My wife and I sleep in the back of our 5th gen 4runner also. It be tight but in cold weather it is nice and cozy. We have to move stuff from the back to the front seats but we have that down. In the last year and a half we have spent over 40 nights in the back of the 4runner.

I can totally relate to your set up Grumpy. I just bought a new Tacoma long bed and put a topper on it. I built a bed platform inside. I really like the idea of being out of the elements and the added security. A ground tent or roof top tent would need to air out and dry out after a rain or snow. And like you mentioned, less time setting up and taking down tents. Also sleeping in my topper, there's no worries of those pesky little critters (mice) who seemed to move right in not long after you set up your ground tent lol. I also have a roof rack/basket on top of my topper and plan utilize that area for gear. 👍

All valid points! I actually like sleeping in the vehicle as well but now have an RTT. Best quote from the video is the "I'll respond to every comment unless you're a jackass." Love it!

I agree with all you said. I sleep in my Toyota FJ all the time. I also have a gazelle but a T3 as im a single person so its big enough for me. But I love to sleep in the FJ. Its no set up time and its cozy. I use the passenger side as my kitchen set up and sometimes will bring a small pop up bathroom tent if needed. Its perfect.

Thanks for the video. You just reinforced what we were already thinking. We have a 2 person platform in our 4runner, and love it so far. Now I'm regretting not having the remote start as I'm wanting to camp in winter now. Hmmmm....maybe I'll get some sort of after market, but I'm scared to have people messing with the electrics.

My 4Runner didn't have remote start so I got this and installed it myself: www.12volt.solutions/products/2010-2018-toyota-4runner-plug-play-remote-start-kit-g-key?_pos=2&_sid=1df66dc78&_ss=r Was pretty painless to install and unlike the factory remote start, it doesn't turn off the engine when you open a door.

I sleep inside my 4runner too with somewhat different sleeping configuration since I need to accommodate a dog crate next to my bed. I carry a rifle box with different gear and recovery ladders on a roof. I can still carry my kayak or SUP there. It wouldn't be possible with a roof tent unless something really short and light. Also, sleeping inside is quite stealthy. I can take a nap anywhere where setting up the rood tent would be suspicious.

I agree, I would most definitely sleep inside. I own a FJ Cruiser so I would be a bit more cramped, but it’s doable. Plus the roof top tent adds a bunch of weight up top. Your set is just perfect.

Thanks for the video! Coincidentally I have been considering an SUV tent for my Xterra…but since I’m kinda short anyway, I could probably just slide the drivers seat all the way forward and tilt the seat back towards the steering wheel and have plenty of room to comfortably stretch out. That definitely saves me the expense and added time of setting up and breaking down a tent. Thanks again!

I think you'll be happy with sleeping inside your Xterra. Every time I think of moving on to something else, I sleep inside my 4Runner and come to my senses.

Got a similar set up I my Lancruiser 200 series. I've got draws in the boot but when I fold the middle seats down and put a fordable ply platform over the top with tri fold mattress. It's great with so many different configurations. Can fold it all up and take middle row passengers. Just like you I love the insulation and security of sleeping I the truck. The twin turbo V8 Diesel will go anywhere in the bush with comfortable sleeping!

My wife and I do the same! I use the leveling app on my iphone to level the 4runner and I have leveling ramps to adjust where needed. I love that the back of the 5th gen is flat with the sliding tray. I have a Viper alarm remote start, didn’t even think about remote starting and heating the insidem of the cabin with the auto shutoff…great idea!

I’m currently sleeping in the back of my 4Runner. I cannot open the back hatch so I struggle to get out a side door. I’m about to solve that with a switch kit mod. I’ve also found it extremely difficult to get into the front seat from the back. Perhaps impossible if the front passenger seat is full of gear, which it usually is. I’m going to have to check out more of your videos to see how you’ve addressed these issues. Thank you for an interesting video.

My front passenger seat is usually full of gear as well. I am not that flexible, but I get out of the side door ok. I have thought about getting the switch kit mod, but have not done it yet.

Also rooftop tent will weight down your car more. Sleeping inside you’re already safe from elements, and other things. Easy to get up and drive in an emergency situation. I would add fuel to the rooftop instead.

I have anime on both sides. 2 gun rack boxes for storage on rhino racks. Mini vans have so much fun with 2 kids and wife. Weather tech did great on all window instillations

Great video. I put a drawer system in my 4runner and sleep inside. It's a little cramped, but am ok with it. Only drawback is mattress pad. I have a cheapo folding plastic pad and an inflatable backpack mattress that I use. Not very comfortable, but it works.

As a solo hiker/backpacker and love off grid campsites vs the frontline campgrounds, and after extensive research, I got a 2020 LC heritage edition because it has no 3rd row seats. Comfort of RV vs freedom, I think I made right choice. Since I can’t do it myself, I had guys put two platforms. One is for a bed and my solar battery fits under yet I have enough spaces for plastic ens under. Other half, they made a flat bed just to even out the floor and my ICECO refrigerator toward the back. I can sit up during the night if needed and I can use it as 2nd sleeping platform when my husband is with me. I carry an extra sleeping pad from Sea to Summit. Maybe later but I’m not ready to make any drilling or any other permanent work on my LC yet😅

Since I published this video, my wife got a RTT on her truck and while I like it, I still like sleeping in my 4Runner better.

For me there were a few negatives of a RT that sat above giving up the roof space. 1. The weight. Lots tossed up on top gives a weird weight balance. 2. Taking it off when you need to just isn’t that easy. 3. Honestly the price VS practicality just isn’t worth it. Are you really willing to spend a few grand to sleep up on your vehicle compared to just a few hundred to pop up a tent on the ground?

I've got a sleeping platform in my 2000 4Runner and it is way more comfortable than sleeping on the ground, and much dryer than sleeping in a tent in the rain. Rooftop tents also reduce fuel economy pretty drastically, due to the increased drag. The weight that high also raises your center of gravity and can get the vehicle "tippy"...kind of scary on vehicles that are usually already lifted.

I did a rear seat delete, built storage on the passenger, and a vault on the drivers. Plenty of head room to sit up and move around.

Thinking about doing the same in a Grand Cherokee L. I would just keep my injected molded cooler (non-powered) outside under the awning. Would like to do something low profile to maximize headroom. Could keep other supples on a swing out storage box, or one on the roof of the SUV. Thanks for the video with your setup.

I think rooftop tents are a necessity on short wheelbase vehicles like jeeps, and have been somewhat cargo culted onto other vehicles where they make less sense. The truly instant setup of an interior platform - just pull over and you're ready to go - and storm worthiness that outweighs any tent-based setup are really hard to ignore. It does require you to exercise some self-control in terms of what you bring, you can't just stuff the vehicle full to bursting with cargo, which is another reason I think some folks have struggled and ended up bolting on a rooftop tent. But for gas mileage, weight distribution, stealth, convenience, a well-built interior platform is hard to beat.

Nice set up..I do the same. Not gonna give up good roof space on my Gobi for a tent. I generally solo camp so inside works for me for the same reasons you mentioned.

Makes sense to me. I like the screens for the windows. Love the awning too. If I was setting my 4RUNNER for camping I would have the bed on the passenger side with my fridge on the driver's side. I think then a person could recline the drivers seat for sleeping and a spouse could use the bed. I haven't proven that concept but that is my idea.

Valid point. I could go the other way and sleep in the passenger seat and my wife could sleep in the bed...this way, the steering wheel is not in the way.

4Runners are probably my favorite vehicle but the low payload numbers will keep me from buying another one in the future. Probably going with a used Frontier with a bed topper. Great video and I had the slide deck in my old 4Runner and would just throw a mat in the back and grab my sleeping bag when I went camping.

I agree…with all your reasons. The only tent I thought about was one that attaches to the rear of the vehicle with the hatch open, possibly allowing for a quick exit to the 4Runner in the event of an emergency. I wonder if a motion detector could be calibrated….

Other benefits: 1) Doesn't flap during windy nights. 2) In case of lightning strikes, acts as Faraday's cage.

Thank you! I have both the 500 and 1000 Jackery's. I tend to use the 500 in winter and the 1000 in summer. The fridge is a Aspenora (think it's a Chinese knock-off). It actually works really well, but they are not available anymore. I am now trying out the RV45D by SetPower because it has a freezer. I only have 1 trip on it so far.

For protection, sleeping inside the vehicle is the only option. Critters that can get you on the ground can climb ladders. Then there's the whole thing about needing to take a leak in the middle of the night. At least from the vehicle, if you stumble out, it's not that far. :))

Roof top tents are expensive and heavy. I go overlanding in my Mazda CX-5. I just put the backseats down and put sleeping pads. Me and my wife fit pretty good. I got a roof box and hitch bike rack. We're good to go.

Personally have always driven a small car Subaru wrx park and just hike up hours in logging roads or trails to finally find a spot. Have finally reached a stage in life where I can buy an off road vehicle and start looking into that lifestyle. Looking to get a 4runner 2021 trail edition. Do you find that you use the a-trax feature and locking differentials? I live in canada and our logging roads in northern Ontario arent terrible to get up into and I'm not gonna be risking driving through really tough trails anyways. Do you think I can get by with just 4x4 and good tires? Or should I look into the off road trim for the added value. Excellent setup sleeping in your car like that, the awning and platform bed combo looks like you're camping in style and comfort with very little setup. Is that a generator you use to power your fridge and if so, you mentioned leaving the fridge on all night does the generator noise not keep you up? Thanks for an awesome video

Hello Kevin, you will certainly be happy with the trail edition 4Runner. I barely use the A-Trak or my locking differential in the summer, but do rely on both in the winter when I'm going through snow. I power my fridge with a Jacker 500 or 1000. When the vehicle is running, the Jackery is being charged. This system works well for me. Because these are just power stations, they do not make noise at night.

I'm at an hard choice. I really like the rtt but like you said having to set them up and ground tents having to set them up. I like that if I go with the inside I can use the roof for storrage. But on the same hand If I have a rtt I could have the entire inside of the car for storrage, but the inside camping is much cheaper and much less to replace if something does go bad.

There's certainly no perfect solution, I still go back and forth on getting a camper, RTT or just use my ground tent.

Just came across this informative video. Question.... is the natural rake to a 5th Gen - front being lower than the rear - cause the sleeping area to be non-level? I was thinking of a leveling kit for my new '23, but having acid reflux the angle may actually be advantagous to me if I sleep head toward the rear as opposed to, or in addition to, a purpose built sleeping platform made with an integral angle. Keep up the interesting videos!

Yes, the natural rake is lower in the front. I level mine at camp with rocks to get it the way I like it.

I saw some pictures last summer taken by a Ranger of an SUV parked outside in Steamboat. The back windows had been 'grabbed' by a bear and popped right open (shattered). There was some kind of food that the bear really wanted - ignored the dog food. I have a similar set up for inside sleeping but don't have remote start on my ORP- I will look in to remote start. That is why I am always armed when I camp...you never know. I got my remote start from 12 Volt Solutions. Works perfectly and easy to install.

Good Stuff soo many people are doing the car camping thing now and for so long i thought i needed an rv but now .......i am sooooo onboard! Trying to figure sleeping arrangment with husband 6'4" and me 5'10" and our toddler ....we are gonna look like a clown car in our sie na minivan but Im determined to go (non tent) camping this year on a budget! My decades if backpacking snd sleep tenting ate over! Im considering a 4runner to downsize from my Pleasureway RV. Wondering how low you bed platform is and if that’s a pull out? I want only about a 4” drawer to slide.

The only thing that pulls out is the fridge slide. The platform is about 7 or 8 inches high, I'm thinking about redoing it again because I want more headroom.

Thank you for posting this. Looking at the new 2023 4Runner or the TRD Off Road Rav4 and like that you can sleep inside this vehicle. Might be pretty cramped in the Rav4.. HAve you seen the Rav4 TRD? What are your thoughts? Now following 884!

Thanks for sharing. I’m getting ready for my first night in my 4Runner. I just have a sleeping bag. Not planning on a full bed platform for now, just the bare minimum to be able to sleep in the truck. Do you know if there are custom made plate to level the trunk flooring?

Hello. Goose Gear makes a platform for the 4Runner, but it's not cheap. Wouldn't be hard to make a simple small platform just for the lower part of the floor. Enjoy your first night, hope it works well for you.

Toyota is coming out with a hybrid 4Runner. Toyota hybrid vehicles typically allow you to leave the the heat or AC on for hours. Heat shouldn’t be needed if you have a warm sleeping bag, but the AC is very efficient. The AC doesn’t run off of the engine, it uses the electricity from the big battery and then turns on the engine every fifteen minutes or so to recharge the battery. I might wait for a hybrid 4Runner so I can get better gas mileage.

I would imagine that with the new 4Runner being a hybrid, there will be less space inside to sleep. The new Sequoia loses a lot of space because of the batteries. I would certainly like being more efficient, but not at the cost of space.

Hi! At 5:50 in the video.. I see a good visual of your 180 awning set up with your rear hatch open. Is your rear hatch opened up all the way there before/or while touching the support bar of the awning? How is that? It looks fin, I'm wondering if it bothers you at all. I ask because I have a 270 and can't open up my rear hatch all the way when the awning is fully deployed. Thanks!

Hello! The awning support does stop the hatch from opening completely, but not by much. It does not bother me. When mounting the awning, it should be mounted as high up as possible. Because of my Gobi rack, I can mount the awning higher than some other rack options. Hope this helps.

I’m considering a 2024 4-Runner and would also like the simplicity of sleeping inside. What is the benefit of a sleeping platform? Is the 4-runner bed not flat enough for an inflatable mattress pad and sleeping bag?

I don't camp and there are few things less comfortable than sleeping in a passenger vehicle during a humid northeastern U.S. summer, however, on my fall and winter road trips, I just recline my driver's seat and get a very decent night's sleep. Probably not ideal to do for a week, but perfectly fine for a night or two. Benefit (for me) is, I don't have to remove my "stuff" out of the back.

I do not have the factory remote start, I have a plug and play system from 12volt Solutions. With the factory one, the vehicle turns off when you open a door, mine does not.

I too would prefer to sleep in back of the vehicle instead of a tent. Just for the little things, like a cougar not ripping my throat out while I’m sound asleep. Second factor is, compare cleaning and drying a HUGE tent (and compared to even large bed sheets, even a smaller tent is absolutely enormous)…with just getting a car wash.

I removed my entire 2nd row seats to build a sleeping platform. The 4Runner does OK keeping the heat in, but I do use reflective shades on all the windows when it's really cold. Also, the heat from the fridge helps. It will get below freezing, but I have a -20 degree sleeping bag and am comfortable. Hope this helps

Hello Anil, If I had to do something for a family of 4, I would build out a van. You could make cabinets that convert to beds. I've thought about building a van so my wife, dog and myself could sleep inside a vehicle (I don't like RTT's either). I would rather build something than purchase something pre-made, so I could make it the way I wanted.

I used to camp out a lot as a kid. The army changed that for me though. Too many nights on the ground and no tent. Just started throwing the sleeping bag in the back of a truck. So let get this straight with the car doors locked and windows up all the way a bear (black is all we have in the east) could rip the door open?
