I am getting the Tilta shoulder rig today. I use a comfortable foam standard camera strap. I poke one arm through so it's not on the back of my neck. All my cameras have a strap with easy to remove clips. I use rigged up C70's as well. Not a big fan of the EasyRig types. I have one but if you need to move/walk it's rough. Waiting on my C400 to come in September to use with my 24-105 2.8. Nice weight combo. Good work here.

For all day shoots, I use my FX3/FX6 with a gimbal which is mounted directly to a mechanical support vest, namely the Thanos SE. I can shoot nonstop for hours with that system without much fatigue, if I really need to. You can shoot from eye level to knee level, it’s a pretty good range for most situations. With just a gimbal, it’s nearly impossible to shoot continuously for more than 10/15 minutes without destroying your arms and back. You have to put down your camera every few minutes to recover.

Totally. I wanted to focus specifically on handheld, doc verité techniques, but if you're going to be running a gimbal, you almost have to have something like a vest and arm. Thanks for watching!

@5:03 yes, you do have to grab the cam off the saddle, but you could rest your elbows on the saddle for stability. no, i don't own a cine saddle...i'm a poor filmmaker so i just used an old lowepro sling bag that i had layin' around and filled it w/ a towel. worked out pretty well at my last shoot. and yes, i used the method i mentioned when i had to get the camera higher.

I'm so glad you have taken the time to make all these videos my man! I'm in AOD and watch King Coal last night. Loved the Mallick inspiration in the impressionistic scenes. I'm looking forward to a video about the process of filming these scenes. Hybrid docs are my jam. I don't really like filming verite anymore. Being more creative and intentional is just so much more fun. Thanks again Curren!

Thanks so much for the note - and agreed, I loved the intentionality of King Coal and the few narrative films I’ve shot. And I’m going to do a series of videos directly and loosely related to King Coal, so let me know what you’d be interested in hearing more about. Thanks again for watching!

@CurrenSheldon amazing man! Thank you. I'd love to her about you and your wife's approach to the scenes with the girls, I wasn't sure if they were actors or not. But it didn't distract from the story. And what was your idea behind certain scenes. Cause I loved the non-linear editing in them to convey a feeling. Questions like did you just scout for nice locations and prompt the girls to do certain things. I've done that in two of my docs. After a while I find myself trying to make a narrative from someone's real story with them playing themselves, similar to The Rider. Thanks for reading. Have an awesome day.

Thanks for watching and glad you liked it. Good question about the clothing - I have been to this area of a Peru a couple of times and many of the weavers from Chincheros are always dressed like this. Definitely when in Cusco or when potential customers are around, they wear the traditional outfits.

Don't write "all stabilization methods". You are missing electronic gimbal, steadicam and more, that would have been much better in pretty much all of these scenarios...
@CurrenSheldon

These are doc or handheld stabilization methods. Gimbals and steadicams are their own thing and for a certain look - not what most handheld shooting scenarios want.

As of today, June 3rd, 2024, out of multiple videos I've ever seen, yours is the BEST & MOST COMPREHENSIVE regarding camera stabilizer reviewing. It's because you cover Easyrig, Handheld, Monopod, Sakk bag, Shoulder Rig and Vest. You also demonstrate their advantages and disadvantages. Thank Curren for such an INTERESTING & USEFUL job! One question, please! If possibile, could you please compare Easyrig STABIL G3 with your monopod system? Easyrig claims it can stabilize camera setups between 5-25 kg / 11-55 lbs. Thanks again.

Thanks so much for the kind words and for watching! I'd love to test out the STABIL G3, but don't have access to one at the moment (and they are pricey!). I am going to do an easyrig vs readyrig comparison soon, though - and maybe throw in the monopod/vest system as a control group.

The question I have about the software is this, what is more cost-effective. Upscale your video fron 1080 60p to 4k 60p or record in 4k 30p and interpolate to 60p. Can you compare this?
@Andresvideo
@Andresvideo Ай бұрын
Why would you record 4k 30p and interpolate to 60? that takes a lot of time for the software to do, couldn't you just record 4k 60? that's better time-effective!

Curren, have you made a video about that vest and monopod setup of yours? I was thinking of getting the Thanos SE with the DJI RS4, but was keen on getting a usage review of your setup of vest and monopod.
@CurrenSheldon
@CurrenSheldon Ай бұрын
I have not made a video about that yet. I may make an updated stabilization video as I also just got a ReadyRig for a 45-lb camera package doing verite (not easy) and it seems to be working much better than an Easyrig. But the vest/monopod setup would be good to go into more detail and see if I can find some similar alternatives.

For most new lenses, and especially those made for Leica M Mount, it is pretty reasonable (on sale for $600-700 most of the time). But yes, expensive compared to vintage lenses - BUT, it is the only lens that does what it does, so if you want that look, it's your only true option.

@CurrenSheldon
@CurrenSheldon Ай бұрын
It's a pretty new lens (released in 2018/19, I believe), so I don't think there are any thoughts on lens variation in the way older, vintage lenses have. I have seen it on sale for around $600-700 fairly often, so I would wait until you see that. Currently on sale, I believe. I have also seen some like-new used versions on MPB for $400-500 - I don't think it has been hugely popular, so you can find some good prices if you just check every now and again.

Overrated: V-mount batteries. I feel like *this* is the controversial opinion! It’s so much money to buy a whole system of rods, mounting plates, cables etc, before you even buy the batteries! And it’s a huge amount of extra weight. I shoot on C70s and an R5, and I’ve never been able to justify spending all that on a battery system. NPF batteries are cheap, and some camera batteries now have USB and D-tap outputs. Thoughts?
@CurrenSheldon
@CurrenSheldon Ай бұрын
Oh good one! I agree. I love V-Mounts for my cinema cameras, but I agree that they are definitely overrated for mirrorless or small cine cam (C70, FX6, etc) rigs.
@DANAMIONLINE
@DANAMIONLINE Ай бұрын
I see what you mean. Thanks for starting this conversation, Curren. I would add that: - Camera cage is underrated depending on the camera you’re using. For example, for verite doc work, a Blackmagic Pocket Camera needs a cage to be able to mount additional things like external shotgun mic, wireless lav receiver, or timecode. - Flowtech Tripod is overrated while any “good” tripod is underrated. - Follow focus is overrated. It’s not essential to pulling focus.
@CurrenSheldon
@CurrenSheldon Ай бұрын
All great points. Camera cage is definitely camera dependent - if you're using a cinema camera (c70, FX6), then you can definitely get by without them. A mirrorless camera that isn't the FX3, then they are pretty darn useful - especially half cages. Flowtech - Overrated? hmmmm. Maybe. But it's still great - haha. And yes, I think the general follow focus is very overrated. I'd much rather have my hand on the lens itself. But wireless follow focuses are necessary when you need them and can't actually physically touch the lens. Thanks for watching!
@DANAMIONLINE
@DANAMIONLINE Ай бұрын
@@CurrenSheldon You’re welcome. Back in the day, when I used a Canon C200 and C100, we never bought cages. Regarding the tripod, I used your justification for ranking, essential. The Flowtech isn’t essential. Hahaha. Is it super convent, YASS.
@CurrenSheldon
@CurrenSheldon Ай бұрын
@@DANAMIONLINE Haha FAIR on the Flowtech. That particular tripod is not essential, but a great tripod is. And yes, for my cinema cameras, I usually just change out the stock top handle to get a few more mounting points, though I don't think I ever did that for the C100/C200.
@degree5305
@degree5305 Ай бұрын
I wouldn't say they are underrated but aren't cages kinda key to a lot of rigs? Their strength is their flexibilty, like you said you like the top handle but don't like how they can make it hard to grip. BUT they do offer handle grip possibilities if you have a camera without a good form factor like some mirrorless cameras. Cages gives you options to mount external recording, monitor etc. Once I was crammed in a shoot and the cage allowed me to mount the shotgun mic to the side. I changed my mind I am moving cages to underrated tier lol.
@CurrenSheldon
@CurrenSheldon Ай бұрын
Agreed that for some cameras/rigs, they are more important. BUT they are not a necessity for every single shoot, which is what you hear, so therefore they fell into the overrated category - but they are still very useful. If more mirrorless cameras had mounting points like the FX3, then I think camera cages become even more overrated.
