I've been a Sony Fanboy for years, but I finally decided to switch over to the Lumix L Mount system. In this video we talk about some of the different features Lumix has to offer and where I still think they have room to improve.

I had the A7iv and then sold it for the FX30. I did start filmmaking with the Panasonic GH5. And I loved it for the colors and skin tones. Regarding lenses, I pretty much stick with primes and occasionally a zoom. But, the S5iix ability to record to an SSD is a great benefit. And I can also connect it to a Blackmagic 12G monitor to record BRAW. Having had the BMPCC4K, I really loved working with BRAW. To me the image coming out of the BMPCC4K had a nice warm film like look to it. I still haven't decided on when I would get the S5iix. But, it is definitely a choice I am seriously considering.

This was an honest breakdown, and although you preferred Sony historically, you didn’t allow brand loyalty to explore what you needed in another tool. Well done!

Yup I’m still holding onto a little Sony gear for now… but depending on what Sony/Panasonic releases for the next camera I may go all in on Panasonic.

Good info on these systems. As a Nikon user for years, I picked up a Sony FX30 for video use when I was experiencing auto focus issues with my Z6 II, when recording videos for my YT channel I later got the A7R V and ended up trading it for the Z8. While I'm not a fan of the FX30's colors out of the camera, I find I can use SLog and then grade to get a better look, A7R V was much better and close to Nikon's WB look. For me, traveling around South East Asia, the fan in the FX30, the audio handle, video capabilities and the smaller footprint, is why I chose to keep it. I agree there is some noise in low light situations but that isn't a big thing and can be handled in software (I use Resolve) however, the FX30 has better stabilization and a better quality screen (though I wished it had the A7R V's screen) than the A7 IV. Let's hope Panasonic can tweak the AF on their cameras some more, I started my YT channel with a Panasonic HC-X1 camcorder and I liked how the colors looked from it. I'm curious to see what the upcoming S1 II cameras will bring.

Yeah I want to sell my FX30 and wait for the S1 II, but who knows when Panasonic will release it.

@@adamtalkstech It should be out before summer, hopefully. Leica released their SL3 which is what the S1 R should be based on, when the SL3 S hits, then we know the S1H won't be far behind.

Once you use anamorphic on one you’ll never go back. I just got an S5ii x and I still have my a7siii and using anamorphic on the lumix is wayyyyy better. The stabilization alone is worth it!

How does estabilization work with open gate? Does it crop in slightly?

I use the standard stabilization and I think crop only applies to the active mode

Thanks for the video. I own an S1 and S5 (original) and sometimes think that I should have gone with Sony full frame (I do own three sony aps-c cameras... got to get around to selling them). The thing that makes the a7 IV a no-go is the (potential) overheating. I have had overheating issues with my a5100, a6000 and a6500 cameras and it's just unacceptable. I know that there are SOME people who shoot a lot with the a7 IV and NEVER have overheating issues. But then there some people who have overheating issues on it real quickly despite the normal precautions. It just seems like there is no rhyme or reason as to when the cameras might overheat. (Gerald Undone recently did a video on overheating and he said that there was basically no way to predict how long a camera would last before overheating.)

Yeah the A7IV still randomly shuts off on me, never for overheating though, the light hasn't come on for me on the screen. But it was shutting off while filming talking head and that was the nail in the coffin for me on shooting long form with it. Will be really interesting to see what the S1M2 has to offer. Lumix still needs that next level of camera, but you could argue minus the 4k60 crop and no 4k120, the S5 II/x are both super close to the a7siii

Better to go with the S5iiX over the S5II? I have the money for both, not sure if I need all the features of the X other than SSD though

definitely an issue in some situations. hasn't been an issue for the way I shoot yet.

Thanks for this review and finally somebody noticed the exposure issue when the shutter is half pressed, it's very annoying! In low light the screen actually darkens and will go completely dark if the light levels get low enough, hopefully it's something Panasonic address.

Yeah, it's really annoying. I talked to some other videographer friends and they said it didn't bother them, but I definitely don't like that

This happens on my G9 but not on the S1, and I find it super annoying. Right when I take a shot it changes how it looks, and I wonder "did I get the shot? Is the exposure right?" I really want to like this camera, but there are some quality of life issues. Thx for highlighting it Adam.

THE FATAL FLAW that killed it for me was that the camera "forgets" the focus point in MF mode when switched off and on ( when using non focus clutch lenses ) !

Yeah the AF system is still weird to me. I haven't fully gotten used to it yet.

I just listed my FX30 in eBay because the FX30 is deliberately crippled by Sony because they have to protect the FX3. FX30, hardware wise is capable of 6k30 open gate. It is capable of 6k recording 16x9. They will NEVER let You because then it could outshine the FX3 which brings in a lot of money for them.

Yeah, for me that + the noise have been the two biggest annoyances with the FX30 which is sad because I love that camera and it's so usable overall, but I need to put mine on ebay soon. I wish Lumix had a 20-70 F4 lens like sony, I just got the 24-105 L mount and love it but that thing is huge.

@@adamtalkstechI hate everything about it the more I used it. You can’t white balance of a white card when using your memory recall modes. As a still camera it is unnecessarily CRIPPLED beyond a joke. Convenient mode dials replaced with buttons…. Yeah I will not miss this camera lol. You are 100% right though about the LMount - not enough options and very expensive BUT the 20-60 kit lense is ridiculously GOOD!!!! Hard to justify $2,000 on a new LMount lens.

well believe it or not it's probably impossible for sony to make a medium format camera with their e mount because they can only barely fit a full frame sensor in it so sony might have to add a new mounting system if they ever made one

Why not just get an FX3? Not 6k, but the 4k 120fps footage looks amazing, I haven't had any issues with image quality. I have an A7IV too as a b-cam but yeah the FX3 low (800) and high ISO (12800) is flawless. Although I understand the SSD solution.

Open gate was the main thing I've been wanting for a year now. and just the impending release of the FX3 m2 kept me from wanting to go all in on it, but believe me, I wanted the FX3 for over a year now too lol. I could shoot almost everything I do with the FX3+ 20-70F4 and 24mm f 1.4

@@adamtalkstech yep open gate is definitely worth it, hopefully the FX3 II will have 6k open gate and also built in ND 😅 but yeah the FX3 is a beast camera with the dual ISO in slog3. I just recently sold my 24-70 Sigma and 70-180 Tamron to get a 35-150 f2-2.8 Tamron and it just stays on my FX3 all the time for video work. And if I need to go wider I use my Sony 16-35 GM… (I use my primes on the A7IV).

FX3 should have been the side step, fixes and issues with those other cameras. Crop factor, noise, video features

What lenses would you want? It’s not as good as Sony but I’ve tried 6 of the Panasonic lenses and been able to find exactly what I needed minus the fact most of the primes are 1.8 instead of 1.4. I do wish they had a 20-70 f4 like Sony does though :)

Since you don't want to say that one camera is better than another I will. Sony absolutely destroys Lumix with autofocus. Lumix absolutely destroys Sony with video capture options. And Olympus completely destroys both with in body image stabilization. I'm so tired of Sony people and Lumix people talking about in body image stabilization. After using Olympus for years. I pick up a Lumix or Sony camera and wonder whether or not the in body image stabilization is even on.

Interesting. I agree on autofocus. LUMIX is passable but doesn’t blow my mind. I haven’t tried Olympus so can’t comment on their stabilization but lumix stabilization crushes Sony.

@@LumixGang Back in the day. Head to Head. Micro 4/3 Olympus. Versus micro 4/3 Lumix. Olympus in body image stabilization destroyed Lumix. Not even close. Olympus and Lumix should have gotten together. Shared more engineering. I waited for Olympus cameras to have better video and Lumix cameras to have better autofocus and for their lenses to support both cameras combined stabilization. But. I got tired of waiting and bought a Sony. Smart move for Lumix to go full frame. Love their S5IIX. But it seems like the same people at Lumix who wanted their micro 4/3 cameras autofocus to be average against Olympus. Now want their full frame cameras autofocus to be average against Sony.

I had the s5II and is not better than his Sony counterpart why? Terrible skin tones, oversharp image even in vlog but specially in the normal profiles making them useless. The s5II vs fx30 for example in lowlight, you can see less noise in the s5II, but also a lot less of detail, cause Panasonic apply a noise reduction imposible to turn of that kill all the detail, and make the image look like an smartphone , 🎉if you connect an external monitor you will get a noise impossible to fix in post. Very laggy camera several seconds to start and review video. The most expensive 1.8 primes in the market. And the last thing, Panasonic virtually have gift the s5iix for free to every single KZfaq creator. Now I’m asking this, if your camera is soo good, why you need to do this?

The S5ii/x is better value for money. I have always used Lumix cameras. Personally think Sony and Canon are only wanted as its what KZfaqrs 'content creator's ' use. Always said Sony and Canon are bought for branding. Its cool to say you use Sony or Canon. Lumix is now being talked about more and Sony nor Canon can make a camera that has the same Specs as S5ii for the price

Canon has been the standard forever and then Sony started blowing people’s minds (mine included) with features and performance. The s5ii feels like what Sony felt like in 2017 to me. The more I use the s5 ii x the more u like it. I leave it on for hours and don’t have to worry about overheating and it always just delivers insane quality

@@adamtalkstech Canon was the standers for Photos. Still is the brand that is best for photos. Sony was more for video then the GH5 came out. A camera that had a smaller sensor yet had 4k 60. A true mirrorless body. Sony release the a7iii. A FF in a mirrorless body. I always said imagine if the GH5 had the same AF as the Sony a7ii it would be an even better camera. Now the S5ii/x and all lumix cameras will have the PDAF. And the cameras will always be cheaper then Sony or Canon cameras. It's great to see people like you switching to it. When Sony brings out a new camera they won't be able to match the price of any Lumix cameras. Where lumix will only bring out better cameras for a price that is cheaper then Sony or Conon.
