Ex-Google TechLead and global digital nomad explains why he stopped traveling, after years of backpacking and living a mobile life out of a suitcase.
What's the difference between "here" and "there"? And what would you give to be "there"? To me... they are one and the same. There are travelers in every city in the world, even in your own city -- the one you think is boring, likely. There are places that are special to you, that bring you inspiration, and yet it's funny that these places may be boring to others. I think travel is not so much about ticking off a bunch of checkboxes or even researching "top 10 places to go before you die," but rather it's about picking a place that has special meaning to you that inspires you, personally. If you have to research & think about where you want to go, it's probably not the right choice. Unless, you travel for the sake of travel... Then one must ask, do you seek a place or a home?

I love to travel, but I wouldn't want to travel all the time. One thing I've noticed, while one can meet some cool people travelling, the relationships are usually superficial and fleeting.

It depends. If you stay in places for longer periods or return frequently, you can establish and build relationships with friends. If you mean romantic relationships, yes, most are going to be fleeting unless you both happen to have the same goals and want to be in the same places. Otherwise, you'll be trying to live a long distance thing, and most of those won't work.

So true. My facebook is full of hundreds of people I met somewhere "on the road" with whom I currently have absolutely NOTHING in common except a fleeting shared experience together in some no name town. For example a young lady who was our guide during a tour in Yogyakarta Bali. On my facebook for the past 7 or so years and we have never interacted one bit since I left that town.

Traveling is very expensive and specially as you get older in my opinion. The older you get, the more comfort you seek, and in my experience, the less bs you’re willing to take. You also value comfort more since you realize your rest is more important than saving 20 or 30 euros. Or dollars

A man needs a purpose he can work towards daily.

I work in IT service mgmt. Had work that put me in the top 5% income group in my country at the age of 27. But I quit, worry free, guilt free and went to travel for 10 months. Came back, landed a contractor job in the same sector for a bit less money, then after a few months found a job that is possibly even better than the one I used to have before travel. I have lived more in those 10 months than I did in years, i have grown and changed more than I could in the same time if I stayed at home. For me the risk was calculated, the costs were estimated and the job market was known and even though I had no guarantees I KNEW I would figure it out. You get one life, that may not last till you are 40, 50, 60. It may end in a week, a year, or five. So I think that everyone needs to figure out a good mix, be smart about your money, take calculated risks and deal with the consequences.

About 10 years ago, while trekking in Peru, I found myself at a table in a small restaurant with a bunch of random fellow backpackers I had just met. It was Christmas Eve and I was sitting next to a couple from Germany. Everyone was in a cheerful mood and we all ordered drinks, except for that couple. I asked them why they weren’t having any and they answered somewhat reluctantly that after ordering food they had just enough money left to buy bus tickets tomorrow to their next destination. We ended up buying them drinks (they’re dirt cheap in Peru) and they were very thankful, but it got me thinking about their travel experience and it was at that time that I realized that I never want to be one of those guys on a shoestring budget, travelling from one place to the next without knowing whether I’ll have enough money to eat tomorrow. I have still travelled more than an average person, but I focused on my career as well. And now that I look back, I realize that I’ve made the right choice. Today, I’m financially independent, travel even more than I used to, and can afford to do it in style. The point is, everyone’s different. Don’t get obsessed with something without being sure you really want this.

Food is actually one of the biggest reasons why I don't like traveling for a long period of time. As you said, often you just don't have the money to go to a good restaurant every day for 2 months, so you eat some cheap crap. At home I can just buy some fresh produce and cook some very tasty meals and if I want something special on the weekend or something, I saved enough money to afford it. The other thing is, that I always feel bad after eating outside, after a while, even if it's not cheap food. Often it's just not that healthy I think. I really preffer to cook at home. Sometimes you find a good AirBnB with a good kitchen, but that's not always possible.
@TechLead
@TechLead 5 жыл бұрын
Absolutely agree, it gets tiring trying to find something healthy. Almost all restaurant food is extremely low-quality ingredients, optimized for maximum salt. Many days, I don't feel like I want to "go out on the town" and eat at a restaurant, but I still have to eat something somewhere... that's why it might make sense to eat unhealthy "travel" food for 2 weeks or so, then go home and eat healthy again.

Your bit about Iceland was funny. Iceland is amazing because of the natural beauty of their country, and yes, the Icelandic people's spirit. Of course they want similar things around the world, we are all people after all. When I was there, I asked a guy what he does in his free time, I expected him to talk about going out and enjoying the natural beauty of his country, hiking, climbing, etc. He basically told us he just goes bowling... In the end, it is often easier to see the beauty if you are an outsider. Otherwise, it takes patience and self awareness to keep an open mind to the everyday beauty around us.

@@Orsay11 I'd go to every reasonably safe place possible. Especially places that are more unknown and thus unspoiled. For example, I went to Santorini almost 30 years ago. The town where most people would flock to watch the sun drop out of the sky, Oia, was mostly just old ladies wearing black and goats. I went back in 2017, and the place was developed with many high end stores. Ruined the beauty and simplicity of the place. The capital (Thera) was even more crowded and developed - with fast food places! So if you go to Greece, choose a place OTHER than Mykonos, Santorini, and the like. There are a few hundred inhabited islands, and they are generally awesome - while also being substantially cheaper with less (or no) gaudiness.

I'm a very active person and I LOVE adventure. I do martial arts and I keep fit, I love any outdoor activities (hiking, kayaking, snowboarding, river rafting, rock climbing, the list goes on and on)and traveling is one of my favorite things to do. However, I feel like a lot people don't talk about somethings that are mentioned in this video. So many travelers on the internet give this wanderlust, grandiose idea of traveling. And a lot of it is valid, there's many beautiful things to see out there. At the same time, and for example, I feel like not many cities are that unique or different nowadays. You can go to any major city and find a McDonald's, every city has a Mexican or Irish bar with corny tourist and crappy top 40 music blasting, a lot of the travelers even look a like sometimes. Some of the cities don't feel totally unique to me. Thanks to globalism. And traveling can just be quite exhausting sometimes. Especially if you're constantly on the go every few days or weeks. It's EXHAUSTING. It makes someone like me, who's very active, want to be INACTIVE for a few weeks to a month at times. Just enjoy being home, doing something more local. However, traveling is fun and I think it's one of those things that you have to do in life to see what you want in life. It'll either make you want to travel that much more or make you want to be more content with what you have.

@AlexNOSAM You mean better things to do like busting your ass working and dealing with the stress of raising kids and keeping the wife happy? If you aren't getting satisfied at home, your wife stops giving you attention and fulfilling your basic needs, you probably will start getting "ideas."

These are basically the reasons I don’t travel... also because I prefer buying a product than an “experience”, but I do wonder every now and then... which is why I landed here to reaffirm my lifestyle! Thanks TechLead!

As a young man i never had any desire to travel at all. I love my country and small rural tow and the people . I traveled twice when i was 13 but after that all i felt was out of place and bored with the environment after that i just stayed in my hometown and i have never left since . I agree with you , its in your genes i truly believe if youre a traveler or explorer you will know as you travel if you arent you will feel empty when you leave

There is a reason why our ancestors settled in a particular region. People used to venture far out to find a better place, for survival.

I agree with you. I stopped traveling too because it just got too expensive. And for what? Too see the touristy parts that everyone else has seen. Flights are so freaking expensive and then hotel and food and transportation. And then your rushed for your time. It wasn't relaxing for me, it was stressful and exhausting. I was working towards this "vacation" to be relaxed and away from work. But the opposite was happening. I just don't like the system of busting ass at a job you hate to go on a trip once a year to get away from the thing you hate. Spend a lot of money and not a lot of time to be happy for a little bit and then get back to work and be miserable again. What a bad system. You shouldn't dred going back to where you're from or where you work at. If you have to get away from the thing you don' like doing or where you live you need to change that instead of masking it with these so called "vacations".

The best hack is to live in places for 1 to 4 years, learn the culture, learn the language, date the women, eat the food, and then take your leave. That is what I call traveling :)

Yes non-stop traveling is actually quiet stressful like you said.. you have to constantly spend time searching for the right hotel, airbnb, right price, right location, size, amenties.. then you also have transportation and language concerns.. not to mention, you are eating alone most of the time at the restaurants. I settle down in one place in Mexico now where I call 2nd home.. but the idea of traveling around the world is no longer as appealing as it used to be

I travelled but not kinda tourist, i choose a place ,a neighborhood and stay there chilling out, working, or voluntering its depends which country. Thats the interesting part for me, living the place and rooting little bit there, not just going around. Also, what i dont like to do, and i see all my friends doing it, is for example a weekend in paris, 3 days in roma... all these short trips to the famous capitals, i dont know, not interesting and expensive, they are all kinda same. I am from Barcelona. Someone travelling to Barcelona??

I have a home. With a lot of stuff and I enjoy it all. I enjoy my shed my back deck. My toes, my car's my toys except my home. Repairing and fixing it etc. Etc. II don't want to be anywhere else in the world but next to my home, let them take me out in a box, please, I love it. Love it, love it here. I've worked on this house for 30 years. And it's exactly how I want it. Why am I gonna go somewhere else on the planet to enjoy what I have here?

The thing that I used to love about traveling was the physical movement of my body during the exploration phase at any place( this might be the most important part of traveling for a person in a sedentary job .....the dream of movement). If I want more information about a place, I can get better information by reading. Once I realized that, I spend more time cycling, hiking and camping around my city rather than spend money on "experiences", which turn out to be not so cheap. The thing about PlayStation+HDTV+stacation resonated with me big time, what with fantastic HD travel videos that I can enjoy during my stacations.
