's.

I once owned the BMPCC4K. And I loved the look of the BRAW straight out of camera. I only switched to Sony because as a low budget/indie filmmaker, autofocus can be immensely helpful in run and gun situations as well as speeding up production. The BMCC6K looks like a fantastic camera. If BM comes up with a camera with PDAF, I would switch in a hard beat. That being said, I know that I don't need autofocus all the time. But, the power it provides can make a difference during production. And yes, the support from Blackmagic is better than most companies I've interacted with. I do see myself getting a BM camera again. I hope sooner than later. EDIT: To be honest, I've been looking at the Micro Studio G2 camera. It's sorta box shaped. I already have accessories such as a monitor and SSD from my BMPCC4K days. And it appears that the sensor has seen some improvement. It shoots 4K, but, that's not a problem. The footage samples I've seen from it are quite impressive. So, it may be a possible addition to my gear. :)

I absolutely love BM cameras, I have owned three in total, the P4K, P6K and 6K G2. Fantastic image quality and probably my favourite cameras of all time. However I have decided to sell my P6K and 6K G2 to purchase a Canon C70. I’m selling them because I have not had luck with this systems reliability. I really baby and take care of my gear, however, I have had to replace the IR Cut filter on my 4K, the screen on my 6K just went black and I had to get it replaced. My G2 which is still fortunately under warranty stopped powering on and I got it repaired as well, it came back 4 days ago. I bought into BM in 2020 and in 4 years I’ve had to repair three separate camera bodies. Fortunately, I’ve always had back up cameras so this didn’t hinder my work, however it has been annoying. I’m at a point in my career where I work almost every day and I need something more reliable. I think BM cameras are amazing and a lot of people haven’t had any issues with them at all but this wasn’t my case. I would still recommend them for an amazing image, ease of use and price point.

I work with various cameras, right now Sonys are my works main cameras for the type of corporate shooting we do. I only buy though, Blackmagic's for myself, starting with the original 2.5k ef ( which still to this day has my favourite image ). As you stated they suit me and make me want to shoot. I am lucky in that I get to work and make a living in this field and have done for a few decades now. What I really want to say though is I've also followed your journey and your development as a film maker over the years and I think your journey as story teller and visual artist is even more impressive. Well done and I look forward to seeing you develop further. You make me want to get working on my own personal projects. As to to the Blackmagic I'm currently using. I'm still loving the 6k Pro. It's going to take a lot to get me to but another camera as I still think it has an incredible image and does everything I want.

As a current and past owner of a few BM cameras, one of the most under rated cameras is the ursa g2 4.6 for commercial use it has been a dream and a work horse. The image is clean and beautiful. The 6k lines and even 4K bring the images to life, sure there are a few drawbacks but for the price to own unbeatable. I’ve been using the fx3 as well but image to image they are very different.

Hey FLo, love the video! I already mentioned being somwhat torn for the BMCC 6k and 6k pro for shooting weddings and commercial stuff, I think the BMCC 6k is out even as it doesnt shoot prores and BRAW for weddings would be a lot of data management. though I'd rather have the open gate feature. My other main concern is battery performance and I just don't want to go down the Vlock route. My other option is the X-h2s, though I am hoping that the make a BMCC6k pro With NDs and maybe a different form facotr though after owning the zcam i'd say the rigging gets in the way and I like shooting how you do. So i am sticking for Fuji for now but they're great cameras, its mental to think now we are inundated with so much choice! Another thing i'd like to see is a mode dial like the XH2s where you can swithc between frame rates and Aspect ratio super quick
@OfTwoLands
@OfTwoLands 5 ай бұрын
Glad you liked the video and thank you for sharing your thoughts as well!! IMO the 6K Pro is the most versatile because of the NDs but I do agree a new form factor would be beneficial for a lot of people and situations! On the Bm cameras you have the buttons at the back to change the frame rates or you can tap the main screen. The aspect rations are just a click away too in the main menu :)

@heartshapedfilms 5 ай бұрын
@@OfTwoLands ah that's pretty handy I've just always have liked the dlsrs mirrorless for having c1 C2 etc. and works in my head that I can just go to one dial and all my settings have changed! Having a different form factor would be good maybe a bit more modular could have room for a better evf and make that screen as an optional extra maybe a big micro camera with a handle. Dual cfexpress cards FF / s35 / NDs. with sdi 2 micro XLRs Though this kills the Ursa range for most.

Thanks!! I think I just meant in terms of their shortcomings and strengths. Great image and flexibility in terms of codecs as well their affordability make them able to create beautiful imagery for solo or small production, but the lack of certain features such as SDI, form factor and also better battery solution (Ursa excluded) might not make them the ideal choice for feature length content.

Great video! I currently have a rigged out 4k (with ext battery, matte box and nd filters, ext monitor etc.) and I am also not sure if it is worth the upgrade to a 6K G2, 6K Pro or 6K FF. Lots of the perks of the 6k are already in my rig and apart from the resolution, the image and look seems similar and not that of a HUGE difference? Or perhaps a 6K is more future proof and better for (short) narrative films? I don’t know for sure… I'm considering upgrade to 6K G2 over the other two, because the difference of the 6K Pro pretty much only is the built-in ND filter. But on the other hand… 6K FF is amazing as well. Choices, choices. Thank you!

Hi really enjoy your videos! Can I ask what your workflow is for the full frame 6K to work in FCPX? Love how stable your footage is.. do you use Gyro stabilization at all like Gyro Toolbox?

Honestly I like the color and everything. I wish they get mad to get AF and IBIS. Regardless I can work with it.

Great video! thanks! I’m curious why you think BM cameras are especially well suited for short form content or why they are LESS well suited for long form content. You talked about it at 7:19 and didn’t really get into why you think so…

Thank you!!

Why the RF mount? It is currently extremely limited with the lens selection. I’m not happy about having to get L Mount lenses but I feel that they made the right decision going for this mirrorless mount. I’m genuinely interested for your argument for the RF mount.

Not sure what to say haha! I’ve never had a problem with mine and I’ve filmed some pretty dark scenes. Even when there is noise it’s super easy to denoise in Davinci. Ive shared my settings in the NYC breakdown video ☺️👊

You like that Black Magic cameras aren’t made in the America? 😂, why? Now that RED was sold to Nikon, the US doesn’t have even one cinema / video camera company

Because I lived in Australia and am Australian so I like that they’re Australian and different yes! And I said America or China as in big powers especially for electronics and imagery. Red, GoPro and Kodak are American by the way.
