Why I Started a YouTube Channel For 2024

When I first started shooting videos a little more than a decade ago, I created an online travel documentary series called Humanity. Though I stopped making that series a few years later, it had been pretty successful on Vimeo. It taught me how to make films and gave me a consistent place to publish content - and I have always missed that consistency. As a result, I have toyed with making a KZfaq channel for YEARS but have always put it off. But, this year, I have finally made the plunge and dedicated myself to making and growing a channel.
In this video, I explore the reasons why I started a KZfaq channel in 2023.
Thanks to ‪@markbone‬ and ‪@LucForsyth‬ for the inspiration!

You’re making an exciting and enviable choice! I exec produced a doc that was on Netflix a while back (Spinning Plates), and I’m currently producing a new doc in the classical music world. We’re shooting while fundraising, and it’s a grind - all while hoping for a possible festival run and the attention of a few gatekeepers. Totally exhausting. I’m seriously rooting for you, and your plan to build your own audience! 👍

Yep. I don't think it will be any easier or take less time to build a community here as making a film, but a community is the lifeblood of an artist/filmmaker, so have to at least try.

this is quite inspiring, I have worked / trained within the filmmaking space since 2008 and while i wanted to start a youtube channel I feel sometimes I cant really add anything or some what see myself not good enough as I have mostly assisted or worked as an AC and never got a real footing in the door. Now its been sort of forced on to me to go freelance full time and I see it as a way to help make an audience and to have consistent content though I still have doubts though this has really ressonated and I am pretty sure i'll give it as a go and start.

So much of it is to just keep creating and be consistent with trying to improve. Good luck!

Just found your channel and this video specifically. My situation is somewhat similar to yours and I can't tell you how much I appreciate you sharing your take on this topic. I've also worked in the industry for about ten years, most of it in the corporate side of things and a little bit of television (mostly as an employee). While I'll never complain about my day job, I consider myself lucky to do what I love everyday, but my true passion is wildlife and I'm working on my first nature doc currently (I'm almost 40, better late than never right? Lol). I've never entered a film festival but do plan to try and I'm learning about "the game" and I agree it seems like quite a grind. Similar to you, I'm considering starting a KZfaq channel for many of the same reasons you've discussed, but if I'm completely honest, the thought of putting myself out there in that way is kinda terrifying, I really prefer being behind the camera Lol. That said, I feel it is something I should consider to grow as a professional and a person. I just need to figure out what it is that I want to share (beyond just my finished doc). Any way, long story long, I really appreciate you sharing what you have thus far (especially this video) and I'm looking forward to what you create next... Agreed, @markbone and @LucForsyth, among others, are awesome! Cheers!

Thanks for the note Justin and agree with all your points. I still do plenty of commercial work and work-for-hire (and often love it), but it's also incredibly fulfilling to work on the films and art you want to work on. I would say it's definitely worth playing "the game" a few times (or every time) if your goal is to build awareness of your film and work and get your name out there. And yes, putting yourself out there on KZfaq is equally difficult and, yes, terrifying. I finally feel somewhat confident that I have something to say (at least a bit), so that makes it a bit easier, but it's still a learning curve. Thanks for watching!

This is a refreshing take on an important topic. I especially appreciate how genuine it is because KZfaq is becoming very clickbaity. Great work and looking forward to see all future content :) Best of luck!

Not a film maker but as someone who can spot a good storyteller and teacher I can tell I like your style! Allow me one tip, maybe slow down a little (by 9% 😜) to broaden your reach to non-native speakers. You got faster towards the end of the video.
