I went with the RME 802 because I wanted more I/O. I agree, I think the apollo is good but it is definitely hyped up. I started with Focusrite so I already had a bunch of waves plugins that I love and know how to use so no need for the UAD system. I love my RME interface.

RME has not only high end components & pre-amps, but they have the best kept "drivers" in the industry for their products. Their R&D on their drivers is insane, and is as much of the whole package (and subsequent audio processing) as the hardware itself. 😊

I got the first generation Apollo Twin in 2014 and then in 2020 got the Twin X, six years total of working with the Twin. Almost two months ago, a friend of mine told me about RME. After a bit of research, I ditched my Twin X and got the RME UCX II. I can tell you from experience that the RME UCX II is leaps and bounds better than the Apollo Twin. 1. The clocking is better. 2. The preamps are cleaner and better. I get 72 dB of clean preamp gain opposed to the 65 dB of gain that's colored from the Apollo Twin 3. Better converters which means better conversion. Converters on the Apollo Twin are sub-par. 4. The soundscape is clearer and wider. I hear things in my mixes that I didn't hear with the Apollo Twin. 5. More inputs and outputs. RME UXC II: 20-in/20-out. Apollo Twin X: 10-in/6-out. 6. You can't bypass the preamps on the Apollo Twin X when using an external mic preamp. The signal still passes through the Apollo Twin preamps, which still add a little bit of color to the sound/signal coming from the external preamp. I found this out about six months ago. This means I wasn't getting the full advantage of my Neve Shelford Channel. After switching to the UCX II, problem solved. With plugins from Plugin Alliance and now some from UAD Spark (13 native plugins), the ones I was using anyway before I sold the Twin, I don't need the Twin anymore to run those plugins. Plus I can add a UAD Satellite to run more UAD Plugins if I wanted to. The only thing the Twin X has over the RME UXC II is the ability to track with Unison Preamps, which really doesn't matter if you track with hardware gear. For the price point, I get more bang for my buck with the RME UCX II.

RME isn't the only one. Most Pro Audio manufacturers support its devices long term compared ones that design mostly Prosumer interfaces that updates its products every 3 years. MOTU, Lynx still makes drivers for its early 2000s products. Many of the older MOTU HD192 are still in use found in pro commerical facilities. My studio partner is still using his oringal Lynx Auroa 16 that came out in 2006. I have the MOTU 828ES. Rock solid drivers and great sounding converters. I don't use like a normal audio interface like most. I use it the same way like an Aurora or Apogee Symphony as an AD to DA converter with my outboard gear.

I presume if you use UA plugins does that mean if you're somewhere with your laptop but not your UA interface, those plugins become unavailable unless you previously bounced the audio down with the plugins on? @cardbored_ 11 ай бұрын
The problem I have with the RME is the input/outputs layout, having tons of cables coming out all sides of an interface just wouldn't work for me. It's becoming more and more trendy to hate on UA but I think it's amazing at least for my workflow. I use my interface for a lot of voiceover/video work and my mic audio signal pretty much stays the same for my voiceover mic. Being able to apply a pre-amp and plugins at the driver level and have all those settings persist after reboot is an incredible time/productivity saver for me. If I want to record a quick video with OBS I don't have to do any weird routing since everything is already handled in Console.

Great talk. UAD's Apollo are fantastic but they are expensive and definitely not the "best" interface you can buy. To say that Apollo is the best is a bit like saying that Ableton is the best or that Logic or FL is the best DAW for making music. Everyone has their preferences and Apollo is not objectively better than say RME, Apogee or Audient's and Foucusrite's better alternatives. The same goes for their plugins. However, Apollo comes with a certain hype, and if that gets you motivated and makes you make more music, go for it. It doesn't always have to better technical to be a valid point for you to buy something "technical".

@@MIXBYMALACHI @MIXED BY MALACHI mybad I suffer from gearslutz syndrome 😂 but fr the Babyface has a adat you could & should try a standalone because in my experience alot of corners are cut when their trying to fit a preamp,ad/da etc into a box that can fit in a palm but it is magic what they pull off... but alot of people are unaware you can scoop the top of the line gear from yesteryear for pennies, like my lucid was considered the best converter under 5grand in 09 and now goes for 600 used all-day but definitely not as simple, portable, or power efficient as a all-in-1 but atm for me as been unbeatable but before I write a nerdgasm novel I'ma stop 😂 but wanna say I appreciate the video and congrats on surviving uad alot of people I know personally out here with dust in their pockets messing with uad dropping low mileage used car type money on a interface and few plugins 😂

You should check out the new MOTU AVB stuff or the M2/M4. The converters are unmatched that rivals the completion at an affordable price point. You get excellent long term driver support and very low latency. MOTU stuff is known to last as some of the older MOTUs such as HD192 converters are still in use today in commercial studios. I owned an Audient ID14. It sounded great but the drivers were horrible on Windows and sent it back. I would stay away from Focusrite as well if driver stability and long term driver support matters as I've been through 3 different Focusrite interfaces. I have an Apogee Quartet, sounds just as good as my Motu. Both share the same ESS Sabre DAC chip.

Eman 08 How are their converters better ?
@eman0828
@eman0828 3 жыл бұрын
@@reekrodriqguez6552 Because both Motu and Apogee are using the latest conversion technology. Both companies uses the same ESS Sabre DAC chips in its latest products. RME converters are great but are long in the tooth compared to the rest of the competition that still selling you 10 year old tech. But their drivers are great. I just don't think the high mark up price tag really justify worth buying an RME though since Motu drivers are just as good. I've owned an Apogee Quartet that I directly compared against my MOTU 828ES and I could heat very little difference between the two, that's how sonically close they were that was very subtle. The Apogee was just a tad more brigher with a little more sparkle on the top end but overall both converters sounded great. I can hear more clarity in the mids and a nice punchier, tighter botten end between the two converters. Both have a nice 3D sound and space and very dynamic. The DACs are more quieter than other converters because the volume gain is digitally controlled internally from the ESS Sabre DAC chip, meaning no hiss noise from your studio monitor speakers.

If you are focused mainly on tracking/recording, unison is great, if you are more focused on mixing I think RME preamps sound more natural.

I was considering selling my babyface pro to get an apollo just to start using Luna, now I'm not so sure, I might just buy an apollo to use Luna but keep by babyface. I don't know. I see a lot of people selling their apollo on reverb but not many baby face pros on reverb though, so that's a sign, and i'm seeing baby face win these shoot outs on youtube when facing against UAD.

I’ve grown so accustomed to recording with the LA-2A on the Apollo, idk if I would want to switch lol. Plus it’s almost like using analog compressors.

I had the RME Fireface 800 for years and loved it. However, I was running external hardware for preamps like the UA 610 Solo and the Focusrite ISA One. That was way more expensive than buying the UA Unison preamps and they actually do sound the same if not better. Plus, the legacy plugins are pretty great already, much more similar to the hardware than Waves Plugins. I should note that its all the same chipset so the ADDA conversion is great on both of them.

You will love the RME. Save yourself(and $$$) as the apollo is a never ending expensive plugin dongle. If you think you will forever live in the box and plugged into a wall this is fine as the apollo is a really good interface but the rme is cleaner and will give you more room for expansion without being stuck on an apple-esque walled garden.

I got this instead of the Apollo because I have a m1 Mac in the Apollo wasn't supporting it yet. I have never heard such clear vocals in my own studio. This also very reliable I've never had it disconnect or not connect. The impedance on the headphones is high enough to bypass a headphone amp pushing my Sennheiser HD 650s. I had never paid attention to rme but I'm impressed.

Bet that Neve 88m would make for an amazing ADAT expansion for Babyface Pro sometime in the future …perfect setup with 2 crystal clear pre-amps and 2 of smooth colored pres. Just wish it had at least a couple line ins too, to take advantage of more of the 8 48khz channels ADAt supports

Wow thanks for the suggestion! I've been wondering what to do with my ADAT in on a UFX since I am primarily interested in adding analog and one usually does not find a warm analog pushing out bits over optical. :D I guess this could be done with any interface used as a slave. Maybe the optimal solution in this case is to find the most basic interface with the best analog circults. Perhaps the 88M is that.
