I've spent a lot of time studying. Maybe more than I should have. Sometimes we do it because it's the easy thing to do. Sometimes we do it because it's what everyone else is doing. But take a good look at yourself and ask what is necessary, and what is worth it?
🙏 Thanks for watching!

True because your grades doesnt matter. The knowledge you bring into the real world matters. True, grades don't matter but I do not want to fail and repeat the subject. Tuition fee is very expensive and it would be costly to repeat. This video is what I've always instinctively felt deep down but was scared to adopt the mindset, because like most people I was pressured into "grind/hustle" perfectionist culture as well. I would feel inferior because I wasn't the 4.0 GPA, aced every exam, can study for 12 hours student, especially being in the competitive pre-med path. I really appreciate you putting this content out Matty. What I'm happy about myself and is proud to say is that I've always done things that made me happy and pursued people and endeavors that my heart desired. From now on I'm definitely going to remind myself that perfectionism isn't the thing to strive for, but a happy balance life while going after your dreams is. Cheers brother

I only study a couple hours a day and I still get mostly A's, a few B's. I just remember what I can from class and I'll focus my attention on anything I didn't understand. My focus with studying is less memorising and more understanding, then I'm less likely to forget everything after the test. I don't just want to pass, I want to understand the topic, and I've generally found that it's easier to learn by interacting with the topic by thinking about it, rather than just remembering phrases from a textbook.

When he said that he spent most of his childhood studying , that really hit home 😭I used to study soooo much in middle school so I could always get the best grades in my class and get better marks than that one boy (who I was obviously overestimating lol ), so I was always studying to get an A* and I wasn’t playing outside like other kids , when I could’ve just got an A- and saved tons of hours to go and play and live my childhood instead of studying for those extra few points that didn’t change anything ( I mean wtfrick was I doing studying all those hours in middle school ! It would make sense to do so in highschool since u need those marks to get into uni but middle school marks gave me nothing except for a missed childhood ). Now I’m in highschool and I’ve realised my mistake in middle school . So I’m trying to not spend hours just to get a few more points but to study to just get “good enough” like he said . I really regret not living my childhood and I’m not going to waste my teens doing nothing but studying just to get an A* instead of a an A-. Like he said “it sucks to look back and see that u forgot to live “ Thank u sooo much for making this video , I really needed it and it made me feel like someone understands me

For me, I'm not in college solely to get a job. I'm here to learn more of what I love and a happy consequence is that a degree will also render me more employable. So with that said, "good enough" isn't really a concept I can relate to. I just want to get an A in every course, since an A is an indicator that I've mastered the material. However, if I don't get an A, it's not like I've failed. I'm still learning if I get a C. So if I employed the concept of "good enough", that benchmark would be merely to not fail, which is not my ambition. Love the video though. I decided a while a go that I wouldn't be grinding anymore and I agree with lots of what you said, particularly about enjoying student life more.

Work smart, never hard. I'm glad you talked about this topic. We all strive for the best grades. What matters is getting the grade that satisfies the requirements to get onto the next level. Try your best, aim for the top, if you fall short then you will still have passed. BUT do not lose your sanity and peace in the process! Personally, I try my best, I now aim for progress. I've learned that tests vary upon circumstances. Some personal eg lack of prep or things happening in life, or the assessors eg questions not worded well or misleading, questions that cover topics which are not in the syllabus (you'll need surprised how often this occurs)

i absolutely love this video. I also had this realization last year during the lockdown. i was rlly forced to look inwards and think about the things that would matter to me at the end of my life. it’s morbid, but i feel that we need to be frequently reminded we will die. we will be forgotten, and we will be forced to look back at the way we spent the majority of our life time. did we spend it helping people? were we stressed for the majority of it? was any of the stress worth it? did we neglect the people we loved as a result of a professional endeavour? sometimes we’re so focused on perfecting the next step in our 5-year plan that we fail to realize that life extends far past our goals. i don’t want to look back on life and realize that my entire life and personality surrounded academia. i want to remember the laughter, the music, the good food, and the tears i shared with others in my life.

You brought forward a very under-valued aspect of living - that living life is equal to or more important than learning and reciting information. Bravo and thank you.

I agree except for some cases (e.g., competitive Asian countries) when having the highest grade in class could help profs notice you and give you the best opportunities. It also helps when the top grad programs ask for high gpa or UK class honours. When it’s this competitive, it’s hard to let go of any small points you could ace.

I’m so so thankful for this recommendation, I’ve been studying and trying so hard to prove myself….. 🥺🥺 it’s rly tiring and causes me so much anxiety. I’ll take it one step at a time, hopefully I’ll learn to cope better and not feel bad about myself when I take breaks :”)

Definitely something I learned in high school. Everyone around me was so focused and studying so hard when I didn't do as much. Felt pressured to do more and then eventually I realized, why am I working so much? I changed my learning method, the way I do things, and though I didn't get a high grade, I did have a life as you mentioned. Just doing enough feels better than doing too much just for that number and to be on top.

OBRIGADA!

I totally agree with everything you're saying. I had that problem in high school. Studying long hours, neglecting every other part of my life. And when I graduated with Honors and a scholarship, I still felt like I wasted my teenage years. Now that I'm in college, I'm trying alot more to live life and have other experiences outside of school, like meeting new people, working part time jobs, playing sports and joining clubs... I think it's totally worth it. If you want to have a balanced lifestyle and experience everything life has to offer, shooting for "Good Enough" is what you want to do. Also always remember that school isn't everything. Applying for part time jobs taught me that employers look for alot more than a diploma, so you could be the guy with 100% in school and still be rejected if there's someone with more work experience in your field.

I still go to school (last year, Italy) and I usually get pretty good grades so It's not like I'm super lazy about studying but when you introduced the concept of "good enough" it opened my eyes, in a good ways. I was already trying to approach studying in a rational way and without anxiety really giving it only the time that I was willing to give because of my own decisions, but I had never thought about the god enough benchmark.

Something about the last part of this video really touched me. I'm now in my 2nd year of Law school, its a small local law college in my hometown and all these pressure about your friends going to top tier universities + Getting jobs, really makes your lose sleep sometimes. And i've found that i've to constantly remind myself to focus on my own journey. Studying is only a part of that journey and this channel really helps me on that. Thanks and Best wishes from india ❤️

Dude I really needed to hear this. Feel shameful to admit this but I really don't know when to stop my self. I just keep on pushing and I'm so toxic to myself like I'm in this cycle that I cant get out of. I know its bad but I can't stop. People might call me a narcissist but I just cant help myself heal. I've been to count less therapists but turns out its nothing the docs can help me with its something i need to work on. Idk what to do. Honestly these vids really help me, you guys have no idea how. And if anyone else who reads this threads sees this and is going through the same problems just remember mental health comes first and repairing it isn't so easy but its possible to do so and it takes a lot of time.

I'm so glad I watched this video at 4 am. I literally couldn't fall asleep because of my upcoming exams in 2 days. I was super hungry after having been on a very unhealthy diet and long hours of studying at the library DAILY for the past 2 weeks. Peer pressure to perform better than my friends at med school has been eating me alive. I couldn't sleep because I was anxious and super Hungry cuz all that atp I spent from studying long hours. I tried to convince myself to go to sleep on a hungry stomach instead of getting up and eat because I would lose valuable sleep time if I did get up and eat. I'm so glad that i saw your video, it reminds me that self-care is the most important, I shouldn't sacrifice sleep or helthy diet for meaningless grades that don't matter after I graduate. I thought I've figured that out already during undergrad, but I guess peer pressure made me lose track of what's important again. 😰

Love the video, glad I learned this lesson early in life like 7th grade from an engineering student. He had a 4.0 and was bummed that all it took to get a great job at his internship was a 3.0. He has strived for a phd since, while I just did good enough in high school to get into the college I wanted and finishing my degree this semester in engineer with a good enough gpa and great memories. Thanks for this video

your talk of this topic is just a real thing, a reality that a lot of people pass or ignore, like myself at times. I do agree on all your points you made but i feel people still would abuse that good enough with procrastination so maybe a mix of discipline and good enough is the key for a lot of people. Your content is well shot and a lot of people can see the love you put in it, thank you.

Matty you are so right about this..at first i really really hesitated to watch this video because for some reason i thought it would make me feel lazy but you have a point there ...iam such a nerd but i have only recently decided to get a great balance between life and academics because as we(students) focus on books life keeps on passing by but we need to live the life as well...I always thought attending parties or listening to music or doing anything outside class would legit make me dense for some reason but that is not the case it all goes back to planning and we can always find time to do other stuff with great planning and God of course. Thanks guys i really appreciate your videos...all the way from Uganda

This was such a great video! I'm about to study for a dual degree and i was wondering if grinding day in day out for two masters level programmes would be worth it and this was keeping me up all night since the past week, I was already stressing out for something I hadn't even started. Turns out I just need to pass, the person who would score the highest would ultimately obtain the same qualification as me lol thank you so much!!

Life is happening now ,and not at the end of the marathon🥲🥲🥲 that hit really hard🥲🥲🥲 As an asian student I was told that once you finish your GCE Ordinary level exam you will get three whole month vacation so put your effort now and study hard for it , and on the last day itself of O/Level examination we were given brochures containing tons of information about Advanced level tution and forced to attend them disregarding the vacations . Then we were told that once we are done with Advanced levels you are just free to do anything in life so put your total effeort and in the end you'll find peace once u enter a university so here I am currently studying for Alevels and not focusing on any "fun stuff " onlu believing that" Peace " will come soon but deep down I know seeing our depressed elder sisters and brothers at universities that Peace is just an illusion🥲🥲🥲🥲

This hit me so hard. I come from middle but I go to one of the most expensive schools in my country. my parents sent my to the school because going for any other school is basically the same thing as not going to school ( constant strikes). I always struggle with school but don't know who to talk to since everyone in my family expects me to be a top student and get a scholarship. This expectation is kind of killing me because I don't know who to talk or what to do

this video came out at exactly the right time and was so meaningful to me. I was shooting for the stars for my step 2 ck score, and got a score lower than expected. I was really sad, however I did hit the exact average step 2 ck score (and also exact step 1 average) for my specialty of choice. Your video really spoke to me. I am going to stop wallowing about missing my target by 1 point and instead rejoice that I still met what was "good enough". your message is really great and needs to be heard by all med students. we get into our own head and perfectionism becomes the thief of life.
