I found your channel by accident and it is beautiful. I agree with you in many points. I also came to the conclusion that it is very difficult to be absolutely private (Intel ME off, Firewall, all software include drivers must be free and open - its difficult but most important for privacy). I completely agree with you that we need to look for a middle ground to be able to work comfortably at the computer. Great picture, cool font in this video. I really like your voice in the video, English is not my native language, but I understand you perfectly, and KZfaq subtitles are generated almost without errors. I have subscribed and I'm waiting for new videos. P.S. Yubikey is good thing, I want it too) Also Orange Pi, i think its more private than Raspberry)

I am a software developer and I am switching to macOS from linux (I also love linux but I use design software and I don't like dual-boot windows for that), I have explored it a little bit and I am absolutely in love with the interface and options already but I have a question: What about the apple id? what are the tradeoffs of using it vs don't? it is sent to apple on the data collected through http too? how can this affect privacy? You mentioned a video on used Macs. It'd be great. I've always wanted to try MacOS, but never had the opportunity (when I was a teenager I even tried "to Hackintosh"). Hey Edward, I've been backlogged so I didn't get to the episode on buying used Macs. It's still in the back on my mind though. That being said, if your use case works on Linux, there are distributions that are actually quite pleasant to use.

I absolutely agree with your assessment! I believe the 2015's may have been the last great Apple computers. I have a 2015 27" iMac with Catalina. I love this computer! I have maxed out the ram, and eventually will trade out the fusion drive for a full SSD. My wife has the 21.5" 2015 iMac. I have already had to swap out the HD because it had become so slow (those drives are notorious for that). But, now it runs really well. I also picked up a 2012 Mac Pro cheese grater, and upgraded to a dual CPU 3.3 and 64 GB of ram. I have run windows, Linux, and macOs X on it, but now mostly use Mojave. I have a 15" Tuxedo laptop (designed for Linux) which I have now installed Manjaro kde Plasma. For my purposes, this is a phenomenal OS. I really like it! Thank you so much for your videos!

There's one main reason to use ios over android for me (and that's the reason why I'm gonna switch to apple ecosystem in the near future) and that is the fact that apple making money selling hardware, software and services while Google's main source of income is target ads (basically selling your data to everyone who is willing to pay them). That said pretty much every phone except android phones with custom roms running full foss is spying on you that way or another

Apple has been very vocal about providing support for Linux on ARM and in MacOS 11, alas only through virtualization. I wonder if they will reveal a BootCamp like feature for Linux operating systems, which would be a fantastic value-add, especially for folks that want to be dialed more on the security/privacy side of the dichotomy you described, having more control over their environment, and having the freedom to use the OS they are most comfortable with on modern hardware.

I use Apple gear & macOS for many reasons, some are the same as yours, some are my own. Mostly though, it's just superior to everything else for me in terms of a combination of usability, security, capability and is an integral part of an Apple ecosystem that works beautifully for me with my iPhone & iPad. Plus, I service, build, repair, and restore Apple gear for a living so it's my wheelhouse. I do use Linux regularly mind you, and have off and on since kernel 2.0 (1998-99 ish for anyone old enough to remember). I love Linux, it's just not for me when it comes to daily driving.

I had to use mac at work and although some Linux things work there, I found no advantages over Linux. In Linux you can have all with keyboard, i3 window manager makes very efficient interface especially with multiple monitors. Standard Ubuntu is imo more user-friendly then OSX. You have short cuts, scripts, context menus. you can achieve the same goal in multiple ways. OSX on the other hand gives almost no options other then their. I finally got used to all limitations but the feeling that I'm a slave was always with me. In next job I got my Ubuntu, installed i3, wrote bunch of scripts for automation and was free again

If you don't need macOS (Adobe products for example), Linux is totally the way to go. That being said, macOS is pretty hackable. When experimenting with macOS, did you stumble upon Homebrew? I use shortcuts all the time and do many things using iTerm2 vs the UI. My .zshrc is packed with hacks.

@@sunknudsen Elementary OS with their Pantheon desktop environment can be an interresting option for Mac users. I'm a former Mac user and I use Pop!_OS 20.04 as a daily driver (It has the GNOME Desktop by default), I add an extension called "Dash to Dock" to imitate the dock system of MacOS. The problem with these two linux distributions is that they are fixed release distributions, So if you want more up to date software, I would recommand Manjaro GNOME.

Personally, I would never trust any company with my privacy, especially not Apple, because at the end of the day, a company's main goal is to make a profit, not ensure your well-being. No matter how much they claim to care about the privacy of their users, making money is still their first priority and they will go to any lengths for it. That's just the reality of capitalism. Community driven FOSS projects on the other hand, are made by the people for the people, out of passion. Therefore, I wholehartedly believe GNU/Linux is the superior choice. I use Arch btw ;) and I can safely say, my setup has become more efficient and convenient for me to use than anything else out there.

I'm in the same boat. I was a big FreeBSD and Linux guy back in the day (never used Windows consistently for any stretch of time), but at some point I had a change in career and I could no longer devote the same time and effort to tooling around with technology. I didn't wan to abandon % power altogether, though, so macOS struck the right balance for me. I haven't regretted the move once, because I don't feel like I've lost anything (other than money LOL).

I think the reason this video has some dislikes is because your points are very broad. Like in another comment someone asked about arch linux and you said it doesn't suit your workflow. It would be much better if you talk in more depth on the subjects, like mentioning your actual workflow and the tools you use. Like many other people think, the broad overview of this video could be " I like mac because it's the middle ground". Again am not a hater, just constructive criticism. tldr : please make more technical videos

The issue with closed software is that even if the company is great now, where will that company be in one or two years? you can't trust it for so many reasons. There can be new people in charge that make some stupid deal and implement shady features that you're not aware of. And if you are dependent on that software, then its not like some random project can simply fork it and throw out all the shady stuff.

Also, something you said resonated with me. I use MacOS as my daily driver, and the “connection” you mention is exactly what I feel when I use the OS. So I just moved to ubuntu from Windows. I really have a problem with MacOS, IOS, and appel in general. They are great for sure and I get jealous some times lol... but I really can't use a product from such company. I mean I now have an HP laptop, before I had a Dell. I paid for the hardware... it's mein so I want to be able to install any OS I want !! I want to use any app\Programm I want to. I don't want to by extra storage on the icloud cause my phone don't take SD card "I never used more than 64GB on the phone... but an example"... few weeks ago I recommended a friend that she need to buy an external HDD, encrypt it via Veracrypt for example and then use it to back her stuff up... well I didn't knew before that MacOS do have a different rules.... you need to use the "Time machine" and you can't decide to move only photos or videos or files that you just want to copy, like in any other OS.... no you have to take everything :D... I don't really use such kind of rules that force me to use apple products only "well sure there're alternatives but not for the normal user ! like my dad for example, he will just go with what apple recommend "more icloud storage, or the apple external backup disk". well maybe there's. back to the friend problem, I'm sure there's a solution to copy only photos or videos... but they don't make it that easy to find/use. Apple do make great products for sure. and keep making videos :D

Feel you! > it's mein so I want to be able to install any OS I want !! Again, feel you! I am saddened by how Apple has slowly been making their hardware more and more proprietary. Time Machine is amazing for full system backups... It is one of the only implementations I found that allows users to delete all versions of a given file while having versioning enabled. About your friend, using the VeraCrypt guide, she could select only some paths to backup. > and keep making videos :D Thanks for the push!
