From 21-28 years old, I lived full-time in a residential yogic community. Each morning began with 5:30am meditation...and the responsibilities and expectations continued from there. In today's video, I share my experience living in an ashram, what it gave me, its challenges, why I chose such an austere life, and why I ultimately left.

Thank u Kae for sharing this. I was in a Catholic ashram on an island off the west coast of Ireland. I like that you say we stay in such communities because they give us what we (think) we need at the time. I see it as a time of spiritual abdication of my own personal experience with God. I thought I needed a LEADER to tell me what to do. I thought that the GURU knew better than me how to commune with God! What a coward I was to hand over my own spiritual authority to someone who loved power over others. Listening to you brought me back to those days and has reminded me of how much I have grown spiritually since I left. I needed to be with them to know that I didn't need them.

This was a fantastic video. I have often wondered what living at an Ashram would be like. I did not know that you did live in an Ashram or I would have asked you to make a video myself!!! Thank you. Namasé!!

I have been investigating ashrams because my therapist has recommended them to me. This video has helped me understand what ashram living is or can be like. Thank you for all the information I need in discerning whether to go or not.

Kae, I enjoyed your story so much, and the way you told it. It reminded me of a Star Trek Voyager episode, where the captain went through horrible disciplines and Trials of spirit and body to become enlightened so that she could save the life of one of her crew. At the end of the prophets told her, she created the trials and disciplines because that's what she thought she needed. She's saved the life of her crew at a tremendous cost that was unnecessary to pay. _______ I went through something similar as you, through Baptist, Methodist, Charismatic, Pentecostal ... though much of it was unnecessary, I don't regret what I experienced because it made me who I am today.

aha ! after a seven yr relationship ended, i had this concept of living , seeking what my soul came here for. found an ashram in Brooklyn, they were gurus with dayjobs as nurses, perfect. we can seek enlightenment while doing our normal jobs, i was an actor and a lifestyle manager. i did enjoy being vegan, pursued the sentient life, observed how they lived, they were indians from calcutta. i must say, the enlightenment i seek did not happen there, i was just eating healthy, one of the guru's calling was to cook the most amazing vegan food, i still miss that. they really did not share their methods of yoga and meditation, i was just a paying tenant living with monks.

This may be obvious to state, but here goes. You are so inclusive, and gracious, and generous. Not that I know you well, but yeah out of this experience, you got some really good lessons. The price sounds horrendous, but you surpassed the limits that were put upon you. The punishments and manipulation, and torture, led you to excel and continue on true enlightenment. I don't know if that all came out(no pun) as clearly as I intended, but suffice to say you are a wonderful spirit. As always, thanks and Namaste.

A lot of guru's has offered profound wisdom and help for our well being but it is also scary if you might get exploited or following a false teaching. It's nice to know where your coming from. I hope your in a better space now.
