The Porsche 911 is arguably the world's best known and most beloved sports car. I was lucky enough to own the a 991 generation Porsche 911. A Carrera S - the last of the naturally aspirated Carreras. 400HP, PDK and endless grip. Plus - to my eye - a gorgeous realisation of the 911's iconic shape. So why did I sell it?

This video speaks to me, Andy. I have been thinking about getting another 911 and debating if I get a newer one. I don’t think I will for all the reasons that you say: the older cars are just more engaging. Top work, my friend! This is a really good video and I was engaged from beginning to end. All the best!

Thanks for the comment good sir. You hit the nail on the head. This car is just brilliant but there's something magic with the older ones. I didn't mention it in the video (forgot) but one of the challenges with these super capable, powerful cars is being able to really exploit them on public roads. Here in Australia, our highway patrols are very trigger happy when it comes to booking people for speeding. 996 i think is a fantastic mid point in terms of some modern(ish) tech and involving, analogue drive.

I have a 2016 991.1C2 with PDK. It was the last year for the naturally aspirated engines, which I particularly like. Great car. I'm not tracking it, nor am I racing it on the streets. Overall, it's just a fun car. It was bought as the last car I expect to buy, a toy, because I don't really need it; it's just fun, especially in the mountains and canyons around Los Angeles, Malibu, etc. I have no plans to sell it, ever. Otherwise, we use my wife's BMW.
@lastrasp
@lastrasp 2 жыл бұрын
Murray it sounds like you bought the perfect car for your purpose. And I guess that's the point isn't it? The car needs to match your needs and the type of driving you want to do with it. Interestingly, part of the reason I was so keen to get a 991 in the first place was that the first time I drove a 991 was in the Angeles Forest up ACH and Upper Big T. Similar spec to yours - on those roads I think a 991 is a spectacular proposition! Keep enjoying yours and thanks for commenting 👍🏼

100% agree. I had a manual 991.2 Carrera T for 2 years, loved it alot but found I was tending to grab the keys to my 964 for weekend blasts. The Carrera T was an amazing car and I had the opportunity to take it on track a few times, but as a daily it was too much. You cant exploit its potential on public roads like you can do pushing an older car. Driving my 964 at the speed limit on a back road is very enjoyable and engaging, the Carrera T was just too good for the back roads and needed the track to fully enjoy its potential. It was amazing, but less track time ment it was sold. I do miss it, but not as much as I would miss the 964. Great vid.
@lastrasp

Totally agree Matt. If you have a track or roads where you can really exploit the modern cars, they come alive and dance. Then you really see just how incredibly good they are. On most roads, driving the old cars, you really feel like you're pushing.

I agree with you on the PDK. I was searching for 981 S manual but settled for a mint example GTS with PDK. It is stunning. Maybe a Cayman might give you the connection and you still get that naturally aspirated flat 6, but a smaller more agile and mid engined car for a totally fun experience.

@@lastrasp Agree.I have a 2014 GTS, and love the car to bits.. This is my second year of ownership with zero problems. First year was a nightmare!! intermittent stalling, which seemed to occur as least a couple of times a week, and with no fault lights showing up on the dash!! Always re-started straight after, and without any repeat for at least a couple of days, then same thing, again, without any warning. Next step was a diagnostic check at main dealer, at a cost of £185!! with typically no faults showing up , along with no stalling on their test drive.!!. How foolish it makes you look!! lol.... Anyway, after a couple of months frustration, I eventually got it sorted at my local indy garage.. "Faulty O2 sensor!! Changed and Bobs your Uncle.... A word of warning though. Don't be tempted into buying one of those cheaper scan tools, then assume you can find out what the fault is yourself. Again big mistake on my part. Hi Andy , just subscribed. Ex Melbourne, then Bairnsdale resident - now retired in Thailand. I have a 2015 911 991.1 C4S - what a great car!! Magnificent to drive, & yes it just feels ‘classy’ and solid when sitting in it. However I think this is more of a fun or lifestyle vehicle and I would struggle to use it as a daily driver. It is an exceptional car, and more practical than my previous 986 Cayman, but still not a daily. I understand your decision - especially because you have your 964 to play in!

I also sold my 991 PDK. I felt like I was driving a 'simulator' because the car essentially did everything for me. I bought a 1975 air cooled Porsche and connected with it immediately. The modern 911 is a wonder to behold that no doubt rewards those lucky enough to own or experience its brilliance. But can you really push the limits to max out the capabilities it has on a day to day basis or are you more likely driving at 6/10ths at best most of the time. I love my 996-1, it is my 4th Porsche and I feel like I have found my sweet spot. From a 3.2 Carrera, to a 944 S2, a 928 S4 (still owned after 16yrs) to the bastard child of the 911 family........... I BLOODY LOVE IT !! Whatever brings you the most joy, find it and hold on to it. Vintage all the way for me.

It’s a great point Grant. I found that to really experience the 991, I would sometimes push harder than I’m comfortable doing on a public road. I totally feel the same......Like you, I really like the 991 for all the things you stated, but its larger size makes it less desirable for smaller canyon roads. The 991 is the first 911 that really transitioned into the type of GT car it has becoming as of late. .Here in Southern California, it is the same. The smaller sized Porsche's like the 964, 993, 987 or 981 are more fun the the type of roads that are most fun......

So true. Although I must confess, the first 991 I ever drove was a base Carrera which I took up Angeles Crest and Upper Big T. If we had more roads like that here I'd be keeping mine for sure. Hi Andy. Can relate. Had a 997.2 as daily and ended up selling and getting 996 for getaways and Sunday drives. 997 under warranty so no tinkering. 996 I can play with and have fun doing some DIY stuff. A hobby car gives me more emotive connection than daily. Also at 1/3 price can be less precious with 996. What to get for your daily?

Yep the fear of voiding the warranty is a limiting factor for sure. I love how James from Auto Amateur seems to not worry about that and has been able to make his 991 an awesome expression of his perfect 911. I think about the things I could have done with stance, wheel colour, light lens tints, exhaust etc and know I could have made that car far more unique. Maybe I’ll get another some day and do all those things. My daily is a Jeep SRT. 6.4 ltr HEMI.

Perfectly understandable. It’s a great do-everything sports car. But problem with Jack of all trades is that they are masters of none. A little bit bigger and with the PDK it take the road feeling away when driving your 964. But it does come alive and driving here in Los Angeles PDK is the best on the almost everyday traffic. Late to comment, but I think you’ve hit quite an important point. In trying to have a 911 (991) as your daily driver, it never attains the sense of occasion of the 964. We have a Macan for everyday driving, and it handles that perfectly. My 964 is more of an event when we take it out, which keeps it special. Also found your comment regarding the increased size of the 991 spot on. The 964 fits even American roads better than the 991, which makes driving more enjoyable. I would like to see Porsche go back to the original (1963-1998) proportions for the 911, but the odds of that are probably zero.

Bob, I agree on all points. I have to say I certainly didn't buy the car with the idea of making money on it. As a car enthusiast I have no interest in buying cars to make money - I fully anticipate losing money on every car I buy! So you're right, that's definitely not the point. The point is to buy these cars and enjoy them. When I bought my 964 I was convinced I'd bought at the top of the market but didn't care as I just wanted the car. I don't care how many miles I put on it - I drive it all the time because it makes me happy. And mate, if your 991 is making you happy that's brilliant! They're great cars so enjoy it!

@@lastrasp I just find the soul, presence, character and the work required for the reward in the air cooled cars so alluring. The modern 911’s, while incredibly good, just don’t move me like the older cars.

Trying to figure out if I'm watching Last Rasp or the Bachelorette. Just replace "car/991" with "man/guy/he" "He's incredibly fun" "He's an amazing man." "For whatever reason, I just feel more connected to that guy than I do to this guy." "The market's hot." "The other reason is, the kind of guys that I do here around Melbourne are..." "I feel like the size and weight of the guy is something I notice." "And that brings me to the final reason that I didn't choose this guy.... I just haven't felt a magic connection with this guy. It's not the guys fault...he's an exceptional guy, but for whatever reason this guy and me...we just haven't connected." "Do I think he's an incredible guy? Yeah absolutely!" Great job dude, I would say sorry to see her go...but it looks like a the right time.

Lately? Definitely! Thankfully my GT4 answers the modern Porsche brief really nicely. However, I think if I’d held onto the 991 for longer it would have gotten u der my skin more and I’d never have sold it in the first place.

Well whatever floats your boat right? Like I mentioned I'm a big fan of PDK. And the times I had spirited drives in the car, I really enjoyed it. Rather than looking at it as a less fun experience than rowing through the gears of a manual, I just embraced it as a different experience. Lightning fast shifts, mated to that engine were just brilliant.

@@lastrasp We have 2013 PDK 981 Boxster, and 996.1GT3, manual of course. Love both!! As an every day car, PDK is brilliant, but manual in GT3 is very engaging!! In a heartbeat I would have a current GT3 or 992 in PDK

I have to admit, it makes me a little sad. That 991 S is a beautiful car. I have a 981 S, so I know what the car feels like on the inside. I can't imagine giving up my 981 S. That said, I understand that given the opportunity to drive a nicely sorted 964 I would also probably choose that. So it's probably better to let someone else enjoy it instead of leaving it to sit in your garage.

You what Greg, when I bought the 991 I had originally wanted a 981 S just like you. I wonder if I had bought that car, it might have just been a bit more suitable to the kinds of roads we drive and a bit more 'me'. I've driven a 981S and loved it. If I had bought one I may well have held onto it.

@@lastrasp It's hard to say, maybe you're right; I really like the balance of my 981 S. Or... maybe if your 991 S was a manual? I've driven PDKs and while they are brilliant, I find a manual is so much more fun to drive. Either way, great video. I love your stuff. Keep up the great work!

You sold the car bc you can’t extract 100% of its performance. A 964 is a much simpler car to reach the limits. I’ve had several of both, and the 991 is an incredible machine that can be driven to the limit with reliability…the 964 is a flabby ancient oil pumper that can barely keep up with a Golf.
