I’ve now owned the X-H2S. A7IV, and R6ii. If I had to pick one based on images SOOC or just slight edits it would be the Fuji. I LOVE the build quality of the Canon but it’s so heavy compared to the Fuji setup. The R6ii AF is shockingly good. The high ISO noise levels of the R6ii are amazing. .. We have a trip to Boston coming up & I KNEW I was taking the R6ii .. but I picked up a used X-T4 (and X-Pro2 on the way) ..and I think Fuji kit will be coming to Boston. This video nails my experience in that I get sharp & well balanced images from the Canon.. but I think I’m willing to give up razor sharp for the colors & tones of the Fuji.

I have used C1 extensively over the last 5 years and honestly even with the reduction in sharpness while editing I still prefer Lightroom as a platform for managing a catalogue and colour correcting. C1 handles the de-Bayering of the sensor so much better than Lightroom but it’s about more than just that one element for me.
@LemuelMelendez
@LemuelMelendez Жыл бұрын
@@bytomw Cant argue with that. I still def use Lightroom like 80% of the time. Yet, there are specific scenarios where I just know C1 is going to be miles better. (ie headshots and landscapes)

That B cam with the 56 on it!!!! Talk about shallow depth of field 👌👌 I sold all of my Sony gear to move to the Fuji system. I couldn’t be happier. There was nothing wrong with Sony, but there was also nothing special either. The Fuji files are something special. Also, to your point around depth of field FF bs APSC, well, outside of gear reviews, it’s so rare to sit there and compare the two. 99% of folks would see images in isolation, and be happy! Thanks for a great video.

It seams absolutely lovely. Honestly I haven’t had a chance to use it for stills yet (it was my last addition and the 85mm focal length is the least used in my kit) but I’m looking forward to giving it a solid test. I’m also looking at the Mitakon 35mm 0.95 and speed boosters as alternatives to get my “fast 50mm” look.

Very precise and insightful video Tom! I’m a fellow Fujifilm X shooter since the XT2 and am loving the system. I’m dreaming of one day adding the GFX to my workflow, if and when my work justifies it. Agree with you, Canon’s pricing is just ridiculous. That RF 50mm F1.2 costs more then both the GF80mm F1.7 and GF110mm F2, and both these GF lenses are medium format lenses and both have arguably better image quality than the Canon.

@@bytomw absolutely. In fact, with today’s UK price, the Fujifilm GFX50S II + GF80mm F1.7 is a whopping £1755 cheaper than the Canon RF + RF50mm F1.2! And if we were to kind of compare apples to apples, the GFX100S + GF110mm F2 combo is still £240 cheaper than a Canon R5 + RF85mm F1.2. This is crazy! I think if anyone is a portrait photographer and fast autofocus isn’t a priority, then both the GFX option is a much better option than Canon.

Wow, just wow. I was already considering getting the X-H2S as my main camera for wedding and portrait photography... I think this video just helped push me over the edge. When you showed the small difference in clarity between the Fuji and the Canon, with the added perspective of the price difference...well...I'll leave that to each person's opinion whether it's worth it to them or not, but I'd argue, not really. The difference could only be noticed because the photos were compared *side by side*...for client work, given the better looking colors of the Fuji (what really sets the tone and feel of a photo anyways), I think it's not worth the added expense. I'd love to see some stills with the 56mm 1.2f and check out how creamy the bokeh is, but given what I saw with your footage of it in this video, I'd say it will slay just nicely. Again, thanks for helping me decide. Sub'd.

This got me thinking about going all in on Fuji for my general work cameras. I've been looking at the Fuji XH2/s reviews and like what I'm seeing, ok I'm reducing the size of the sensor slightly but very rarely are my images printed that large. I don't do or offer any video at the moment but really want to get into making short films and need to learn so maybe the XH2s is better option than the XH2 for me ...

Long story short unless you are shooting your primes at an aperture wider than F2 all the time on full frame the Fuji can match the overall aesthetics of full frame. If you want or need shallower depth of field I’d go for the 80mm 1.7 on your GFX (or awesome manual lenses like the Voigtlander 58mm 1.4). Aside from the full frame at 1.4 look Fuji basically nails everything else, the XH2s has excellent autofocus, dynamic range and the noise looks pleasing.

ARJ on the tube!!! So good to see his beautiful face!! Anyway, more to the point, this video was super insightful... I watched it a few weeks ago and I'm now coming back to say thank you!! I'm in the Sony Wedding Photographer brigade and although technically amazing, I feel the Sony's are too clinical, almost soulless, and I feel stale and predictable when using it. I've had an off-and-on love affair with Fuji for years and always feel more creative and happier when using them. The depth of field difference and raw file quality/sharpness were what held me back from using them professionally. I'm coming to the conclusion that wide open isn't always the best, especially at weddings and that is ok. Then, after picking up an X-T5 to try, the quality of the Raws at 40MP now matches my Sony files, has better colour and are much easier to manipulate and get the look you want. But I wouldn't have even looked again if your video wasn't so concise and honest!! Thanks Tom!! As a side note, if you want the RAF's to have clarity and sharpness in LR, DXO Pure Raw is a game-changer!

@bytomw Жыл бұрын
I'm really glad you enjoyed the video Martin. I was in the same boat as you with the Sony camera situation and having it feel like things where a little too clinical! I haven't tried that new 40MP sensor out yet mainly because of just how happy I have been with the XH2s but I'm gonna see if I can get my hands on an XT5 for a while. On the DXO front I have tired them on my fuji files and felt that they affected the colour of the files more than I would like. They add insane amounts of detail though and absolutely give you a sharper more modern look with little effort! Thanks again for commenting and I hope you'll stick around!

Did you do a pixel mapping in the camera menu before sending the X-H2S back? Often cameras come with pixels that appear stuck from the factory, but it’s a result of cosmic radiation during long shipping periods. The calibration is thrown out as a result, hence why there’s a pixel mapping function in the menu. Fuji, Sony and Nikon have separate menu options for it whereas Canon cameras do it when a manual sensor cleaning is performed in the menu.

Hey Womz, My first edition had a really pronounced issue that wasn't fixed by the Pixel Mapping, but my new pair of XH2s where both fine and pixel mapping was all that was needed. This is good advice for anyone else experiencing issues like this though!

Yes. I have the 18 f1.4, 33 f1.4, 56 f1.2 WR and 90 f2. They are all very sharp, but the 90 is so freakishly sharp, it looks like medium format. The new 56 f1.2 is a very close 2nd, but no complaints about any of them and they are a fraction of the cost and size of the Sony GM lenses I used to use. The weight of the system, the ergonomics, the color and the size and quality of the lenses have made it much easier for me to shoot long days at weddings and I agree with you that I have to fuss less with the color.

Wow! Great article and awesome video. Thanks for time and efforts. I have been thinking to go back Canon at these days. After shooting weddings for 11 years with Canon I moved to Fuji 3 years ago. It has just started with the magical X100 series which I bought for a 3rd or a personal daily camera. I didn't shoot so many weddings at the pandemic and I really had issues with the Fujifilm cameras at these weddings. I had X-pro3 and XT-4 lately. Their AF systems are really not on the way I am looking for. ISO performances are really terrible when you compare even old Canon 5D Mark iv. The main reason I switched to Fuji was compactness. I had pains in my hands, back after more than 12 hour weddings with those stone heavy Canon 5Ds and lenses. I bought the new XH2-S when it first realized. I have had chance to shoot with in few weddings. The AF system really works very well. I don't know it is superior to Canon or Sony but it least it is a new era for FujiFilm systems. The ISO performance is still not show any progress! I really want to shoot at 6400 without any hesitation, but it is not still possible. The other important issue is the lack of back light shooting. The dynamic range does not allow your creativty. I shoot a wedding yesterday and it is really hard to focus on back light conditions and dynamic range is not on the page I am looking for. I am also a cof user. I uses two flashes in the corner as a backlight on the dance floor and one with me as a fill flash. The Canon 5D mark iv never failed in that kind of situations when I tried to add these lights as backlight without curtaining them. I haven't come up any videos about back light problems in Fuji. I think it hasn't been someones major problem. Your video makes me really thing.I am certain about going back to Canon before watching your video. I have XT-4, X-Pro3, X-H2S, (just sold my lovely X-100V), 18 f1.4, 23 f2, 35 f2, 56 f1.2 and 10-24 f4. It won't be easy to sell the whole system. By the way, I shoot 90% with 18 f1.4 and x-h2s and I am super happy with that focal length after shooting 35mm equivalent all time. I am not sure for going back right now but I need to shoot a whole wedding with r6 first I guess. The other thing I am pretty sure is getting rid of X-Pro3 and X-T4 immediately. After getting used to the X-h2s AF system you can not shoot with these two again.
@bytomw
@bytomw Жыл бұрын
I can see the appeal. The R6 is very clean up to iso 3200 and still clean at iso 6400 that said I add grain to most of my images on export and the way that the noise in my Fuji images presents looks really pleasing to my eye. I have had fewer focus issues with the Fuji than the canon and I haven’t experienced any of the dynamic range issues you mentioned with it, but as always a camera is a tool and if you want something different that’s totally fine. I will say that size and weight will still be a problem on canon. The bodies are heavier than Fuji but the real issue is the weight and size of the lenses. I shot a wedding with the R5 and 50mm 1.2 and a guest asked me if it was a 70-200 I was using. Hope you enjoy experimenting with the canon kit though!

Excellent review/comparison. Nice one. I'm a longtime Fuji user -- coming to them with the original X100. I'm on an X-T4 at the moment, but planning on upgrading next year. Obviously, the H2s doesn't have the same 'classic' handling, with the dials, but I actually realised that I very rarely use them anyway! Only the aperture ring on the lenses. Given the price though, I was considering the Canon R6. So, this comparison has been really helpful. I was leaning more toward staying with Fuji anyway. For a video about comparing two very different camera bodies, it is nice that you emphasise the difference in colour rendition you get. On the other hand, the difference in background separation is mainly about the lens used (33mm f1.4 vs 50mm f1.2), to know if you can be satisfied with the F1.4 APS-C lens, you could just stop the 50mm down to F2.1 to get identical results to what you would get if you shot it on the Fuji system before you go get the body and lens. Interesting is that the Canon 50mm F1.8 is significantly lighter than the Fuji and still produces more background separation (although at the cost of far lower build quality)
@bytomw
@bytomw 9 ай бұрын
I included that comparison later in the video. I even addressed the difference in depth, shooting the 50mm 1.8 and 50mm 1.2 at F2.2 and the 33mm 1.4 wide open to give an equivalent Depth of field.

Not to mention many Canon “L” lenses. Sold all of my Canon gear & moved to Fuji. IMHO, Fuji camera s & lenses offer tremendous value for their price point.

I don’t shoot my canon enough and when I do pull it out for gigs I’m experiencing frustration with the controls. My fujis are just so much more intuitive for me in making quick adjustments. I do appreciate the subject separation from the canon…beginning to look at what Fuji has to offer…

I was looking to upgrade my t3i, and Fuji came to my mind, was looking into the EOS R (used) or the new R7, but definitely the lens options for Canon APS-C turns me down a little, also because if you third party lenses you need the adapter, and the whole thing can get way to big sometime, like with the Sigma 18-35 1.8! Anyway, I'm looking forward to see more of your content! Keep going strong

Thanks for the kind words! Honestly if you’re worried about the EF to RF adapter on canon I really wouldn’t. It’s rock solid and has absolutely no negative effect on image quality. I also absolutely loved my EOS R. It’s focusing system isn’t as advanced as either of these options sadly though. If I was on a budget and looking at Fuji I’d be taking a long and hard look at the XT5.

@bytomw You're welcome! Sorry, I think I didn't make my self clear, I'm worried about the size of the camera + adp + lens, it can't get very big sometimes, and then you lose the benefits of an APS-C camera, since you don't have third party lenses with the RF mount, like Fuji have so many compact options already, with hight quality. But is always a hard decision to make hehee thanks for the response Tom! Have a nice week

Quality video mate, I am a Fujifilm XT2 shooter (mostly photography) but have been on the mission to do a bit more video work. Of course, everyone under the sun recommends Canon, especially the R5, however, the angle you mention of the color reproduction is a huge benefit that I've admittedly taken for granted. The big drawback for me and almost making the leap towards Canon was simply put the shooting success rate. Maybe a topic for a video? Seeing how many shots are usable in sharpness using the correct eye for sharpness (the eye closest to camera). Anyways, I've seem to have ranted a bit but I am now looking to see if the XH2 or the XH2S is best for my needs. Final thought, let's not kid ourselves, if Canon dropped its prices to Fujifilm levels, we would all bail on Fuji. Change my mind! :)

Canon RP + RF 1.8 lenses? 😅
@bytomw
@bytomw Жыл бұрын
I has the R5 as well as the R6 along with a full range or RF lenses… and I still went Fuji. It’s not about price it’s about understanding the tool you enjoy and how to get the best out of it. The XH2s is also the same price as the R6ii in the UK (although canon has no affordable midrange lenses at all) I just shot a couple’s shoot and I got the green light to edit it live. So if you want to see the hit rate on the new crop of Fujis feel free to watch! It’s not all that fair to compare an XT2 to the modern canon mirrorless, not only is the XT2 3 generations older than the canons the price point was significantly lower and mirror less AF in general hadn’t reached the level we have seen since the launch of the Sony A9 and A7iii. All that said these are all tools for a purpose. If you want maximum colour separation and pleasantness the Fuji is a winner, but the canon is amazing too if your happy with an overall warmer tone to your images, I have to make a tonne of HSL adjustments for the canon to get to where I like it but it could be perfect for you out of the box. Choice is amazing.

The Fuji is more expensive than cheap RF lenses because the construction of the lenses and the glass quality is better better. I never shoot a portrait, even at 85 mm FF equiv., at less than f4, because of the thin depth of field making the eyes, nose and ears look weird, as they all can’t be in decent focus at once at f < 4 approx. on top of that, the Fuji 50-140 f2.8 is freaking amazing!

Do you ever adjust the masking slider for the sharpening in Lightroom? It can really help with sharpening an image in general, allowing you to easily adjust what is being sharpened, but it also really helps fine tune the sharpening for Fuji files, IMO. I just noticed in your examples that masking was set to the default 0. It can really be the difference in sharpening important details, and a blanket sharpening across everything.
@bytomw
@bytomw Жыл бұрын
Hi JG, That absolutely helps but honestly the best solution I have found is to just turn the sharpening off and do it on export or as part of my grain process. I tend to finish my images with a batch process in photoshop to get it ready for publishing and that gives much better results than trying to deal with the raw sharpening in Lightroom.
@TheJ_G
@TheJ_G Жыл бұрын
@@bytomw That’s fair. I’ll have to give that a try. Admittedly I don’t do a lot of batch edits/exports. Although I probably should to free up some time on the back end. Ha. I’ve set a few presets to masking around 65, 75, and 95 as it usually just sharpens the areas that are in focus the most. Usually giving things like eyes or finer details a little extra pop with 95, and whole subject a little pop with 75, and a slightly missed focus shot a fighting chance to be usable with around 50-65. All while keep actual out of focus areas soft as intended. What I usually try to avoid is a blanket sharpening across an entire image, especially with Fuji files, because I don’t like it when out of focus areas get sharpened, too. But maybe the results are better like you’ve shown when doing it within the export process. I’ll give it a try. Thanks for the tip! Cheers!

A better option is to get the R6 Mark II and Sigma Art 50 1.4. This costs the same as the Fuji setup, is just as sharp as the RF 50 1.2, and actually the Sigma lens focuses faster than the Canon. You get that full frame look for the price of the crop sensor setup. And the R6 II autofocus is way better than both the R6 original and the XH2s (I see this channel having issues with AF on the Fuji as time passes as many others are too). Also, the R6 II has better colours than the original R6 as well (though that is subjective), has more resolution, and better video features.

I use these cameras for work so the initial cost of the system matters less to me than some (although it’s still important for sure). Do you think the XH2s is good in low light scenarios? (As compared to competitors, R6, A7 series, etc)
@bytomw
@bytomw Жыл бұрын
It’s not. The R6 especially has one of the cleanest sensors that I have ever used. The X-H2s needs work to get the image as clean even at low ISOs. It shoot my X-H2s at 640 all the time (with DR400 on) and I choose to run AI denoise on every final image in Lightroom.

I have been working with my Sony a7rlll the last four years , came from canon 6d, and wow the autofocus was amazing, but honestly I always felt it was a bit to good for me, like I was not fully connected to the process, might sound weird but I believe it’s like driving a manual Vs automatic car, it’s just very different experience. Also coming from canon to Sony, the colors where horrible and the system was just overwhelming, too much functions. I just got the Fuji xt 5 and I’m exited to try it out. Im a bit worried about going down from full frame and loosing the dept of field but me and Sony just don’t work so I have yo try ❤

Great video comparing two amazing lenses. One aspect I think you missed that’s worth noting is the size/weight difference between the RF50 f1.2 and XF33 f1.4. If you’re looking for a smaller/lighter kit, then the Canon is not your ticket. I’m fortunate to own both lenses. I have an R6 and the shots that come from that RF50 f1.2 are just incredible. That lens is so razor sharp that it makes that 20mp sensor outshine and rival some 30mp sensors. I don’t know how it does it, but it’s amazing. I also own a Fuji X-T2 that I’ve never been able to bring myself to part with because it is such a great little camera, and I picked up the 33mm for it. Now that is a travel friendly kit that goes everywhere with me. It’s my family shoots, holidays, parties, etc … camera, but whenever I want that extra image quality-that top shelf tier quality, then I’m taking the R6 with the Rf50 1.2 beast. Both kits will produce beautiful pictures regardless.

You're right, I pretty much only talked about the IQ in some of the most typical situations I shoot in, I'll absolutely be expanding and covering other areas like performance, form factor etc in other videos. You're pretty much dead on with you conclusions though, they are both amazing lenses. The 33mm may not perform as well technically as the RF lens I love the results. They have a character I don't see in the RF 1.2. You nailed it about the detail on lower resolution sensors too. I used the 1.2 on the EOS-R and R5 and it looked just as sharp on those bodies as the R6. It's outstanding.

Bought a X-T5 (af issues) and a HS2 (with a lens mount problem out of the box) got a refund (I just asked for a store credit) ... sold my existing 8 fujinon lenses, went simple with a Canon R6II, RF lenses 14-35, 24-105, 70-200 and honestly couldn't be happier. Files are beautiful, high ISO is amazing, AF is fantastic, eye detect is incredible, app is easy. My transition back to Canon has been a great experience, the RF 'L" lenses are the best. Just my experience.

That’s absolutely true. The 33mm 1.4 has a less pronounced background blur than the the 50mm 1.2. But aside from that one and 1/3 stop difference in depth of field the Fuji is better in every other way (at least for my taste)

Honestly I try never to touch the tone curve. It’s really hard to make adjustments that can be changed image to image so for me it’s very much a case of only using it if I can’t make the adjustment by another method. The same goes for the colour grading panel. That said curves are a powerful tool.

You need to run your Fuji files throughAI denoise or just enhance detail in LrC to have them be demosaiced properly. That said... I hate oversharpening and 40 in LrC is too sharp no matter the brand. Oh and the 50mm F1.2 photos look way better. They have that airiness and highlight handling that only FF/MF can achieve.
@bytomw

I agree, I normally set sharpening to 0 in Lr for most of my canon files. The 50mm 1.2 RF especially is bonkers when it comes to detail and needs softening in many situations not sharpening.

I agree its not as smooth sailing with fujifilm over canon(lowlight, autofocus)the problem is canon still does not have a 35mm 1.4 and this is just not normal in 2023.You can shoot a full wedding with a X-H2S with a 23mm 1.4 a 33mm 1.4 and a 56mm 1.2..one camera with 3 prime lenses will cost you $5000 for the same price as a Canon r5 and a 50mm 1.2.COSTING $5000.This is why I always recommend people go with fujifilm unless you have lots of money and don't need a 35mm lolol.

That's a fair point, the price difference is substantial. I don't ever feel like a Fujifilm Lens investment is going t break the bank. That said right now I cannot get the fuji system to focus reliably and I might end up having to re-buy at least one of those Canons.

You must be doing something wrong because there is definitely a difference between the two editing software and the way they process the raw files & Lightroom is definitely.. not the way to go with the Fuji file.. if you are looking for the best results when it comes to sharpening capture one or iridium is the way to go

You're entitled to your opinion. That said I teach Lightroom and Capture One and I have been a beta tester for colour styles and ICC Profiles in C1 and Presets and Profiles in Lightroom. It's not a lack of understanding that formed my opinion, quite the opposite. I didn't say there was no difference between the two. I expressly said there were differences in both colour rendition and contrast. I also didn't say Capture One had bad colour or contrast, it absolutely doesn't. I said I prefer the results from Lightroom even though the sharpening panel doesn't work as intended with X-Trans files. There is more to an image than sharpness.

Why not compare the Canon R62? No mention of shooting in low light?
@bytomw
@bytomw Жыл бұрын
Great question! At the time of recording the R6 II wasn't available, I owned the R6 from launch so I compared what I had to what I was contemplating a move to. To add thoughts on the R6ii though it looks great! the still IQ seems to be nearly identical to the R6 from what I can tell, it does fix some of my complaints around video overheating though! No mention of low light largely because I'm a commercial/corporate photographer primarily and the camera was pristine up to ISO 3200, as such it wasn't an issue for my use case. I typically shoot it at ISO 640 with the extended dynamic range settings on (DR400) so I'm shooting it in it's most noise prone settings and the camera has still been exemplary. the R6 has less visible noise at all ISOs but I still prefer the look of the XH2s. I have some other image examples prepped to show the noise levels on the XH2s but haven't had a chance to make a full video on the subject yet.

Interesting that you found the autofocus better on the Fuji. I found the opposite. I had the XT3 and the 33 1.4. Sold it and bought the R6 and, inter alia, the 50 1.2. They eye autofocus on the Fuji was unreliable. The eye autofocus on the R6 is much better, it is so good, Canon must be in possession of extraterrestrial technology. Everyone who has compared autofocus on the Fujis, including the XT5, unanimously has stated that autofocus on Fuji is nowhere near Canon, or Sony. I had moved from my Canon 5D MkIII to the Fuji XT3, and now I’m back to Canon with the R6, and I’m here to stay.
